....High School Heisman Watch 2008....

| | Comments (39) |

The Heisman Trophy is the most prestigious award in college football. Florida QB Tim Tebow last season became the first sophomore ever to win the coveted award.

The award is named after the great John W. Heisman who made countless contributions to the game, including the forward pass which became legal in 1906 after three years of writing and pestering Walter Camp and the rules committee. Much of the official rule book in the day adopted Heisman's suggestions word for word, according to the Heisman Trophy's website.

The equivalent of our Heisman is the Area Player of the Year. For football purposes we'll call it our High School Heisman.

I will have a top 5 list every Wednesday with my "High School Heisman Watch". The list of player is in no particular order and you'll note some players will jump in and out depending on their performance.

Without further adieu, The List:

1. Dietrich Riley, St. Francis, RB, Jr.

2. Matt Schilz, Maranatha, QB, Sr.

3. Joey Stewart, Temple City, RB, Sr.

4. Marcus Graves, Muir, WR, Sr.

5. Mitchell Crockom, Alhambra, WR, Jr.

77 for the mustangs oline should be there

justafan said:

Yo advocate I totally agree w you on that size matter.
I think it sucks for these undersized guys that get over-looked cause they don't pass the eye test. And I agree Valdez probably should be on the list cause pound 4 pound he's a hellava QB one of the top's in the SGV.Wish him the best.Except against the MOORS!LOL

THE ADVOCATE said:

hahaha.. i didnt mean he was physically a beast. But he plays bigger than he is. 5'5 on a good day. that is probably true. hahahahahaha. I just felt that he should be mentioned on the list at some point because he is a gifted player. and i feel that bcuz he is small he gets over looked.

corprateballer said:

Issac Valdez is a BEAST? I wouldnt go there...
and even though size doesn't matter, the kid is 5'5 on a good day...but like i said height doesn't matter in High school and trust me you weren't hurting my feelings buddy! I apologize if it came off that way. He's a great great lil Qb and the best player on SG's team period.
Heisman? well if you wanna go and take him as your pick then you go right ahead...too bad he wasn't 6'2 6'3 I would love to see another Chicano athlete playing on saturdays.

THE ADVOCATE said:

CorporateBaller,

I am just saying Isaac Valdez is a beast especially at 5'7. He is probably just as good or better than the LS and Maranantha Qbz. He just does not get any love because he is small. And Sg's o-line is small and very young but Isaac gets it done and is very shifty and smooth in the pocket. I just feel that Isaac should make the list. Sorry if it hurts your feelings

miguel i like the idea. But you have to come to a Muir game ( the tussel doesn't count)

O-cat,

Of course. Golper was fortunate. But he did have four other offers from Div 1 programs and maybe would've had more had he not committed so early.

Park is a solid player. He did have a good game in the Monrovia match.

I'm sure Golper will do whatever is asked for him. After all, he did play his last 3 games with a broken wrist last year and played 3/4 of the St. Francis game with a broken toe. Heart isn't a question for this kid.

Interesting on the Burroughs/SF score. I thought Burroughs would give them a better game. SF is for real.

I know your getting sick of me by now, But as I recall Golpler Had UCLA in his back pocket from the outset, Granted he is a good athlete, but It certainly helps when your ex-QB's Dad is the defensive coordinator for the UCLA Ruins...(woops that may have been a freudian slip) by the way thats's my old alma mater): I hope he doe's well there because they need to toughen up the D. I'll tell you who impressed me from your team is that little kid #4 Park he made the difference in the Monrovia/Arcadia game...He played with his heart and made a few good plays that seemed to spark the Arcadia D. I hope that Golper plays the rest of the season with a lot of heart and integrity because when you make that transition from high school to college there are going to be guys who are much faster much stronger and play with plenty of enthusiam for the game. Hopefully Golper will be that guy....it is easy to loose focus when your'e starring down your compettion and feeling you have nothing more to prove at this level.

BigA said:

Foreal,

You are so far from the truth. Neuheisel and Carrol look at public/private in the same eye. Golper is from Arcadia, a public school and he has a scholie from UCLA? Richard Brehaut is from Los Osos and that is a public school and he has a scholie to UCLA.

