....Star Picks....That's more like it

Sorry it took so long to post a thread today. Our server in Pasadena has been down all morning and it still is. Star-News staffers migrated to West Covina for the day and I sit in Fred Robledo's desk for the day; he's golfing somewhere in Vegas/Utah right now. Must be nice.
As you know, Star-News preps writer Keith Lair and I will be going head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the "Star Picks" thread.
Melendez: Last week 11-4, Overall 14-11
Lair: Last week 12-3, Overall 17-8
My bold prediction this week? Keppel breaks its 29-game losing streak on Friday at Gabrielino. I'm just going with my gut feeling. Guess the Gabrielino hype was just that, hype. Keith's three wrong picks were Mojave (lost to Rio Hondo Prep), Alhambra (lost to Glendale) and Arroyo (lost to Temple City). My four wrong picks were Alhambra, Gabrielino, Arcadia (lost to St. Francis) and Campbell Hall (lost to Pasadena Poly).

Ok, well I don't know where Viking Supporter heard anything about Tip changing grades. He would never do that. And I don't want anybody else reading that to think someone's saying that just to try to show Coach Parks support.
Good luck to everyone this season. Hopefully all the kids will play well and avoid any serious injury.
1) Did somebody say Tip is not a teacher? Then it must be pretty darn difficult to change kids' grades, huh? If grades were manipulated, then chances are the people responsible for that are still in power to continue doing so. IF that happened. Let's be realistic, that does not happen.
2) Blair fans need to realize that last weeks game was a stretch. West Covina already had one game under their belt with a victory against El Rancho. PLUS, West Covina plays Bishop Amat tonight. If WestCo does well, then that would indicate that WestCo is a tough team.
3) The new guy has different challenges than Tip had, but he did start off with a program that has tasted a league championship. So no, he should not be alotted the free pass to lose that past Blair coaches have received.
Viking Supporter
are you crazy??? I've worked with Tip before and one thing he is not is a cheat. Don't even put that out there on him as some kind of Jealous support for this new coach. If Tip gets word from the school that one of his players is ineligible to play than he plays with the hand he is dealt with. He may not be a teacher but I know personally that he comes down hard on his players about academics. He (Tip) fully understands that alot of his players aren't enthused with school but the bear crawls and the sprints and all the other things he puts them through gets the message across to take school seriously. Where is the blame on the parent? Football is NOT year round school is. Tip gets alot of kids who would be lost in the system to compete at the highest level and when they become winners than people want to criticize for what ever little thing they can THINK up. So go ahead and keep thinking your school is going to benefit with statement like this. keep getting blown out and you won't have to worry about it because none of the kids will want to play their anymore. Think before you speak!!!!
Vikings support,
Education is and always will be the NO #1 objective that goes without saying. And come on let's be serious change grades? Please, that's illegal. Saunders does not have the authority to change anyone’s grades. If grades were changed the teachers, AD and or the principal would have to take the blame for that one. All of what you described is great and we all want the student athletes to be well rounded but what good is teaching without application? CIF rings from another school are wonderful (was Parks the head coach?) but how it translates to the new school is the difficult part. And yes your right some of the students on last year’s team had academic problems and did not graduate or barley graduated. But those are the same students who would not have come to school let alone graduate if not for football. So do we throw them away? Viking supporter I enjoyed what I saw from the student body at Blair last year and wanted to continue as I said the students deserve the best opportunity to be well rounded and feel good about their school. It doesn’t make sense to me to tear down something that is not condemned or maybe it was. At any rate losing games 56 to nothing sounds like a jagged edge but I’m just say’ in.
why are you not commenting on academics? my son is a football player and last year the and majority of senior football players did'nt even have enough credits to graduate.i heard tip changed grades so kids could play in the playoffs! whats wrong with that?it seem to me that wins and loses are far more important than the "student-athlete".parks is a teacher of the game ive watched him and his staff and all i can say is "professionalism","organized" and they all have cif rings that they brandish so the kids can see not to mention study hall. they cut into practice time so these kids can get a leg up on school work 3:15 - 4:30
practice from 4:45 - 6:30. i commend coach parks and his staff for they understand what these kids need a good education!!!!
Viking Fan with your daughter attending Blair of course you support the program that’s a no brainer, anything less would be uncivilized regardless of where you graduated from. But as New York pointed out Blair was league champs last year. They haven’t won league since what 1895? When a team goes from league champs with a swagger to not putting up a fight in their first game there is a problem. Coach Parks does not get the same chance to build as say Pickens from Marshall. Parks takes over a winning program on the rise so he didn’t have to lay a foundation he just has to maintain and add on. I know it’s only been one game and no final judgment can be made, I really hope last week was a fluke. But if Blair continues to be not so good what then? The school pride the football team showed as well as the students at Blair last year Pasadena has not seen in many years. The student body deserves the best opportunity to feel good about their school and the administration does not have the right to take that away because of personal reasoning. There are two constants in the Pasadena public schools, Muir football and PHS basketball. There is too much tradition and winning in these programs for the administration to mess with. And notice both coaches (Howard and Tucker) worked their way to the head coaching job by being a part of the staff they now head, but I’m just say’ in.
Thanks for letting me know where the game will be at for Monrovia v. Rosemead. I'm going to see what tricks they will pull to pull this one off. Alot of the peeps think Rosemead =P - they say they're RB runs strong. Has anyone seen M. Williams run? Didn't he just run for 70 yards last week? I'm sure he can do better! Well that's if the offensive line gets it right this week! They may have a good game. Off to the game...Go Wildcats!!!

