...Star Picks...This guy's no expert

Star-News preps writer Keith Lair and I will be going head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the "Star Picks" thread.
Melendez: Last week (3-7)
Lair: Last week (5-5)
I went a laughable 3-7 last week and Lair managed to break even. We have a full slate of games with Week 1 on Friday and since most teams played in Week 0 there's a better feeling of how teams look and how they'll fare in Week 1. Someone commented I should add CalPreps' picks to see how I fare against them but I think for now I'll just stick to the Melendez-Lair tandem. The only pick Keith and I both picked and got right was Ayala over Duarte. We both picked and got wrong Diamond Ranch (Muir won), Pasadena (Arroyo Valley won), La Puente (Gabrielino won; upset of the week) and San Gabriel (Cathedral won).

hey buddy, this is one of the best posts that I’ve ever seen; you may include some more ideas in the same theme. I’m still waiting for some interesting thoughts from your side in your next post.
Great post. Hope you write more on the subject soon.

Amazing freakin blog here. I almost cried while reading it!

I am extremely impressed with your writing skills and also with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Either way keep up the nice quality writing, it's rare to see a nice blog like this one these days.. :)

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.
This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
I think all of the fans may like it too.

Sorry for the huge review, but I'm really loving the Dallas Cowboys, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it's the right choice for you.
An idea I had last season was for a change in the points awarded.
Observantcat,
"Without Jordan there is no Falcons" I LOVE IT! this is what im talking about. the players that you have out there would be on jv if all the players where there. You really thing we will lose by 30? i 21 is good quaterback is young would be a jv player, bu the game is tonight im so confident in what we can do. you will see what we can do. Saturday morning watch the tape you and then come back to the blog and we will see
GO FALCON
Ex-Falcon:
This is not a prediction this is a fact. Without Jordan there is no Falcon, I didn't want to comment on this post for the mere respect for Canada. I like him as running back and wished that he could be healthy and play in this first ever MD classic. But knowing what I know on your roster and what Monrovia has been dying to do in terms of last years loss, I will say Monrovia by 30pts...or more. You may disagree but when you blog in saturdays mornings review you will realize that losing Canada is like Monrovia Losing Williams again. I think that if you talk to some of the Arcadia Fans they may have another take on who Monrovia's biggest threats are. #2 DJ Cole could take it to the house on any given play and the receiving core led by Chris Carino and Kendall Boggs are going to be a threat all night long. So with all due respect, this is deja Vu from last year with Monrovia not having Williams. In the Absense of several Monrovia players this year ( Leon Youngblood, Brandon Golden, Josiah Throplay, Brandon Brooks,etc...) It's more than fair to say this game is still in Monrovias favor.....See or talk to you on Saturdays Blog. PS....I think our QB is going to suprise a lot of Falcon Fans.
I anticipate a classic rivalry game with a lot of excitement, some early miscues due to the high level of emotions, but a whole lotta fun. One fun thing about the Duarte game, for me, was getting to hit at least one guy who had been my teammate during the season before.
new york,
Jordan was not the only person to score are break a big play in that game. Jordan is are best runner but not the only person on the field. I was at the monrovia blair game last year. i dont know who your recevier are but we can match up man to man. but you have a good running back and that all i know about so i would put 9 in the box and if your recevier beat us. then more power to you. Even if he dont play i still think we are going to win.
GO FALCON!!!

Which big play guy other than JC, who is out? Go ahead and put 9 in the box. You can only cover so many holes at a time. If our guys execute at full speed we will always be able to achieve a double-team at the point of attack.
NEW YORK,
so you think were able to only get 2 towndowns? why is that? i know for a fact we have big play gu we will have 14 after the first quater. if you run that silly offence we will put 9 in the box. are corner are Capable of man coverage. GIve me some more then the score baby.

