BREAKING NEWS: Turkey Tussle date switched

| | Comments (24) |

Just got word that the Turkey Tussle (AKA Muir vs. Pasadena) has been pushed back from a Saturday afternoon game on Nov. 15 to Friday night, Nov. 14. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Rose Bowl.

The schools got word today from CIF they cannot play on the 15th because all football games must be played by the 14th. CIF uses the weekend to crank out the CIF playoffs bracket.

So leave your sunglasses and sunscreen at home and bring your blankies and hot chocolate.

My JMHS graduating class ('71) was one of the few (the only?) to have gone through all three high school years WITHOUT EVER ONCE WINNING THE TURKEY TUSSLE. PHS reigned supreme for that brief period, to our deep humiliation. MUSTANG PRIDE prevailed, though. It was in those same years (1969 - 1971) that the Mighty Mustang Drum Corps, under the visionary leadership of Sammy Estrada (also Class of '71), grew in number, technical virtuosity, originality, precision, and discipline. The Muir Drums coalesced under Sammy's watch into the awe-inspiring and soul-stirring entity which resonates to this day in the hearts and memories of every Muirite who still thrills at the memory of the slow cadences thundering out of the tunnels. Sammy composed new cadences for the Corps, greatly expanding its repertoire, and apparently his cadences are still played to this day. The call-and-response, the rear-back, the slow, Grambling-style strolling gait - just thinking about it brings me back to those cold, crisp November nights in the Rose Bowl.
BLUE & GOLD - GO MUSTANGS

Madd Dogg,

If you never lost to "them" and you played for Hamilton, we were probaly at PHS around the same time? I came to PHS in 1975, we lost to "them" for the first time in 13 years in 1977 (it was on tv that year). I understand your pain, I would bring my wife & kids to the Tussle, to have them see what a REAL rivalry was like. But,they like many HS fans & alumni have lost intrest because it has become so one sided.

Thanx but i'll still pass. For me it's like going to the hospital with a bunch of family hopin to see a family member pull through only to have the doctor give you the bad news.(please readers don't take this as literally). After 24yrs of bad news well......

It's not that I don't miss friends from the past but you, I and everyone who have supported HS come to the Tussle to see HS COMPETE with Muir. I played for Hamilton and I can PROUDLY say we never lost to "them" but to see the blowouts and lack of effort and terrible coaching I have found better games around So. Cal to attend. Heck with all the changes to their uniforms I don't recognize them any more. I don't know wether to wear red and white, black and grey, red and black. What is it this year Teel? I'd rather keep the memories because The rivalry use to have history and passion. The kids today don't even know where the bell came from and why and could probably care less. To me the game has become Muirs' crowning to the league title and that sickens me.

doggalum,

You're right............and "Pac-Man" was BRAND NEW when those guys were in high school.

It's been a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time since then bro. A LONG time!!!!

You know there are some Dogs out here, that have NEVER lost to a Stang.....
The game is played on the field not in the hallways.

Let's hope the Rose Bowl peeps do a better job of handling the crowd this year. Not letting in our photographer and a Muir team doctor standing next to him was a bit strange, even though they were on the list.

No you don't need to clear it with officials. They may give you a visitors pass, but that unlikely. If you don't resemble the knuckle-heads you talked about, then you'll be fine. There are some who wear the red and white. But I will warn you about the Homecoming assembly after Rock The Halls, its not nice to the Bulldog kind. But its all in good sport.

Friday...Saturday...Tuesday....Sunday...

Does it really matter? Different days...same result. Another notch in the "W" column for the Stangs. Right Huckster?

@Stangs03

I might just take you up on that invitation. Do we need to clear it with school officials first? and of course I'll be wearing Red & White. I'll take off my "BEAT MUIR" buttons & stuff, since it's at "Your House"... But I've always liked the drumline at MUIR, since my days at Eliot Middle School when the colorguard would march out to the front of the school to raise the flag, and would play Muir's beat.

And Madd Dogg,

Just get off work at your normal time, and roll on up to the bowl. There's always Alumni and friends to see since it is homecoming for both schools. I would visit on the MUIR side and the PHS side, but lately they've put the crowds on lockdown, you can only stay on one side or the other (progress?) no, just the effects of the knuckleheads in dena...enough said.......

So PHS meets their fate a day early. It couldnt come faster for the Mustangs. Hey Miguel, I know you are new to the area, and the traditions. I know as a journalist you have to be impartial which is totally understandable. But seeing as the Turkey Tussle date has been moved up, I cordially invite you to Rock The Halls at Muir. I dont want to get too much away, but I will need you on Muir campus approx. 11am. Guaranteed their will be a vast array of Muir Legends, as well as professional legends. All are welcome to the school as well. If you have never experienced Rock The Halls, let this be your first opportunity.

LaDamian, if you dont know who pkays in the turkry tussle, dont even warry yourself!!!!

It doesn't matter what day the game is changed to, PHS doesn't show up anyway. I got it don't tell Muir and when they don't show we win by forfeit LOL!!!!! We at the dog house have far too much to worry about than a date change. I'll just schedule myself to work late this way i'm not tempted to stop by and see the mascre!

Uh, might be worthwhile to include a sentence on who plays in this "Turkey Tussle," Not everybody who reads your blog is necessarily going to be clued in.

Muir-Pasadena? Temple City-South Pas? La Canada-San Marino?
