Star-News Top 10 Poll

| | Comments (3) |

Above: Arcadia's defense could pose some problems for the Golden Knights.

Note: The top 10, which will be published in Wednesday's paper along with the Athlete of the Week & the Honor Roll, did not change much. San Gabriel dropped from No. 7 to 10, allowing Alhambra (No. 7), Temple City (No. 8) and San Marino (No. 9) to move up a spot. Despite losses, Monrovia and La Salle stay at No. 5 and 6, respectively. Why? The Wildcats played a surprisingly tough Arcadia team and the Lancers lost by just three points despite an impressive performance by quarterback Chase Rettig. I can already hear it, "Why didn't Muir take the No. 1 spot?!?!" Hold your horses, Muir. That's because I'm not going to penalize St. Francis which has not opened the season yet. Come Week 2 things could look different depending on how Muir fares against Oaks Christian and St. Francis against Arcadia on Friday night.

STAR-NEWS RANKINGS

1. St. Francis (0-0)
Arcadia should be a good test

2. Muir (1-0)
Impressive win over D-Ranch

3. Arcadia (1-0)
Apaches have balanced attack

4. Rosemead (0-0)
Tough opener against Covina

5. Monrovia (0-1)
Can't afford turnovers

6. La Salle (0-1)
Tough loss to swallow

7. Alhambra (0-0)
Moors should beat Glendale

8. Temple City (0-0)
Backus Season 2 begins

9. San Marino (0-0)
Gabrielino will be tough Friday

10. San Gabriel (0-1)
Defense needs to get in game

Week 1 Top Ten:

1. Muir- I understand that Miguel won't switch SF because they have yet to play, however, I had the Stangs here last week and after a nice win vs. DR they deserve the top ranking. I just don't see them winning this week, but even after a loss vs. OC the Stangs still belong atop the poll.

2. SF- They have what Monrovia didn't have vs. Arcadia...an established coach and program. Well that, and Dietrich Riley of course. They should beat Arcadia at home by a TD or two. Last year I picked the Apaches to "upset" SF, but not this year.

3. Arcadia- I was dead wrong about the Arcadia-Monrovia matchup. COngrats Apaches, that's a pretty good win. Everyone knows Golper is a beast, but his teammates stepped up big-time last week. If my Stangs weren't battling it out with OC I would DEFINITELY be attending the SF-Arcadia showdown, it should be a good one.

4. Rosemead- From what I hear and read people seem to be pretty impressed by the size of the Rebels, which means good things for their RB Sumler.

5. Monrovia- As things shake out over the course of the next few weeks the Cats will either move up a spot or two or move down a few slots. I was REALLY surprised to see the final score against Arcadia. Like NY mentioned before I was caught up in the early Maddox hype. I'm sure he'll get it going in the near future, but realistically it will take some time to put in HIS program. Nonetheless, I still see them winning the RHL.

6. La Salle- I think this team will begin to pick up some steam this week vs. Maranatha. If they don't they could be in for a loooooong season. Something tells me that's not the case however.

7. Maranatha- Hey, why not? The other teams have yet to play, and the Minutemen were impressive in their debut. Once the bigger schools star playing and winning they might move "The Natha" from this spot, but for now I'm leaving them right here.

8. TC- LEt's see what happens this week.

9. Alhambra- Same as above.

10. San Marino- The Mooney factor, and the fact that I think these guys might be able to beat San Gabriel. Come on Mats, step it up!!!

As usual always with a great opinion, Goldenarm.

Lets say Muir gets blown out by Oaks Christian, I don't see the Mustangs dropping from their spot. A close game by Muir and a lopsided loss by St. Francis could easily make the top 3: Muir, Arcadia, St. Francis. I'm not suggesting St. Francis will get blown out by no means, just a scenario example.

All in all it does not matter much right now who is on top. A Muir loss should not see them dive in the standings, for sure. Who else in our area could beat Oaks Christian??

The Stangs have a greater shot at beating OC than SF would...in my opinion.
