....Star Picks....All football, all the time (updated)

Star-News preps writer Keith Lair and I will be going head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the "Star Picks" thread.
Melendez: Last week: 11-5; Overall: 37-20
Lair: Last week: 12-4; Overall: 40-17
Sorry it took a while to put up this first post. Everything technical-related is down in Pasadena, which means I'm relegated to work from the Tribune office in West Covina where I'm forced to listen to how much Bishop Amat fans cry about not being ranked No. 1 for a whole week. Ugh.
Anyway, here are this week's games with predictions. Note there are no Thursday games.
There are some pretty games this week. I'm still deciding on which game to go. My top two in no particular order is Rosemead at Temple City and Monrovia at La Salle. San Marino should get a pretty good test when they play host to Cantwell; Hoover was way too easy last week. Both the Panthers and Rams are coming off losses while the Lancers and Wildcats are coming off victories. I wonder if the Rams D will be able to stop Tra Sumlar, one of the best running backs in the area. Sumlar didn't play last week against Harvard-Westlake so that Rosemead team was not the same Panthers team you got used to seeing the first few games.
Lair and I have almost identical picks with the exception of the SM-Cantwell and Marshall-Godinez games. He picked Cantwell and Godinez while I picked SM and Marshall. Godinez, if you don't know, is a new high school in the heart of Santa Ana. This is their first year of varsity competition.
Friday's Games
Rosemead at Temple City, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Rosemead); Lair (Rosemead)
Monrovia at La Salle, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Monrovia); Lair (Monrovia)

Muir at Glendale, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Muir); Lair (Muir)
Alhambra at South Pasadena, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Alhambra); Lair (Alhambra)
Burbank vs. Pasadena at PCC, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Burbank); Lair (Burbank)
Hoover at Arcadia, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Arcadia); Lair (Arcadia)

Blair at Brawley (San Diego), 7 p.m. --Melendez (Brawley); Lair (Brawley)
Saturday's Game
Pasadena Poly at Brentwood, 3 p.m. -- Melendez (Brentwood); Lair (Brentwood)

An idea I had last season was for a change in the points awarded.

Quit being a coward! It's okay to express your self on this here blog!!!! Man, what's funny? I know and see a lot of you people, to think the "Haterade" is being drank by many in "Dena"!!!!! GO RAIDERS!!!!! Oh, I ment to say, GO BULLDOGS!!!!!
i agree with charlie paredes who said:
hey melendez.Whats up on hating.your suppose run a legit newspaper. Why r u hating on L.A.Cathedral do u even go high school football games!u r talkn about Cantwell, La salle, Monrovia,Bosco Tech.Give me a frkn break kiddd. The only team thats good out there is St.Francis.Cathedral is down the fwy from Pasadena with a new football field and u can't even rank them... Too bad u r not a real editor.U r a fraud.
U R A FRAUD! you're talking about teams and what you call talent like you really go to the games and check them out. you wouldn't know real talent if it bit you on the butt (which is where your head is located).
first off i would like to say , umm burbank what the heck are you doing in this blog conversation ??? whens the last time you guys won anything?.
though i do say you are gona whoop on phs, that isnt saying much and hey huckster if you guys lose i think you should remove your self from this website for good.
IMMEDIATELY BUDDY!!!
Stang Fan-
Outstanding picks.
Why is Blair going all the way to Brawley? All that expense for what? El Centro or Calipatria didn't have an opening? CIF wouldn't give permission to play in Yuma?
Reyes & Others!
My Bro is limited when it comes to coaching, so I don't want to talk about that! But I was hoping PHS can start playing some good football, so I can really be part of the blog. I am starting to get offended when people attack my bro on other things beside football. I'm keeping everything football and will try to be tasteful when doing it! Please, people don’t bring out the bad in me!!!!! Please, don’t make me yearn for the dark side force!!!! Please, I’m begging you!!!!!!
My bad...those are my predictions below.
