....East meets West....

VS.

Bishop Amat (4-1) vs. St. Francis (5-0)
The Lancers, as our boy Freddy Robledo put it, have not been to the playoffs since 2004 and are a mediocre 33-33 since 2002, going 3-7 last season. Despite those numbers, Bishop Amat started the preseason ranked No. 2. The Golden Knights, however, were a few players and a play away from making the playoffs last year. St. Francis was picked the preseason No. 1 and remain the area's No. 1 team.
Tribune's No. 1 vs. Star-News' No. 1
Like I said. Bishop Amat started at No. 2, then fell and now they're back on top, but not before Bishop Amat fans were crying about not being No. 1.
Fred J. Robledo Talks Preps Sports vs. From the Sidelines with Miguel Melendez
Freddy and Steve Ramirez both picked Bishop Amat to win. I know better. I say Robledo and I make a bet but he's ignoring my calls. If he back pedals any more he'll end up on the 10 freeway. Bishop Amat cries so much they now get their own weekly thread on Freddy's blog. I treat everyone the same, which means Golden Knights fans are far better to talk football.
This isn't just another nonleague game. This is like Rocky taking on the Russian in Rocky IV, only this time the "Russian" comes to our side of town, the Russian being Bishop Amat. Every bout has a bad guy and the bad guy on this side of town is Bishop Amat.
I'm sure the Primadonnas (AKA Bishop Amat fans) have something to say about that.
But as the CEO, Mayor, President of this blog I ask that every man, woman and child on this side of the 626 rally around St. Francis.
The Golden Knights, like the boys over on Lincoln Ave., will represent the West and prove we can hang with the big boys.
Every coach should be rooting for St. Francis this week. Muir coach Kenny Howard will be for sure.
"I will," Howard said. "I don't know about everybody else but I'm for the West side.
"If a West side team is playing an East side team I'll always root for the West side."
This coming from a coach who strongly feels his Mustangs belong in the top spot. But for this week Howard is rooting for the boys over on Foothill.
I plan to be there and not only will I get there early but I'll bring my appetite. I'll go out on the limb and say it's not only the Game of the Week but it's also our Video Highlights Game of the Week. Time to breakout the Van Heusen suit.
I'll take a carne asada burrito any day over kettle corn over at Bishop Amat. Ugh, kettle corn. Are you serious?
For this week only, I'll post a thread every day about the showdown comparing both teams not just on the field but everything else like who has the better concession stands, better uniforms, coaching staff, better fans (we know that already) and much more.
Have your say about the showdown.
And if I haven't made it clear yet, I'm calling you out Primadonnas.
Let the talk smacking begin!

I'm an Arsenal supporter and even I have to acknowledge Ronaldo's ability and his brilliance for ManU in the last 2 seasons...last one especially.
SF hasn't cracked the LA Times top 25 yet. I hope if Sf beats Amat then they should be in the rankings. LA Times has no love for SGV teams.
Miguel,
There you have it . Now don't forget my 15% agent fee for bringing the one and only Joe AMAT to the table. He is a great blogger and always has a level take on all topics.
Miguel,
I'm honored for the invite. However if you're looking for any disrespectful trash-talk to fuel the fir - you're barking up the wrong tree/ Although you do seem to bring some pretty good smack... for a band guy!
Did I say that out loud - sorry. No offense, some of my best... well, some of my friends are former band gee... guys. You are doing a nice job trying to stir up some interest in the blog over hear. Most topics are in double digit hits now and you even hit 100+ the week of that big Maranatha/Rio Hondo matchup. But really Miggy, Rocky vs the Russian, *primadonnas? REALLY? And you're mad that the Lancers have their own blog topic? That wasn't OUR idea. We didn't lobby for that. It just made sense for Fred because whether they liked it or not EVERY topic someone brought up Amat. Then the Blue& Gold faithful would bombard the board to stand up for what we know to be true. Now there is one place for them to "smack or be smacked". Funny, there are fewer and fewer Amat haters every week! Next week there may be one fewer - right Miguel?
