A QUESTION: What topics would you like posted?
Summer's here and, although school's going to be out, if not already, for all the area schools, there is still plenty to talk about.

Qustion: Besides football, what other topics would you like to chat about?
Beginning in the next week or so, I'll be going out to summer football camps, passing leagues and tournaments and doing writeups and some videos as well, so football will be well distributed. Any other ideas?

SB
the story is just a cut and paste from Roger Murray's blog. Thanks for the info.
I am a devout anti-tiebreaker, especially the 50 yd 8 play deal you mention - from personal experience...it is no way to end a season.
Goldenarm,
Thanks for the play by play...good job.
However, the "California Tie Breaker" no longer exists. That is where the ball was placed on the 50 yard line and each team ran four plays and which ever side of the field the ball ended up after the eight plays is declared the winner.
Back in the 1970's, NFHS came up with the 10 yard tie breaker which is still in use, except here in the Southern Section of the CIF, they start at the 25 yard line.
NCAA adopted the 25 yard tie breaker in the 1990s based on the NFHS tie breaker which may have originated in Florida.
In the NCAA, they must "go for two" from the third overtime and there is no such restriction in HS.
Well if you are going to have more fun, "areafan," then for gods sake I am all for it!
Topic for discussion:
PITCHING LIMITS IN HS SOFTBALL? GOOD OR BAD?
Pitching limits (like the boys) makes all the sense in the world. It would bring the closest thing to parity among more teams than any other rule change.Coaches would have to coach as well as develop a second pitcher. Teams would have to play D and the girls would have to score runs. Sounds like more fun to me?
San Marino and Alhambra will be in the Falcon passing classic hosted by Crescenta Valley HS this Saturday at Glendale Sports Complex
Red Group: Crescenta Valley, Hemet, Cantwell, San Marino, Van Nuys
White Group: Chaminade, LA Marshall, Burbank, Highland, Alhambra
Blue Group: Duarte, Burroughs (Burbank), Hollywood, San Fernando, West Ranch
Regarding the upcoming All-Star game, here is an interesting write up from Murray's coverage of the 605 war. 8 missed field goals in the infamous Cal. tie breaker format, plus 1 missed at end of regulation
East's answer to 15-15 tie left standing on the sideline ...
By Roger Murray on June 8, 2008 6:26 PM | Permalink | Comments (0) |
For the most part, Saturday evening's 41st Annual 605 All Star Football Classic that ended in a 15-15 tie was an enjoyable experience, with several area players, most notibly La Habra QB Casey Morales, Santa Fe DB Keith Gaines, St. Paul DL Ryan Rosenthal and La Serna P/K Morris Keseloff contributing impressively among the 25 locals who participated.
That's the good news.
The bad news is the disappointing tie, a frustration magnified by the way it happened.
They played four overtimes, using the California tie breaker in
which each team begins its series of downs on the 25-yard line. What
followed put a damper on the game for many of the onlookers.
East place kicker Jonathan Heinze and West place kicker Brian Covey each
missed four field goal attempts, one at the end of each OT period.
Heinze, who had kicked three field goals earlier, also had missed a last-ditch, 51 yard attempt on the final play of regulation time.
It is ironic that even though it was obvious Heinze was
feeling the pressure (prehaps enhanced because the defense was not
allowed to rush on FG attempts), East head coach Raul Lara and special teams coach Carlos Lara apparently chose to ignore one of the
southland's best kickers, La Habra's Petey Puga, who waited on the
sideline. Puga admitted later he was frustrated after telling members of the East
coaching staff he could kick but they had no response.
"A lot of the other players were telling me I should tell them," Puga said. "Oh, yeah, I told them I could kick numerous times. I don't know what was going on in their heads, but (Heinze) is their kicker during the season. I know it was an all-star game and all that, but we also wanted to win." Puga said he that while he practiced puntiing as a backup to Keseloff during workouts, he hadn't kicked field goals.