Come on.

OMG People. You are all acting like this Heisman Trophy for High School is gonna win these kids a free rider into college. The man is simply voicing his opinion on what kids he feels have potential and dedication to their game and team. These kids all know their not going to win a Mega Bucks Lottery, but don't you think it's a boost to the self esteem and self confidence to see their names and their accomplishments. Lighten up!

FoReal said:

Pete Carroll and Rich N. look first at private schools! That's it that's all, which is fine don't get me wrong.
Academics are needed to be on there list! You have do be a mighty one, a whole package to get picked from public school. We will probably see him play in his junior or senior year at USC. More power to him. Good luck with that!!

justafan said:

Yo GOLDENARM,
This isn't week 1 and they can sleep overnight in the film room.....not gonna help on friday night and there will be no upset. And why would it be an upset? according to Mr Melendez we should be 0-2...The "CnC factory",will be too much for spartans.A-TOWN 42-0!

New York said:

I hope we don't get into a class war of public vs. private school. Heck, the kids are all locals, right? Local papers should cover local kids.

Did Alhambra play TC LAST week? I mean everyone has been so silent on these blogs about games that happened LAST week! Stop living in the past, whats done is done.

MOORFAN said:

YO MIGUEL
YOU'RE REALLY TOUCHING A NERVE OVER HERE AT YOUR ALMA MATER...WHY DO YOU KEEP INSISTING THAT TC PLAYED BAD
AND THAT TC SHOULD HAVE WON????????
AHS BEAT THEM STRAIGHT UP THERE WAS NO DROPPED BALLS
THEY WERE FORCED PASSES BY THE D-LINE PRESSURE.
MAYBE YOU CAN CALL THAT GREAT DEFENCE.THE MOORS ALSO
DROPPED 4-5 INT"S OR THE SCORE WOULD HAVE BEEN 35-10.
AND YOU SEEMED SO SURPRISED ON HOW TC LOST TO MOORS,WHY?
DON"T YOU GET YOUR FACTS UPDATED???WE've BEATEN TC THE LAST 2-3 YEARS BUDDY! LAST YEAR WAS 48-0.
START GIVING CREDIT WERE CREDIT IS DUE...
WE SHUT DOWN A GREAT QB OVER AT TC-HOW YOU LIKE THEM CHARACTERISTICS??????????

The Stang Fan said:

Apparently Pete Carrol and Rick Neuheisel think Dietrich Riley is fast enough and strong enough...and when they offered him he hadn't even played a DOWN during his JUNIOR year yet!

This kid is hands down the best talent in our area...PERIOD!!!

Btw Miguel, I think Bingo might deserve to be on this list. Myles Campbell is also a hell of a talent, but he doesn't play any defense, so I wouldn't include him here unless he happens to go berzerk the next few weeks.

Observantcat said:

Miguel:
If thats the case for Marquise, why would you put a unproven name in front of him? No Offense goldenarm, but Joey Stuart?.....I dont think even the TC faithful would choose him over Marquise...

anonymous said:

how about Todd Golper LB? 30+ Tackles, I think 3 Sacks, 2 force fumbles, a fumble recovery for a touchdown.? All in two games.

Miguel Melendez said:

I'm not sold on Marquise just yet. He has the talent, no doubt, but he's only shown glimpses of what he's capable. When he starts tearing it up like I think he will he'll make the list. Until then, the verdict is still out.

Younker is a monster. I got to talk to him during the Linemen Feast at his house a few weeks ago. I hope to see him later tonight.

As far as the private schools getting more coverage? I don't know about that, at least not on my part. This "newspaper guy" went to public school his whole life.

FoReal said:

in my opinion H. School Heisman would go to M.Williams. He has way more speed and strength over Riley! Hands down. Once the offensive line is worked on and they get it right with blocking for Williams -beware!! To compare these two is really off limits because of schools. One knows that Private schools get more recoginition than Public schools anyway. It's all Political if you don't mind me adding.