You are right. Arcadia and Duarte are apples and oranges. As long as we don't give away multiple touchdowns we will be okay.
Monrovia 15
Duarte 14
This is the same score I posted on some other thread.
the monrovia faithful that are in hiding. i have'nt heard 1 comment from anybody. where are the predictions? where are the monrovia trash talkers? i need something from the M TOWN fans. since your not saying any thing im going to change my prediction. We have way more team speed then arcadia there just bigger. you cant stop are offence.
Duarte 47
Monrovia 20
Evidently La Canada was overmatched in the scrimmage against Antelope Valley. They were OK on defense and couldn't do a thing on offense. In addition, the QB and a RB were hurt and are doubtfull for the game against Crescenta Valley. I would say CV by 20.
Boring....With the Two Best Quarterbacks in the area, I think not.
the muir game will have the best highlights!!! Ls vs MHs will be so boring ........
lets go stangs
A-TOWN report:
Crockum is in,and looks better than ever. He's in great shape this year.BIGGERSTRONGERFASTER!
Although Mitchell is not the only player on the team.
Bottom line is,probably bad news for Glendale.
Although I heard there pretty good this year, better than
last year, and also added a couple coaches from the ex-Eagle Rock coaching staff.Won't be a cake walk for the Moors, but they will be
way too much on defense for the Dynamiters to handle.
A-TOWN is loaded...GO MOORS!
The Stang Fan,
Okay I will give you that when I said there are a lot more people pulling for the La Salle vs. Maranantha game. I really dont have the numbers in terms of fanbase. But I dont think the margin is very far when it comes to amount of people pulling for each game. What I am trying to say is the Pasadena star news is a local paper. We have two local teams playing a very big game. Yes the Muir game brings up a lot of emotions, but they are playing Oaks Christian. The LS-Maranantha pits two very good "small school" teams, with two VERY good quarterbacks. I think for a local paper that is a better game to cover. Now with that all said I am a local guy. I am in no way talking trash on Muir. I am pulling for them against Oaks Christians (pre madonna's). I just feel the LS-Maranantha game is the game that should be covered.
As an Arcadia fan, I would love to see them have the game of the week. But in reality, the Maranatha v. La Salle game should be it. The two top QB's going at it. Two local private schools that have been chompin' at the bit to play each other.
Maranatha v. La Salle should be game of the week.
Week 1 picks:
Alhambra vs. Glendale- Alhambra will be upset if Crockum is out, but I'll go with the Moors in this one.
Arcadia vs. SF- SF wins this by a TD or two and gets revenge from last year's mini-upset. Too much Riley and too much D.
Blair vs. West Covina- It'll be very interesting to see what the new coaches at Blair do with the leftover talent from last year's co-league champs. I'm picking WC in this one though, too many ?'s with the Vikes.
Duarte vs. Monrovia- With all the hype surrounding Muir/OC, SF/Arcadia, and LS/'Natha everyone on the blog has forgotten about the first annual MD Classic. This should be a great game and fun to watch. I've got to go with the Falcons here, last week's loss to Arcadia left the Cats answering a lot of questions. Wasn't there supposed to be some sort of BBQ between the two teams? Anybody know how that went?
Keppel vs. Workman- Uhhhhh.....WHS by three scores.
La Salle vs. Maranatha- In the world of local small-school football this game is HUGE! Now I'm not certain how large that world is, nontheless this game does mean a lot to more than a few people locally. I'm actually enjoying MHS emergence onto the local prep scene, they're a pretty damn good team with some good athletes. However, I think La Salle has just a little more firepower and Coach Peterson is an excellent defensive mind. LS comes out on top.
Marshall vs. Azusa- What will Marshall do under first-year coach Ricky Pickens? I do know this, if his team was half as strong as he is they'd be pretty damn good. Azuza will beat the Eagles.
Pasadena vs. Saugus- Many phs fans were quite upset after last weeks loss to Arroyo Valley. Well, please don't expect a turnaround this week against Saugus. The Centurions will have about 250-300 yards rushing...and you can quote me on that. After three years of ascending in the "W" column, is this the year when the record takes a dip? In short....yes.
Pasadena Poly vs. Campbell Hall- CH wins
Mojave vs. Rio Hondo Prep- RHP proves victorious
San Marino vs. Gabrielino- GHS shocked everybody by shutting out LP last week. Don't look for that same result against SM. SM wins.
Arroyo vs. Temple City- Good first-game matchup for both teams. Tough to call, but I think TC wins by a TD or less.
Muir vs. Oaks Christian- It fires me up to see quite a few bloggers choosing the Stangs over OC, unfortunately I don't see what they do. Too much quality depth and resources over at OC for the Stangs to overcome. I see a final score of 31-20. Of course I would love to come on here Saturday morning and answer questions about how wrong I was and what an idiot I am. I would LOVE to be that idiot!!!!
LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Galetti, you bring a valid point. Arcadia was able to post 41 due to costly Monrovia turnovers...a fumble on the kick, a fumble in the endzone which is why I made the statement in regards to their special teams and defense...all three of these games have the potential to be the "Game of the Week" but why sit through a blowout as many people are saying about the OC/Muir and SF/Arc games when you can see two of the areas top QB's battle it out
King, all I'm saying is that OC and Muir is a matchup with two 1-0 teams, and Arcadia (1-0) is going against a team playing its first game with revenge on its mind for last season. If Arcadia has no offense, they must be pretty darn good to put up 41 points.
