Saturday Morning Quarterback Postgame: La Salle wins, Monrovia impressive, Temple City succumbs. Time to talk your smack or cry me your wimpy river!

San Marino came away with a 52-6 victory but that is no surprise. The Titans (3-0) had six penalties and helped Hoover (0-3) move the ball in its favor with a few chances to score.

Credit to Emmanuel Sells who recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter after the Indians penetrated into Titans territory. Unfortunately, it was a Sells blown coverage that led to Hoover's scoring.

All in all, San Marino showed it can throw the ball, albeit it came against a weak team. Still, Hoover needs to find a way to give the ball to backup quarterback Aj Pule. The kid can really throw the ball and is very accurate. He's mobile and not afraid to take a hit down the field. He helped Hoover record a few first downs in the fourth. If he can get some players to step up Hoover might be decent next year.

Here's an interesting note. I was wearing a new suit today (celebrating my b-day after I leave the office here) so I decided to cover the game from the press box to avoid getting it sweaty or dirty. When I sat in the press box, two Hoover coaches walked into my side of the box to send signals to the coaches on the field. It got crowded but it didn't last fast.

After Dooley's 55-yard run with 3:37 left in the first quarter, both coaches slammed the table, got up off their seats and left. It was as if they threw the white flag.

I found that kinda strange but a bit comical.

Tonight's Scores with my thoughts
San Marino 52, Hoover 6 -- Dooley looked great, Wright looked good but there were six Titans penalties. Yikes.

San Gabriel 28, Temple City 21 -- I'm not gonna say I told you so. I'm not gonna say it. The Matadors needed a final 90-yard drive in the final minutes to get the victory. How does that happen? The score was 7-7 at the half. Joey Stewart had 18 carries in the first half but he was used sparingly in the second half. He had only seven carries for 44 yards. TC had a fourth and 2 at about midfield but Stewart was stuffed on his last carry for a no gain that pretty much ended the game.

Alhambra 21, La Canada 17 -- Moors come from behind again to win.

Lynwood 27, Arcadia 7 -- No Golper, no win. Can't say I'm surprised. I should have known but at least the Apaches didn't get blown out like some thought.

Glendale 48, South Pasadena 7 -- Nitros coming out of nowhere.

Monrovia 32, Beckman 7 -- Beckman looked terrible but it's a credit to the Wildcats D. I said it earlier this week: It's only a matter of time until they all click with the Wing-T.

Jefferson 27, Blair 6 -- Neither team could do anything but Jefferson's ground attack proved to be too much. Jefferson threw only four passes.

South Hills 48, Duarte 6 -- Gutsy for the Falcons to even play Huskies.

La Salle 19, Bosco Tech 14 -- Lancers offense still staggering but at least they came out on top, finally.

Mountain View 28, Keppel 8 -- What else is there to say, really.

Village Christian 14, Gabrielino 6 -- Gabrielino offense an enigma.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

The best way to destroy your relationship with your body and to get into a trap of diets/weight loss/weight gain is starting already now dieting. diets don't work. Ever! Keep focusing on your blog. I love how we can all express our feelings. This is an extremely nice blog here :)

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

I think all of the fans may like it too.

Bigfatfan,
Blairs great performance last year was not an aberration, it was the result of a great coach, TIP and good athletes. So sad to read that a solid middle of the road program is SP’s measure of success. That is a joke or should be. Last year…..blah blah blah, SP has never made it to CIF playoffs!. Therefore, do not throw stones if you live in a glass house! BTW, are you implying the kids at Blair are academically ineligible? Are you implying that the students at SP are superior athletes and students…your not only a joke but in denial.

