FOOTBALL: Your home for passing leagues

| | Comments (75) |

Since we've hit the summer football season, which teams have been doing well during passing leagues?

I know Muir reached the semifinals it lost to Canyon at the Saugus Under the Lights tournament a couple of weeks ago.

Besides Mitchell Crockom from Alhambra, who are the other players that will emerge as standouts?

Wonderful to read!

So a lot has been made about Maranatha cleaning up in passing league. If you are interested in why this happened, maybe you should check out the Rivals rating of their QB Matt Schilz who is the #37 QB in the Nation. Scouts who attend Spring and Summer camps asess the players and give them rankings. Obviously this will be a season to watch for Maranatha. He has already accepted a scholarship to Kansas State I'm sure you will all be hearing his name soon, as he is easily among the highest rated prospects in the SGV. A video of his highlights is available via the link as well.

Respect to maranatha.
they beat st. francis at thier own passing tourney.
i know the game changes with pads but beating them in passing league shows alot of about sf being VERY overrated and maranatha being VERY underrated. Maranatha also went to san dimas and swept the ENTIRE passing tourney out there. I think this season will show just how strong maranatha is.

Maranatha plays the passing league with no line backers and has double coverage for all the receivers. they do not play a realistic defense in the passing league. in a real game they would get killed.

MHS fans, you embarass the rest of us, we have never even really won league, we tied with 3 other teams ONCE in the past 5 years. Let's actually win a few games and then try and be gracious in victory.

It was PASSING league, if you ever want to be real just remember what happens when we play St. Margarets!

Stang Fan,

nice to see the Stangs ruffled some feathers over in the ESGV...apparently the San Bern tourney opened some eyeballs over there. In the end though, not enough to touch even the edge of respect as far as comments being made.
Here is to a healthy September for all teams.

Long time no blog...

Anyhow, quite a lot has transpired since my last post, nontheless, passing league is winding down and my man Scotty G. is head to the land of the Lobos (congrats Scott).

I didn't really feel like throwing my two cents in during the passing league months because the subject of its worth and importance has been beaten into the ground. Everyone knows that it isn't a true indicator for success during the regular season, but everyone wants their team to do well. It is what it is...

As far as my Stangs go, I heard they had a fairly decent summer, especially in tournament play. They reached the semi's in the Saugus tourney where they lost a squeaker to Canyon. They then won the San Bernardino tourney that featured some pretty strong teams. Finally, they reached the finals of the Claremont tourney where they lost out to Palmdale in a close one. Apparently, the Stangs didn't "get up" for some of their one-on-ones where they lost to both SF and Glendale @ SF, played tight with La Salle @ LS and did OK vs. Orange Lutheran @ OLu (I guess nobody wants to venture to NW Pasadena these days).

So what does all of this mean? Nothing. Let's put the damn pads on and get this started already.

BTW, I hope the SF fans didn't put too much into their win vs. Muir, and some of you certainly did. We lost to GLENDALE that same day so that tells me a little something...well that and Maranatha would have to start the season off in the number 1 spot, and we know that's definitely not happening.

Corona Centennial
Corona Santiago
Oaks Christian
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame
Serrano - Phelan
Pasadena
29 Palms - Montreal Harris did not play
San Bernardino
Eisenhower
Rancho Cucamonga
Big Bear
San Gorgonio

Monrovia's 'Cats and your "Dogs had a spirited match there at the Santa Fe tourney on Saturday. You guys beat us in a close one...a very fun game, down to the wire, good for the kids. Burbank has one of the more accurate passers I saw all day at that tourney.
The winner of Monrovia's pool, Lakewood, won the whole thing. Yeah, they beat us, too...the 'Cats' only two losses on the day.
Fun stuff.

Arcadia will have a pretty decent starting lineup this year but its problem will be depth, which unfortunately has been the case the last few years like with many other teams in the West SGV.

I wasn't there but I have heard that Arcadia looked very good at West Covina yesterday. Arcadia and Monrovia are playing in he Santa Fe passing tournament tomorrow, which has 35 teams in it. Other teams include defending champion Carson, CIF-SS Northeast Division champion St. Margaret's, Central Division champion Colony, Mid-Valley semifinalist Paraclete, Lakewood, Lynwood, Harbor Narbonne,
Glendora, Cypress and Bellflower. La Serna, Whittier Christian and Serra were on the waiting list a while ago.