1-0 vs. 0-1 doesn't do it for me if I'm picking the Game of the Week. But I'm not, so you still have a shot.
Muir game is the game of the week ! btw
la Salle by 10.... And they have former muir players as coaches
Long live Stang Nation!!!!!
I have to agree with Stang Fan. It's like the Cowboys against The Titans vs the Texans against the Lions. Star power alone makes the game more attractive then the other and the fact the Titans have some very atheletic players makes for a possible upset. The other game is like watching paint dry. Everyone who doesn't attend the Muir game, will look for the score the next morning. The other game is important to those who have affilliation with those schools. No diss just the truth!
Galetti, doesn't the fact that La Salle is 0-1 and Maranantha 1-0 make this matchup that more intriguing? I mean is La Salle that bad and Maranantha that good? I agree the Arc/SF game will be good but I was at the Arc game last week and they have no offense...Golper is it on both O/D and the special teams are decent
@ Madd Dogg
Im an 80's child, so i wasn't old enough to understand the game then. but playin for the stangs, i remember seeing tape of the win over Hart. 14-0 i think it was in '85-'86. Yo that was bananas. Crutchfield and the rest of the guys. I would love to see that type of talent present day going up against OC.
Whatever happened to Loyola, i havent heard any buzz about them this year. usually they are on Muir sched.
@ StangFan
word on the street is that, Muir is garnering alot of attention because of its 'slight' improvement in test scores. also with the re-organization of the classes, and academies, the outlook is bright. Now this is strictly academic, but I hear from a couple of the Pop Warner coaches, muir could be getting some nice freshmen, in and out of the area. so be on the look out.
(random question)
Is it me, or does it seem like, with every passing year, that the players are getting shorter and scrawny. I mean I was a 6'4 senior. I cant believe there are so many lil guys out there.
(another random question)
how come every time a person who ventures out into the woods, or forest and gets attacked by a wild animal, the wild animal is the one who is shot? shouldn't it be the other way around. Its the animal's territory. we ventured in to it. The person who goes and get attacked, should be shot and tagged. or people who live in the hills, and the bougie dog gets attacked by an animal. Dont leave FeFe in the yard. we penalize wild animals, for well... being wild. does that make sense... just my thoughts....
By the way, La Salle being 0-1 already loses the luster of that matchup. Just the way it is.
Maranatha/La Salle is a nice game and will have a decent crowd, but I'd put the St. Francis/Arcadia game (which will be packed) well ahead of that one. Not to mention St. Francis and Arcadia are the much stronger teams. Maranatha/La Salle is a good mid-major game.
Come on,
This is great banter here! I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. But please allow me to retort to some of the things you claim.
1. If I had two tickets, one to see Fresno St. vs. Florida and one to see Kent St. vs. Bowling Green.....uhhhh I think I'll be going with FSU/UF....in a landslide.
2. Watching Florida's (aka Oaks Christian's) uber-talented players would not be the ONLY reason to attend. Fresno St. (aka Muir) also has some very good talent, and I would LOVE to see how they compete against the BEST talent. That is ULTIMATE competition!!!
3. You're correct, Muir IS playing a powerhouse. What in the WORLD is better than the classic David vs. Goliath underdog upset? They don't happen often, but when they do everyone's PISSED that they missed it! You say Muir doesn't stand a chance...you're probably right. But they still have got to "line it up," and from there....well....you just never know. And by the way it would be 100x better than just "terrific" if they did win.
4. Lastly, you mention that there is a "much larger group" of people that would rather have the LS and The "Natha" game covered. MUCH larger? Really? How do you figure? Muir has a MUCH larger fan base than both schools combined as well as all the Muir haters who want to see us lose. Trust me when I tell you that the interest in Pasadena this week is "Can Muir beat the mighty Oaks Christian?" Not "I wonder who'll win the La Salle/Maranatha game?"
Oh and by the way....La Salle by 7.
I completely disagree, I think people would go more for the so called "Kent State vs. Bowling Green." I mean the only reason to go is to watch the talented athletes of "Florida" (Oaks Christian Im sure you were referring too). Sure Muir is playing a powerhouse and it would be just terrific if they won, but Come on. There is a much larger group of people that would love to have the all PASADENA game covered. Nothing against Muir their win last week was unbelievable, but cover them when the game is going to be a good game, this does not qualify for the Game of the Week.
Here's an analogy...
What would you rather see? A pretty damn good local mid-major taking on a national powerhouse (e.g. Fresno State vs. Florida) or two pretty good smaller local rivals battling it out (e.g. Kent St. vs. Bowling Green)?
Which would MOST people choose? Exactly!!! Miguel and the PSN should cover the Muir/OC matchup.
Okay Im sorry I understand that there are a lot of "stang" fans that post, but they dont stand a chance against Oaks Christian. So here is the bottom line, La Salle vs. Maranantha has to be the game of the week. This game has been a long time coming and a lot, I mean a lot of people are looking forward to this game. This is the biggest game of the regular season for both of these teams, Cant say the same for St. Francis, Arcadia or Muir. Miguel this has to be the one. Ohhh and King come on, how did you say it does La Salle stand a chance against Maranantha? Of course they do!
Scottie G,