THIS WEEK'S PICKS:
Rosemead at Temple City-- ROSEMEAD
Monrovia at La Salle--MONROVIA
Cantwell Sacred Heart at San Marino-- SM
Muir at Glendale-- MUIR
Alhambra at South Pasadena--ALHAMBRA
Burbank vs. Pasadena-- BURBANK
Hoover at Arcadia-- ARCADIA
Mojave at Maranatha-- MARANATHA
Duarte at Sierra Vista-- DUARTE
St. Francis at Rio Mesa-- SF
Firebaugh at La Canada-- LC
Godinez vs. Marshall-- GODINEZ
Blair at Brawley-- BRAWLEY
justafan,
Well if we do lose to Glendale I deserve to be more than "drilled." Blast away bro! I don't see it happening though.
As far as Alhambra and SG, well to be honest I don't view them as really good programs. Are they decent teams? Sure. But remember, when CIF decided to put together a new Southeast division, the Almont coaches and admins were the only ones from the 5 leagues protesting the move because they knew what would happen to them in the playoffs. Again, pretty good local programs but IMO very "beatable teams."
Golderarm,
Monrovia/SM for the RHL title???? I have to say what tends to happen every season, everybody looks at San Marino's record and they hop on the band wagon and people say they'll battle with monrovia for the league title, and every year San Marino disappoints because they either finish 3rd or 4th. Temple City's record isnt looking pretty but rest assure it will all depend on the first game Monrovia-Temple City that will be the factor on who wins the league title
Huckster- There is one huge difference between the Bulldog schools. PHS is far superior in terms of fan support. Remember when Burbank pulled off the huge upset of PHS in basketball and there were only about 20 Burbank supporters there-I'd be surprised if there are 40 fans at PCC Friday. (including cheer and band)Burroughs travels much better.
Y'all know that I have to get Huckster all fired up for this Friday night. It's no fun when Huckster is depressed.
By the way Huckster...Burbank is undefeated at night so far this season.
Whatever the end result, the battle of the Bulldogs will be a thriller. Burbank can give anyone a heart attack on each and every play-in a good way or in a bad way.
MHS informant-
Whats the situation with K. Boggs? Ankle? Will he be ready come Friday or are they holding him out for a week just to be sure? They need him or else its up to Bueno and M.W.
Huckster,
Let see if brother(Mills)found any answer to PHS offense and any heart PHS defense to stop the run!!
Realhsfbfan,
I don’t really like burgers, but we could do a Pastrami sandwich.
Stang fan,
What up Bro? I agree with you about almost everything your saying and the Dogs will need to establish a go to guy. I think those guy will be Hamilton and La Flore, which both of these guys started last year and have been hurt for the start of the season. The Dogs will beat 1 out of the 3 you mentioned or maybe 2 out of the 3! I want to say so much more, but got to go to work! I do have a job......Might be shocking to some!!!!
Yo Stangfan,
Beatable schools? any teams beatable buddy...
I just hope yo Stangs don't take the Nitros lightly like we did.Skill wise there's no comparison of coarse, but i'll tell you what them new coaches they got ain't no joke...So if I was in Vegas I put my money on the Stangs, but if you guys get upset after all the smack you talked,I'm a drill you right back homeboy!LOL
Injury Report
Anthony Corralles DT/OUT
Kendall Boggs WR/DB Q
Darwin Winfrey DT/Q
Bobby Michels DB/P
Joe Vasquez LB/FB P
Cats roll big this Friday! Any news on the injured Cats? Will they be playing at full strength?
If we don't earn any respect Friday, it could go downhill.
We need a supreme effort from our down lineman and backers - to prevent the secondary from becoming our first line of tacklers. This means JS and MO need to step up and make some hits, solid hits, and get backfield penetration.
Here goes - onto the limb
It is going to be our best game thus far this season.
GA,
You might be right about TC, hell they've pulled out some games vs. Monrovia in the past that surprised a lot of people, so you just never know. I'm just struggling to deal with the fact that they lost to Alhambra and SG. I know they were both last minute victories, and I know people might think highly of those two schools but IMO those are VERY beatable schools who I thought TC would have beaten by a TD or two. Nonetheless, good luck to the Rams this year, I hope you guys do give it a good run in the RHL.
burbanksports,
I see you keep "subtly" mentioning your passing game and your pass defense, you must be excited about some of the skill guys you have this year. I'm REALLY interested to see how this week's game vs. phs is going to go. The irony here is that phs now runs more than passes and, according to your hints, it's vice versa for Burbank. Please come back with a full report of the game Saturday morning...many folks will be interested.
realhsfbfan,
Burroughs in the upset, huh? Okay, to each his own, right? However, I think CV has more of a chance than ANY team in the Pacific right now. I'v talked to a couple people who were at both the CV/SF and Burroughs/SF and they were thoroughly convinced that CV was better than Burroughs. Of course Burroughs played without their best player but I heard some really good things about the Falcons. If they're anything close to their old selves from the 90's that will be GREAT for the Pacific.