If the things you think of when you think of Amat are those listed below you haven't been around very long. Now since you're a relative rookie - there was NO ONE harder on the Lancers the past two years than I was. You might call it whining - to us it's letting others know that we have high standards and we expect others to live up to them. BUt even as early as THREE years ago the Lancers went 6-4, beat up on three East SGV traditional powers by a cumulative score of 96-16, and had wins over Mater Dei (you remember them) and Loyola (who won CIF that year). That's losing? That was the '06 school year... not so long ago. What Westside schools could match even those accomplishments recently? Now if you're going to judge us by the standard that was set in the '60's and continued throughout the '90s - then compared to that we haven't been as successful this decade. But few schools have. Certainly NONE on your end of town (although the Temple City run under Hitchcock was special).
As one who has been around a while, I have too much respect for St Francis, their history, and the job Coach Bonds does to make some bold prediction. And after our win over Orange Lutheran I made sure to remind everyone that there were great lessons learned. First - we can play with ANYBODY. Second, be careful because the shoe can always be on the other foot. But if they're expecting the Lancers of the past couple of years - they're in for an awakening. Believe me... it's different in ways that you could only imagine if you're around often. We're not all the way back by any stretch of the imagination and league will be a bear - but we're on our way for sure. Our schedule has been a little tougher to date, so that "may" be a factor - but they have revenge on their mind and they're at home. (Should we park at the Rose Bowl and take the shuttle?).
Maybe we'll flip the script and have our pre-game warmup at La Canada HS like SF used to do when they came to Keifer. To avoid the crowd getting on them before the game they warmed up at Edgewood HS and bused over about 7:15. Cute. To their credit, they have more wins in their history over Amat than any school outside of our traditional league schools so the Lancers are going to have to play well. If both teams play their best - the Lancers win. But that doesn't *always* happen, does it? But I do trust that we will be prepared and ready to go - as I'm sure the Golden Knights will be. Friday will decide.
Now... about that company credit card !:?)
Let me grab the company credit card, I'll be right back....
Miguel,
How much are willing to pay for Joe's services.
Who said I didn't have an In-n-Out burger?! ;)
By the way, I'd really like to get Joe Amat over on this blog so someone spread the word to him.
Miguel,
You would think if you were such a big deal they would have at taken you an In & Out burger instead of those funnel cakes or at least invited you to one of the tailgate barbeques.
kettle corn to go?
Amat 73,
I don't get in food lines. I get things brought to me. You might not know but I'm kind of a big deal.
Caballero,
You're a regular standup.
Amat 73,
Lil Miguelito was'nt in line at the In-Out truck. He was the one flipping the burgers !!! He Mihito, I"ll take grilled onions on my Double-Double animal style !
The Golden Knights will be going out for blood this week. No one forgot about that game two years ago especially Evan King and Rian Younker, who were the only sophomores on the team at that point during the season. I know those boys will be getting everyone fired up. I am feeling both will have a huge game. I can also gurantee Coach Bonds is getting those boys prepared,he won't let anything like last time happen if he has it his way. He will be the first person to tell you that 5-0 means nothing and this is the only game because it sets the tone for Crespi, league, and also to gain respect from everyone in the Valley and CIF. They are definately not going to take Amat easy, especially considering their wins this season. Friedman field is going to be loud and they do not lose there very much so there will be no lack of energy. St. Francis definately pulls this one off. Wish I could be there
HOLD THE ROPE BOYS
Miguel,
Since you spent most of your time at the game in the food lines how do you what the team looked like. Are you sure you weren't in the In and Out Burger truck line also. If you come to the game early enough we will give you some cheese for all that wine your talking about.
Oh I'm ready that's for sure.
I'll be the one wearing a Van Heusen coat in case anyone wants to say hello. When I head over to the Bishop Amat side I'll be sure to bring my entourage with me for protection.
When I think of Amat I think of:Winning first. then:
1.) Haden to McKay
2.) Championships
3.) NFL Pro Ballplayers
4.) SGV only Division 1 team
5.) A HS team Most people recognize by name.