In the Know said:

Stang Fan,
I don’t believe anyone wants that to happen but I also know it was a topic of discussion. Calling people idiots based on personal opinion reveals ignorance. The factual basis for your diatribe is that Mr. Diaz goes to Muir Girls basketball games? Diaz was actually a high school football coach but what does that matter? Muir has been an academically low performing school for years and the state was hours from stepping in and taking over. Look at the big picture dude, if the state takes over, funding for certain programs will be cut. To my knowledge the discussion was not in the final stages but the finger was moving toward the button. So before you are mandated to take a double dose of nitro glycerin to subside the heart palpitations you apparently must be having understand regardless of tradition or what anyone wanted it was a possibility. There have been drastic changes at Muir and the PUSD was able to buy time by restructuring the academics. Hopefully the students will continue to improve on academics but if they do not and the state steps in this subject will be revisited.

I hope you’re right that it may never happen but to look the other way and ignore the test scores is being naïve. I see you are operating under the premise that the PUSD cares about the children. As the kids write it “LOL”. Keep in mind the PUSD won’t allow the community to vote on such a matter. A decision will be made and the community will be required to use its resources to reverse the decision, by then someone’s season is lost. Remember how Diaz was presented and the community could do nothing about it.

Stang Fan when people start calling others names it is usually a reflection on themselves.

I’m off my soap box and back to Football.
Good luck to all of the student athletes this weekend.

Okay. I'm going to say this just one more time:

MUIR IS NOT SHUTTING DOWN ITS SPORTS PROGRAM!!!!!!!

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER SHUTTING DOWN ITS SPORTS PROGRAM!!!!!!

NEVER! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!!!!

NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!! NOT EVER GONNA HAPPEN!!!!

PERIOD!!! POINT BLANK!!!

Can I make this ANY CLEARER? I don't care what some kid or what some anonymous blogger thinks or says, but it simply IS NOT going to happen. As a matter of fact Supt. Diaz is somewhat of a big sports fan and has been spotted at more than a few of Muir's sporting events, namely the girls CIF championship game and even two weeks ago at the game vs. Oaks Christian. The mere thought of the many negative repercussions of such an idiotic, ludicrous, downright STUPID suggestion would be enough to put this piece-of-sh** rumor to rest. No athletic scholarships. No school pride. No Turkey Tussle. What about the Pacific league? Lawsuits? COmmunity outrage? TONS of kids choosing to go to other schools to participate in sports, therefore seriously hurting a school that the district has put a TON of money and effort into. THe list goes on and on.

Listen you moronic numskulls. Use your fu**ing BRAINS and COMMON SENSE!!! Your nonsensical continuation of such a dim-witted and ridiculous rumor shows just how dense some of you jackasses really are.

IDIOTS!!!

Philly B. said:

Whoa PUSD is really considering disbanding the sports programs at MUIR????? Are you kidding?? Muir wouldnt be known across southern Cali if it wasnt for their sports programs. Granted we all know that Academics is the most important at all schools that we are fans or parents, or boosters for. So lets not go that route. I use to go their and its just being ignorant. If this is true and they actually pull the plug which I think would take alot because I doubt parents and boosters are going to take that sitting down, I just think that would be the dumbest thing that PUSD could do, disbanding the sports program??? Why dont they get better teachers to inforce academics??

New York said:

Dismantling athletic programs in favor of focusing on "academics" is would be foolish. The best academic institutions in the country have a huge sports influence. As a local exampley, look how successful the Pasadena Poly baseball team has been recently and how successful their football program was up until a few years ago.
Learning how to compete and win (and lose) as a team IS part of a very valuable education.

Anonymous said:

Blair Fan,
I will chime in one more time and be done. Let’s put to rest the academic side. I think we will all agree that academics are the number one objective for all the students. That being stated I have nothing against the new coaching staff at Blair, as a matter of fact I wish them the best. But when you make comments about young men not leaving as better men I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. They might not be what you want them to be but I know 3 to 4 students who graduated because of the opportunity to play football. Without football they would not have come close to graduation. I think graduating is leaving as better men. Also firing a coach is the principals right but don’t you think he should have had the decency or courage to tell the coach? That goes to the character of the man. And finally your right you can’t have a winning program year after year when after one year of winning the principal reneges on his word and basically fires the coach. VikingFan just think your principal and AD dismantled a successful year to go back to the bottom to build to where they were in the first place. Kind of backwards but to each is own. Good luck.

