Football: Star-News Top 10 Rankings Explained

| | Comments (67) |

Giving devoted fans and loyal readers an insight to what goes through this head when selecting the Star-News Top 10 Rankings:

1. MUIR (6-1, 4-0) -- (Previously No. 2) The goal for the Mustangs was to play to their potential and the last two weeks they've done just that. Had St. Francis battled and made it close against Crespi last week no way Muir jumps to the No. 1 spot. At this point, comparing schedules will lead us no where. The determining factor at this point is looking at final scores and how dominant or competitive each team is against its respective opponent. And at this point, Muir has dominated the competition thus far, legitimately earning its spot as the area's No. 1 team.

2. ST. FRANCIS (5-2, 0-0) -- (Previously No. 1) The meaty part of the Golden Knights schedule has passed. Still, their schedule will be tough. St. Paul and Alemany will be tough league foes. St. Francis, however, should make the playoffs. If the Golden Knights played against Muir, the Mustangs would win similar to the way Bishop Amat did two weeks ago. Dietrich Riley is the leader of the team and there are others like Rian Younker on defense who can lead the charge, but beyond that there are no other players who can dictate the game the way a Myles Campbell, Jarron Williams, Mitchell Garner and Tyree Mills can.

3. ROSEMEAD (5-2, 3-0) -- (Previously No. 3) There's not much to say about the Panthers. They are dominating the competition in league with a stout running attack led by Tra Sumler. The key now will be if QB Angel Alejandre can hone his skills because come playoffs, Rosemead will need a balanced attack. But the feeling here is the Panthers will make some serious noise come playoffs.

4. SAN MARINO (7-0, 2-0) -- (Previously No. 4) Yes, patiently waiting for Monrovia. Look, the Titans are a strong team this season. Their schedule has been questioned by a few posters but San Marino has won handily. The two wins that help solidify the Titans as a contender this season are Cantwell and San Gabriel. Is it possible Blair and La Canada can pull off the upset? Yes, it's possible, but highly unlikely. San Marino and Monrovia will be 4-0 heading into the season finale. The concern, however, is whether San Marino is outmatched given it now lacks a true passing game without Steven Wright.

5. MONROVIA (5-2, 2-0) -- (Previously No. 6) Ryan Maddox the savior. It was a comment definitely not to snub coach Garrison. Never met the guy but have no doubt he's a great person and even better coach. The comment alluded to Maddox finding a way to make it work this season. Don't kid yourselves, the Wildcats struggled to start the season and gradually improved after their win over a then-unbeaten Beckman team, and what this comes down to is coaching. Maddox has earned his money.

6. ARCADIA (4-3, 3-1) -- (Previously No. 5) For a second imagine the Apaches healthy and strong. Maybe they're 6-1 instead of 4-3, but the reality is injuries are slowing down Arcadia. Besides the Monrovia game, the Apaches have not shown their true potential. Arcadia though should make the playoffs. Arcadia beat Monrovia so why are the Wildcats ranked higher? Because even with a healthy Todd Golper, the way Monrovia is playing now, the Wildcats would win.

7. SAN GABRIEL (4-3, 2-0) -- (Previously No. 8) The Matadors are the strongest 4-3 team. Here's a scary tidbit: San Gabriel's three losses are to teams who are a combined 21-0!!! Enough said. Isaac Valdez is the best QB in the Almont League. He proved that much last week.

8. MARANATHA (7-0, 2-0) -- (Previously No. 7) Talked to coach Joel Murphy a couple days ago about possibly playing a tougher nonleague schedule next season. Imagine a Maranatha vs. South Pasadena or Maranatha vs. Temple City, though it might be pointless next season when the Minutemen lose Kansas State-bound QB Matt Schilz. Maranatha needs to get its act together and finish teams quicker, especially if they're against inferior opponents (like Kilpatrick). Brentwood vs. Maranatha will be a good one.

9. TEMPLE CITY (3-4, 1-1) -- (Previously No. 9) The Colorado Rockies come to mind when I think of the Rams in terms of possibly peaking at the right time. That would be the playoffs. Temple City still is figuring out how to win games. Sure, they blew away Blair last week but for a little while the Vikings were in the thick of things. The secondary might be tested this week with Tigers QB Conor Bednarsky, only a sophomore, throwing like there's no tomorrow. Then comes another test when TC faces a potent ground attack from San Marino's duo running backs.

