Football: Star-News Top 10

Above: Maranatha football fans have something to cheer for.
There were a few shakeups...La Salle (0-2) gets dropped though they do trail right behind Alhambra who can drop if it loses badly to Temple City. However, I don't think the Alhambra-TC game will be a blowout. Rosemead moves up one spot to No. 3 while Arcadia drops to one spot at No. 4, respectively. Temple City and San Marino make significant jumps to No. 5 and 6 from 8 and 9, respectively. San Gabriel moved from No. 10 to No. 8, the Moors dropped to No. 10 from 7 and Maranatha makes its debut in the top 10 at No. 9 after an impressive string of victories. The top 10 rankings will run in the paper on Wednesday along with the Prep Scene which includes athletes of the week and the honor roll.
So which game is this week's Game of the Week? Cast your vote below.....

Kentera,
Next time I need a laugh, I'm coming to YOU!!! You've got all the jokes (Muir ducking SF....LMAO!!!) Tell Bonds to nut-up and schedule THE Pacific League team. Or maybe not...I think Hoover has an opening in their schedule.
Hey Stang,
Next time I need an excuse, I'm coming to you! You've got them all. Have a good friday football night.
Huckster,
"Absolute MONSTER!!!" "Tampa Bay won a Super Bowl!!!" "Only death and taxes are guaranteed!!!"
All that said, and you want to know what I STILL hear?
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...........................
Stop it Huck. For your own good....just please stop it.
burbanksports,
Burbank beat Chaminade? DAMN!!! Great win! Yeah, Huckster....watch out.
the realhsfbfan,
You are right, it will be a wide open race in the Pacific...for the 3rd and 4th spots. Muir will win it and JBHS should come in second. Yet, with Burbank's win over Chaminade...I'm not so sure. With Glendale and CV stronger it should be a fun year.
phs I hoped you enjoyed your visit to the playoffs last year...you may not make it this year.
Kentera,
Schedule all comers? Like who? CV? Burroughs? Arcadia? PHS(in years past)? Is "all comers" code for Pacific League. Muir is THE school in this area known for scheduling the big boys. Especially if you're talking the last 10 years. Yes, we got our a$$es handed to us, but we played THE BEST, like LB Poly, Los Alamitos, Loyola, Oaks Christian, Bishop Amat, Damien (when they were good) etc. I may be mistaken, but the only reason you guys have Amat and Crespi on your schedule is because the Mission league and Serra league have a rotation of games because their leagues only have four teams. That's why SF played ND and Loyola last year and will do so again next year, and why SF played Amat and Crespi two years ago and are playing them this year. Mind you, SF's league is WAY better than the Pacific League, I'll give you that, but to say that Muir is ducking SF to play the likes of DR (who many said was good) Venice (who has been a City power the last 6 years) and OC (a nationally ranked team) is an effin joke.
Muir would beat everyone in your pre-season...oh wait...they do...once league rolls around. And yes, SF did beat Muir the last time around (a very weak Muir team who TIED phs that year) but a year or two before Muir spanked SF at their house.
Hey Huckster....Burbank beat Chaminade tonight. We're waiting......
Stang03
You knew that was comin. You left yourself wide open for that. Just imagine the week of Nov.14 all I can say is it's going to be hillarious.
Huck
we're only in the 2nd week and you already warmed up. like I said you're consistant.
Stang,
St. Francis and Muir need to play. But you need to go ask your coach over at Muir why the don't do it. St. Francis plays all comers. Look at their non-league sched. the past ten years. The last time they played Muir, St. Francis won.
Stang 03,
I try really hard not to talk about you "Mighty Mustangs" anymore, because we are never going to beat you guys and people of the "Blog" hate for me to root so hard for my team, you know the lowly bulldogs! I never want to just "blah" "blah" "blah" anymore; because the "Stang Fan" knows I'm an absolute "MONSTER" if anything goes wrong on November 14th!!!! The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won a Super Bowl! Oh, just remember this too you "Super Smart Mustangs" only death & taxes are guaranteed!!!!!
P.S. I was talking to the whole “WSGV” so, next time when scheduling a giant don't have no "MuthaLovin" EXCUSES!!!!!! When you dish it out, just be able to take it!!!!!! BEWARE OF THE HUCKSTER!!!!!!!
