....High School Heisman Watch 2008....

| | Comments (14) |

The equivalent of our Heisman is the Area Player of the Year. For football purposes we'll call it our High School Heisman.

I will have a top 5 list every Wednesday with my "High School Heisman Watch".

The list of player is in no particular order and you'll note some players will jump in and out depending on their performance.

This week's list:

1. Brian Gonzalez, Alhambra, WR., Sr. -- If you guys still read the paper you will know that he plays just about everywhere. In addition to catching seven passes for 194 yards, Gonzalez also connected on two field-goal attempts, scored all five extra-point attempts and had five touchbacks on kickofffs. Not bad, kid.

2. Darrian Cazarin, Alhambra, QB, Jr. -- Threw for 369 yards and had three touchdowns in the Moors 43-14 win over South Pasadena last week. Now, if he can stay consistent and have a good showing against South El Monte then I'll be convinced.

3. Tra Sumler, Rosemead, RB, Sr. -- Rushed for 221 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Rosemead past Temple City, 45-14, last week. I was impressed with his toughness and ability to get yardage going straight down the middle. When he did opt to go outside he eluded defenders with such ease.

4. Marquise Williams, Monrovia, RB, Sr. -- Dude is getting into a rhythm and it'll be scary to see him come RHL play. He rushed for 196 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 52-7 victory over La Salle.

5. Jarron Williams, Muir, QB, Jr. -- It's nice to see your backup QB racking up good numbers. Williams completed 12 of 18 passes for 127 yards. I'll be honest, Williams won't be in the hunt come Player of the Year consideration, but he deserved to be on this list this week. I think he's a junior but he could be a senior, I think. "We have some of the best athletes in the San Gabriel Valley," Muir coach Kenny Howard said. How can that not be true when your backup QB puts up those numbers?

Don't see your guy on the list? Nominate him and state your case or stop your yapping.

i think isaac valdez from san gabriel should be somewhere on this list the fact that sg had a bye last week should not penalize him. i'm looking forward to the San Gabriel vs Alhambra game thi year it should be exciting to see valdez go up against cazarin they are both juniors and are both really good.

Deacon Blue,

So you think that I'm a Democrat do you? O.K., I'll take that, but can you take the loss on Friday night that the Minutemen are going to hand out????

Miquel,

Nick Conora.

Far and away the leading tackler in the RHL, even with one less game in the stat bank!

i really do think you should change the name or whatever. they do change from week to week, from what i can tell, based on the previous week's stats. either that or change the process to have it a continuous list occasionally changing or adding others.

Hard to say it but somethings you cant deny...what a good game the moors had against a young south pas team.. taking nothing from what they did on OFFENCE. They will be tested this friday vs. So El Monte but let me be the first to say i will be at this game to see the moors get "tested" and if they "WIN" this game which i (dont) believe they will i will be the first to say "THEY ARE FOR REAL" and support them..San Gabriel got real lucky last year when Alhambra was unable to score on schurr from the 2 yd line otherwise the moors win league. i seen san gab's homecoming last year and the moors put it on them "BAD"...So i will be suprized if SG doesnt return the favor this year..i look forward to seeing the almont league play out schurr looks small this year ..i will be back saturday

Miguel,
during the summer I mentioned the fact that Brian Gonzales was probably the best all around WR as far as
being a possesion Wr and it's great to see him coming around. Not to mention the fact that he is probably the best kicker I've ever seen since I been following the moors. This kid's leg is amazing.I've even seen him make
a field goal on kick-off!Awsome!
If Cazz keeps his consistency this friday night
and entering league play, the Moors will be a very
dangerous team. GO MOORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miguel,

I get what the guys below me are saying....but, it doesn't really matter. There's nothing wrong with some different kids getting some ink every now and then.

Btw, Jaron is a junior and he's put up some decent numbers the last two games going 23 for 37 and 332 yards, if I'm not mistaken. I think it's awesome for you to throw him up here for a little recognition, from what I understand the kid works HARD. Not to mention he is a REALLY good DB, playing both CB and Safety. Last week vs. Glendale he read and jumped a hitch route by squeezing threw two potential blockers and would have had a pick but as he was diving to catch the ball it caromed off his chest. The kid also brings the wood for someone his size and is a great tackler!

As I mentioned before, the great thing about this is that with Jaron's success you can now throw Bingo just about anywhere and do a multitude of things with him. You can line him up at QB, RB, or WR, use him as a decoy, double passes, etc. It just puts another great athlete in space to wreak havoc. Now if the offense can just PLAY HARD and to their ability we'll be alright.

LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. The "Heisman" race typically has a good two to three players who are in the race on a consistent basis. This seems more like a player of the week type thing similar to your 'honor roll'. The Heisman should be based on stats throughout the entire season not just week to week.

Confused said:

Why don't you call it player of the week? If it is for player of the year, then you should include the week and cumulative season stats for each player.
