The wait is over .... Meet Miguel

The Pasadena Star-News is pleased to announce the hiring of Star-News prep editor Miguel Melendez, who is a former part-timer at the Tribune, and most recently was a big part of the Orange County Register's prep coverage. Miguel loves to blog, is tech savvy, likes UCLA, (which was important during the hiring process, ha, ha), but in all seriousness, will rock the Star-News coverage area. He's passionate, which makes me excited to work with him again, and I know you will enjoy his coverage. He knows the area well and is a regular follower of our blogs. He will start on Monday, so welcome him and tell him what he should expect. By the way, read Miguel's Mother Day piece from the O.C. Register. How can you not root for this guy.
For more personal info on Miguel, here is his bio from the OC Register ...
Miguel Melendez was born in Mexico but grew up all around Los Angeles before settling in Alhambra where he attended Alhambra High.
When he wasn't trying out for the football team or working odd jobs as a telemarketer and personal assistant in the summer, Miguel was practicing his music sheets and marching up and down the street playing the trombone with the Alhambra High marching band. He later went on to practice with the USC marching band before giving up music aspirations to become a journalist.
Miguel became a correspondent for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and Pasadena Star-News, and after three years built a portfolio that helped him land a job as a freelance writer for the Los Angeles Times before accepting an offer at The Register covering high schools. He covered Major League Soccer for three years before being promoted to report on the Angels, Dodgers and Lakers for the Web. Miguel also has done work for the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Oakland Tribune, Fresno Bee and The Boston Globe.

Hey there, when viewing at your blog i see some sort of weird codes all over the page, in case it's important I just thought I'd let you know it says this with all sorts of other stuff after it: "Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent in wp-settings.php line 12"
Hey, Your Blog is excellent, found while in search for accessories online info on ask.com and it has very related information on it. Will be sure to come back again and bookmark, thanks
Miguel, welcome aboard
HERE IS GOOD STORY TO COVER!!!
PHS BULLDOG OFFENSE GUARD BOYKINS WILL FACE HIS COUSIN, ARROYO VALLEY OF SAN BERARDINO DL ALEX BOYKINS IN THE FIRST FOOTBALL OF THE 2008 SEASON!!!
GOOD PART ABOUT THIS MATCH-UP THEY WILL BE GOING HEAD TO HEAD AGAINST EACH OTHER!!!
First I would like to welcome Mr. Melendez back to the Star-News. As you can tell by my alias my allegiance is to track and field. Will track and field coverage be more balanced in the spring? It Didn’t seem as though the coverage was as knowledgeable as prior years.
:o)
Welcome to the party, Miguel.
one ugly dude!
Hey Miguel,
Welcome back. It's great to have you on our team again.
For those of you unfamiliar with Miguel, he did a sensational job with the Orange County Register over the last few years, especially with his soccer coverage.
Since Pasadena is such a soccer hotbed, it will be great to have a futbol-minded reporter back in the area.
It's just too bad he's moving over to Pasadena and not the Whittier Daily News.
You're going to miss some great football this fall (St. Paul, La Habra, Schurr and Cal-Hi to name a few).
Welcome back.
hsfbfan,
Doesn't surprise me. They had some serious speed last year and will continue to do so with athletes pouring out of that high school. If they had any coaching they would be a force to be reckoned with.
Miguel,
It's Monday...you are officially on the clock! Lol!!! Anyhow, just interested to see what you will start off with this week. By the way, I'm assuming, like Fred and the Trib, you too are having issues with the money-making efforts of the paper and are therefore somewhat in danger of having an abbreviated Prep Football Preview. Is that the case?
Good luck with your new endeavor!!! Oh....and I can't WAIT to criticize........my bad, I mean READ your Top Ten.
LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!
Hi Miquel,
Welcome, I'm just a sports mom. I have a question and I promise not to be a nag or too long-winded. I just want to know if it is somehow costly to the PSN to start a blog each month for each sport in the current season. It seems simple to me that if you have a fall blog for each sport...football, volleyball, tennis...whatever, you'd cover all of your bases and those who are interested in those sports would happily blog. Not a lot of work for PSN staffers but it would mean the world to those interested in those sports.
