BREAKING NEWS: It's been a great ride, but I'm moving on

Being a broadcaster by trade, I've always kept my eyes open for a great opportunity to get back behind the microphone. I think I've found the chance of a lifetime. I am quite pleased to announce that I have been named the new broadcast voice of the University of New Mexico Lobos for football and men's basketball.

I've greatly enjoyed my time with the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group and will always cherish the contacts and relationships I have been fortunate to make during my tenure.

Thank you all so much for being a positive part of my life, even those who have been critical at times. I'll miss the entire experience. I'll be around at the paper until July 18.

Galetti takes broadcasting job
By Steve Ramirez, Staff Writer
It was an offer Scott Galetti couldn't pass up, so he didn't.
Galetti, high school sports editor of the Pasadena Star-News, has accepted an offer from Learfield Sports to become the radio play-by-play announcer for the University of New Mexico football and men's basketball teams.
He replaces Mike Roberts, whose contract was not renewed, and beat out more than 200 other candidates.
"In the area of broadcasting, the good jobs are few and far between, and I would be a fool not to jump at the opportunity to work for a quality university with an extremely loyal fan base," Galetti said. "As much as I enjoy writing, my first love is broadcasting and I'm just going back to my roots."
Galetti, who grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, got his start in broadcast journalism. He was the lead announcer for Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge. He also has done play-by-play for minor league hockey and women's professional basketball and some NFL games.
"Scott will be an outstanding addition to the Lobos broadcast team," said Tim Cline, senior vice president for Learfield Sports, UNM's exclusive athletics marketing partner through 2015. "His experience alone speaks volumes, and we feel confident he is the right choice moving forward."
"We trust Learfield Sports and know they have conducted a comprehensive search to ensure we have the right person in place to call Lobo games," said Paul Krebs, UNM vice president for athletics.
"We welcome Scott to the UNM family and believe Lobo fans will enjoy him immensely."
Galetti, 47, joined San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group in 2006. He covered prep sports for the Star-News before becoming prep editor prior to this past school year. He previously worked six years for the Santa Clarita Signal.
"During my tenure at the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group, I have developed a true respect for the dedicated coaches and athletes in the San Gabriel Valley," Galetti said. "The San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group has given me opportunities to develop as a writer and experiences that I will be able to utilize as the voice of the Lobos."

Galetti Excited To Be Lobos' Guy

By Mark Smith, Journal Staff Writer
The wait is over.
University of New Mexico fans finally have a new voice for Lobo sports.
On Monday, Scott Galetti was named play-by-play man for Lobo football and men's basketball on KKOB Radio.
Scott Galetti is the new play-by-play man for Lobo football and men's basketball on KKOB Radio.
"It's a university with great tradition in basketball, and football is on the rise," Galetti, a sports writer/broadcaster from Oxnard, Calif., told the Journal on Monday. "One of the things I saw when I went out there for my interview, was a bunch of people, working for the university, who cared.
"I like to be in a town where the university is the major game in town. It's a good-sized university and a great market. And I love the city of Albuquerque."
Galetti says he will move to town by Aug. 1.
Galetti and Russ Langer were the two finalists, each being interviewed nearly two weeks ago in Albuquerque.
"The waiting for any job is the hardest part, especially when you're that close," Galetti said. "Finally, when I got the word, it was a sense of relief. 'A,' because it was over. And 'B,' because I was excited I was the guy."
Galetti called NFL, NCAA football and NCAA baseball games on RSC Sports Radio Network. He has also done play-by-play for Cal State Northridge football. He has basketball experience, being the play-by-play man for the Wichita Falls Texans (CBA), the Seattle Reign (ABL) and Long Beach State.
He also has called hockey for the Phoenix Mustangs (WCHL), Bakersfield Fog (WCHL), and Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) on a fill-in basis.
"Scott will be an outstanding addition to the Lobos' broadcast team," says Tim Cline, senior vice president for Learfield Sports, UNM's exclusive marketing partner. "His experience alone speaks volumes and we feel he is the right choice moving forward."
UNM athletics director Paul Krebs, who said he was part of the decision-making process, said "we trust Learfield Sports and know they have conducted a comprehensive search to ensure we have the right person in place to call Lobo games."
On June 23, Krebs said the new hire would be announced by "the end of the week, if not sooner. We're looking at the two candidates we interviewed and some other things."
When a decision wasn't announced last week, there was much speculation about the "other things." One source told the Journal that both Galetti and Langer were being considered, the former for football and the latter for basketball.
On Monday, Krebs said that was never the case.
"Your source was inaccurate," Krebs said on Monday. "It was never even considered."
Asked if there were any contract talks with Langer about the job, Krebs said, "Scott Galetti was our guy. We were thrilled to have them. We gave serious consideration to both candidates, we're thrilled to have (Galetti).
"He has a lot of levels of experience at a variety of sports. He's a great hire for us."
Langer, who is a UNM graduate and a former announcer for the Albuquerque Dukes, is the radio voice of the Las Vegas 51s PCL baseball team.
"I wish to thank Learfield and the university for the extraordinary degree of professional courtesy they extended me throughout the process," Langer said on Monday.
When asked if he had been offered the job, Langer said "no comment."
Galetti inherits a position held by Mike Roberts for more than four decades. Roberts was bounced after this past season, causing quite a stir.
Galetti says he knows he's stepping into some big shoes.
"I respect the 40-plus years that Mike Roberts spent in the Lobo community," Galetti said. "I hope to someday be as big a part as he was.
"He's a legend in New Mexico, and I'm just going to work as hard as I can to provide a quality broadcast and do the best I can to earn the fans' respect."