During the regular season, Puga made five of six attempts, the longest from 45 yards, for the Southeast Division champion Highlanders. His only miss ("from about 35 yards") was against Buena Park right after the disastrious southland fires and he hadn't practiced kicking for two weeks.
Heinze was seven for 11, with a long of 47 yards during the season.
SG,
Any word on dates scheduled for passing league matchups close to home?
The coaches are from the East Valley, so it's almost more of a Tribune game. I really don't much about how the teams are picked.
Scott,
Why is the football all star game so late in the year? Most kids are out of football shape, some are commited to schools that don't want them to play, some are on vacation.. it just seems really late. Also who picks the teams? How many from each school? And does your school have to have a winning season?
Hey Scott, So I guess no one around the SGV got drafted in the MLB Draft? Or was it not posted?
Manny, until rosters are made public do you know the answer to those questions?
How about a break down by sport of who is going to what high schools next year.....what kids are going to St. Francis, Maranantha, La Salle, Poly, Mayfield, Sacred Heart, Westridge and how will it effect their fortunes on the field in each sport....
A nice spring leg-o-lamb served at Hichcock Field sounds good.
As far as TC food, if the Rams are ahead by 10 late in the 4th quarter, the nachos taste like filet mignon.
The food is fresh and OK, but I don't see the snack bar going 5 star anytime soon. The tri-tip at La Puente last year was killer.
DAWWGER...you must have had the Salmonella Sandwich we reserve for ex-Monrovia coaches...sorry man I had to go there
Scott,
When are you going to post the Star News 'all-area' teams for spring sports?
DAWWGER, what food does TC have that is so good?
The challenge would probably be similar to what teachers of other subjects deal with.
TC has the best food within the SGV.
I have a ton of drills:
4x4's
Back-Rides,
Backward Bearcrawls,
2X2's
Wheel Gigs,
Push-ups from HELL,
Circle-Up drill
Here are few...I have about 100 drills noted away in my clip board.
Ask any of my former players and they will tell you how fun my drills were...the Marine Corp boot-camp had nothing on my drills.
Oh by the way Scott, how about some more football topics?
Coach DAWWGER
New York,
Most schools have a hard time with the budgets to provide for regular programs. Imagine the budget if they made it mandatory.
It is hard enough on hs coaches to deal with teens who want to be there, just think of three hundred other kids who do not want to be there.
Kinda seems like you're dreaming.
Should competitive athletics be a required part of a school's curriculum?
In the face of a national obesity crisis as well as a generation of new entrants to the work force lacking competitive spirit and work ethic, I think having a few years of team competition and camaraderie would be healthy. Mind, Body, Soul.
Scott can you find out if the rumor that the monrovia girls basketball coach resigned is true?

Scott,
What happened to my post?
I do not consider this a "football topic" but how about which school/stadium has the best food? If the game sucks, at least the food can make being there enjoyable!
Since there is so much talk about travel ball, maybe it would be a good idea for people to give updates of area kids in the travel ball world over the summer. Maybe track some players to the 18 Gold qualifiers and the 18 Gold Championship in OK City which will be telecasted on FSN in the first week of August.
Some kids that will be trying to qaulify will include several upper and lower classmen as well as players that were '07 graduates. Who knows, maybe you can take the time to watch some local players at one of the Southern California showcases or qualifiers. You can see all of the college coaches and get a sense of what it has become and see how important it is to Southern California softball.

How about the top 3 worst things you have seen a coach do, and the top 3 best things you have seen a coach do?
Good deeds, bad deeds, a particular aspect of his/her coaching that should or should not be more widespread in the coaching ranks?
Great drills, torturous drills, useless drills, etc.
One of mine I cannot forget is inside the small gym at AHS with the thermostat set on boiling hot, doing up/downs then getting lambasted by the coach for 10 minutes while forced to stay arched in a neck bridge position.