I don't really enjoy the blogs that ask "please post what you'd like to blog about". For instance, this summer, I would have loved to have had a blog that allowed me to blog about my kids passing league schedule and my other kids volleyball summer league schedule...feel me?
Please...if PSN isn't gonna use a blogging system that allows consumers to add their own topic, please just start a blog each month that is sports specific for that season. Thanks. : )
miketev
from your answer it seems junior year GPA does carry greater significance. I was not sure. It is great to see kids concerned and willing to sacrifice to get the grades capable of moving them forward, but damn, I agree- the memories and value of the football experience rank high with me as well. This topic shoots off in many directions...I just know some of these guys would have broken into the lineup come September.
Some have mentioned returning for their senior season, but missing a year can have resounding effects as well.
Miguel:
Well, let’s get this started. You should pencil in Sept 12th on your calendar to be at Maranatha for what should be a great small school game when La Salle comes to play the Minutemen. Many of these kids have gone through local youth programs together and whenever these two schools meet in any sport the rivalry is on. I know these two schools haven’t played each other over the last few years and I’m not sure it they’ve ever played football against each other. These are the only two local schools to make the CIF finals over the last couple of years. We’ve got the In-N-Out truck scheduled to do the concession so what’s a better way to spend a Friday night then with a Double-Double and a high school football game.
Since your coming from the OC Register I’d like to know your take on the St Margaret’s football program and your thoughts on Henry Welch. I’ve read the comments on why he left a Div I program and came to a Div 13 school. They have the longest winning streak in California and are they a shoe in for another undefeated season and championship?
Tom S
That is too bad Goldenarm --- graduation GPA doesn't help you get into college. Colleges are primarily concerned with your soph junior and sometimes first semester senior year gpa. Your junior year classes are generally more difficult than your soph classes (people start loading up on APs).
Those kids are missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime. I've never forgotten my varsity high school football experiences and the friends I made playing.
several kids are not playing this year, citing the overriding importance of junior year GPA. Is there any basis in fact that junior year GPA is more vital than soph or say graduation GPA?
These are not kids floundering in school, but pretty much high achievers. I am wondering if they or their parents fear the dual commitmment will sacrifice academics...strange since it did not during fresh/soph
Big A,
Hey I am back since the season is around the corner, here's new coming out of Lynwood. We have to watch him when we travel to their house this year.
LA TIMES: Lynwood defensive back Vachel Samuels, who's popped up big time on the recruiting radar over the last six months, has committed to the University of California.
That Lynwood team from last year reminded me of Muir.
JJimenez,
She was my high school sweetheart and we went to high school together, and she only lived in Rosemead but never attended Rosemead High.
It's all good though. I'm young, I'm single, I have a new car and I'm the new Preps Editor at the Star-News! Who needs a girl?!?! lol
Seriously though, I do know my way around the SGV, including East and West. I'm so ready to start making the calls and heading out to the field and jotting down my notepad with information. I just e-mailed the staff here at The Register so in a few hours I'll be on my way out and ready to start in the 626. See yall soon...
Miguel
I know exactly where you are talking about and It's cool that you know your way around but, you should know better than to miss with girls from the 'Mead. Even I don't do that...haha.
!!!FEAR THE 'MEAD!!! !!!WAR PANTHERS!!!
UCLA fan?! Terrific! We are the mighty bruins, the best team in the west... So Golper is still solid with UCLA right? Only got once chance to see him play once last year. Ballllller. Excited to get out and see what he can do during his senior year.
This question is for everyone - maybe even Fred since Miguel just hopped on board - besides, the two Amat kids committed to UCLA - what other SGV kids are looking at D1 offers? Its always great to see those kids playing on Saturday. I'm hoping Ryan Graves (Muir) gets on the field more this year - SGV!
so i'm still here waiting for my barber to hurry up and finish up. i was pondering about ridding of my cell but before deciding i thought i would try and see if i can access the blog on my cell and looks like i can! i'll check back later. -- Sent from my Helio

Look, Miguel hasn't even started and he's already started. You're going to like him, he's going to blow this blog up. Get ready for a great season Pasadena.
Hey Curious,
I'm barely in my mid-20's. Trust me, I'll have the energy to blog, cover games, write features, columns, notebooks and all. Just give me a laptop with a wireless connection and I'm ready to go. And Freddy and I don't get peanuts. We do pretty good.