New Lobo Voice Won't Keep Us in the Dark
By Rick Wright, Of the Journal
Listening to Scott Galetti, I could almost smell the popcorn.
I just hope the cherry-and-silver Kool-Aid isn't too sweet.
Galetti, UNM's new football and men's basketball radio play-by-play announcer, was formally introduced on Tuesday at a news conference. He made a favorable impression.
But, to this potential listener, he'd already done that.
The Journal's Web site features a 4-minute, 25-second demo clip of Galetti calling a Phoenix Suns-Vancouver Grizzlies game. The game took place at least eight years ago, given that former Lobo Luc Longley is playing for the Suns.
Yet, if the clip isn't fresh, Galetti's delivery is. It's equal parts description and information, smoothly rendered.
What's the most pertinent information in any broadcast The score. During those 4 minutes, 25 seconds, Galetti provided it every time it changed.
That's a habit he got into, he said on Tuesday, listening to and learning from some of the best in the play-by-play field.
"I grew up listening to the late, great Chick Hearn," Galetti said. "I know Vin Scully, having covered professional sports (in southern California) for 15 to 18 years. Bob Miller, the Hall of Fame voice of the Los Angeles Kings, he's a friend of mine.
"All of those people, everybody who critiqued me, (emphasized) that of the do's and don'ts, one of the do's was mention the score and time constantly. You never know when someone's turning on the dial. So, yeah, that's a habit I've worked on for probably 20 years."
Keeping listeners apprised of the score in football is easier to forget, since it doesn't change as often.
"I try to do it every other play at the very least, or when it's pertinent," Galetti said. "I'm always looking at the clock, and I'll always weave it in some way.
"There again, it was something that was taught to me by my mentors. If they're in the Hall of Fame, it's good enough for me."
Galetti's broadcast voice isn't as distinctive as that of Mike Roberts, his predecessor at UNM; few people this side of the late John Facenda, the longtime NFL Films narrator, have better pipes than Roberts. Lobo fans will have to adjust.
Yet, unlike the Roberts of recent years, the volume of Galetti's voice rises and falls with the action. When the crowd gets excited, so does he.
Some broadcasters simply tell you what's happening. Galetti, most recently a sports writer for the Pasadena Star-News, also tells you how and why.
On the demo clip, Shareef Abdur-Rahim doesn't just drive the middle. He drives the middle like "a runaway bus."
"One of the things I was taught a long time ago," Galetti said, "and to use Chick Hearn's analogy, is to try to paint a word picture."
Tuesday, Galetti painted a portrait of himself as a guy who Í like Roberts Í will be dedicated to his listeners.
And Í like Mike Í to UNM.
"You'll know who I'm calling the game for," he said. "There won't be a doubt that I'm for the Lobos."
That's just dandy, Scott, provided your allegiance to the boys in cherry and silver doesn't blind you Í and by extension, your listeners Í to what's really happening.
Here's hoping Galetti never paints the Lobos as playing five against eight on the basketball court or 11 vs. 18 on the football field. Been there, heard that, though it's true many of Roberts' faithful listeners liked being told the officials were jobbing UNM at every turn.
Still, in keeping with Galetti's penchant for providing the score, here's an update.
So far, without having called one at UNM, Galetti's ahead of the game.

