...Star Picks... Let the pickings begin!

| | Comments (29) |

Programming note: The football tab will run on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Hope you all enjoy it!

Star-News preps writer Keith Lair and I will be going head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the "Star Picks" thread. This will be the first time Lair and I go head-to-head so we'll come up with a bet for the loser to pay at the end of the season. Lunch perhaps? Any thoughts on what Lair should pay at the end of the season?

Here are this week's predictions.

(Week 0) Friday, Sept. 5

Monrovia at Arcadia, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Monrovia); Lair (Arcadia)

Muir vs. Diamond Ranch at Ganesha High, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (D-Ranch); Lair (Diamond Ranch)

Pasadena vs. Arroyo Valley at PCC, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Pasadena); Lair (Pasadena)

Ayala at Duarte, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Ayala); Lair (Ayala)

Gabrielino at La Puente, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (La Puente); Lair (La Puente)

Cathedral vs. San Gabriel at St. Matthias, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (San Gabriel); Lair (San Gabriel)

Pomona at Keppel, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Keppel); Lair (Pomona)

Maranatha at Linfield Christian, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Maranatha); Lair (Maranatha)

Bosco Tech at Contreras, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Bosco Tech); Lair (Contreras)

Saturday, Sept. 6

La Salle vs. Villlage Christian/Sun Valley at Kennedy/Granada Hills, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (La Salle); Lair (Village Christian)

Miguel's Thoughts: The most intriguing match here has to be Muir-Diamond Ranch. I don't think this will be a high-scoring game but I do see the Panthers coming away with a 24-21 victory. I will be covering Arcadia-Monrovia. What a way to start the season: a Todd Golper-Marquise Williams clash down the middle! Maranatha and Linfield Christian both are ranked in its division so that'll be an interesting matchup. So here are my thoughts, what are yours? Don't be shy and have your say. What are your predctions?

Darn it!!!
San Gabriel covered the -38 points...Cathedral 38 SG 14!
That kid Carrol whos going 2 USC was horrible what a waste of a scholarship! Anybody who was at the game knows what i'm talking about.SG's lil 5'0 ft tailback
was tougher than him.The best way to describe him is,"FAST 4 NOTHING"! Cathedral was way over-rated,and im sorry 2 say Mat fans,I would be totally surprised if you even come in 3rd place this year...it will be a long season for SG!!! just keeping it real

Just for fun, you may want to compare your predictions against Cal Preps - list them on the "star picks" also - see if you can beat the computer!!!

To all the Stang Fans,

Ican be 100% with yawl, if yawl got a mid range passing game to go along with a decent running game, then you got a legitimate chance at the winning the division championship. Now, I don't think you guys will have a mid range passing game your more like a home run style offence. I really believe your running game will be spotty at best. Maybe "Bingo" could come close to a thousand and I mean maybe!!!!!

I suspect Arcadia will be a decent running team with little capabilities to pass, playing sound football. I really think the league will be up for grabs with Burroughs having the inside track on everybody, but I like our chances big time!

REYES said:

Pasadena’s O-line will be one of the best in the new division. PHS BULLDOG O-LINE OF JONES,BOYKINS,CONNELL,HAMILTON(HOUSE OF PANCAKE) WILL WEAR DOWN ARROYO VALLEY OF SAN BERARDINO DEFENSE.IT WILL BE BOYKINS(PHS) VS BOYKINS(AV) GOING HEAD TO HEAD!!! BUT BOYKINS FROM PASADENA WILL WIN THIS MATCH-UP HAND DOWN!!! PHS BULLDOG NATION WIN,WIN THIS YEAR!!!

Stang fan & the rest of the “SGV”

Once “PHS” gets through this early injury bug, I believe they will be a huge factor come league play and playoff play. Stack the box if you want, but we have a boat load of athletes too! Pasadena’s O-line will be one of the best in the new division. The QB play will be crucial for the Dogs and I think sophomore Jeff Davis will eventually be the starter. Losing “Bingo” to Muir last year was huge to PHS’s program, but I really feel were on the verge of taking over the Pacific! LET’S EATUM UP DOGS!!!!!!!!

It is somewhere around 22-28 players I believe.

I was quoting an earlier bloggers comment on Arcadia's roster size. I was just as surprised as you.

stang guy said:

the cats will beat arcadia by 14points, the cats have to much speed. Arcadia has Goplher in the backfield he will have about 120 yards

Muir vs Dr: Muir offense will score ! the final score will depend on how many stops the defensive come with! DR will force the ball in to #4 hands , even thou he is coming off a serious foot injury from the summer. Question is who we step up, Muir defensive ( the offense will score) or Dr offense?
Muir by 20.

Duarte vs Ayala ; Duarte has a good coachiing staff
so duarte by 7

Football said:

Goldenarm, is there really only 23 players for Arcadia?

Goldenarm said:

Friday can't get here fast enough.

Here is hoping injuries are at an all-time low this year. Good luck to all.

Goldenarm said:

I am gonna throw a 60 yarder into the endzone and pray it hits someone. Later, I will swear I was aiming at the guy who caught it.

Monrovia 10
Arcadia 7
Defensive battle, Arcadia's TD via the pass.

Diamond Ranch 28
Muir 21
DR smells fresh popcorn from LA County Fair and prevails.
Stangs don't necessarily HAVE TO WIN to impress.

PHS 14
AV 13
Dogs have their day, and a good season ahead.

Keppel - just win man.
La Salle - strong JV squad ascends to Varsity, La Salle dominates with surprising ease.