When I was at The Register I covered three games a week, blogged four times a week, wrote weekly notebooks and a feature here and there on top of also covering the Angles, Dodgers, Lakers and UCLA/USC basketball for the Web. Yeah, I know, I'm an animal.
Thanks for the quick response. Yes, your picture definitely needs to be at the top of the blog like Fred's. Since they took Scott's picture off, it doesn't look like a blog. Way to jump into head first.
Curious George being curious,
Thanks for the congrats! And what I meant was that hopefully starting Monday the blog won't look like this. It'll look more like Freddy's with color and pictures and my banner on top, etc.
Deacon Blue, you're bad dude lol but it's all good. Thanks for the welcome. I just said my "good byes" on The Register blog. Check it out if you'd like.
http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/2008/08/01/melendez-how-do-i-say-good-bye/
I'm off to get a hair cut. Gotta look fresh for my last day at The Register so now's as good as time as ever to break out the Armani suit.
Miguel, will you have time to blog 24/7 and cover games? Or will you just have reporters covering the games and features? From what I've seen on Fred's blog, I hope you don't work yourself to death for peanuts. Good luck with it. It's nice to see you're enthusiastic.
Miguel, congratulations on your new position. I have a question though. How will you be able to change the cosmetics of the blog when it seems every blog from the Tribune and Star-News look the same?
Miguel,
Scott who? J/K welcome and good luck!
Darryl G, Goldenarm:
Thanks for the welcome. Don't mind me if I quickly stomp my feet on the welcome mat, throw my coat on the hanger, roll up the sleeves and get to work.
I'm so excited to already begin Monday. I couldn't sleep last night; didn't finally knock out until about 4 a.m. and I just woke up. I'm emptying my laptop bag and cleaning out my files because today I turn in my laptop and work my last shift at The Orange County Register.
My pal Jaime Cardenas, formerly of The Times, planned a whole weekend of fun to celebrate my new job and I'm psyched about that, too.
Thanks for all the info Goldenarm. Those are some good observations as always.
Darryl G, I won't hold it against you that you went to Keppel ;) It's all good.
Hey BigA, I told yall I would be all over this blog. I'm sure I'll catch you and Todd Golper down the road over at Arcadia High.
I used to blog a lot at The Register. Sometimes I would tell myself not to be on the blog 24/7 but sometimes it's addicting. I intend to keep you guys informed not just on high schools but anything else I feel you guys might be interested and I'll offer my thoughts, too. And you guys also will get a look into my life since I'll give you guys an insight to the life of a sportswriter. It's a tough job but someone's gotta do it.
Welcome Miguel,
Good to have a Bruin fan in the house!! I'm from all over the sg valley, I went to PHS, graduated from MARK KEPPEL (yeah, I know you're a Moor, not everyone is perfect:)) My kids went to Montebello and my wife went to Bell Gardens, so our household is rivalry heaven, we all talk trash and back up our schools. Good luck and welcome back.....
Miquel,
Bob Mierzerski(LA Times)was a Moor, myself as well, many moons ago. I've been a TC supporter now for a few years.
My recent comments may have been harsh because they were typed during a period of football starvation. Believe me, the welcome mat is out big time.
Some comments as you dive in:
There has been silence from PHS. Blair (new coach, can they repeat?). Just how good is Muir really? La Salle? Is Arcadia actually far better than some believe? TC is young and without a big gun in the backfield - will they contend or struggle? What is Mooney cooking at San Marino? Wildcat defense under Maddox - RHL beware! And of course the Moors with Crockom...what about their running game and D?
This is awesome! Our new editor is on TOP of the game on the blogs! Wow, I am impressed! As the real hsfbfan states, I also am a big Arcadia fan. Funny you happen to like UCLA considering we have a player who is committed there! Actually UCLA has 3 commits out of the SGV valley, 2 at Amat and one at Arcadia.
Hope everything turns out smoothly as you become a major part of us bloggers lives.
Welcome!
Hey Bob Anon,
I'm going to be all over this blog like white on rice. And I believe the URL will stay the same but the cosmetics of the blog will have a significant upgrade starting next week (and by significant upgrade I mean I'll customize and make it look more presentable).