As far as abuse,
I guess you were not around last football season...the recent abuse is a french tickler in comparison.

Scott needs thicker skin? His skin must be somewhere between that of a shark and a dinosaur.

I have to say that people are pretty silly, including you Fred. There is one person that gives criticism about how a sport was covered and you call that abuse. Oh and by the way we all work hard to do well in our jobs and most of us face some sort of criticism on a regular basis, rarely receiving praise. Scott should feel proud that he is in a situaution to receive the criticism he has gotten and take away something from the small amount of negative input he has received.

I recommend a little thicker skin.

Fred Sr. (AKA Freddy's dad), thank you so much for the kind words. Yes, you and I have worked together since my first year at The Signal when I wrote something like 27 stories in five days during the SBC Senior Classic. And, since you brought it up in a public forum, I'll never forget that day at Valencia Country Club either (the day I dished out abuse, to the course). You and Toby Zwikel were kind enough to take me out for a round of golf at Valencia Country Club, the first round I had played in 20-25 years. I didn't have shoes, had old clubs and was awful. Using a driver and 5-iron on a course like that doesn't do that course justice. After posting a 135 (picking up many shots), I decided to work on my game and was able to play three to four times a week before moving over to SGVN. Now, I'll have time to golf a lot again. Thanks again Fred.

Scott,
I never realized you were such an abused person.
Obviously, your readers don't know you nearly as well as I do.
Your readers should understand how difficult a job you had in trying to cover so many prep sports in an area like the West San Gabriel Valley where you had no roots to begin with.
It takes time to learn a new area and you learned a lot in the short time you were here. It didn't help that you had to make that long drive, to and from the outskirts of Ventura, every day, work countless hours day and night for what I am certain is a meager salary.
Scott, you have always been a tireless and dedicated worker. You made my life easier when I worked for a sports PR firm in Reseda because you always helped me publicize my clients' events.
I enjoyed the times we played golf together. I will never forget the first time we played at Valencia. You have improved so much, you are now the latest tournament winner on Dave Shelburne's Kiwi Tour, an event played on the Wednesday before every major golf championship.
Scott, I will you well in your new venter as the voice of the Lobos.
The only thing I am curious about, though, is why didn't you like girls' softball? (That's a joke, Scott).

Scott,

It actually makes more sense to me now that I know you are an announcer by trade. An equally important job as reporting, if not more important but less detailed in the reporting elements.

tcchamps said:

I think we should all pull together and do what ever possible to have chkyrslf's daughter attend The University of New Mexico. Maybe Scott can also annouce Softball during a down year too.

chkyrslf should be the one leaving said:

Check your brain, you act as if Scott and the SN haven't covered girls sports. If all there was printed was baseball, than you'd have a point. Softball made the front page a lot more times than boys tennis, swimming or volleyball did. Since softball doesn't start until next spring, why don't you take a chill pill and climb back under your rock. And you're right, if it weren't for you nobody would talk about softball. There are about 10 readers that care about softball, same as the number that attends games. And Parada's record after starting poorly proves the Rio Hondo League was weak and it was a down year like Scott said. Come on, she lost to La Canada.

chkyrslf said:

Goldenarm,

Scott said he was going to be here until July 18th. Why do i have to kiss his butt today? July 17th seems appropriate.

I dare you to go back and find one comment where I put down football. Its not there, I love football.

Most of all, people hate opposing points of view and conflict. I tend to think thats where things worth while happen. I do not curse, I do not put down kids. All I do is tout softball and call attention to detail in coverage. Whats the big deal? By the way, my "sour grapes" were just that, attention to detail.