10. ALHAMBRA (3-4, 0-2) -- (Previously No. 10) I'll be covering San Gabriel vs. Alhambra on Friday, but something tells me the Moors won't be rolling out the red carpet for me at Homecoming. Look, Alhambra has way too much talent to be 0-2 heading into its game against its rival. How Mitchell Crockom isn't making more catches is beyond me. But someone with his size and athleticism should be able to lead the way offensively.

Crescenta Valley is not in our coverage area. Not sure why but those are the rules. But if they were in our area I'd rank the Falcons at No. 3 in the top 10.

p.s. I swear last night I had a dream I was covering the Turkey Tussle. The Rose Bowl was sold out, the lights didn't work but the game was played anyway. I hate it when work follows me into my dreams.

TC Fan, unfortunately, I couldn't disagree more. It is about time, give credit where credit is due... these are not yesterday's Titans or yesterday's coaches. The coach that brought success in the 2000s to the Rams is now the obvious change we see in the Titans. Much has been made about the soft schedule of San Marino and clearly that is open to debate. Only a fool would assume that the 8-0 record is a by product of a soft schedule and dumb luck. What is the obvious change this year???? A huge loss to us, is a SM gain. OVERRATED? If Friday night comes down to coaching, my money's on Mooney. Here's hoping the Rams don't leave it in his hands.

Falcon forever, if you think for one second that there is an upset in order against Muir????? You got another thing coming. Muir's speed at the skilled positions are on point, I know Arcadia had injuries blah blah blah, but do you think that the score would of been that far from what it was last week. How many picks did that secondary get???? Stang Fan can help me with that. There gonne be tight on the receivers, they wont be able to break free from there routs. The stangs speed will most likely be too much for the falcons. Muir 40- CV 21

Let's bring some reason to the picture. All this talk about who is the best in this area in football, well this area has been down for years. Muir does seem to have the best talent year in year out, but probably at the lower end of the coaching spectrum. The team can't convert a PAT, along with other special teams and discipline short comings. I do commend the Muir staff for staying with a program that can't or won't attract quality coaching. PHS Coaches make everyone feel better. They are totally have lost it or never had it.Bonds at SF has proven to very average, despite having very good talent at key positions, game time calls have really hurt his teams. Muir does well in a week PAC league and is out classed in the playoffs.I love Muir and want all area teams to do well, but lets keep it real. A once proud Pacific is second rate.

solid observations. we are young as well, just not that young! TC's starting O-line are all juniors with the exception of Mr. Omellette, who is a senior.

I don't have a gut feeling on the game, and have not had much gut feelings this season, except prior to La Salle, when I happened by an afternoon practice and saw a "new" face on the team. The O line has since discovered who they are and what they can do. Backus has the defensive roster more settled - and more effective. But in the end, some of the parts are still missing lubrication - and well laid plans sometimes grind to a frustrating halt. That may sound critical - but it is not meant to be, it is just fball.

If I had to guess I would say neither team scores more than 21 points. I expect a close game. With the numbers Bednarski is putting up, no way he will morph into Mr. Handoff when TC comes to town.. Good luck on Friday. Where is the best parking??

bigfatfan said:

91030: completely agree with you on Steve Colliau. there is a reason he was All League as a Junior last year, and should repeat this season too. While most of the local Press (this paper included) has been high on Cockrum and Riely, this kid has quietly amassed nearly 50 catches, and a couple of picks, and many many tackles. And while it must be nice to be a receiver on Alhambra or St. Francis, and have plenty of other weapons to distract the defenses, Colliau has been double and triple teamed all season, and has still found a way to get open and make tough catches. It would be nice to see him get 70 catches for the season, not out of the realm of possibilities.

Miguel, GA and the other SP Bloggers:

Though I would love to see SP come out throwing tomorrow AND pull the upset, I unfortunately doubt either will take place. For those who have followed Ed Smith through the years, and I have, he has always been and will always be a "run first, throw second" coach even when he had the talent at QB to reverse that order. With this years team and a sophmore QB Conor Bednarski, who is talented but still a work in progress, I would not expect any sort of aerial assault at all. Also, with SP's defensive front seven consisting mainly of sophmores and juniors it is likely that the relentless TC running attack, with a few play action throws from their very talented and accurate QB Morgan Hatch to their equally capable receivers Bruno-Lopez and Werner, will likely wear down the Tigers in the second half. While an upset in the 28-21 range is possible, more likely is a 35-14 grind it out win by TC. That all being said, some other things should be noted though.

