Maranatha mourns loss
You always hate to report news like this.
Maranatha's John Chavez died after he slipped and fell near the top of a waterfall, Inyo County Sheriff's officials said.
Talked to coach Joel Murphy on Thursday about this. The team had a meeting Wednesday night and no doubt they'll dedicate this season to Chavez who was going to be a starting linebacker for the Minutemen.
Here's the release from Maranatha High:
Maranatha Mourns Death of Student John Chavez
PASADENA -- Maranatha High School student John Chavez died on Wednesday, August 6th in a hiking accident at a summer camp in Southern California. He was 16.
Maranatha's Head of School, Chet Crane, said, "The Maranatha family mourns the tragic loss of John Chavez. He will be missed by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his fellow students during this difficult time. "
Although the school remains on summer break, school officials are offering immediate assistance to students, faculty and staff. Counseling services are available on an as needed basis as part of the school's crisis management plan.
The son of Ramona Chavez, John would have been a junior at Maranatha this fall and was a member of the school's Varsity Football team.
....My thoughts and prayers go out to the Chavez family, friends and anyone who knew him....

Rest in peace John.
You're in our hearts forever,
you will never be forgot.
My thoughts and prayers will go out to this family - and for the students of Maranatha. May God bring you strength and wisdom in the days to come.

Nothing is guarenteed.
My heart goes out to the Chavez family.
Rest in peace john chavez. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family