PS If your principal tries to give you a cup of kool aid, don't drink it.

StangFan be careful I hear there has been serious talk by the PUSD and Diaz about disbanding the sports program at Muir.

New York said:

Sounds like a job for GloucesterCoach.

SPfan said:

I think its time.

Especially since the baseball coach, who really was the best football coach at SP, is now splitting his time between the two programs, leaving the head football coach more responsible for the team and exposing his inadaquacies.

A fresh, committed, and new approach seems necessary.

bigfatfan said:

SP fan:

well, the approach of leadership change worked with the baseball program a couple of years ago when the community got sick and tired of the rag tag baseball program and inept leadership. maybe a similar ground swell approach could work here with football. SPHS Booster Club would be a place to start.

SPfan said:

If they squandered the talent last year and the minimal talent this year and this has been going on for years, what makes you think it will change in the upcoming years? No matter what the talent level is like, the coaches have to take responsibilty for developing a program that makes due with what they have? Its seems like they are protected or living in a bubble or something. The resources are definitely there.

The definition of insanity is doing the the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. It is time for a change.

The Stang Fan said:

Viking Fan,

I just thought I'd express MY OWN opinion on the situation at Blair...if I offended anyone, that certainly was not the intention. Yet, to say that this is simply a forum to only discuss how teams are doing is a little dismissive. If an administration or an administrator doesn't adequately support a program or doesn't appear to be doing anything to help the the program than they are leaving themselves open to a little criticism.

Now, in response to the rumor that Muir is losing its athletic program and becoming an "academic school"....uhhhhh...aren't ALL schools inherently academic? Of course some schools have a better academic reputation thean others, but the purpose of any and all schools is to be "academic." For someone to suggest that kids in NW Pasadena can not study AND play sports is OFFENSIVE. Is it more difficult to be a student-athlete than it is to simply be a student? Absolutely. But our kids are quite capable of doing both AND excelling in one or the other, or even both.

Muir WILL NEVER lose its sports programs....EVER!!! The tradition of athletic excellence is much too rich and is an important fabric of the school and community. The goal with the new restructuring of the school is to now have the academic excellence match that of the athletic department. I believe they will.

LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bigfatfan said:

SPfan:

dont get me wrong, I've got a kid on SP varsity football this season, I'd love to see the program do better. Yes, last year, we had a ton of talent, and it was squandered. That talent is gone this year, and the goals for football have to be modest. one can only hope that 2009 and 2010 seasons will bear fruit with the sophmores that are coming up in the system.

considering that La Salle teams have to commute from Pasadena to Torrence (Bishop Montgomery) and to Santa Monica (St. Monica) to play these league opponents, CIF may be wanting to discuss with the Archdiocese about cutting back on travel requirements for students in light of current economic and gas price issues and place La Salle in a league where all its opponents are close by??

I actually cant believe that your saying that Boccia doesnt care about his teams. If you had even the slightest clue about the enormous amount of time and dedication I have witnessed him put into his VERY difficult school and the lives of indiv students & families through the years, youd have some respect. He is a principal, his main focus is not the Football program, and I think its foolish to think it should be, although he seems to be a big supporter from my standpoint. The AD has clearly a bigger role than your considering and by putting all the blame on a principal your letting the REAL person off the hook.
-As far as Tip goes, lets be clear: He's a good guy, from the old skool, who does know how to work out. BUT as far as his coaching record goes - he FINALLY had a decent season after being dropped a division into the current league. For many years the yellow and green the Vikings were known as they league punching bag and had not seen victory like last season. ON a side note, there were many players who I heard ended up ineligible halfway through the season and did not leave the program as 'better men', a big part if not the biggest part of coaching in my opinion. I still have high hopes for this new coach and his seniors even for this year.