O-Cat,
To say that Arcadia is in the "basement" of the Pacific league is an astounding statement. I just thought that they'd miss the playoffs, I'm not so sure about a visit to the cellar. I have yet to see them play though, and you have seen them firsthand, so you have a better read on them....but DAMN I can't imagine Arcadia ever being in the basement. Middle of the road? Yes. Basement? Not quite sure. What IS for sure though is that we will soon find out.
Huckster,
What's good bro! Look, if ANY team is hard to read right now it's the dogs. Who do they have, who's injured, who are the go-to guys, what offense are they really running, etc, etc, etc. This team is chalk-full of unanswered questions. Truth be told this team can finish anywhere from 4th-7th. They are not going to beat CV, Burroughs, and Muir, but they MIGHT have a chance against the other teams because it isn't too clear and how good they are yet. burbanksports is fired up about the game this week and I'm sure he's confident they will beat you guys. Let's see what you guys bring to the table this week.
Stang Fan,
I know it is looking like a Monrovia / SM battle in the RHL. While I would love to see it, I am not banking on TC upsetting the Mead and rocking the home field with a victory this Friday.. Like us , I fully expect Rosemead to get better every game. A win for us would require some kids to really elevate their play right now. It would require offensive production above what we have shown thus far.
However, it is my gut feeling TC will contend for the RHL title. We have an opener and homecoming this year that will be games of meaning, games where our kids will rise up. The opener is on Wildcat ground and you know their house is gonna be rockin and ready.
Rettig carried the ball 11 times for 187 yards. maxpreps
Rettig carried the ball 11 times for 187 yards.
Hal- I am hoping that Huckster saw your post and that PHS believes that Burbank will run on every down. Not very likely, but if that's what people believe-great.
Huckster- put 9 in the box and be sure that your offense throws the ball.
I usually praise teams that beat us (Monrovia) and hope they go undefeated because it looks better losing to a strong team than to a weak team. However, the Monrovia-Arcadia game four weeks ago featured two teams that did not look good. Both teams showed glimpses of good stuff, but Monrovia really gave a lot of points away with unforced errors and poor special teams play. Frankly, I was not impressed with Arcadia's Offensive play calling either. Their kids played hard and with a lot of heart, though. Does Coach Dimalante focus primarily on Defense? Taking Golper away and having other guys banged up must really devastate Arcadia overall. I'm surprised Golper has not told his doctor to cut his damn toe off so he can get back out there!
Huck,
Oh by the way, you said "money". I am broke as a joke, but I'll put a TOPS burger on it. Are you willing enough to spot me points if you think PHS has it in the bag?
Huck,
On the real though, i wish you bulldogs the best in league. Yes, I agree it's put up or shut up time. Lets put all jokes & big talk aside and enjoy the ride.
Why doesn't PHS have a home field? It's tough to play every game on the road.
Real hsfbfan, the Dogs did have negative yardage and that’s no excuse for that poor performance! However, PHS won’t have negative yardage against the Apaches! Long Beach Jordan would have beaten Arcadia by 7 touchdowns! CV, Burroughs, Burbank and Muir are the top teams to start league and that’s no particular order. PHS had 7 players out due to injuries and we’ll see what effects they’ll bring to the table this Friday. I like our chances in the Pacific, but it’s put up or shut up time! No, need to do any big talking it’s for the money now!!!!! GO RED & WHITE BULLDOGS!!!!!!
Stangfan;
If you saw what I saw the Arcadia/Monrovia game you would probably put them at #8, Granted they won, but the game was so full of blunders by both teams that they didn't even need a referee. With or without Todd Golper all of the teams in the Pacific league would give this Arcadia team a real run for its money. They are lacking alot more than just Speed, Their QB is an easy target and gets flusterd on almost every play. If I had to bet my money they wouldn't beat Monrovia more than once in ten times if they played again this year. I predict PHS & Glendale to win over Arcadia. I dont hate Arcadia It is What It Is....I hope they do prove me wrong but for now,,,,,Pacific league (Hoover-Arcadia) are in the Basement.