How legitimate of a team is Covina to make Rosemead such an overwhelming favorite of Monrovia? Don't want to take anything away from either Covina or Rosemead, but Monrovia isn't going to fumble seven times like Covina and they're going to go hard every play.
If that is true about Golper that is a mighty blow to the Apache squad. That kid was the rock of the team and without him on the field they can be in for a very long season. Who do they have that can replace him, since they were only rolling with about 27 players?
@ Anon
I heard the same thing about Golper. I heard it was stress fracture. It was hearsay, the coach hasn't come out with any formal news. Miguel, maybe you can enlighten us, have you heard from Coach D. about Golper's injury?
@ HUCK
your statement about competing with Giants was good. it appears to me that is a shot at the Stangs. For all intents and purposes the Stangs handled DRanch appropriately, they were supposedly a powerhouse, maybe come playoff time they will be. OC game was closer than the score showed. Muir was right there with them with less than 2min to go in the 2nd quarter. Now I will say you have to play entire game, but for all that was said about OC, the defense did a hell of a job containing them. Special teams had a lapse, which led to one score, and then the offense gave the ball right back, quickly put us in the hole 24-8. Like it has been for the past couple of years, the kids got discouraged and seemed to give up. Or maybe not give up, but be overwhelmed by the score. Lost track of the game plan. You know what i am saying, kind of like when the dogs play the Stangs.
@ Huckster
Now thats a true statement coming from a bulldog. The coaching has taken a hit all around the West SGV, namely P.U.S.D. schools. I heard the school board shot down a proposal to better Muir field and other parts of the school because 'it would be preferential treatment' because Muir is so close to the district yards and offices. thats a bunch of crap. Have you seen St. Francis' field, Muir could be a central point for Blair, Marshall, and yes even your beloved Dogs. (sidenote: maybe if the dogs played on a winning field aka stangs house, they would know what its like to be winners, because the Stangs own the Rose Bowl). PCC charges an arm and a leg to the district, plus you have to have their security pick up the job. When it comes to teaching and coaching spots, thats like pandora's box. The coaches need to be more than just 'security guards' no offense Howard, but for real, these young men need mentorship on the field and classroom. Athletics could be a vehicle to getting this young men and women into some the prestigious universities. But its starts with academics and the rest will follow. P.U.S.D. doesn't care about the kids!!! Yes i said it, P.U.S.D. doesnt care about the kids. The downward trend started back in the 90's and will continue to get worse.
Hey is it true that Golper has a fracture in his foot, or maybe even broke it? Just wondering if what I heard is true.?
Huck,
I didn't realize you are a modest man. I always thought differently of you. I am a overweight arcadia fan (not easy to miss in the stands next to the band) who will probably suffer a stroke if I don't get off my cheseburger diet. Well, it was nice of you to say something about the arcadia's staff. Arcadia's staff as taken a hit too. The funding nor the teaching jobs aren't around like they use to be, not just limited to corporate america. No one is hiring teachers. As Big A (parent of a kid..maybe?) has mentioned before, arcadia lost one of their key coaches to hoover because he got a teaching job in the glendale district.
I agree with you that the Pacific is wide open. The tides can turn for any team. Expect Glendale to win a few more games. Crazy enough, hoover might be a surprise for some. You all at pasadena can emerge out of the clouds of dust. Pasadena usually starts slow but picks it up. Muir & Burroughs look like the favorite, but CV appears to be stronger than last year. If arcadia is healthy, you know from experience that they will put up a fight. But, they don't have the reserves like they use to, so when someone gets hurt, there's a drop off. Burbank looks like they might fall somewhere in the middle.
Too bad you did not see the SF game. SF is good this year. Although, nothing went right for arcadia like it did when I was at the monrovia game, SF still looked powerful. SF is playing with a huge chip on their shoulder, no messing around. They have power, speed, and big time play makers.
The pasadena/arcadia game should be a good one for all. Hope to see you there if i can make it out if Tops burger in time.
Madd Dogg,
Now, I try to keep it real on all fronts but “Muir” is not even a shadow of its’ self either! Bingo left PHS, because Ryan Graves (the father of Marcus Graves) recruited him with much love! I have to applaud him, because I would have never let Bingo go on the west side, especially when he wanted to be at PHS! There were other issues why the young man left too, but if an arm could have been put around the young man I truly believe he would still be at PHS and with him at QB would have made a world of difference for the Dogs and the Stangs!