ON a side note, there were many players who I heard ended up ineligible halfway through the season and did not leave the program as 'better men', a big part if not the biggest part of coaching in my opinion. I still have high hopes for this new coach and his seniors even for this year.

bigfatfan,

In my humble opinion, never making the CIF playoffs is being in disaray. It just so happens that dissaray seems normal at this point, because it has been that way for so long with this coach. Last year SP had a great deal of talent and it was wasted then. There is no way that that team should not have made it to the playoffs. And the fact that other teams at the school prosper, at least enough to often times make the playoffs, should point to the fact that there is enough general talent and athleticism in the area to be successful.

As a booster, taking the time to evaluate the performance of the current coach should show you that the kids in the area deserve better. You will be surprised to find out what an energetic coach who doesn't give up on kids can accomplish.

Middle of the road is bad and bad should not be good enough.

bigfatfan said:

Anonymous: Blair's performance on the football field last year was a complete aberation. Just look to the rest of their sports programs at that school, they are a complete joke. their inclusion in the Rio Hondo league is a joke. As for SP football, the program has solid middle of the road asperations. while I dont like those low goals, its the way it is. Last year we knocked off Glendale, San Marino and La Canada, and were one kickoff return away from beating TC and getting to the playoffs. this does not look like a program in disarray, and the rest of the sports programs at the school are solid, and the Boosters and parents are demanding more successes; hence the firing of the previous baseball coach two years ago. and yes, the SP kids are academically eligible.

Viking Fan said:

And before it keeps going and going, let's just drop the issue of Boccia and how he feels or doesn't feel about the team. I thought this forum was to talk about how the teams are doing. Not the administration.

Good luck to everyone.

Viking Fan said:

The year all the coaches were fired, they were fired for a reason that people who don't have anything to do with Blair know nothing about. He didn't fire Tip. Yes there were some issues between them, but he didn't fire Tip. Coach Parks was hired and is doing a good job with the kids. Everyone's talking about how we had a winning program last year, blah blah blah. We had a winning team. A winning program is winning more than one year. That's Coach Parks' goal. And Boccia supports him in that.

On a different note, my daughter has really close friends at Muir, and she heard that Muir's getting rid of their sports programs in the near future so that it can become an academic school. Any truth to that? That would be a shame.

SPfan said:

South Pas football has been mismanaged for quite some time. They usually start off pretty good until they fall apart and then they finish terribly. The bad part about this year is they started off bad. Who knows where it is going to go from here. The coaches tend to claim that they have no talent and then proceed to missuse the talent that they have. There is a smoke screen of arrogance in the coaching staff. It is truly amazing that the coaching staff has squandered so much talent over the years but has been able to keep their jobs. If quality coaching and winning is taken away as a requirement for the job, then a team like South Pas can go on losing for many years. The booster club should put some pressure on the school.

Its time for a change.

Anonymous said:

Viking fan your principal does not care about the sports program. Word is last year Boccia fired most of the coaches on staff at Blair and did not tell the coaches he fired them. Coaches found out they weren’t coming back by seeing their job posted on the CIF “coaches wanted” board. One of the coaches he kept was Tip and he was gone the next year. Either that was lack courage or arrogance on Boccia part but not caring and not for the good of the student body.

Anonymous said:

Bigfatfan,

South Pas has a 1-2 record, beating only Hoover. So yeah, I guess SP should continue to play the Blair's and Marshall's so SP can have a good record....They need it! BTW, I see SP will play Keppel..ohhh SP record will be even better! What a joke!

The Stang Fan said:

NY,

Spoken from a TRUE hog. LOL!!! And you're absolutely right. Btw, I missed that Miami/NE game...did they REALLY run a single wing vs. the PATS!!! That's awesome!!

Viking Fan,

C'mon now...it's almost common knowledge in Dena and the PUSD that Mr. "Pompous" Boccia could care less about the success of his school's football team. Anonymous is right, if he cared he'd have done much more to help his program...starting with keeping Coach Tip. Btw, EVERY principal wants their team to be academically eligible...that goes without saying.

