(UPDATED at 12:56 a.m.)

I gotta say this and don't take it personal or get offended Kenny:

I was not impressed by Muir.

The second-ranked Mustangs (4-1, 2-0) escaped with a 13-10 victory over Burroughs on a chilly Friday night in Pacific League play at Muir High.

I will say that I came away impressed with junior quarterback Jarron Williams, who completed 8 of 14 passes for 146 yards. Senior Myles Campbell caught seven passes for 109 yards.

Reuben Thomas started at quarterback, but later lined up in the backfield and at wide receiver. He returned punts, too. He rushed for a 3-yard score with 3:09 left in the first quarter to put Muir on top, 7-0.

That score was set up by a string of plays that started when Fernando Aguilar tackled Indians (2-3, 0-2) quarterback Lucas Yanez, whose fumble at the Burroughs 18 was recovered by Marcus Graves.

I thought Chris Dunlap was going to carry the ball a lot in this game. He had three. His first was a 20-yard touchdown score in the third quarter that padded Muir's lead 13-3. His next two carries were for no gain.

I'm hoping someone from Muir can fill me in: Why does Thomas have to check with his coaches for the next play on almost every down from the line of scrimmage? I found that a bit weird.

Burroughs couldn't get anything going on the pass. They passed for only 46 yards on 3 of 9 attempts. They did, however, rush for 127 yards on 34 carries.

The game was a lot closer than Muir would have wanted. The game also had a disturbing ending.

The Mustangs stopped Burroughs on fourth and 4 at the Muir 34 with less than a minute left in the game after the Indians' Derek Cwik attempted a fake punt. Muir's Robert Felton made the tackle for a loss.

That's when things turned ugly.

Muir took a knee with just under a minute left to run the clock out. On the Mustangs' first knee, Joseph DeLeon was tackled hard by an Indians lineman, which escalated into a mini-scuffle after Muir's Jeremy Jacob got involved.

When players lined up at the end of the game for the traditional handshake, both teams and coaches had to be separated after a fight almost broke out.

No punches were thrown and order eventually was restored.

I was on the field as it unfolded.

I'll be straight up and say it: Burroughs couldn't handle the loss.

They were denied on the fake punt (or whatever it was), they were frustrated and they let their emotions get to them.

DeLeon was tackled hard and I'm sure the tackle felt harder because the kid certainly wasn't expecting it since Muir was taking a knee.

I heard some nasty stuff coming out of Burroughs as they "shook" hands. That's when players had to be restrained. I was just trying to get out of the way. My question is: where was the police or campus security when all this happened? I jogged back to my car and saw three police officers standing there talking.

This shouldn't have happened but Burroughs coaches let it happen.

Completely inexcusable on their part.

Enough with that.

In case you guys don't know. I write a weekly column every Friday. Here I talk about the crazy economic crisis and how it's affected high school football. If you guys have any column ideas be sure to throw them my way. E-mail me at miguel.melendez@sgvn.com ..

... Shout out to my girl Monique, the Muir cheer leaders coach. Wassup girl. You better start reading my columns. You know what I'm talking 'bout.

.... During the third quarter, the Muir mascot was having a dance-off with a member of the Mustangs matching band. They danced to a beat from the Muir drumline.

Upon further review, the win goes to the band geek.

Friday's scores with my thoughts

Muir 13, Burroughs 10 -- I did not come away impressed with the boys from Lincoln Ave. The first half proved to be tasteless. I will say this, Jarron Williams will be a great QB next year.

San Marino 29, San Gabriel 17 -- Yeah, I got this one wrong, SM fan. But the Titans are back. San Gabriel had a 7-0 lead after the first quarter but the Tians stormed back to take a 20-7 lead at the half. It sounds like the Matadors coughed this up but credit to San Marino and its coaching staff for winning the chess game.

South Hills 14, Rosemead 10 -- This is proof that the Panthers can hang with the big boys. Rosemead not only solidified its ranking but opened eyes. The Panthers could make some serious damage come playoffs.

Temple City 28, La Salle 17 -- Where has Max Ruckle been hiding all season? Dude rushed for 197 yards on 31 carries and scored three touchdowns. The Lancers will come back strong next week. It's only a matter of time. Just so happens that this time it was the Rams' turn.