As for area teams scheduling program “GIANTS” you have to compete with them on the field in order to call the evening a successful gain for the team!
I think ST. Francis and Arcadia probably have the best coaching staffs in the area, but outside of that, everything is below average to poor!!!!!! Some of that has to do with funding, to be totally fair.....
Huckster
Wow!!!!! Reyes will never understand what you just did. I now have DEEP respect for you because when it comes to family I know that my loyalty to them would make it hard to come out and say what you said. Everyone on this blog knows you love HS and you remind me of myself years ago, but the pain of loss after loss made me say enough. I haven't gone to the tussle in two years because i got tired of seeing "them" beat us. I know we have had much better talent than the boys on the westside but the coaches don't get it. Too many mind games with the players, too many times they played their favorite instead of the better player. Too many times it was the system instead of what would work. You don't see muir players jumping ship to come to HS, because they know they might not get a fair shake. Just think this QB from Muir might go from phs unknown to Pacific League MVP that's crazy and this isn't the first time(remember K.P.) same situation we had them first and didn't do anything with them. This is like the Stang Nation said "The phs we've known is long gone" It's embarrassing when I speak to long time alumni and tell them the schools we're loosing to. So until someone comes in who truly understands Bulldog Football we have to sit back and let the Stangs have their say because the earned it,and we didn't.
Reyes,
I never said, Mills could coach! I said, he's made PHS's program "DECENT"! The coaching criticism, he has brought on him self is his own doing! He deserves to get what he gets! I was at the game too; Reyes, we have too much talent to be losing to a team like Saugus. I can only hope things will get better once league starts, because none of the teams are strong this year in the Pacific, including "Muir"!
What an ignorant statement.
It looks like a favor scholarship.
Why in the world would any college coach invest $75,000 and their reputation to give a player a scholarship as a favor? Do you have any idea the amount of money that is invested in a college football player? I guess you don't. They don't GIVE out scholarships. You earn them.
Get a clue.
Fbfan1,
Golper happens to be the #5 LB in the nation according to the scout.com and #11 according to rivals.com. Did you see the play that Golper came on the blitz, recovered, caught riley from behind and stripped the ball? That's an all american play. I don't thinking UCLA is giving favors, actually they are lucky to get him. Riley is hell of a player...props to him.
On the busted statue of liberty play, the exchange was ugly, golper fumbled had is head down to pick up the rock, and riley meet him first like a good defender should, but it took 5 SF guys to take him down.
fbfan1-
The play you are talking about was indeed a busted play that included Riley and at least one other St Francis defender and possibly a third. Golper's hit on Riley was a solo .So what is your point? Maybe you should look at the tape again. Your apparent inability to spell the word "scholarship" suggests you should try working on your academics a little more. I doubt you could hold a candle to Golper in athletic ability and I'd bet his GPA and SAT scores dwarf yours.I suspect both Coach Bonds ( who played QB for UCLA) and Golper's friend Dietrich Riley find you and your comments an embarrassment to St Francis High School
One play that will never stop working is the Flea-Flicker - in my opinion underused at all levels.
Of course I also like the double pass and halfback pass, when set up and disguised well. Nowadays if you throw on first down they call you "creative".
No substitute for the all-mighty ground game but the above wrinkles are entertaining as hell.
Somebody still runs the Statue of Liberty??
Maybe World Peace is a possibility.
Anon I guess you forgot the play were riley destroyed golper on the busted statue of liberty play. After UCLA sees the film they might think twice about the scholorship. Looks like its a favor scholorship.
Week 2 Top Ten:
1. Muir- There is no way I'm dropping the Stangs from the local poll just because they lost to OC. Had the schedule been reversed and the Stangs played Arcadia they too would have scored over 50. Hell, Arcadia was WAAAAAAAY better last year and Muir put 50 on the board.
1(a). SF- With that said the G-Knights also deserve top-billing because they put on such a good first-showing and should be rewarded. Again, had the schedule been reversed SF wouldn't have fared ANY BETTER than Muir did vs. OC. The question will be asked EVERY WEEK for the next two years...."WHy don't they just play each other already?" THis year more than any other year, these two teams are FAR and ABOVE everyone else and the drop from #2 to #3 is pretty drastic.