While putting La Salle in the Rio Hondo league would be great and make sense, I don't see it happening. The CIF just did re-alignment, and moved La Salle to a different division than the RHL. Also, I don't think the Archdiocese would go for it - they seem to like the Catholic schools in the same league. I think this is a rumor.

Stang fan, I gotta take some offense about your comment about Boccia. He cares about these kids and wants them to win games AND be academically eligible. If he didn't care he wouldn't be at all the games.

bigfatfan said:

New York, though I am a South Pas booster, and we usually look to games against Blair as ways to boost our records, I too feel that putting La Salle into Rio Hondo league would be great from the overall competition standpoint. It would be a solid league, top to bottom.

Anonymous said:

Blair, Duarte and Marshall in the same league could work. First though Marshall needs to win a game. If they don't beat Godinez this weekend and beat them pretty good the football program should be disbanned for a couple of years before someone gets hurt. Godinez is in its first school year and its first year of varsity competition. If you can’t beat them the situation is hopeless. Good luck to Marshall, Blair and Duarte.

New York said:

Stang Fan,

I'm not familiar with Tip's regiment or formations. Although, did you see the Miami Dolphins execute the single wing last week against the Pats? Old school as you can get. There is no reason for Pasadena teams to not produce good linemen. I'm not talking about D-1 linemen, because that has a lot to do with height, which nobody can teach. Remember though, producing a good line is different than producing good linemen. A good line needs to play together (virtually in unison) and not make mistakes.

bigfatfan,
Replacing Blair with La Salle would be terrific for the RHL. Maybe the CIF can put Blair into a league with Marshall and Duarte.

The Stang Fan said:

NY,

Actually by "old school" I meant his training regiment and his playbook. He has been criticized on this blog before for not incorporating new forms of training methods and for being way too basic in his offensive formations and play calling.

As you said, there is a reason why TC was pretty damn good with Mooney at the helm even though they weren't stocked with a myriad of athletes, and why SM should be tough this year as well.

bigfatfan said:

speaking of Blair's future, I have heard a rumor that next school year (2009-2010), CIF plans to move Blair out of the Rio Hondo League and replace them with La Salle. this would apply for all sports. any word on this??

New York said:

Stang Fan,
If "old school" means manufacturing linemen, then I will take old school every time. As you mentioned, any quality program that stands the test of time will consistently field interior linemen who get it done. Rumor has it that Mike Mooney is San Marino's line coach this year...Coaching the o-line is difficult. You need to make sure that 5 or 6 guys are doing their job on every play. When one of six misses their assignment there is a high probability of a busted play. I've seen a lot of BIG lines get whipped because those big boys are confused and not going full speed. Or, sometimes the back or QB runs/rolls to the outside right into the teeth of where the line is pushing the defenders.

Grueling off-season conditioning(maintenance conditioning in-season) as well as plenty of repetition at practice make for good line play. "Say it once, and rep it a thousand times." You don't teach line play (entirely) on the chalk-board.

The Stang Fan said:

The problem with Blair and Marshall is that there are way too many schools, private and public, in the Pasadena area to consistently field good teams at all schools. So what you have is a couple of "football schools," like Muir and SF, and then you have schools who will field decent to really good teams every now and again.

The city of Pasadena has a bunch of athletes, so every school always has a couple of skill guys that can ball. However, Pasadena isn't known for producing many lineman, the main ingredient for a successful program. When you thin out the hogs between ALL the local schools it becomes difficult to win on a consistent basis. Although Muir continues to win, the one knock has always been that the Stangs don't have the quality depth in the interior to go deep in the playoffs every year.

The reason why Tip was successful at BOTH Blair and Marshall was that he has the uncanny ability to turn average Joe's and thicker, stocky athletes into servicable linemen. His methods may be old school, but in the leagues and divisions that both schools played in those old school basics still work. Tip couldn't tell you the difference between a plyo and pilates, but he'll push your a$$ so hard in the weight room you can't help but to get stronger...which is EXACTLY what he did for the Vikings and Eagles.