LEADBONE said:

First of all this Heisman talk is a little premature. Two, three games into the season does not make a Heisman.
Second, Rian Younker- St. Francis D-lineman is a complete beast! If you have not seen this kid play- go TREAT yourself. This kid makes tackles 30-yards down the field!! Had the only sack, forced a fumble which SF recovered, and blocked a punt to go with the nine credited tackles for the game. The CV center looked like he was on roller skates all night.
Third, Issac Valdez-San Gabriel QB is and should not be on that list. If SG finishes 3-7 it will be a successful year. They have been blown out twice in three weeks and their only win is against a weak South Pasadena. Throwing the bubble screen all night won't get it done.

I'm just say'in said:

High School Heisman? Come on people don't you think that's going to far?

Matt said:

Goldenarm, we need to get together and talk football somewhere other than on this blog.

Matt said:

LC has nobody who can keep up with good wide receivers. They also have no concept of how to move the ball through the air. Coaching is the problem not the kids.

Goldenarm said:

selected picks

Monrovia beats Beckman on a night where the Cats tourniquet the turnovers and Williams gains 150 plus on the ground. The Maxpreps tackle board proves Monrovia has 13 guys on defense rather than 11....must be the gang-tackling center of the universe. Bueno is the sleeper QB of the RHL, way better than the review I gave him after the Bonita tourney. 35 -14 Monrovia

Arcadia - plays hard, loses a close one....uhhhhh, no I mean comes back in OT and wins!

San Marino - steamroller city.

Wild hair game - La Canada lives in the film room..Spartans upset Moors 28-21. Report from Matt / justafan to follow....reminding everyone GA has lost it 100%.

Mtn View over Keppel, Blair Vikes find a way at PCC 10-7, (while city of Pasadena makes 2 grand in parking tickets)

TC - who are we and what have we got? Is our Defense and PF/PA ratio going to maintain? Can we sustain a drive and lay the wood?? Can we get to the QB? Friday is answer day.

stangsfan said:

how about myles campbel tyree mills and fernando aguialar just throwing some other names

Anonymous said:

How about a defensive player you didnt mention any defensive players on your Heisman watch. Please post some defensive players for example defensive linemen.

BigA said:

Well if being most valuable to your team, look no farther than Arcadia. Let's see how they do this week without him against a pretty good Lynwood squad.

corprateballer said:

Issac Valdez needs to worry about TC friday night.
The kid is a tough and probably the best lil player
on the team, but his o-line is on a scale from 1-10? 3!
That's just reality advocate.South Pasadena is probably
the worst s.pas team i've seen in a while...not that there ever are the greatest but I wouldn't get to excited
over that victory. That's just reality...not taking anything away from the kid as a player but he will have tons of trouble w/ out a line.Good luck against the Rams
and may the best team win.I can almost say may the best QB win cause I heard that Hatch kids pretty good to!

THE ADVOCATE said:

ISAAC VALDEZ NEEDS TO BE ON THIS LIST!!!

Observantcat said:

How about Marquise Williams?......He is on your all area impact list and he probably will lead the RHL in rushing amd maybe the West San Gabriel Valley!

justafan said:

I think it's a good idea.I also feel that the player
has to be an IMPACT player,
along with the stats to back it.
I'm gonna stick with my #1 horse Mitchell Crockum.
Even though he's been 60% health wise with a hip flexor,
In two games he's caught 13 receptions for 290 yds.
that is 22.3 yds per catch. At the WR position this is outstanding. His health is closer to 100% this week
So expect a HUGE game from my Heisman choice friday night. And good luck to the rest of the candidates!!!

Miguel Melendez said:

Player is being evaluated mainly on what he does on the field; his performance and how valuable he is to his team and the impact he has on the team. If the kid is good then he'll be on this list. I'm not really considering GPA but the player needs to obviously be in good standing.

Stangs03 said:

I like the idea. Now how are you evaluating these young men? By overall performance, stats, GPA, winning teams, impact players. Basically, if a kid is on a team that overall isn't good, will he still be considered?