While I do think OC will beat Muir, I don't think it will be by Calpreps 31-point margin. Remember, they picked Diamond Ranch to beat the Stangs by three. It'll be something like 31-20.
By the way, Cal Preps predicts Oaks 38-7.
Miguel, you've got a tough decision to make, which is the Game of the Week? St. Francis/Arcadia or Muir/Oaks Christian. I would have to go with Muir/OC, although the other could be a good game. Just my two cents.
That is too bad for SoPas. They have had a run of years where they have been very competitive. They seemed to be right on the cusp of challenging in the RHL. I would like to see them avoid a backslide this year, but if it means a RHL title in 2 years, then I'll take it. Back to just trying to beat SM for a successful season. BTW, saw David Allen with Tulane...is he redshirting this year? They moved him to safety. They will have another tough test this week against East Carolina.
Madd Dogg,
I can see your rationale behind a possible upset, however, you are talking about a TOTALLY different Muir than the 80's @ 90's. Back then we had well over 2000 students and our QUALITY depth wasn't so much an issue. Now as a MUCH smaller school with an enrollment of approx 1200 students that depth just isn't there.
Like I said earlier, the potential is there, unfortunately I don't think the Stangs will be able to pull this one off. Come the fourth quarter, the hogs will be exhausted and OC will likely have their way on the ground.
Stang Fan don't be too surprised if your Mustangs win this one. This reminds me of a game in the late 80's, when Muir beat a traditionally tough Banning team, and the rest was history. They would go on to face national powerhouses like Fontana and Eisenhower. The key was their confidence built from their track program. And being a 30yr observer of the program the one thing for certain is when Muir is strong in track it translates to the football field. After winning on the ROAD which is never easy to do, If this team gets pass the "aw factor" they're winning this game.
miguel,
Maxpreps has muir ranked over st.francis....can we see some local changes in the ranking!!!!
cut paste the following link....
http://www.maxpreps.com/list/rankings.aspx
Muir : 178
st.francis : 204
Its time for a change!!!!!!! Stang Nation!!!!!!
GA,
Damn bro, your post literally sent chills down my spine. "A victory by Muir would resound through the SGV for many moons." WHEW!!!! I loved that!!!
Alas, as much love as I have for my Stangs I don't think they have the QUALITY depth to match OC. Is there potential for an upset? Sure, but I thought that last years OC team was the best chance Muir had at pulling out a victory versus the SCV powerhouse. But the mere fact that some of you are picking the Stangs over OC is FIRING ME UP!!!! I love the local pride, and for as much SH** as we all give each other we still root for the SGV teams when they head outside the valley. Thanks for all the support guys. We wiSh you luck too. I can't WAIT for Friday!
LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!!!!!
Goldenarm,
thanks for the support.
What are the chances of Muir beating OC? Does La Salle stand a chance against the Minutemen?
Goldenarm,
Arcadia's problem is that they send all their kids to the band and sure you can convert acouple members!Muir has the lowest enroll in Pacific league by atleast 1000 students! Muir only has 28 players this year including the 6 oline/Dline players.Every year Muir football team average 35 players and have less then 8 linemen. So not having depth is nothing new to muir.
I have to agree that the game of the week is Muir and OC. I will be at the Blair game cheering on our vikings and getting updates on the Muir Game.
Go Vikings!
Go Stangs!
last week I predicted a defensive battle between Mon/Arc...yeah right
TC over Arroyo 21-14
Are we any good? Most don't think so. I gotta believe - and don't plan on stopping now. At our house..Go Rams!
Monrovia over Duarte 30-12
Another tough team for the Cats. Marquise Williams did not clip big yards last week - but his INT set up a score against Arcadia last week, when the outcome was still in question. Cat D will continue to awaken.
San Marino over Gabe 14 -13
Titans begin to turn heads. Fundamentals and short pass attack.
UPSET for the ages
Landslide on Lincoln!!
Gretkzy's Benz rear ends Montana's limo, chain reaction into Will Smith's Lamborghini.....amid the madness Stangs steal the show....WE ARE LEGEND!!!
Muir 21
OC 17
Blair surprises West Covina 40 -28
La Salle over Maran
La Canada stays close but loses 14-13
There is only one true game of the week and it is actually the game of the Preleague season.
OAKS CHRISTIAN versus JOHN MUIR
OC BEAT BC 35-7, not exactly a team bus crushing defeat..and the stat sheet shows Joe Montana's kid doing the passing, meaning the 1st teamers were on the field at least part of the time. Can the Stangs lay the wood to this team...a team that has more assistant coaches than Arcadia has players??
If the tough kids on the inside can hold up and not get plowed, Muir's predatory defense and 4x100 relay team speed can swarm the ball and create havoc. You can bet the football minds at OC will have a game plan fully blueprinted and ready for what Muir brings.
OC is a football institution. This is a phenomenal, unique match up and a victory by Muir would resound throughout the SGV for many moons. The excitement level at kickoff will be off the chart. GOOD LUCK STANGS.
Lair- I like the SFV bias, but come on...St. Genevieve? Didn't their talent go to the two new LAUSD schools in that area?
Saugus over PHS
Muir over OC
St. Francis over Arcadia
And what were people thinking with the San Gabriel ranking? Maybe the Matadors could schedule Avalon for a victory.
I agree with King. The Maranatha La Salle game is huge and is a long time coming. Those two schools should play eachother in every sport possible. The times they have met before it has been a real rivalry. The question is, who has the better overall program now that Maranatha has that incredible campus.