Good luck to Blair this year and down the road, but I just don't see a consistent .500 team on South Marengo. Btw, I too have heard that your AD is TERRIBLE, and Lord KNOWS Boccia could care less about the success of some football team. It's too bad for those kids who give it their all every day.

Anonymous said:

Blair fan,
Yes this is the Blair of old but it will get better. It won’t get to the point of where it was last year because Blair will not get the type of athletes they had last year. They were good athletes with a lot of challenges and needed a lot of the coach’s attention. Blair can eventually look for .500 seasons. I feel sorry for the seniors though as they have to go through this unanticipated rebuilding process because of the principal and AD personal agendas. In a couple of years Blair will be fine and back to 5 and 5 maybe 6 and 4.

Does anyone know where Marshall’s Terrell Burnett is and why he left?

Arcadia could miss the playoffs if Golper is out for an extended period. But if he is back by the Glendale game and Rambeau's ankle heals, they should finish in the top four of the Pacific League and therefore make playoffs. What I have heard is that Golper has a hairline fracture and sprain of his big toe but the sprain is a bigger problem at this point. He was seen on the sideline at the UCLA game on Saturday still walking in a boot.Considering Golper's apparent ability to play through pain, it would be surprising if he is not back for the Glendale game

If it were'nt for a few mental lapses on the D.....Monrovia could well be 3-1. Hal Lam,

You're ABSOLUTELY right! The old, tired, boring cliche of taking "one game at a time" is so apropos here. The Stangs are staring 9-1 right in the face if they can only avoid the usual mental letdowns high school players are apt to go through at some point during the long 10 week season. My biggest fear is that the players hold their opponents in such low regard that they in turn come out flat and get their a$$es handed to them by a team who is hungry and DYING to beat the Stangs. It's one thing for has-been bloggers like myself to speak on the outcome of a game but the players should take EVERY TEAM seriously...especially this year. Glendale, Burbank, and CV are ALL better than they were last year and a healthy Burroughs is still pretty tough.

(Sidenote: Btw, does anyone think Arcadia will miss the playoffs?)

I don't care how the folks in the ESGV feel about a "guaranteed" CO vs. SH Southeast Division championship, the Stangs are going to have a lot to say about it before all is said and done.

And yes, I will definitely be at the game on Friday. Frankly I'm very interested to see how Glendale has turned it around. That's a great story. Has anyone seen them play and can comment on the changes? Do they still run that horrid Wing-T (sorry, NEVER been a fan of three and a cloud)? By the way, Cantwell is very large on the line this year. Not sure how good, but large.

Funny you mention SM, because I was thinking about their 3-0 record. I agree about this being the first test for SM, while Monrovia and TC have had several tests already...some passing grades, some needing more homework and a couple areas under ongoing review.

Observantcat said:

GA:

This will be San Marino's true defensive an offensive test in this pre-season. Cantwell is a team that plays totally the opposite of SM. It's defense is usually very aggressive expecially with the blitz. Its a team that believes in a potent passing attack. Last year Monrovia played them in the second round of the playoffs and looked like we going to beat them pretty convincingly, but they came out in the second half and game us all they had and acutually tied the game at 21 apiece with 40 sec. in the game...Williams pulled some game time heorics and we pulled the game out by 7. For TC and Monrovia, I think that measuring out the SM games from this point on will help set up a game plan when the league begins...although we have you guys in week 1.

Regarding the refereee topic....I heard talk this concern ( getting the best refs possible ) has traveled way up the food chain...too many voices calling out week after week and I guess the powers that be are finally doing some listening. It is not like this has not been said before.

But take a guess what one of the first solutions might be??

Being pushed could be the idea of expanding the number of games played Thursday night. Obviously this would put some of the good crews on the availability board.