If Arcadia is # 7 in the Pacific League ,that would mean Monrovia would be at the bottom if they played in it. What a stupid observation by Observantmeow.
Even with Arcadia a shell of its former self, I can't see them losing to Hoover. A Hoover win would send shock waves through the league.
During their week off I hope Pasadena's Bulldogs studied how to stop the "double wing T" Bulldogs from Burbank. Burbank will run on every down. PHS will know what's coming, will they be able to stop it?
Playoff implications already in league week #1 for CV and Burroughs. In the summer I figured the Indians would finish the league in second place. Now I'm feeling the Falcons a lot more. This one could go either way.
Glendale and Muir. Nick Montana (Joe's son) from Oaks Christian was quoted in the Times. He praised the Muir defense for its speed. That's pretty high praise I would say. The Nitros have not seen a team with the speed of Muir. They have not seen a team defense that swarms to the ball like Muir.
I love the underdog. I hope GHS makes a game of it.
sorry guys, i swear i press submit once.
Arcadia when healthy, isnt that bad guys. They got monrovia when healthy so it just matter time. However, I believe they lost two starters with season ending knee injuries and have a number of kids limping around.
Pacific league break down.
1. Burroughs-My upset against muir
2. Muir
3. CV
4. Burbank
5. Arcadia
6. Glendale
7. Pasadena
8. Hoover
Huck, you saw the lynwood game. I was there too. Look, considering the current state of the apache team, they didn't do all that bad. I mean pasadena had negative yardage in their last game. Now thats bad. And, at the very least, they arcadia scored.
I hope arcadia proves me wrong.

O-Cat,
Damn bro...tell us how you really feel about the Apaches. #7? That's pretty harsh, no?
Stang Fan,
My league was meant to achieve competitive equity while maintaining an all-Pasadena league. Hence, Muir was excluded.
Stangfan:
I would simply put Arcadia in PHS #7 spot and there you have your 2008 Pacific results.
Huckster...good to have you back. It wouldn't be any fun this week without you.
Stang Fan...you might be right about league records in the Pacific. The team that could shake things up is CV. The teams are not as deep this year, so every week could be an adventure. (Arcadia) Remember two years ago and the Muir v Burbank and the Muir v Burroughs contests? If I recall it was injuries on Muir that leveled the playing field.
Oh! I almost for got, but I went to the Arcadia game in Lynwood and the Apaches are absolutely terrible!!!!! They are on the same level as “Hoover”! We’ve been banged up too, but that doesn’t account for nothing with you fellow bloggers! Now that La Flore and Hamilton or back in the line up with some other shifty youngster we will be something to deal with! But the Arcadia 12 year streak will defiantly end this year! The Dogs will have something to say about the Pacific league championship!
Btw, I'd like to see how other bloggers think the Pacific League will shake out this year. Any takers?
Burbanksports,
The Bulldog Red will be ready to get that first victory! We on it Bro, the week off gave our youngsters some time to look into the future and know we can get the Pacific league title! I know the Bulldog Blue has beaten on some “TrashCans”! I am looking forward to a Dog fight!
NY,
City of Roses league? Interesting. I notice the Stangs aren't in there, any particular reason? Other than that they would win that league 49 times out of 50.
Actually, Maranatha is about to rise from the ranks of REALLY small private school to a school ready to move up the ranks. They might need to move out of their league and division in the next few years.
Philly B,
I'm not trying to simply hate on the Apaches...really I'm not. Right now I just think that those other teams are better than they are. I was right about Arcadia last year, let's see what happens this year.
Anonymous,
"Rub it on his foot to heal faster?" That's awesome! And funny as hell!!!
burbanksports,
You might be right, but at full force I think Burroughs will beat BHS. Like I mentioned before, we may just have one of those crazy seasons where we have a few teams with the same amount of league wins and losses.
Hal Lam,
HILARIOUS line about Hoover and phs!!!
I think the only team that can beat Muir in league is Muir. If they are focused and come to play, they just have (no pun intended) too many horses.
A healthy Arcadia makes the playoffs. But from what I'm hearing, they are pretty banged up.
Burbank over Burroughs... I can see that.
