FOOTBALL: What makes a good coach good?
With summer workouts about to begin, I thought I'd pose the question of what are the charactaristics of a good coach?
Is it conducting tough workouts? Being hard on players and pushing them to the limit? Is it the abilitiy of a good pep talk?

Above: Arcadia coach Jon Dimalante, center.
Question: Who are the top area coaches, and why?

Must be a good teacher of life, education, the respect for mankind, know how to improvise during the game, during practices, and how utilize the talent in the proper positions.

Coach Jon Dimalante is a man of leadership and integrity. He is respected by his players, his coaches, and Apache football parents. He is a positive motivator who brings out the best in his players. They know they can count on his support, on and off the field.
Our three sons have had the privilege to play for Coach "D", and they are proud to call him "Coach."
A good coach is has the ability to earn the respect of his players by displaying good character and discipline. To push a player hard is good but it must be done in a way that the player still respects the coach. Some coaches make the mistake of putting players down and that is never good. Always build them up and compliment and let them know what you expect from them and where they stand. Don't leave them in the dark. Help them achieve goals and reward them with compliments.
Some coaches have yet to mature and are still learning how to coach so they make mistakes. If they can learn from the mistakes and correct them, then they can become great coaches.
Again the most important thing is that coaches need to earn the respect of their players and when that happens, their players will do whatever they are asked.
You need a leader who can glue it all together. In team sports, unity can make champions of the mediocre.
A stew mix of fundamentals, preparation for opponent and strategy is essential. And lastly, you gotta believe.

I always found that some coaches just have that "it" factor and some don't. Regarding Arcadia, Dimalante normally makes the best out of his talent and uses it correctly. A good head coach also surrounds himself with good assistant coaches as well. Motivation is always a must-have trait.
Dimalante has that "it" factor.
