The Top 5 QB's

| | Comments (26) |

QB's

1. Reuben Thomas, Sr., Muir - Strong arm, mobile and dangerous on the run. Coach Ken Howard says he's the best player in the SGV. We'll have to wait and see.

2. Chase Rettig, Jr., La Salle - Already a veteran as a junior. Good arm and a good size at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds. Mobile enough to get outside though he can also throw in the pocket.

3. Matt Schilz, Sr., Maranatha - There's not much he can't do and with his size (6-foot-3, 190 pounds) look for good things. Broke his femur last season in the second game against St. Margaret's but Coach Joel Murphy is expecting big things from him this season.

4. Isaac Valdez, Jr., San Gabriel - The All Almont-League quarterback returns and he'll anchor the offense for the Matadors.

5. Steven Wright, Sr., San Marino - Wright is back and he'll direct things for the Titans. Don't be surprised if he suddenly develops into a really good quarterback, especially with Mooney handling the offense.

Schilz, wow, I saw him on the camp circuit and the guy has a canon. No question. He just can't run, force him out of the pocket and see what happens. And his own team says he runs his mouth, runs his mouth and then runs his mouth.

We'll see how he does in real games, he paid enough $$$ for those camps, looks like they MAY pay off. Just a shame not every kid gets the same one on one coaching. What would some of the other QB's be like if they had 4 years of individual tutoring from Pro's?

Schilz has a strong arm but is very untested as he has yet to start as QB for an entire year. If he can keep his head together and show that he can lead the team, he will probably have a great year. Having already signed with a division 1 school could hurt him because some kids let it get to their head and that might spell a problem for Maranatha. Remember that if Schilz has trouble due to a young line and is forced out of the pocket or to throw early, Maranatha also has last years starter Danny Beckwith who is arguably the best backup in the area and a dual threat.

QB's are somewhat harder to rate nowadays because of how the position has changed in the last 10 years. With that said, Bingo is by far the most electric QB of the bunch...by far. Is he the best QB...no, he's not. Will he be the most valuable QB to his team...absoluetly!!! Rettig and Schilz, from what I have heard are pretty damn good traditional QB's who will both have great years.

Dad of 3 & Big A,

Hoover should win games this year, if those coaches carry Coach Dimalante's ways. I would say 4 to 5 games with a couple league upsets.

Miguel my brotha,

How can you leave out Darrian Cazzarin?
Oh well by the 2nd,3rd game this list will obviously change so it's all good. Not only does he have Mitchell Crockum, theres Brian Gonzales who's probably there best possesion WR not to mention one of the top kickers in the NATION,10th grade super stud,Vy peco, super quick super athletic kid,so I hope teams double up on the "MAN CHILD",cause theres plenty more were that came from-Anyways back to my point this list will change drastically!GO MOORS

Wright from SM will be a dangerous QB this year. SM threw alot of quick slants and RB out of the backfield last year...with a high completion and success rate. Some of the slants are actually close to being "picks" where a defender gets caught up in a crossing pattern and becomes unable to defend. This kid has an accurate arm and throws to the "correct" receiver, not the one blanketed in coverage. I would expect SM to have a solid passing game this year.

Hatch threw for 940 plus yds last year with the longest completion a mere 32 yds. As much as I love a pass attack, give me 200 plus yds on the ground anyday. Since the Hitchcock era I don't think TC has ever been feared solely as a passing team. Bottom line is I agree with blogger TC and very much support and anticipate a break out year for Morgan Hatch in 08. His mechanics are much improved and he is mobile and now seasoned with a year of invaluable experience. He is a tough determined kid who can sizzle the ball when need be. The 1-5 QB's above are a tough group to break into and Hatch is anything but the 6'3" prototype a la Rettig. Nonetheless, he will prove himself an excellent QB this year.
Go Rams.

Big A-

BTW, I guess Policky ended up coaching at Hoover after all . So that makes at least four Arcadia guys there: Long, Policky , Gowan and Bailey.

Big A-

Schilz didn't play much last year because of injury but he knows what he is doing and has skills. He impressed people on the camp circuit this summer and went to K State and worked out for their coaches and received an offer and committed. That speaks volumes for a kid who plays in a lower division and hardly played last year. His game against Rettig should be an interesting duel.

TC said:

Miguel,

You've got to have Morgan Hatch from TC up there. After a decent season last year, he should be much improved.

BigA said:

Thomas is the best HS player at this point.

Rettig is the best prospect.

I don't know how Schilz could be #3. He hardly played at all last year.

Valdez was an all-area selection so he should be #3 IMO.

Miguel,

your selections at QB highlight the matchup on Sept. 12 - La Salle at Maranatha. Rettig vs Schilz. should be a good one.
You are off to a good start, keep up the great work!