By the way if I wasn't here, softball blogs would have the readership of cross-country running - none. But now that is the first place where the footballers go to see some good conflict.

Angel Bec,

Your story is wonderful, but you must realize that it is activists that made these sports available and funded for your daughter.

Goldenarm,

I was referring to tennis, because it gets the highest level of coverage in the women's sports world and they tend to wear skirts.

Scott,

I bet you never knew you were so loved until I started commenting.

New York said:

Other than Field Hockey what sport is played by women in skirts? I really don't think Field Hockey gets much attention in the SGV.

There seems to be a notion than "male" sports get most attention. Not all male sports get a lot of coverage. Let's be honest, football gets a lot of attention year-round...from the bloggers. Occassionally Scott threw us a bone in the offseason, but that was in response to our clammering. Why does football draw an outsized following? Supply and Demand. We have ONE game per week and only during the fall. The most a team can play is 14 games, including playoffs! Summer passing league is a laughable substitute for the real thing, but all other sports are year-round in SoCal. If softball and baseball were played as scarcely as football then you would probably see a greater number of paying fans at games and the media would take notice. (For the record I too enjoyed watching bits of the Women's college world series. I too prefer college softball to college baseball, BUT I can change the channel and watch pro baseball instead). Oh yeah, anywhere from 30-70 kids typically make up a varsity football roster. Football deserves more official coverage simply to be fair on a per kid basis.Hell, tennis got lots of coverage even though it is an individual sport. That may be an inefficient allocation of resources but Scott was just trying to be fair.

Goldenarm said:

Chkyrtestosterone,

One thing first: There is nothing wrong with admiring a female athlete in a skirt. Athletics tend to tone the human body to a eye-pleasing,"fit" look. Give it up that the media is swarming with perverts looking for some up skirt photos or exploitation. This comment, along with your eternal grudge of the "down year" statement made by Galetti...has really soured your entire softball commentary, which I admit was sometimes quite astute and worth reading. I am not sure what type of insect has lodged near your spinchter (sp) but it must be a venomous one.
While your knowledge of the game is admirable, your attitude has killed your attempts at good will ambassadorship of the game of softball. This is always how you have presented yourself - as the lone voice of heaven -sent reason among us ignorant punt and grunt footballers. SG wears a 9th degree black belt in patience dealing with you, and responded with professionalism to your comments, which were endlessly garnished with sour grapes.
Even in his parting comments the man harbors no groin shots toward you. Complain if you must, but follow his example and take the high road. The SGV is losing a good dude.

Angel Bec said:

Scott,

Your response to "Check yourself" shows you are a class act.

When I was growing up my mother didn't let me play sports because she said it wasn't for girls.

I made sure that my daughter tried out for every sport possible and she played all sports for at least one season - until she was able to choose the love of her life sport.

Her hard work, devotion, and sacrifices paid off... she is going to college on an athletic scholarship.

I never graduated from college - and she will be the first grandchild in our family to attend... so you can imagine what it means to us.

Thanks again for your hard work - in our society women's sports will never reach the level of men's sports ... but there will always be people like you who are trying their hardest to give it exposure.

chkyrslf said:

Calm down everyone -

1st of all Glouccoach, if Scott's retirement party is on a blog, it is a good thing for him that he is leaving.

2nd of all just because he worked in female sports doesn't mean he respects women's athletics. I don't know maybe he hasn't spent as much quality time working with the "gals?" (not the #1 nickname preferred by female athletes.)

3rd (chky should...blahblahblah) None of these kids that I speak about are my daughters and one of the girls that got the award over Parada had a 10-10 record and finished poorly while Parada went 10-3 in the last 13 games (after the majority of her losses came against higher division OC teams in non-league play) and took her team as far as any team went this year or the year before ("The banner year" that Parada was also a part of) and one of those losses this year was the last game of the year to the ultimate CIF champs. So study before you speak. (I have already stated my case about this but I had to respond to this bone head.)