First, this years team with how young and inexperienced it is, is getting better and better and all should look out over the next couple of years. Using a "Tiger" analogy this season has been like a mother Tiger giving her cubs lessons on hunting. They are awkward and overmatched at times but are learning, and few should doubt that they will eventually mature and do what they do best.

Second, and I hope some SP fans will back me up, in what has been a down year the play of Senior WR and DB Steve Colliau has been great to watch. Though he appears to get few plugs in either the paper or this blog, he is one of the top couple of receivers I have seen this year and certainly the best in SP in a while. Unbelievably good hands and routes. His defense appears equally as strong too, since I have seen only a few passes completed with him covering. A great competitor in a tough year for a senior.

Gloucester Coach, I'm with you on your comments about upgrading the So. Pas. football schedule for next year. Keppel and Hoover could be out, replaced by perhaps Gabrielino, La Salle, or Maranatha. Also, I hope CIF is looking to move Blair out of Rio Hondo League as their sports program is just not competitive. I think SP has a legitimate shot against TC this Friday, lets keep our fingers crossed. We played some great D against Monrovia for three quarters last week.

Goldenarm said:

M-town's strength is their "D".

#30, #45 and #55 Lowden - are exceptional players. Haggard mixes it up well, it is a team defense and well coached. TC's O-line played exceptionally hard and did very well against the group.
In the final 3 weeks other RHL teams will not fare nearly as well against the M-town D. Their defensive line has NOT gotten much PR...but they are excellent.

Goldenarm said:

TC fan,

Right now my mojo and thought is focused on So Pas. Don't forget we beat the Tigers by a thin butt hair last year, thanks to Williams Do's spectacular kickoff return. We are at their house and they always bring something special for TC. No offense guys, but we don't have a Williams Do, or a Broadnax for that matter, to blow anything open for us. We have to go mano a mano to win games, like O-cat said, we inch our way to the goal line. Nothing wrong with that, we just need to take care of biz at SoPas FIRST.

At the Blair game, SM had every Titan coach alive in the stands scouting us...with the exception of MM. They are not discounting us - there are good fball minds in that crew. It is fine by me wherever we get ranked. We win our next 3 and we rock. Este viernes primero.
Go Rams!!

The Stang Fan said:

the realhsfbfan,

I think you're right about falcon fan. But the post does bring me to a major oversight this year. The Muir lines, both offensive and defensive. Both have been playing lights out, especially the d-line. As usual the "pretty boys" get all the ink, but as true football fans know, it's the interior guys who determine wins and losses. GREAT JOB HOGS!!!!!

billy jacob,

There's a MAJOR difference between "hoping" and reality. And the reality here is that Muir wins by at least 14 and keeps the #1 ranking through the rest of the year.

Muir vs. SF,

These are the types of arguments that keep these blogs going. Everyone has their own opinions, but at the end of the day they are the two best programs in the WSGV. With that said however, at this point in time the Stangs are better than SF. Why? Muir is a MUCH more explosive team now than what they were in September when they faced OC. The offense has made some KEY adjustments which has made ALL the difference. Hell, Bingo's not even the QB anymore with Williams taking 95% of the snaps! You always hear fans say, "if we played such-and-such again we would beat'em." Well, truth be told, I'm not so sure we'd beat OC right now but the game would be MUCH different. The three pick-6's more than likely would not occur because Williams is far more accurate than Bingo is and from there we are IN the game. But hey, they smacked us and life goes on. Bottom line, at this current point in time Muir is way more explosive on offense than SF and the defense is just as good if not better. Again, there is now way Muir is shutout vs. Crespi and no way that they are limited to just one trick play TD in two games vs Amat and Crespi. If they win their league, which they won't (Alemany will), they should be considered to be back on top to share the #1 spot with Muir.

billy jacobs said:

i support SF 100%, and saying that i am not too fond of cv, but i am hoping that cv will beat the "stangs" so the argument for #1 will be settled. GO FALCONS (this week)

Miguel, seriously? San Marino will be heading into their finale 4-0? Trust me, TC will roll over them. You obviously weren't informed about what happened last season. San Marino was 4-1 coming into league, but then tied La Canada, beat Blair, and lost three straight. Temple City will prevail in that game. Make sure you come watch that game. As it was heard last year, (San Marino)OVERRATED!!!!! Anyone agree with me?