St. Francis? Who? The only name I recognize on your Roster is Justin Sciarra. Geeze I wonder whom he is related to? I am sure you Golden Knights can figure that one out. Hint he went to that school Called Bishop Amat and still donates money to his Alma Mater.
Come Friday you will see this team play Amat football the type of football they were lacking the last two years under a useless coach. I am sure you are basing beating us on the way the team played back then. You will be shocked to see this years team. Huge Differance. Be ready we are coming fulL force.
SF WILL BLOW-OUT BA!!
THIS GAME WILL NOT BE CLOSE!!!
SF-35
BA-10
I've covered Bishop Amat maybe once or twice since I've been a sportswriter.
Here is a list that comes to mind when I think Bishop Amat football:
1. Whining fans
2. kettle corn
3. losing
4. funnel cakes
I heard about this over on the Tribune blog and decided to see for myself. My only take is if you have not seen us yet and are judging us on the last couple of seasons you are in for a big suprise. We are back to playing AMAT football the way it was meant to be. When it comes to stepping up to play a fellow valley team we just seam to turn it up a little more than usual. I believe our physical play and team speed is something SF has yet to come up against in any team they have played and that will be the difference.
Well fist time reader first time blogger here. Eastside Tribune blogger. Amat-St Francis matchup..... 5-0 St Francis team, but against who? Come on your last game vs El Rancho, could you pick a team a little easier (sarcastic here)? Amat has been playing some teams that would destroy the Knights. This Amat team is for real this year and has some very good seniors to go along with some very good juniors as well. I am sure the Knights will be tough at home but Amat is a pretty good Road team. That Los Osos game was lost in the 4th Qtr. and Amat could very well be 5-0 as well. Orange Lutheran was the unthinkable and we got it done. West Covina is 4-1 Damien(well they were our El. Rancho game) and Diamond Ranch, altho not record wise they are a solid team that plays a wicked schedule. 13-7-1 is Amats record vs. St Franny. I really do not see a drop off from Amat and we hand St.Francis their first loss. After a bye week weak performance against Diamond Ranch these coaches will bring this Amat team ready to play this week. Amat loves playing on the road. Lookout St. Francis you think your team is loaded, wait til you step on the field with this years Lancers...Amat 37 St Francis 24
Bruinlaker4,
I'm gonna go with no onions and no salsa...Just give me carne asada, rice, beans, cilantro and guacamole and sour cream if you have it. It's time for lunch.
jcaz,
thanks for stepping aboard with class.
After the last two weeks I've got to give the PSN #1 spot to SF right now. They are currently the most balanced team and have been playing really good football. I don't think that they'll be there for the rest of the year but at this point they definitely deserve it.
Sorry, TC/Monrovia on the west side and Charter Oak/Diamond Ranch on the east side, but this game is EASILY the Game of the Week. No questions asked. Now I know I'll be criticized on the west side for being a "Knight Hater" but the reality of it is SF will lose to BA by at least 14.
Yes, the Knights are playing some really good football, but so too are the Lancers. When I saw that SF had changed their schedule this year and added El Rancho and Rio Mesa I viewed it as a positive and a negative. It's positive in that it guaranteed SF two additional "W's" which weren't so easy to come by last year, something that their fan base was pissed off about. But it also is a negative in that those two games along with the games vs. Arcadia, CV, and Burroughs have not prepared SF for the likes of BA, Crespi, Alemany, and St. Paul (I didn't include Chaminade because they are HORRIBLE this year.) Have you seen those schools' schedules? Uhhhh...impressive is an understatement. Los Osos, Servite, St. Bonaventure, Orange Lutheran, St. John Bosco, Saugus, Corona Roosevelt (up and comer), Harvard-Westlake (no longer just a b-ball school), West Covina (strong team), Diamond Ranch (Strong schedule), etc. Do you see what I mean?