San Gab
Cathedral - Matadors in OT, 31 - 28.

TC 0
ElMo 0
Scrimmage, I know
Rams get the contact they need to open against Arroyo.
O-line gels / finds timing against the tough El Monte group.

23 guys on the Apache roster, UNREAL-makes it tough to practice. The Arcadia D line will cause problems for the Wildcats...possibly create some turnovers in the backfield, that one Arcadia kid is near unblockable and has a devastating bull rush.
I am picking DR, but hope the Stangs smoke the opening kickoff and never look back, 52 - 13. Tough one to pick with any confidence. Looking forward to the recap from Stang Fan.

The Stang Fan said:

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!

I swear this is the BEST time of year. Here go my picks:

Arcadia vs. Monrovia- I'm going with the Cats on this one. Last year I knew that Arcadia would be a pretty good team and I picked them to win all of their games except for the Muir game. This year is a much different year and I think the Cats are going to be a formidable bunch, especially in the Mid-Valley where I believe they will make it to at least the semis. It would be better for Muir if Arcadia wins, but I don't see it happening.

phs vs. Arroyo Vallley- I don't know much about Arroyo Valley, but I do know that phs has absolutely NO passing game. With that said, AV should stack the box (like all teams will do vs the dawgs this year) and stuff the run and come out with a "W."

Ayala vs. Duarte- Ayala handled the Falcons last year when DHS had a pretty good team. I don't see much changing this year.

Gabrielino vs. LP- LP should win this one by two scores.

Cathedral vs. SG- Cathedral has more playmakers than SG and it will show on Friday. Although I am rooting for the Matadors.

Pomona vs. Keppel- If this game is played in the woods and no one is there to see it..........well, you get my drift. Uhhhhhhh....Keppel I guess.

Maranatha vs. Linfield- Maranatha wins.

LaSalle vs. VC- Lancers win.

Muir vs DR- I know I should come on here and say Muir will win by 20 because all of the crap I kicked off over on the Trib blog...but the truth is this game can go either way. It could be tight. It could be a blowout by either team. It could be a defensive struggle, or an offensive shootout. I am really going back and forth on this one. The Stangs definitely have the skill guys (as always) and three starters on the o-line returning. But they'll need the depth in the trenches and I'm not sure they have that just yet. Ah screw it....Stangs by 7!!!

LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

big a,

I believe arcadia has 22 or 23 kids on the roster this season. I can't say who well win friday. of course I want arcadia, but its a toss up. I think monrovia has the edge in the skilled positions. if arcadia wants to win they have to keep the ball out of monrovias hands. williams is a threat everytime he touches the ball.

BigA said:

Monrovia at Arcadia - Toss up. I can't choose here.

Muir vs. Diamond Ranch - Muir

Pasadena vs. Arroyo Valley at PCC, 7 p.m. - Arroyo Valley

Ayala at Duarte, 7 p.m. -- Ayala

Gabrielino at La Puente, 7 p.m. -- La puente

Cathedral vs. San Gabriel - Cathedral

Pomona at Keppel, 7 p.m. -- Pomona

Maranatha at Linfield Christian - Maranatha

Bosco Tech at Contreras, 7 p.m. -- ???

My take on the Monrovia-Arcadia Matchup. Not just because I am a Wilcat Alum but Because I am a football Fan. I think that Monrovia might just jell this year and become a complete team with a solid D and A great running offense. I find it hard to see an overwhelming running game from the Apache's. If Defense wins games and offense is the insurance than I will put my money on Monrovia simply for that matter. I remember last year when the Wildcats had injuries after the Duarte game that factored into last years game, this should be a very intersting matchup for a game 1. Marquise Williams is definatly a much stronger running back and a much more confident player since his three year stint on the varsity level. He could be the most valueable Impact player in the area.

New York said:

Big A,
It only takes 11 to be on the field. Nonetheless, you may want to recruit a handful of those band members to hold some bags during practice. Over 3,000 students and only 30 players. What has the world come to?

FanIntheStand said:

Well BigA you are right about one thing it will be a human chess game. I hope Monrovia's new coach and staff make the right plays!

BigA said:

I think this Monrovia - Arcadia match up is going to be decided between what team can give these guys the most support. Golper can only do so much and with less than 30 kids on the varsity, how much support can you expect him to get?

If Arcadia plays solid D and keeps Monrovia's offense off the field...Arcadia. But if Williams gets room to run and they wear down Golper in the backfield, the game goes to Monrovia.

This could be a great human chess match kind of game for the coaches.

Miguel Melendez said:

That's right, I'll get La Salle's game up there, too. I never should have doubted you, goteamgo.

As far as the Blair-Bishop Montgomery game goes that's just a scrimmage, NOT a game. Blair starts next week at West Covina.

Gridiron Princess said:

Wow! I really think Monrovia has this one hands down. As for that Todd G v. Marquise W . my vote is Marquise ...We will definitely see a different player than last year! Bring It On!

goteamgo said:

Believe me, it is La Salle vs Village Christian at 7PM on 9/6 at Kennedy High School in Granada Hills.

Miguel Melendez said:

Blair vs. Bishop Montgomery is only a scrimmage, not an actual game.

I'm verifying with La Salle about its game against Village Christian.

Anon said:

There's also a Blair game listed on Max Preps for Saturday, Sept 6th against Bishop Montgomery at 1:00.

Don't forget the Saturday game - La Salle vs. Village Christian.

I am sure Maranatha's film crew will be out in mass preparing for the following week's game.