Scott,

Like I said I don't think you expected me to be sweet to you, but I do wish you the best, and I do not think that you are a bad person. You just happen to fit in with the rest of the media that tends to exclude female sports, unless they are wearing short skirts, in the main stream coverage. I, personally, think that softball has a chance of breaking that mold, considering the fact that they had better overall TV ratings than the Stanley Cup and the Mens College World Series, but, however, nowhere near the amount of highlights on ESPN. So maybe I do have an axe to grind but it has nothing to do with specific kids or personal allegiances.

This sort of discussion is what blogs are really for, not kissing the butt of the person that runs the blog. If I didn't change your mind, or properly criticize you I hope that I made you think. I also think that you would agree with me when I say that there is nothing wrong with differing opinions, even if they are strong opinions.

Good Luck in your endeavors, and I mean it.

Getoveryourself, or whatever you call yourself. Way to once again bring down the softball community, that is if you really are a fan. You come on and try to rain on Scott's parade simply because your daughter didn't make the all area team. How many teams made it to the finals this year? Oh, wait, none. Yet, it wasn't a down year. The girl you've said is so great, Nicole Parada was 12-9. If that's a great season, than you have no clue about what a good year in softball is. Good luck Scott.

Chkyrslf: I wasn't going to respond to your nonsense, but since you seem to know where my heart is, I just had to. First off, we, as a paper, covered girls volleyball, basketball, water polo and softball as well, if not better than in years past, and I take great pride in that. Your comment about my lack of respect for women's sports is quite funny. I was the voice of Long Beach State's women's basketball team for three seasons, and , up until now, the biggest job I had working for a team as when I worked for the Seattle Reign of the defunct ABL women's basketball league for two years. Those were two experiences I hold in high regard. I've covered girls athletics on the high school level for the past eight years and have enjoyed it. In fact, while at my old paper, I covered a gal who played girls basketball for UNM, Brandi Kimble. Thanks for your support chkyrslf. I'll miss our barbs back and forth.

Scott,

I would like to say that I am going to miss you,but I won't.I thought you took a step backwards for women's athletics in the SGV. Your initial statement of it being a down year in softball before the season even started, came across as insulting and as an excuse not to cover the popular sport properly. And though you were forced by me as well as a few others to give it some attention you proved your lack of respect for women's sports through the end. I am glad to see that you will only be covering men's sports, because that seems to be where your heart is.

I hope that next year the people who run the paper take a positive step and hire a woman to cover women's athletics. To have somebody that actually understands the game of softball cover that sport would be dreamy. However, one would guess that Keith Lair is up for a promotion.

Good Luck in New Mexico,

Chky

I tried to keep a decent attitude and the only time I really spoke my mind was about coverage issues because I was defending our statff. Personal attacks I just rolled with. As far as the UNM people, it's a close-knit group and I can't wait to be a part of it. They have a beautiful football stadium and the famous Pit, the same building where North Carolina State shocked the world to win the national championship. It's one of the best college arenas in the country and I'm pumped knowing I'll be calling it home. The Mountain West Conference is a solid conference and the football schedule is quite impressive this season. It's fun knowing I'll see some area players, such as Patrick Greene, who will be a long-snapper at Utah. Our team has Cody Neely, a linebacker from Bishop Amat. Another guy UNM signed was B.R. Holbrook, a good-sized quarterback I had a chance to see at Hart HS. Being an unbiassed member of the media for so long, I need to get used to using a catchy phrase, GO LOBOS.

You took more shots to the head than Tex Cobb did against Larry Holmes and somehow kept up a decent "tude". Guess that means your DNA includes the standard journalism thick skin.

I met some NM folk and coaches at a couple lineman clinics...they know fball and love the game, sounds like a great move in that regard.. Who knows, maybe higher rungs of the Learfield Sports ladder are in your future.

It is always easier to go to work when you truly enjoy what you do. Making a reasonable $ is a good thing as well. Best of luck to you.

SG -

Thanks for all your efforts and success in prep sports. You've done a good job and really appreciate everything you've done for the kids.

Good luck in NM and God speed.

Congrats Scott and good luck.

If the PSN wants someone who is going to work hard and knows local Prep Sports better than anyone else, they'll make a play for Joe Torosian over at the Mid Valley News.