It is another topic (full blown) like you say...maybe Miquel can find a source in the know. I've been on both sides with this one, umpiring and reffing back in the day...and the refs themselves always knew the weak spots in their crew, actually hoping no crucial or rule book calls would fall in that guys direction...thus the whole crew would take the heat for his blown call. Just like players, some refs lack confidence, freeze up, get scared and lose track of the "keys" which should trigger a "pull the flag" response. Others are damn good, note the head in front, and keep the hanky in their pocket on the clip call, for example. Not always that simple, but sometimes it is.

Miquel- is there any truth to the Thurs night push or no? If so, is ref quality the driving force or other reasons???

I was at the Monrovia/Beckman game. Cushman shot out like a lightning bolt. He definitely made a case for himself for more carries. Monrovia looked good for the most part. D-line and linebackers looked solid. The cornerbacks are a little suspect. Beckman receivers dropped a couple that should have been touchdowns. O-line needs the most work. Seemed like there was always at least one defender getting thru the line and putting pressure on the QB. And wow!! Where did this kid Nick Bueno come from?! He was amazing! On 3rd down and 18, he avoided a minus 20 yard sack by escaping from not one, not two, but four Beckman defenders and still manage to hit a receiver down field for a 37 yard touchdown pass. Later in the 2nd half, he jukes two Beckman linebackers and one safety to gain 20 yards on a bootleg. If he had better protection from the O-line this kid will really be dangerous. I can't believe he's just a sophomore. You can put me down as a Bueno Fan as well. Monrovia needs to clean up all the penalties, almost a hundred yards worth. At one point it was 3rd down and 40, all from penalties. Let's hope they fix that. Overall I was really proud of the way the boys played. Keep it up Monrovia.

It looks like Monrovia is digging deeper into its well of talent. Anyone at the game check out #24? (Cushman) he may have put himself up for a starting position this season as the back-up running back. His 78 yard burst looked like Maruquise Willams coming out of the backfield. And your right GA about this Nick Bueno kid...if there were ever a kid who plays with heart like this kid does then your'e on to something good in the future. I like his desire to stay in the game til the end. His stats are remarkable for a guy of his size and weight. Being that he is a Sophmore is even more amazing, I'm becoming a true Bueno Fan. Although Beckman has played a bunch of softies they themselves have been averaging around 40pts per game. This Defense is becoming the Maddox project. The LaSalle game should be a good measure of Monrovias defense. I think the Offense is going to get more exposive as the weeks pass.

The La Canada kids play hard. There is no doubt about that. I question if Alhambra is a playoff team or if they are how well they will do. They can not run the ball. LaCanada seemed to turn the corner last night. Alhambra has a big offensive line and the spartans had seven sacks. Back up qb Rocky Moore played exceptional in place of "Tha Duke". I had a problem with all the shifting. It fooled no one and caused the Spartans three or four delay of game calls.
I believe that the Spartans are playing hard and lost to a Playoff team this year ( yea, the Moors will make the playoffs again this year). If the Spartans opponent is as poor as you say they are, the Lc wins big next week. Just play Defense like you did last night.

Goldenarm said:

As far as officiating, there were 2 calls, one horrendous, one unusual, that hurt TC. But in the grand scheme of the things, San Gabriel played just enough better to win the game, and deserved to win the game.
If you don't think it hurts to say that - you don't know SH%$352.

TC stalled in the red zone early in the game after moving the ball well, coming away with nothing after shunning the 3 pt opportunity. The offense is still in search of consistency, and they got closer to it last night. Hatch was outstanding. in my opinion far better than the Arroyo game. We had s sure touchdown dropped, one called back...but on the positive side, we also had a couple circus catches made.