Thanks for the props to Maranatha, that being said most us here know how good we are and are not. When we take a CIF than I will be ok with kids thumping (a little) until then I hope they remain calm.

Schilz is good Pasadena Guy but by no means is he the team, they dont rally around him, they rally for thier coach. I have spoken to the players and he does not lead the majority of him, their coach does.

I hope we do play some big teams, just to finally say yes or no to the "if" questions.

Maranatha should play against more local schools in every sport. The time has come for mostly the Rio Hondo League schools to step up. They must know they'll get beat. I think MHS will be better next year not worse.
The most talented and deepest class they have is their Junior Class. Football should be better next year and look out for the Baseball team!!!

Gloucester Coach said:

Pasadena Guy,
That is an excellent point. It's like D1 schools scheduling 1AA teams, there is a lot of risk and some huge embarassment at stake if a "big" public school loses to small private school. I think it's worth the risk. If a smaller school is willing to play why not put your pride aside and go for it!

As a South Pas fan I would love to see them play Maranatha. I think it would be a good game. I hate that we play Mark Kep now...not to knock you Keppel fans out there but your program is just not that competitive. That game use to be CV, then it changed to Bassett and now it's Mark Kep...I would love to see SP's schedule for out of league be, San Gabriel, Alhambra, La Salle, Maranatha and Gabby.
Let's get rid of Hoover, Glendale and Mark Kep

I have a hard time following your reasoning. You're comparing Muir vs Burbank and Arcadia against St Francis vs Crespi and Bishop Amat? That is just not fair. Let's compare how Muir did against a good team that is similiar to Crespi or Bishop Amat. That would be Oaks Christian. They got blown out. Props to Muir for handling the teams in their league, but St. Francis has beat these same teams. I have no problem with Muir jumping up to No. 1, but let's not start acting like the BCS and rewarding teams just because they lost early and their league is not very tough. I want you to go on the record and say that St. Francis will jump back to No.1 if they win their league.

good points pasadena guy.
I remember when South Pasadena had Bell Jeff on their schedule and win or lose I don't think it helped or hurt either program.
By the way Stang Fan....there are still some schools that think of Bell Jeff as undisciplined-ghetto even. Especially when they hear Bellarmine Jefferson. Too funny. Of course when they figure out that it is just of few blocks away from Burbank High- they figure "easy win".

I think your questions are valid and worth asking concerning how Maranatha would match up against schools like TC, Gabby, or PHS. Using La Salle though as a measuring stick doesn't exactly carry that much weight though. Reason being, when Maranatha played La Salle, La Salle was at full strength. They had ALL their players and depth. Their rash of injuries is what has lead them (La Salle) to the disappointing season. I have to point out though, that I think Coach Peterson is still doing a great job with the Lancers. That's a first rough year though.
In all honesty, having lived here in the Pasadena area for over 20 years now and observed the recent growth of Maranatha's program, I think they might give some teams a good game. Mainly due to the QB Schilz though. With him at the helm and having seen South Pasadena, Gabby, and even PHS, I would take Maranatha over them. Without him, they're probably a bottom of the Rio Hondo league team.
My challenge isn't really to Maranatha, because it sounds like they're asking South Pasadena, La Canada, Blair to schedule them next year, but to those schools to schedule them. By no means am I saying that they're dodging them, but what do they have to gain? It's a lose lose. If they win, they're supposed to and if they lose, uh ohhh, Coach is ticked!!

They should be in the finals in the Mid Valley.

Arcadia is much different now since the monrovia game because of injuries. Despite monrovia losing to arcadia in week 0, monrovia is a better team now than arcadia because of a lot of reason, and they should be ranked ahead of them. It hurts to say that though, but i am being honest. I am not complaining. I hope arcadia proves me wrong and they beat Burroughs, Burbank, & CV.

But hey I agree the way monrovias playing right now, I doubt that they could do what they did early in the season. Muir is number one and all you St. Francis fans just need to accept it and get over it.

WOW so true Miguel, San Gabriel's 3 losses are to undefeated teams!. But I'd still like to see them go up with Rosemead! I Just wish that Keppel just headed to the mission valley league to transfer Rosemead to a tougher league (Almont league) . I'm just dreaming here but it's a good dream lol.