Taking over a winning team is different than taking over a losing team. The new Blair and Monrovia coaches inherited programs coming off a league championship. That is a very different starting point from where the previous coaches inherited those teams. Coincidentally, Blair's program prior to Tip looked very similar to Monrovia's program prior to Garrison...dead last in the RHL.
Ok, so if it took Tip a year to build the program, give Coach Parks the same chance. I was saying that our team would be ok even back in Tip's first year. And I'm not looking at it through green and gold colored glasses. It has nothing to do with being an anlumna of Blair. I was a Bulldog. I don't even have a son playing for Blair. My daughter goes to school there and plays sports. So for me, it's a matter of supporting her school.

The Monrovia @ Rosemead game will be played at Mt. View's home field, due to the Rosemead field not ready to play.
Hey does anyone know where is the Monrovia v Rosemead game being played at? Holla back

Reyes,
Boy you on one!!!!!! LOL!!!!! It's all good!!!! Patients are a virtue!!! You need to read “Stang Fans” and the other Muir faithful blog hits and feel the pride of the “Mighty Mustangs”!!!!!! Beware of the Huckster!!!!!
I'm Just Sayin
You're right about a couple of things
1. Those guys rooting for blair have a bias. They know they're not that good as the score indicated, but just like "Hukster"with Phs all he see's is alma-mater and it blinds their good judgement.
2.The key also to being a good coach is being a good TALENT EVALUATOR. It doesn't matter how the play book looks putting players in a position to help you is one reason schools like Muir thrive. They can take a kid and exploit his atheletic strengths to help their team the best way possible. Even Arcadia gets it look who was last years quaterback a converted wide-reciever. Every coach would love to have players who could play specific positions but when you don't have that, the adjustments you make says wether you are trying to win or just putting 11 guys on the field. At PHS I know after talking to those involved in the program there are things going on that the coaching staff needs to take a hard look at themselves. They have the same group of kids who played pop warner with the Muir kids but not getting the same results. Tip understands this that's why he builds winners.
Viking Fan you are right it took Saunders to his second year to have Blair as league champs. That means it took one year to build. I’m glad to hear Saunders is helping with the program because as you know he gets the best kids to play, stay and remain eligible and that will help the program. However I think you’re looking at this team through green and gold colored glasses. What was the score last week something like 978 to nothing? Blair got rolled and taken advantage of like your drunk uncle on a Saturday night. It’s not a fluke when you get beat that bad, you have some big problems. I know you lost some seniors to graduation but you also lost players to transfers and some are on campus and won’t play. You don’t have as many problems as Marshall whose best player transferred who played QB, DB, kick returner etc... and now their QB can’t complete a pass the entire game, but you still have problems.
Since I’m not in the loop please explain to me how Muir’s star QB is a transfer from PHS? The coaches at PHS had to see the talent. A kid doesn’t go from one school to another and become very good all of a sudden. Something is not right with that picture. I’m just say’ in.
Miguel
Looks like you've got one sure pick over Lair with the Maranatha v Capistrano Valley Christian. Cap preps has Maranatha projected to win 44 to 0 and the team is still fired up over last weeks win against LS.
Tip is with JV and if he continues with JV to Var, Blair will be RHL Champs, but at this rate...
I don't thik the Vikings football players want to be "alright." Vikings play Jefferson next week, that will provide a better analysis of where the players and coaches stand; if they will be the Blair of old...
I'm just sayin' -
Tip was in his 2nd year as head coach when he coached our boys to a league championship. And he's still at Blair, just working with JV. We lost quite a few seniors so we have to rebuild, and our new coach has his own program he's trying to build. We'll be alright this season.
Has anyone noticed that the Pasadena public high school football programs that are on the slide all had Tip Saunders as coach and let him walk? Saunders had Marshall playing for a CIF title what 4 seasons ago? Marshall has not won a game the last what 25 tries and it doesn’t look good for the future. PHS had a run but 3 year after Saunders leaves it looks like PHS will get beat by everyone like the drum heads of the Muir dum, I mean drum section. It took one year to build Blair into league champs and now they look like their as soft margarine that was left out all night in the summertime. Is this a coincidence? Is Saunders that good or are the other coaches that bad? I’m just say”in.
Goldenarm-
Did Tooley play last year with the varsity squad? Is he that good or was the Gabrielino defense just that bad???