I don't ever recall ever winning or losing a passing league game when I was a player. It's hard to keep a realistic score, because each team usually gets a set of 20 or so plays on offense and then they switch. Even if the offense throws an interception they still continue to have the ball until there set is up. Plus the line of scrimmage doesn't move. Each play starts back at the 40 every time.

Some benefits of passing league in my opinion:
1. You get to work on timing with QB and Receivers...which is a little off anyways because putting on pads changes how fast a receiver can run and how hard, and how far a QB can throw the ball.
2.QB's get a chance to read coverages. Knowledge of knowing my flats are open and seeing cushions in a Cover 3 defense are the basics or being a High School QB. It's putting the knowledge into practice and actually seeing it and having a chance at repetition on an offensive set. Knowing that you can make mistakes in passing league is a good learning tool as well. I'd rather my QB try to jam a pass into a guy being covered by 3 guys in the summer then in the fall and learn from that mistake.
3. Huge help for defensive players to get looks of different offensive formations and adjust to them while working on their defensive schemes. All summer long and in camp you see the same offensive sets all the time because you only scrimmage against your own offense. But as a backer and safety you need to adjust when playing in a passing league game. Great teaching moments during these scrimmages, like how to adjust to a a 3 and 1/2(trips set with a RB in the backfield) or how to line up when there is no RB in the backfield (which would be important to know at the end of a game when a team is running a 2 minute offense).
3. Team camaraderie. I have good memories of hanging out with my teammates riding to the games and back, and just hanging out and having fun. You need to take it seriously but there was always room to joke around a little bit and have some fun.

Alright this post has become way to long, my apologies.

Goldenarm said:

If anyone goes to West Co today, please share your observations....who threw the ball well, who played tight D, who got ripped, etc

I agree with most here, this is practice, a chance to see your kids against unfamiliar faces...all part of preparation for the real tomato, which happens in Sept. I don't think you will hear anybody say, "yeah man, you beat us on Friday night, but we kicked your butt in the passing tourney.

TA said:

Wow these passing league guru's are hilarious! "It wasn't a passing tourney just a regular game" GET OVER IT! it was a glorified practice...i am not a SF fan but would have to agree that maranantha would not fair well against the knights...and high profile schools attend these "tournaments" to simply work out the kinks of the defense/offense against someone other than their own 1st or 2nd stringers

Anonymous said:

just to tell you SF was not beat in their annual passing tourney it was a regular passing game

fbfan1 said:

take it easy maranantha fans. You still dont belong on any field with ST. Francis. They took you guys lightly and lost. Even Muir does well in passing tournaments. Wait, this wasnt even a tournament

it is what it is said:

If passing scrimmages do not mean anything then why do high profile schools attend them? I guess the Bonita tournament where 20 plus teams enter each season is just for show.
Let’s put the summer session in proper prospective, conditioning, lifting weights, installing new systems and using passing scrimmages to work out the kinks. Regardless of “records” at any tournament every team wants to step on the field and be competitive. Wouldn’t that be a normal reaction to competition?
It’s not rocket science to know that the measure of a team will be decided when the pads come on but there has to be a start somewhere right? Otherwise why have a summer session, just arrive in August and go to work……..

goteamgo said:

I agree with TA - passing leagues are just a glorified practice to help teams work out some kinks in the summer months. When my son returns from a passing league "game" we does not say "we won" or "we lost" but rather "we played well" or "we had problems in (name area)."

I am glad in some ways the Maranatha swagger has returned, as it certainly has spiced up the blog.

Also, I know La Salle is one of the teams at West Covina today.

Thanks, I did not know about the 4 team's at one location deal. My preference is the bring the lineman format and let's all party...ie, competitions among the beef as well.
TC Fan -
I follow the teams (all levels)and have done so for a couple years...but I am not an insider or in possession of Backus's lost playbook... more of an observer who enjoys prep fball.

TA said:

For all of those people out there who get all excited about Passing Tourney's need to RELAX!!! all they are are just glorified practices...any kid can look good running around with shorts and a shirt on, but once the pads get put on then you'll see who is legit and who'll wet the bed when coming across the middle.

TC Fan said:

Goldenarm, how do you have such a great knowledge about TC football? Do you have a son who plays there, or any connections with the coaches? Thanks for all the info anyways Goldenarm.