Based on their St. Francis effort, Crescenta Valley will move up the food chain.
Glendale is improved, but will that turn into wins?
Hoover is Hoover and that's good news for Pasadena High.
Dena Dog- be sure to wear the royal blue and white this week.
Stang Fan- One change to your prognostication- Burbank will beat Burroughs this year.
Where is Huckster? Don't tell me that he's laying low and PHS has some new wrinkles to surprise this Friday night. I hope that PHS throws as much as possible Friday night. Trick plays or not...just throw the ball.
Observer,
Glendale is undefeated but wins against S. pas and Alhambra is not enough I think to be the game of the week. But alhambra is a good team but glendale is in a more competitve league then the almont league. Rosemead/temple city should be the game of the week. Rosemead is looking real good and temple city always has a good squad around this time of the season.
Stang Fan,
Your not even giving Arcadia a playoff berth???? Wheres the love lol. I know burbank and burroughs have strong teams, but ur not giving the apaches a chance for an upset against either teams because I think we both know that they will not upset Muir.
Arcadia Players-
Someone please post the Muir guy's prediction you won't make the playoffs on the bulletin board. And do what you have to do to get Golper healthy. Show him that prediction and have him rub it on his foot to make it heal faster.
Stang Fan,
How about this for league realignment?
City of Roses League:
Blair
La Salle
Maranatha
Marshall
PHS
Pasadena Poly
Philly B,
What's good bro! I see the Cats beating La Salle, although it should be a good game. As for the RHL you guys are probably the favorite, but I wouldn't be surprised to see SM pull it out either. It appears that the RHL title will be decided when the two schools meet. It may even resemble last year when each team had a league loss or more.
You are right about the title going through 1905 N. Lincoln, but I'm going to go one step farther about the Apaches....they won't make the playoffs.
Wait, wait, wait Apache fans. Before you crucify my name and label me an Apache-hater, remember I was one of the few people on this blog last year who early on said you guys would be a great team and beat SF. I call'em like I see'em. I just think that the Apaches will finish 5th this year, in a wild and more competitive race. Here is my early league prediction:
1. Muir
2. CV
3. Burroughs
4. Burbank
5. Arcadia
6. Glendale
7. phs
8. Hoover
Of course I've been wrong before and things could become even more interesting if the middle teams start beating each other similar to the RHL last year. That would make this year an exciting and crazy one.
How is Muir @ Glendale not the game of the week? Muir is as good, if not better than St. Francis, and Glendale is undefeated, running over S. Pass and Alhambra. What else do you need to know?
Philly B,
Nice to see you are back. You could be right about arcadia.
Its time for monrovia to show that they're the favorite to win league out right. If they can take care of business against La Salle I dont see why they cant win the title.
Arcadia has been getting alot of attention in the pacific league, but people should know that Arcadia has to go through Muir to win the title. And Muir has had the apaches number for the last couple of seasons. And I dont see that changing with Arcadias key players out with injuries
Ready? OKAY!
"LET"S GO BULLDOGS!! clap,clap,clap,clap,clap.
Burbank Bulldogs, clap,clap,clap,clap,clap.
Repeat several times (i.e. about 100)........
We should say “Games (plural) of the Week?” My thoughts:
Rosemead vs. Temple City – I understand Rosemead is a very good team. TC needs a win, as it does not get any easier for them after this (La Salle, and then Rio Hondo league). I think this game will say a lot about TC.
Cantwell vs. San Marino – A good test for SM, and for Cantwell. Cantwell moved to the Camino Real league in 2006, and has gotten stronger the last two years. They will be La Salle’s biggest test come league. SM seems to be hitting on all cylinders now, and will need it in this game. Since it is Cantwell, expect to see a lot of yellow hankies littering the field – they play aggressive, sometimes too aggressive, and sometimes lose composure.
Monrovia vs. La Salle – Both teams have new coaches, and have been adjusting over the first few games, and they now seem to have hit their stride, both coming off wins. La Salle could easily be 3-1, vs. 1-3. Since Monrovia and La Salle began scheduling each other three years ago, there have been some great games, and both teams (and fans, I believe) have mutual respect for each other. The pure athleticism of Monrovia versus the disciplined play of La Salle. La Salle used a running game against Bosco Tech – will it continue? Is Rettig due for his big game? Will Monrovia’s running attack (Williams I believe?) shred La Salle? It will be either a close game or a blow out – flip a coin.
