Food in the Rio!

Temple City: food wasnt bad, just your average burgers and dogs They do have great chili but its hard to see if it was homemade or from a can

San Marino: They change on and off every game. If you want great food, stop by the South Pasadena/San Marino game if you can find parking but the food is quite amazing as well as the game...though both schools are never real contenders

South Pasadena: They just got a new field which looks really nice but i have to say the food is not up to par. They have cup noodles, chips and your usual grill but nothing really stands out. i did enjoy the homemade chili on rice though

La Canada: Same ole grill, they had churros once which were pretty good.

Monrovia: Ummmm...In n out is just a two block walk from the school..

Blair: Best football team in the RHL after years of failure....no stadium, no food

I guess the natural order of topics suggest the next one be "Worst Bathroom Facilities" at local football venues. In most cases, waiting till halftime to take a whizz could mean serious bladder torture standing in a long, slow moving line ...a scenario often worse for the female patrons. On 2nd thought, bad topic idea.

Prepfan: I completely forgot about Kare Field. Definitely good burgers and fries.

Kare Field, home of the RHP Kares has some great burgers and fries. Very affordable too

st. francis has delicious food no doubt. john burroughs high school in burbank also has these delicious baked potatoes with chili and all these toppings like bacon and stuff. its reallly good

Not much for the Valley that I've seen. Although Bosco Tech's Carne Asada Taco's are amazingly good (although they don't play in the valley). The best I've ever had are the Tri-Tips at SO Notre Dame and they used to do Swordfish at Mary Star.

I guess this thread will give me a chance to hopefully jumpstart a writing career as a food critic. It is based on my two years of following La Salle football, and I am sure there are places I have not yet been that also have great food. I hope people will add their comments and opinions.

PLACES TO GO FOR THE FOOD AND FORGET THE GAME

Mary Star of the Sea HS (@ Daniel’s Field in San Pedro) (5 stars)

Daniel’s Field is about a large as a postage stamp. The cheerleaders have to be careful not to run into the players on the sideline. There is basically only street parking, and people put lawn chairs on the balconies of the adjoining apartment buildings to watch the games.

The food? THE BEST. I understand that Camino Real league coaches fight for the privilege of filming Mary Star games just to go to San Pedro for the food. Swordfish sandwiches with homemade tartar sauce. Italian sausage and bell pepper sandwiches. I understand that the swordfish are so fresh that they were swimming about 12 hours before game time. People ask when the snack bar closes, so they can buy extra to take home. It is that good. As mentioned, Daniel’s Field is tiny, so be warned – the snack bar is basically in the end zone behind a goal post – a yell goes up to cover the food when a field goal or extra point is kicked.

Verbum Dei HS (@ Centennial HS) (4 stars)

The friendliest snack bar people you will ever meet. We ordered 10 hot chocolates, and they delivered to the visitor’s side of the field. Great specialties – the hot-link sausages, and chicken wings with vegetables, and ranch dressing for dipping. Went back for seconds.

St. Monica HS (@ St. Bernard HS) (4 stars, for the burger!)

The high rating is for one of the best burgers I have ever had – a double cheeseburger, with two hot-link sausages on top. My gut was busting, but it was SO good. Also, good tacos. Bad football team (no longer in the Camino Real league) but what a burger.

PLACES TO ENJOY BOTH THE FOOD AND THE GAME

Temple City HS (3 ½ stars)

Good, solid, stadium food that one would expect at a high school game. Hot dogs, hamburgers, but most important it was here that I introduced my son to the delicacy known as the pepper belly (Fritos covered with chili and cheese – eat with a spoon). Good chili even!!! (not some cheap chili with lots of beans). What impressed me the most with TC was good food, in large quantities, at a reasonable price. I did not walk away unhappy or disappointed (except paying to park at a high school game)

La Salle HS (3 ½ stars)

The specialty is the BBQ tri-tip sandwich, which is definitely worth having – I prefer with grilled onions, but you can get it without. They also have a gourmet coffee cart. They do a good job, considering that the snack bar area is wedged in a corner of Lancer Field, but they provide tables to stand at and talk – a great place to eat between the JV and varsity games. My only complaint is that the food seems to be a bit pricier than other schools.

San Marino HS (3 ½ stars)

The snack bar was well supervised, and from what I remember, they had a great selection of food with unique condiments – I selected the home made mango salsa to go with my tacos. I was pleased with the food, the quality, and the selection – I had a hard time making up my mind as to what to eat. My only complaint – it is a LONG way from the snack bar to the visitors side of the field, and my food was cold by the time I arrived back to my seat.

Monrovia HS (3 stars)

Once again, good, solid, stadium food that one would expect at a high school game – mainly hot dogs and hamburgers. Nothing memorable, but nothing unmemorable either.

Cantwell HS (2 ½ stars)

Cantwell definitely has the best tacos of any high school stadium I have been to. After that, not to many memories – stick with the tacos. Plus I hate paying for parking at a high school game.

THE GAME BETTER BE GOOD, BECAUSE THE FOOD SUCKS

Eagle Rock HS (1/2 star)

A hand lettered menu on a piece of cardboard should have tipped me off. The advertised “Gatorade” but it was really a Costco plain wrap sport drink, that they charged Gatorade prices for – I guess truth in advertising laws do not apply to high school concession stands. It was a hot day, and I think the hamburgers were moist and not dry because of the chef sweating over the grill – some of the sweat must have moistened the meat.

Highland Park HS (0 star)

You know you are in trouble when the best thing on the menu is Cup of Noodles. Some people were waiting for Little Caesars pizza to be delivered to the snack bar, which was then sold for $2/slice. I noticed the exodus of people leaving between the JV and varsity game to a restaurant across the street. It is moments like this that I know why I carry granola bars to games.