And yes I'm a UCLA fan but when I was on assignment either at the Rose Bowl or at Pauley Pavilion covering the Bruins in footbal/basketball I always kept it real. Believe me. I was on assignment at Pauley when USC stunned the Bruins. It was horrible.
Hey hsfbfan, I'll keep my eye on Arcadia and hopefully those injuries don't pile on too soon.
Welcome Miguel! I am so excited to see you take over the blog. Will the URL stay the same? (of course, I've bookmarked this blog)
if you are a UCLA fan, though, please keep that bias to a minimum :)
Welcome.... I haven't been on for a while, at least 6 months, but I been blogging on here since june of 2006. I am an arcadia fan. As you probably know already, arcadia will be legit this year if they don't get the injury bug. They will fight hard with their pre-league schedule however I am worried how we'll fair around game 6 or 7 when injuries start popping up. We'll see.
Thanks, JJimenez. You know what's the weird thing? I haven't even showed that column to my mom! I've been meaning to but things came up here and there. I know, unleash the hounds!
But as far as Rosemead High .. That's ex-gf territory, so you won't see me on that side of the 626 .. lol j/k man! If I'm ever out there I'll be sure to swing by the In-N-Out on Rosemead and Mission and grab a double-double before the game. When I bought my car last year I got my windows tinted directly across the street from the football field and I go there a lot for my car accessories. So I know my way around 'MEAD territory.
Hey Miguel
Welcome and buena suerte. Read your Mother's Day piece and it reminded me how my dad use to see sports with my older brothers. It's also nice to see a Latino face "make it"
Just remember 1 thing...
!!!FEAR THE 'MEAD!!! !!!WAR PANTHERS!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm 5-foot-10 and wear a size 10. Freddy wears a shoe size eight doesn't he? j/k ... I hear what you're saying, Tom, and I my goal is to be your first source when it comes to WSGV athletics. I covered the SGV for three years when I was at the Tribune/Star-News as a part-timer and spent four years covering the OC at The Register.
Thanks for the advice and like yourself can't wait 'til things start rolling already.
I will be working alongside Freddy starting Monday and we'll get the blog up and running. So I hope you guys didn't get used to this starved-looking blog. Freddy and I already started going through ideas on what to feature in our football preview section. More on that next week.
Miguel:
Glad to see the Star News finally got the position filled and welcome to the WSGV and our blog.
You got some big shoes to fill following Freddy and Scott but I’m sure you’ll do a great job with your background.
One suggestion for you is don’t over look the small schools like Maranatha, La Salle, RHP and the others. These schools have a lot of passion and post many comments on here.
Looking forward to the fall season and all the goings on here
Tom S
Thanks, Dad of 3.
(Here's the link for those of you who want to read it: http://www.ocvarsity.com/ocvarsity/hshighlights/article_2040224.php)
Hey Dad of 3, you must have really gone digging on The Register's website to find my bio in the blogs section. I like your investigative skills. And yes, I'm a huge UCLA fan though I'm worried about who'll eventually play quarterback this year for the Bruins =/
Even though I worked for The Register I never really left the SGV. I always stayed on top of what was going on and I almost always included Pasadena when I went out with friends or on a date. I love the city. I love the region. I didn't realize this until now but I guess working here now is a dream come true.
Welcome to the WSGV. BTW, the article in the OC Register you wrote about your Mom was terrific. And if Fred was accurate about your being a UCLA guy, that makes you even a better pick for the new Ed. If he was joking, well , I guess we can't have everything and welcome anyway.
Thanks, Miketev. I was watching a few college football clips the other day and hearing the crowd roar gets me fired up; the smell of the freshly cut grass and of course the hot dogs and burgers sizzling on the grill. Gotta love Week 0....
ready as ever! welcome miguel!
Judging from the previous comments on this blog, it seems I should get on your good side, Goldenarm =)
Was there another Moors writer who penned here? I'm curious....Well, I officially start Monday but what the heck, I'll throw a comment and tune in now. Friday is my last day at the Orange County Register. It'll be bittersweet; my editors are sad to see me leave but are happy in my new endeavors. Enough with the Kleenex moments, ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL????
The Moors tend to kick out a good writer now and then......best of luck and congrats
Welcome (back) to the WSGV Miguel, and congrats!!! I can't wait another minute to get this season started.
LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!