Muir vs. Glendale – Anytime Muir (or St. Francis) plays, you have to consider them a “game of the week.”
CATHEDRAL'S THE MOST OVERRATED TEAM I'VE SEEN THIS YEAR.
AND YOU CAN KEEP THAT CARROL KID,I CAN"T BELIEVE USC OFFERED HIM A SCHOLLY.THEN AGAIN THE KID RAN 10.4 100mtr
SO I GUESS THAT"S THE ONLY REASON.HE SHOULD STICK TO TRACK HE IS NOT A FOOTBALL PLAYER.THE SG KIDS WERE TRYING TO TAKE HIS HEAD OFF AND HE WOULD JUST SLIDE LIKE A QB TO AVOID EVERY HIT......SOFT!
91030
Great blog entry and best of luck to you and the South Pas kids this season....and in particular against AHS Friday.
As I stated at least once before, their was tremendous fan support for your JV squad last season at TC. I remember it well.
Miguel:
This post will respond to SP Fan from the other string on last week's games, anyone (and everyone)who have dissed the Tigers this year, and hopefully some of the pro-SP fans out there on this blog. I have been to 2 games this year, SG and Glendale, and it is clear that the team is in a complete rebuilding mode. Both those teams dominated because SP could not stop either one on defense. The tackling was terrible. Ed Smith is starting 4 sophmores which for those who know the history of the team is unprecedented. This includes QB Connor Bednarski who appears to be a potentially standout QB in the dropback, pocket mode who will get nothing but better over the next 2 years (RHL lookout). I saw that one blogger SP Fan commented on how succesful Jr QB Howard Serrian has been when he is in the game. While I agree that he moved the offense against SG and Glendale's 2nd string when the games were out of reach, it did not appear that he could pass the ball with any success vs Bednarski's potential. Ceratinly Ed Smith should consider though alternating at times and using Serrian as the "running" QB. Additionally, most of the key players on offense and defense are Juniors who like the Sophmores have little or no starting experience at the varsity level. Thus they are all trying to improve and deal with the game at this level.
The one Senior on the team who appears to being doing anything is Steven Colliau. According to our local paper he never comes off the field playing WR, DB, returning KO's, returning punts, kicking off, punting and holding on extra points. Additionally it appears he is catching most of the teams passes. Again, according to our local paper, the quote on him by the SG Coach after the game was he "catches anything in the air". Actually I feel sorry for this young man who appears to be a very good player on a very poor team.
To me what this has shown is that the Tiger offense can play with most of the other teams in the RHL, with the normal growing pains that go with a sophmore QB playing only his 2nd year of organized ball. However right now the team's defense is absolutely horrible especially at the DL (except for Sr Mark Lee) and LB positions. If they can somehow improve in this area, especially with junior and sophmores stepping up they may be competitive during league. If they do not improve on defense though it will be very ugly very often.
It is doubtful the Tigers will win any league games based upon what I have seen but who knows. Certainly this week while they will lose to Alhambra handily, if they can improve on defense and keep improving after that a win or two in league is possible.
All I can say is that next year and the year after the Tigers are going to be much better so all teams should take their shots now.
At the TC / La Salle game last year we had 3 transports to area hospitals, at least 2 went to Arcadia Methodist.
I'm not sure how the logistics were handled.
Not that many years ago you had an ambulance at the game. The problem then became if that ambulance had to transport someone, you had to wait until another ambulance arrived to restart the game.
Matt,
first I heard about the lineman who was injured`at LC last Friday. I sure wish it was possible to have an ambulance on stand-by at all games. 15,20 minute delays in transporting...well you know what that could mean.
Good luck to the big dude and speedy recovery.
SELECTED PICKS
Glendale plays hard and impresses, but Stangs too much.
35-16.
San Marino finds holes plugged and Wright gets some heat. They lose first game. Cantwell, 21-SM 14. Cantwell heavily penalized but manages to win at SM home field.
Rams show they can play defense against a team that can put up points in a hurry. Final score not what all the critics envision. Sumlar if healthy, puts up close to 200yds. This game will have surprises, trust me. Temple City ? Rosemead ?
PHS players say enough is enough. Pasadena earns a victory and the Huck finds the podium, wakes up the PSN blog big-time.