What SF will see this Friday is ENTIRELY different than what they've seen ALL YEAR. The speed, the physicality, the precision, the discipline, the coaching....everything will be multiplied four times over. Meanwhile, SF won't provide Amat with anything new or overpowering. If Amat can beat OLu (albeit with 5 turnovers) they can certainly handle whatever SF throws their way.
WIth all that said, will I be ROOTING for the G'Knights? YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT I WILL!!! It's west side all day for me. I hope they overcome all the odds and break the Lancers hearts like Amat did theirs two years ago. I know you're a parochial school and all but "give'em hell" Knights!! I'll be wearing a little brown under my Stangs4life shirt this Friday.
Amat's QB lives on the "westside." Goes to show what the "westside" has.
LETS GO KNIGHTS WE NEED PAY BAK FROM DA LAST TIME WE PLAYED AMAT WEN WE SHOULD OF WON AND WE EVEN HAD DA PROOF ON FILM DA FOLLOWIN MORNING!!! KNIGHTS WILL TAKE IT IN A CLOSE BATTLE LETS GO KNIGHTS!!!!! GET REVENGE ON AMAT!!
IN THE WEST WE TRUST!!!!
IN THE WEST WE TRUST!!!!
jcaz, I tip my hat to you. Well said my friend. Now let me get back to my antics with the other Amat fans including Robledo and Ramirez....btw, Dodgers losing 7-5 bottom of the 8.
I see you're trying to stir up some interest in the game and some confidence in St Francis.
Good try. So for what it's worth, i'll be the first one from the other side of town, to stir up the pot and throw a few punches to get the ball rolling.
Hum...well, let me remind you of a little bit of history. About two years ago, St Francis came into Kiefer undefeated.
They were playing very good football and it seemed as if they were going to get an easy win against an Amat team that was down that year.
In the end however, Amat came away with a surprising game ending victory. One that perhaps Amat should not have won.
I guess it goes to show you that anything can happen at anytime and in that instance, it did.
Having said that however, I will say, that I gained a great deal of respect for St Francis that night, because as hard as it must have been for that team to haven taken a loss like that, they still wanted to show their sportsmanship and shake hands with the victors after the game.
Amat on the other hand was so hyped up, that they rushed off the field and simply left thier opponents on the field with mud on their faces.
I for one thought that that was a poor showing on the part of Amat, but remember, Amat had not won to many games that year, and a win like that one, must have been a very big deal for them to have done what they did.
Anyway, I for one of course, hope that Amat does win the game, but that this time, win or lose, that they show better sportsmanship.
Miguel,
SF gets this one in a close one. 30-28 SF. Malik Speed will come up big along with Luther Walker. Riley needs some big carries and Evan King has to pounded it. I don't know too much about BA's offensive/defensive schemes but they have the ability to put up points. Their all star coaching crew is very crazy, and whatever the case is, they will keep them in the game.

Miguel, the more important question is not who will win the game but rather what will your carne asada burrito have inside of it, cebolla or no cebolla and salsa roja or no salsa roja ?
GO KNIGHTS!! Bishop Amat is going down Westside style!!
This should be a very good game. If Isaiah Bowens is back at full speed for Amat , it could be tough for St Francis and I think Amat wins in a squeaker. Amat has played well this year against a very tough schedule. If Bowens is not back, then I go with St Francis, primarily because St Francis is at home.
Miguel- You and Freddie should wager that the loser has to wear a USC T shirt to work. That would be worse than a major sunburn.
D-RANCH SALAD DRESSING...That's an instant classic!
WESTSIDE ALL DAY EVERYDAY!!! BA DOESN'T WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH D.RILEY!!! WE SMASH ON EASTSIDE SCHOOLS!!! STANGS SHOWED D-RANCH SALAD DRESSING WHATS GOOD, ST. FRANNY WILL DO THE SAME WITH B*TCH-UP AMAT!!! WHO WANT IT!?!?!
EVERYTHING IS GOOD ABOUT THE WESTSIDE, WESTSIDE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY, WESTSIDE PASADENA(STANGS COUNTRY) EASTSIDERS DON'T WANT IT!!!