3. Rosemead- I REALLY want to see this team play, which is why I'm contemplating going to their game vs. the Cats. I like what I'm hearing about their D and their running game.
4. TC- Anytime you shut out an opponent in your first game people will pay attention. And if that team is traditionally a tough team people must take notice. Of all the games last week TC's impressed me most. 34-0? Over Arroyo? I know Arroyo is no power program but they are a hard-nosed proud bunch over there. Can TC sustain that first-game momentum? We'll find out soon.
5. Arcadia- They are about to struggle BIG-TIME if they don't get healthy and just might drop steadily throughout the season. Right now though they deserve to still be in the top 5.
6. Monrovia- They will improve game by game and be a force to be reckoned with come playoff time.
7. SM- Good game last week, and a test for their secondary this week. With the new coaches in place I look for SM to play hard and be able to compete for a playoff spot in the RHL.
8. Maranatha- The Minutemen are on a high after last Friday's big win. Can they continue with this momentum....ABSOLUTELY. And yes, at this very moment I do think they could beat the teams not on this list (phs, South Pas, Blair, etc.) and the ones ranked below them.
9. San Gabriel- Uhhhh....good luck this week.
10. La Salle- I know they're 0-2, but they could easily be 2-0...and they still have Rettig. They're here for at least another week. We'll see how they measure up vs. SM. And NOOOOOO....there is no way I can ever put a team (Alhambra) on my top ten list a week after getting SMASHED by Glendale.
Game of the week:
I've got to go with the Monrovia vs. Rosemead. After last week's embarassment to Glendale the Moors DO NOT deserve a game of the week against ANY team! Sorry GA. I'm starting to wonder if some of that talent at AHS is being wasted.
Anyhow, M-town vs. The Mead is much more intriguing, and could be a preview for the playoffs this year. The Cats bring some speed and a reinvigorated program to Rosemead to battle against a team with A LOT of promise early on and a somewhat established coach and program. Williams vs. Sumler should provide for some good highlights. Truthfully, because Venice is so bad this year I'd rather not make that drive and just might check this game out...well either this game or SH vs. La Habra, or maybe even WC vs. Amat since SH and WC are in Muir's playoff division now.
OK - with obvious prejudice I like Rams / Moors for game of the week.
There is no doubt AHS is better than they have shown.
How much of the Rams victory over Arroyo was the "surprise" factor? Then again, Arroyo never got close to the end zone. Turnovers and good D killed their momentum.
The Moors are bigger and have an offense that can put up points. I am expecting an extremely hard fought game at Moor Field.
Go Rams.
That said, I wish the other games fell on Thurs or Sat so seeing them was possible.
Just a thought....
I believe SF could go 8-2 this year. They are a complete team and may be the best team in the ESGV and WSGV. We'll see when they play Amat and Crespi back to back.
Anon,
I 2nd your thoughts along with Coach Dimanlante. There's really no excuse for losing the way they did, injuries or not. This lose will sting for a while for the apaches. Look for them to be ready by league. They need to have a healthy golper & rambeau to make a run, though. They are impact players that can score in a heart beat.
Did anyone see that play where golper popped riley so hard that golper's helmet went flying? My gosh... that was no high school hit. UCLA could have used some that against BYU.
thank you miguel for the article on the beaten up apaches. coach dimalante was right in saying the injuries were not an excuse for the loss but this story of golper and rambeau getting injured was rediculously left out of the original article and it was nice to see the star-news staff correct this.
Miguel Melendez,
MY BAG,SORRY!!
GO TROJANS!!! SORRY MIGUEL, I HAD TO REPRESENT!!!
What does Venice look like for the Stangs this week. I heard they are better than they look on paper, but that was all hearsay!!
useless fact: Former Muir standout Ryan Graves transferred to Venice for his senior year of football, and then transferred back to Muir to graduate. He earned a scholarship out of it. Personally I think he would have have earned the same scholarship from Muir. That year with Richard Irvin behind center, and Kris Riggins on the opposite side was a record year. Led Californina in passing yards, and Ryan in Receiving yards.
I think San Gabriel may be underrated...we'll see
I think San Marino may be overrated, but deservedly at this point in the season
Yo Reyes, easy with the multiple posting. If that happens again I'll just delete it.