Game of the week needs to be La Salle v. Maranantha!!! Battle of the area small schools..people have been wanting this game for years and it is about time we finally get to see these two schools go at it in football!
whats the game of the week? i hope not arcadia vs St. francis!
St.francis wins by 14......
Arcadia has no skill positions, they just beat a monrovia team that had 5 key players transfer to charter oaks this summer! I hope they don't think Brain R. can do the job! he give of over 200 yards against a real team last year! he will need to do 2 years of usc football to get better! St.franics will stop the running game and the st.fraancis blitz will be too much for the new QB!!!!
Muir game game of the week!!!!! it will be a better then arcadia!!!!
Arcadia 24-St. francis 17

Flintridge Prep at St. Genevieve, - Flintridge
That game at Moyse Field on Thursday night looks interesting. It is probably going to set the tone of the season fro whoever wins, or loses, between LC and CV.
Melendez and Lair,
Rookies! I'll give you guys three weeks to get up to speed. Granted you come in with acknowledged minimal area High School football background...it's like you guys are taking separate sides to spark debate and if so...swell.
Okay pick a surprise outcome for the week. It looks to me like your surprise pick is Maranatha--not so sure boys. How 'bout this? Take Muir over Oaks Christian. Oaks Christian's victory over Bakersfield Christian was either their second team playing or give Muir a chance against OC.

For any South Pas fans, I hate to say it, but I have heard from some in attendance at the Rosemead scrimage last Friday that this may be one of the worst Tiger teams in years. While they said that Rosemead was a very big, strong and experienced team that may be one of the best in the SGV, that was not the sole basis for the result. I was also told that this is likely due to the overall youth and inexperience of the squad, with one starter returning on offense and two on the defensive side. Hopefully though, this years inexperience may translate into a much stronger group next year and the year after. Unless their raw talent improves quickly, and I hope a few players see this and get ticked in order to help do so, I am afraid it will be a long season beginning with the San Gabriel game.
M TOWN fans im ready for what ever reply you have for me.
I think duarte is going to win that game. we have alot more wepon then just are running back. plus monrovia runs a wing-t with a young quaterback. i feel good. they watched the tape from the ayala game and they know what they need to do. i very confident that they will. you will see a differnt team on both side of the ball.