South El Monte 35, Alhambra 7 -- I'm shocked. Absolutely. Shocked! From what I hear the Moors were lining up three running backs in the back field. What's up with that? Mitchell Crockom was ineffective. Jose Garay had a big night for South El Monte. It was a dirty game. There was over 200 yards in penalties and two Alhambra players were ejected on separate plays.

Arcadia 22, Glendale 6 -- Does this mean Arcadia is better than Muir? The Apaches were led by UCLA-bound running back/linebacker Todd Golper. He caught touchdown passes for 32 and 66 yards and ran one from 3 yards out. Sophomore David Maldonado rushed for 104 yards on 25 carries in his second varsity game. Kid could be a stud next year.

St. Francis 45, El Rancho 7 -- I'm not surprised. The Golden Knights are the real deal. Looks like they learned their lesson from last week.

Cantwell Sacred-Heart 33, Bosco Tech 7 -- I was wrong.

Duarte 34, Gladstone 16 -- Don't look now but that's two in a row for the Falcons.

La Canada 28, Arroyo 0 -- It's a combination of both, to answer your question La Canada fan. The Spartans are taking advantage of the cupcake teams, as they should.

Maranatha 14, Rio Hondo Prep 7 -- I think the Kares are much better than I'm giving them credit.

Pasadena 51, Hoover 6 -- The Bulldogs led 45-0 at the half. If Pasadena didn't win this game then they were going to be in some serious trouble all season.

South Pasadena 35, Keppel 6 -- Enjoy the win, Tigers.

Malibu 20, Flintridge Prep 7 -- Thought the only thing Malibu kids knew how to do was surf? Go figure.

Pasadena Poly at Desert, 6 p.m. -- ..waiting..

A "new" giant lineman migrates to Muir?

Somebody over there has got some good fortune in their pocket. How big is the kid?

New York said:

I had anticipated that Muir would do its best to "replace" Youngblood, likely by committee, but then everything else would be business as usual except even better because your QB was a returning senior. I understood that Thomas is your best ball player and that every play would start with the ball in his hands. Instead, Muir has a new RB, new QB, new schemes, etc. You guys may be losing your athletic advantage if your guys are not playing at full speed due to not being completely comfortable in the new system. Big mistake.

Good luck.

NY,

I hear you. Drastic changes weren't made but there are just certain things that were successful last year that they haven't displayed this year. I would LOVE to see Bingo back in the option formation as well as using a little more of doubles and empty set to open the field up some. What they've added is that no-huddle offense that audibles at the line when the coaches give the new plays. Obviously, it hasn't led to more points and I'm sure the coaches have certainly taken notice. I look to see them open it up a bit and put some more points on the board this Friday. The Stangs are DUE!!!

LET'S GO STANGS!!!!!!!!!

New York said:

Stang Fan,
Why in the world would your coach disregard 2,400 yards of offensive production that Reuben put up last year? Why go to a new "system"? I would have been licking my chops at the thought of Thomas coming back as a senior and putting up 3,000 yards this season. This sounds like a classic case of coaches having too much talent on their hands and spending too much time dreaming up new ways of doing things because they have the luxury of talented players who can bail them out.

Let's not forget that the QBs are not the only players on the team who have to learn the new system. PLUS, the coaches have to learn it as well.

pacleagueoserver,

I have no idea where that behemoth came from, but damnit I am ECSTATIC to have him....that kid can easily be a 1st team all-league selction.

sstress,

You are right, he did jump offsides, twice I believe. Both times were inside the 5 yard line if I'm not mistaken and the penalties helped Burroughs get their only TD. I attribute that to his probable lack of practice, again, I haven't seem him ALL year. A couple weeks of practice under his belt and I guarantee you this kid will DOMINATE the interior of most team we'll face.

excuse me...Alhambra never recovered from the Glendale loss? Wow, you act as though there hasn't been 3 additional games since that game. With the exception of the most recent loss to El Monte a.k.a THE GHETTO BIRDS....we won each game and handed South Pas a good A** kicking. So a team has a bad game and everyone wants to rain on their parade? Ok well with that said, we begin the ACTUAL season this coming Friday and sure we come in as the underdogs to Schurr BUT again, you people act as if Schurr gave it to us last year...If you were there, I recall us going into triple OT because we kept giving it again and again....

Now El MONTE was the pursurer of the B.S. that went on this past Friday and the AGGRESSORS not us. If we did anything to imply otherwise, it was pure retaliation at the very least....

We may have been down last Friday but we ARE NOT OUT by any means!