Monrovia defense pressures. La Salle scores in the air, hitting the out patterns and deep corner throws. In the end the Wildcats D tightens up, Maddox's head glows red - Monrovia 14, La Salle 13.
Arcadia wins.
Cathedral dude,
You should be worrying about your own ethics my friend....up by 60 points last week, word is your coach brought back out the 1st string defense with 3 minutes to go, JUST TO ASSURE YOU WOULD MAINTAIN A SHUTOUT
OVER 18 million in donations, 4 million recently from the Shea Foundation....maybe you guys should be thanking someone and at least FAKING you are humbled by the generosity and good fortune afforded to you.
Instead you pummel, then purposefully choose to humiliate, the kids suiting up for a lesser opponent.
Where is the dignity and sportsmanship in that? Tell me I am wrong please...but I have this as fact from a good friend who attended the game. A total blow out win is not enough??
There are so many schools in the SGV needing facility upgrades and equipment - and you come on here and piss and moan about lack of recognition for Cathedral? Don't expect a sea of support to head your way anytime soon.
I have to agree the Mead/TC game has lost some shine, but I don't expect the Rams to get blown.
Last year around this time the Rams defense had already had 45 plus points laid on them by SG, AHS and the Mead as well. This year we have lost two games in a row in the 4th quarter, both on 4th down pass plays from the opponent. We simply cannot allow this big play, desperation ball to beat us any longer.
It sucks being 1-2, but you have to stay positive and look for improvement...and I see improvement. Like a couple teams, already several starters are banged up - others need to show some salt and step up.
WHAT! you gotta be kidding? Monrovia v. LaSalle? Come on now you know the refs are going to be callin everything under the sun on Monrovia. This is one of those games where they make the private school look good! I've said it before it's all political. Good luck with that wildcats!! I'm going to the Rosemead / TC game that's the one to watch.
Miguel if you want to see a good defense you should go to the Muir ,Glendale game you will see that defensive line will shut down Glendale's offense. I still say that this is the best Defensive line Muir has had in a while.Muir will score points on defense this week to much pressure from the Defensive lineman.Whe will you give the Muir defensive line credit for having a good unit they are due to come out on the paper please write a story regarding those players.
The game of the week is Monrovia v. LaSalle game! Cats are starting to come together plus this is the last non league game they'll have to correct their stuff! M. Williams, N. Bueno have some new things they will show in this game..In a real way!!! Go Wildcats Go!

Wow! People are actually interested in the Muir/GHS game. That's a first. It's been about 15 years since the Nitros were this "competitive." Should this be the Game of the Week? Not so sure. It'd be nice to see the Stangs and their new uniforms (90's throwback) on the cover of the PSN Sports page. I'm not quite sure Miguel will do that though because I'm not sure people are convinced about Glendale just yet.
Rosemead vs. TC lost some luster with TC having lost to Alhambra and SG. Monrovia/La Salle sounds like it'll be a good one, and SM vs. Cantwell seems intriguing. I guess I'll go with Muir vs. GHS (you knew I would) as the Game of the Week because it is the league opener and Glendale actually has a better record than Muir heading into the match-up. I'm sure ALL their fans will be out in force on Friday which should make for a great atmosphere in Glendale which hasn't been seen in along time (outside of the Loyola Cubs who play there too).
Btw Miguel, this will be the 4th week of play and your top two teams have yet to be featured as the GOTY. Well at least SF had that Thursday game vs. Burroughs. A lot of folks would love to see the Stangs on the cover sometime in the next few weeks.
LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Geeze Charlie relax, what happened the Chocolate factory shut down! Go gripe on some other blog and don't bring that crap around here. who the hell cares what jv team 'smashes' thats not worthy of coverage...grow up!
hey melendez.Whats up on hating.your suppose run a legit newspaper. Why r u hating on L.A.Cathedral do u even go high school football games!u r talkn about Cantwell, La salle, Monrovia,Bosco Tech.Give me a frkn break kiddd. The only team thats good out there is St.Francis.Cathedral is down the fwy from Pasadena with a new football field and u can't even rank them. Just wait when they smash u r poor Bosco Tech and Cantwell J.V teams. Cantwell played that against St. Paul.I was at that game and Cathedral could've smash St. Paul.Too bad u r not a real editor.U r a fraud.