I don't know much about Rosemead, but they recently destroyed Covina. Covina may be very down, but they historically have some good athletes.
I think we will need to give Monrovia some time to continue establishing an identity and becoming cohesive. It will happen eventually.
I understand Rosemead is VERY physical. That could be the difference this year. It is tough to beleive that our team was a bunch of gym rats in the off-season during the dislocation of our program. ('IF' we had been, then the Arcadia game may have been a different story.) Anyway, Koffler seems to run a good program. I think Rosemead may be too much for us this year, but I am always optimistic with Monrovia.
As the "FanIntheStand" mentioned, we do have weapons.
NY
Thanks for the info. Should be interesting with SM as our homecoming came way, way down the road.
An early gauge of how far SM has come should be this Friday...I am sticking with La Salle but it won't be easy. Tooley (I think that was the name) had 150 plus on the ground last week for the Titans and Wright can throw. SM is going to be IN every game this year - and losses if they come will be close ones. At least that is my crystal ball.
How do you see the catfight over in Rosemead?
Another week, another list of predictions.
WEEK 2:
South Pas at Hoover
Even though SP is struggling big-time, they HAVE to have enough to beat Hoover.
Temple City at Alhambra
After getting EMBARASSED by Glendale (yes, EMBARRASSED) AHS has a lot of soul-searching to do. TC on the other hand did WELL last week. TC by a couple of TD's.
Long Beach Jordan at Pasadena
I don't know why all you phs fans are so MAD this year. These guys are young!!! They lost virtually their entire offense from last year. Oh wait...so did Muir, and the Stangs keep on winning. Nevermind dawg fans...go ahead and be angry. I want to choose the dawgs over LBJ because Jordan isn't ever strong in football, but something tells me that the phs program is kind of reeling right now from the loss of its top players last year and from two a$$-whoopings this year. Jordan wins.
Glendale at La Canada
I was thoroughly impressed with GHS's victory over Alhambra last week. LC is TERRIBLE and the Nitros should DOMINATE the line of scrimmage. The question now is, is GHS going to be good enough to crack that 4th and final playoff spot?
San Marino at La Salle
Two weeks ago I would've picked LS. After two VERY tough weeks look for them to play VERY hard. Still, I like what SM has done with their staff and I look for them to be a tough-as-nails team. SM pulls it off.
St. Francis at Crescenta Valley
SF jumped ALL OVER the Apaches last week. Look for more of the same this week.
Monrovia at Rosemead
Monrovia isn't as good as I thought they'd be, but they're headed in the right direction. I know NY isn't a fan of discussing the "what-ifs," but the reality is "if" the Cats had their top players from last year they'd be damn good. Anyhow, Rosemead looks strong...the Panthers will win.
Pomona at Duarte
DHS bounces back with a "W."
Keppel at Gabrielino
Gabby...should be plenty of parking available.
Serra at San Gabriel
SG has had a bad game, then a good game, and a pattern will be set here with another bad game. Serra wins big.
Capistrano Valley Christian at Maranatha
MHS continues to roll.
Bosco Tech vs. Gladstone at St. Matthias
BT wins.
Rio Hondo Prep at Brentwood
I've always liked RHP from afar...they'll beat Brentwood.
Marshall at Pas.Poly
C'mon...it's Marshall...who still appears to well....Marshall.
Muir vs. Venice
I can't believe that Venice is 0-2, that is very disappointing. They had been a city power for the past few years...oh well. At the begining of the year the consensus was that if Muir went 1-2, let alone 2-1, it would be considered a GOOD pre-season. Well it looks like we will have a GREAT pre-season by beating Venice and going 2-1.
LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!!
Are U for real with this Rosemead Hype! You must of went to that school is that why U have their back. Covina just sat them down! Plus M-cats have a few things to show this game!
TOO MUCH HYPE ON ROSEMEAD!! CATS HAVE A FEW WEAPONS OF THEIR OWN. JUST NOT SURE HOW TO USE THEM! BEWARE OF THE CATS...
Goldenarm,
It sounds like Tuttle just went home. Tuttle was a QB at SM when Mooney was the offensive coordinator there in 1995. I am still awaiting the return of Coach Maloney on the SM sidelines....
Miguel
Hey since you have a top 10 poll, why not come out with a bottom feeder poll. Focus in on the teams that have not lived up to expectations or aren't that good. I GUARRANTEE YOU the teams that wind up on this list, you will get more respones than the blog can take. Just think of the teams that could go on this list Phs, La Canada, Marshall, Blair, So.Pas just to name a few. Remember it's all in good fun may cost some relationships with some of the coaches but it would surely shake things up a little bit. Hey you don't believe me watch the responses I get for mentioning these schools
Reyes-
You need to stop blowing up each blog spot with your BS...go somewhere else if thats all you got pal.