Besides the horrendous P.I. call against TC, one turning point was a brilliant and well executed onsides kick by SG. A very aggressive call in a close game, hats off to the SG staff.
The unusual play as I believe it was explained (somebody correct me if I am wrong)was an inadvertent whistle being blown in the SG stands which supposedly made some SG players stop. This happened amid a great sack by TC, where a fumble ensued, and additional yds were lost. The PA was tough to hear on the visitor side, but the SG fans were asked to pocket their whistles.....STRANGE.
We missed a 37 yd field goal. and could not reach the SG endzone on kickoffs, not even with 15 extra penalty yds as a bonus. SG had return chances all night and made good on one. TC had one return chance only...SG's kicker put everything in the end zone...last night I learned to hate the runback rule, but if you have a big-footed kid, this rule is your friend.

It was pretty good football last night, but sometimes being the 12th man sucks. To all you TC "fans" from last night I heard whining about the coaches, whispering about the kids,,,GET OFF YOUR ASSES and support the team.

Gabrielino (even with Annie Kim) would have been hard pressed to score 10 points per game against last year's FSHA team. If we had an honorable mention team, Kim would've been on it.

San Marino did NOT beat Arroyo 34-0 this year. They didn't play Arroyo, TC did. "Rufus" Williams is NOT the backup RB at Monrovia.
They have doen their job, but San Marino has not played anybody yet.
Not sure six penalties in a entire game deserves a Yikes.
If you're looking for rosters, any 'ol sap can get them from numerous places online.
Just to name a few things that bug.

I mean. Come on.

from what i hear the Bishop Amat starting QB lives in Temple City, is this true??? And if it is how do they let this kid slip away?

hey anonymous, you can't blame a game on the refs, yes most of the time they make wrong calls or no calls, but hey, if you were suppose to win it in the beginning then it should have happened whether or not the refs made the calls. just my 2 cents. as much as i dislike the refs calling in football games, isnt the best way to win a football game is to persevere the refs and just play football? hehh...

Wow the SG-TC game was so close but i think the the REFS did a horrible job..some calls were BS..LOL.....

Definitely listen to Galetti....that PHS game is next week and it only took Galetti a whole year to figure out that there are other positions on a volleyball team besides outside hitter and setter.

Miguel, just because you covered one team last week shouldn't keep you from covering that game tonight. I'd pick Pasadena against a very good Burbank team (great game last year) and any other game before San Marino-Hoover. San Marino-San Gabriel next week will be a much better game to cover. Glad I don't have to make those tough calls anymore. :)

Hey Miguel,

The most interesting game will be SM-SG in week 5. After SG wins tonight, they most likely will play a 4-0 San Marino squad. Same situation like last year. San Marino came into Matador Stadium 4-0 and came out 4-1.

Apologies to all those at SM and Hoover, especially the athletes and coaches who work TREMENDOUSLY hard day-in and day-out, but.............this must be a slooooooooooooooooooow week if this contest is the GOTW.

Btw, Benny Hung, go CRAZY tonight....I would LOVE to see you on the cover just once more. Like I said yesterday, your mug on the cover the other day inspired more kids in the WSGV then you'll ever imagine. Good luck young man!

Renovations were postponed until after the final home game of the season. All SG home games at SG High, NOT Keppel.

it is at SG - New Ave, if you have not been there before, get there early - traffic can be funky through the weird entrance. I have not seen the new field and seating, no clue there

anybody have any info. on the TC-SG game on where its going to be held at? I heard SG's football field had some renovations being done...any info would help thanks...

Miquel,

Wright is also a good passing QB, though SM might lay low on the passing game tonight and just pound the ground. You will like Titan stadium if u have not been there.

I'm hoping we can get serious penetration on Valdez tonight and keep away the big play. We can't go TD for TD with scoring teams, that is for sure. We keep it under 21...TC gets a win tonight

Miguel Melendez said:

In all honesty, San Gabriel-TC is THE game...but I just covered TC last week and I'm planning on covering them next week against Rosemead. That game will be the "Game of the Week" and also the "Video Highlight Game of the Week." The only reason I picked SM tonight was because I want to see Dooley-Hung in action.

I'm surprised Hoover would be included in any "game of the week", but they are WEAK.