Goldenarm: The way it usually works is there are four teams at during the week passing leagues. The teams rotate and will play each other in what amounts to three 40 to 45-minute games. So there will be two games going on at the same time usually on 40-yard fields. Although some schools use the whole field. It's all about running offensive sets. And as was pointed out by an anon poster, passing leagues do allow us to see the development of skill players. I noticed the change in La Salle's last year as the summer progressed and look how the Lancers ended up offensively. Maranatha could be quite good this year with their injured quarterback returning.

Passing League Thought:

A team can beat every team silly-willy and outscore anybody without the shells and helmets. A team can go 20-0 in passing games and go 2-8 in regular season football. Come on dudes, I have seen players kick-butt during the Summer, and when the pads came on...the truth be told.

Cant wait to the regular football season. I mean REAL football!

had to be there to witness it said:

The only lame ones out there yesterday where the "cry baby" coaches of the 3 teams that got "worked" over by little old MHS. I would hope that D-3 schools would dominate D-11 schools during the regular season but yesrterday was not it. Maybe the ass wiping those three teams received yesterday will humble them a bit and help them realize that anything is possible during a passing scrimmage. Did anyone catch that ridiculous "draw play" ran yesterday, what a joke!!!!

Goldenarm said:

JJIMENEZ,

I watched some of the practice, there was no dickin around....you didn't say much about size. A couple kids looked at or above 300 lbs. And yeah, there was more than just big kids.

TC is playing catch at West Covina today, I heard it was a multiple schools thing - but no clue if that is true.

JJIMENEZ said:

THE 'MEAD DOESN'T REBUILD, THEY JUST RELOAD...

Nah but seriously they lost a few linemen on both sides due to graduation, but had kids on the sidelines waiting to step up and in. So far things are looking good at the 'Mead and not just with the big boys up front. (EXPECTATIONS ARE HIGH)

As for the field...Yeah its nice to see them putting in new sod, I'm just hoping the maintenance crew doesn't forget to do what its paid to do. MAINTAIN AND WATER IT THIS TIME!!!!

but as always...

!!!FEAR THE 'MEAD!!!WAR PANTHERS!!!

u guys are lame wen u guys get excited over passing tournaments lets see SF play maranatha in actual PADS and lets see who talks smack now!

anonymous said:

no, the 7 v 7 game between st. francis and maranatha doesn't say everything about the two teams. obviously, it changes things with linemen, running plays, and pads on. but maranatha beating SF says a lot about their skill position players. no matter how bad or good SF is, props to the MHS defense, QB and receivers. they must be very talented this year.

Anon said:

Its insane how some people put weight into 7 on 7's with no line or special teams or more importantly PADS! But yet someone has the guts to write SCOREBOARD! I'm sure the St. Francis coaches are reviewing the tape to see how such a monumental upset occured! St. Francis also holds 1 v 1 & 2 v 2 line competitions any word what happened there?

fb4life said:

This is adressed to whoever said that Maranatha is not even a team worth watching and who said that St. Francis is looking good...just to let you know, whoever you are, Maranatha beat St. Francis in their annual passing tournament and actually swept the whole thing. Honestly, from watching the game, SF is not too strong this year. While Dietrich Riley was impressive, he had no one that could throw to him. The biggest thing that MHS did in that game was expose the fact that SF is very weak in the QB position. And this is a Maranatha defense that only has a ton of young talent, having only 1 senior on D. Also i do find it hard to believe that some previous bloggers have said that SF is looking sharp because i dont think that "sharp" is losing to a Divison 10 team. Maranatha proved a lot in that game. Just throwing that out there. Good job MHS.

were are the Muir fans talking about last weeks loss to St. Francis. Its too bad these teams don't play each other. I would definately pay to see S.F destroy Muir again.

Goldenarm said:

I drove by Rosemead HS yesterday, their squad looks large in number and includes some Sasquatch size lineman. Maybe JJIMENEZ can elaborate - if these kids are returnees or new kids.

Also their main playing field (which looked like yellow concrete and dwarf cactus) was being scalped by heavy equipment and a carpet of new grass and sod was being layed down yesterday. Great deal for the Mead players and fans alike.

Alhambra looks like they have a chance at making a lot of noise this season. Crockom is a beast both on offense and defense, and the quarterback looked sharp at the Crescenta Valley tournament. San Gabriel should be very strong as well.

Goldenarm said:

Word is Muir won the San Bern passing tourney...which apparently included some strong teams. Maybe The Stang Fan can provide details.

On Robledo's site some of the ESGV teams took notice of Muir's athleticism. Hopefully the Stangs will continue this success the first 3 weeks of Sept -