Goldenarm -
It seems like just about every year a talented back emerges from the backfield of SM, who will it be this year? Can the ground game of SM go blow for blow with the aerial attack of LS? Sounds like the Titan staff is well suited to make another run at RHL title, but that LS staff is pretty solid as well, very respectable group of gentlemen on both sides of the ball.
Let me get my picks in early.

Zeke Prado (South Pas)
Friday's Games
Temple City at Alhambra, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Temple City); Lair (Temple City)

Goldenarm,
How did TC's frosh team look? Any standouts?
King,
it won't be easy. SM has a solid ground game and an experienced QB who can deliver the pelota accurately.
Last I heard, they have Tuttle, former TC QB coach on the staff, along with Sepulveda (LB's)and a couple other TC alum floating around. Not to mention MM who just plain knows how to build a one for all consensus. Before you know it, parties in disagreement are all on the same page. Their is no doubt an already very good coaching staff at SM has been bolstered in quality.
Their improvement was written on the wall.
I picked La Salle in a close one. Expect a well prepared Titan team come Friday.
After losing their first 2 games by a combined 4 points...can La Salle finally put it all together and get a win against a very tough San Marino team?
Yes; Blair has a bye week!
Miquel,
I'm doing better than usual so far this season - so here goes:
Thurs Night
South Pas big over Hoover 40 -14
Gabe over Keppel 38-6
Glen over La Canada 28-12
La Salle over SM 21-19
Mead over Monrovia 32-21
Mead has too many offensive weapons and bad ass defense, taking nothing from Monrovia, if the Cats win - this would be a "statement" game -
Rams over Moors 14-13
I hope they have grandstands at Moor Field, last week the Freshman game had none. I don't need no stinkin bleachers anyway.
Muir, Serra, Pomona and SF win.
Good luck to all.
Where is Blair, not listed. Bye??
stangs should win this week 2-1 in there tough non league.
33-6