The most interesting game for me is the ghs v muir game.
Muir 38 Glendale 21.....GHS goes down fighting.
Miguel Melendez,
Game of the Week should be PHS vs Burbank!!!
Why???
Mills now has two weeks to right the ship.!!
Let see if he can do you???
I still give the edge to Burbank!!!
But this is no doubt a make or break game for PHS Bulldog season!!!
Glendale will find out how good they are Friday night one way or the other. Muir is the defending champ and is the best team on their schedule.
I agree, it is good for the Pacific League when more teams can get in there and mix it up. Remember the excitement that Blair stirred up last year in the Rio Hondo League. That was fun to watch.
The Nitros aren't big and they aren't fast, but they will play hard. They won't retreat. That is a difference I have seen this season. One Alhambra blogger called Alhambra loss to GHS a fluke, but I'm not so sure it was. Glendale is slowly turning around a program that has won just 2 games total in the last 3 seasons.
I don't think Muir will be beaten in league play, but there are some tests waiting for them. If they do what they are supposed to do, these league games will not be close. If they come in big-headed, there are a few teams in league that are capable of hanging a loss on Muir.
I'll be out there watching Muir at Glendale, but Rosemead at Temple City, Monrovia at La Salle, Cantwell Sacred Heart at San Marino all look like good match ups.
BTW Muir vs. Glendale should be game of the week, just because I am Muir Alumni. Other than Monrovia vs. La Salle should be interesting!!!
StangFan,
You make an interesting point. I think the DRanch game was more of mental test that we passed exceedingly, and over course physically. I think GHS has a chip on their shoulder, because they have sucked for so long. I'll go with my Stangs obviously, but I believe GHS will give us a lil more of a challenge than expected. I for one welcome it. We need some tension in the Pac League. I hope Howard gets the boys prepared properly, and informs them GHS is out to spoil our season. There should be no Oregon St-ness going on friday!!!
Damn Trojans, still can't believe that one. Its ok, Trojans only dropped to #9 in Coaches, and #7 in Harris. That gives us more hope than Florida, and Bama. Friggin weak Pac-10 and Miguel's horrible Bruins, hurt our chances of getting up to at least #3. Oh well, maybe Cal and Oregon can be our Burroughs, CV. Gives us some type of creditibility in wins. In my worthless opinion poll, the Bruins should be kicked outta the Pac 10, and BYU or Fresno St. should be inducted.
FIGHT ON!!!! RUN TRAVELER RUN!!!
ZP,
I'm glad to see Glendale doing better. It's MUCH better for our league when all teams are playing well. With that said, there is no way in the world Glendale will even come close to an upset of the Stangs. So far GHS has defeated Alhambra (not impressive), La Canada (less impressive), and South Pas (least impressive of all).
For as happy as I am with the Stangs start the opponents they have defeated aren't great teams either. Diamond Ranch has played a HARD pre-season so it's still early to tell how good they are, and Venice (a recent City power) is simply not good this year. In their victories however, the Stangs played well with a stout D and a ton of weapons on offense, all of which should spell doom for the Nitros come Friday. If GHS happens to hang in there with Muir I would be VERY surprised, but hey it is football and you never know, right Pete Carroll and Lloyd Carr?

How effective will that Monrovia Wing-T be against that La Salle D? This should be a very well fought game...haven't seen much on the Cats this year, but how do those DB's look, cuz that Chase Rettig is due for a big game...Lancers better be ready to bring down another tough running team.
Can't wait on the TC & Rosemead game where the Conora last name has ties with the PANTHERS..yes his Dad and his Uncle played there.....
Can't wait on the TC & Rosemead game where the Conora last name has ties with the PANTHERS..yes his Dad and his Uncle played there Go Rams/Panthers...LOL...
WOW, that's totally my bad. That was supposed to be Arcadia, NOT Hoover. Take back your left huevo. I'll let you know when we start cooking up some huevo rancheros.
Miquel,
Regarding your picks....
Arcadia may be banged up, but I would bet my left huevo they can take Hoover.
Did you see El Milagro De Los Titans while in San Marino? Is Hoover holding out with 5 red-shirt high school All-Americans on their bench??
Even with Golper on the pine the Apaches should win their opener. If you know something let me know, I will retract my bet in a hurry.