Oh yeah and you speak of class, "p*to" and racial slurs are the CLASS these football players brought with them. EL MONTE though a decent tea with only REAL two shining stars (QB and RB) you are classless and pathetic to have to resort to such candor...

JUSTAFAN!!!

Yes there were MANY penalties called in the South El Monte v/ AHS game however you are WRONG in stating that most of those penalities were against AHS! As for the non-discipline, were you watching the GAME with El Monte eyes? They have got to be one of the most "ghetto" versions of football players I've ever seen....if AHS retaliated, it was because we weren't taking anyMOOR of their B.S. Our coaching staff sucks...no argument there but to say that our team is small, untalented is a load of CRAP! We outweighed them by a ton and we DO have talent...WATCH EVERY ASPECT OF THE GAME BEFORE YOU GO OFF ON A SPEW OF NON-SENSE AND B.S. THE CIF IS NOT OUT OF THE PICTURE YET!!!!
IF YOU'RE JUSTAFAN, SPEAK FROM BOTH SIDES AND OH YEAH, FACTS WOULD HELP TOO WHEN REITERATING A GAME!!
P.S. NOT TAKING ANYTHING FROM EL MONTE EITHER BECAUSE THEIR QB AND RB ARE SICK! BUT THAT'S WHERE IT STOPS...THE REMAINDER OF THEM IS GHETTO AND THAT'S JUST NOT HOW FOOTBALL IS PLAYED!!!!!

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it #78 who had three consecutive false starts, which allowed Burbank to score...

Anonymous 2:24,

I hear people, including you, on this blog calling for a change at the QB position. I can't say that I entirely disagree. In the current offensive system that the Stangs have in place #10 Jarron Williams is the better QB. If the Stangs stick with this system, I believe that the change should be made and Bingo should play mostly WR and a little RB. With that said however, do NOT dismiss Bingo as a non-effective QB. Remember what the kid did last year. 1500 yards passing and about 900 yards rushing!!! Not bad, right? So what's the difference? Plain and simple....the system. Bingo worked quite effectively out of the option offense that Muir ran last year. I have seen them run it only a few times this year. They also haven't been running some of the same passing formations from last year that opened up A LOT of space for Bingo to run through once things broke down. I hear the people in the stands too and I can understand their frustrations...but do you think the coaches aren't MORE frustrated? Exactly....

Just wait another game or two and let's see what happens and if any adjustments will be made. I have a feeling that once the decision makers on the offensive side of the ball make the appropriate changes in personnel or system things will work out MUCH better than they have been the last two weeks.

No bubble bursting or upsetting at all here. Just thought that before you made your pronouncement you'd might want to be presented with some more facts. Bottom line is that the Apaches got walloped by SF and some Apache fans would like to think that others would get the same treatment. But take a look at what CV did against SF, they CERTAINLY did not get "killed" and really held their own...again, unlike the Apaches.

As far as the Stangs on the verge of getting upset by CV or BHS...no I don't see that at all. The only reason folks might be thinking upset is because of the way the offense has played in the last couple of games. Has anyone considered how STRONG our D is? I PROMISE you we have the STRONGEST D in the area right now....BAR NONE!!! And to top it off, a beautiful sight to behold occured last Friday when Muir added a MONSTROUS defensive tackle who looked like Tank Williams, Grady Jackson, or William Perry. Anyone in the know please tell me that kids name, folks in the stands only referred to him as Mookie. OH MY GOD this kid is a beast!!! His presence alone DEMANDED a double team which obviously freed up the backers to make some key plays. Where has THIS kid been Coach Howard? But I digress.....as soon as the offense wakes up and goes into ATTACK mode we will all see the REAL STANGS. After all, we've still got a LONG way to go.

The game vs. CV should be a GOOD ONE though!

Like I keep on telling you let #10 play quarterback and #23 play receiver this week and you will see what i'm talking about . But let them play the whole game stop playing favorites with certain players everybody in the stands can see whats going on. #2 Chris Dunlop at running back,#10 quarterback and #23 at receiver and you will see the diffrence.

Question whatever you want bro. I've been a sportswriter for seven years in the second biggest market.

I stuck around for the whole altercation, long enough to see Muir head to its locker room and interview coach Howard. So I did not "fear for my life". Geez, can't a guy just jog back to his car to beat traffic and deadline?

My problem with Burrough was when their guy slammed into Joseph DeLeon. The Burroughs player should have been ejected but my guess the refs didn't because there was less then 30 seconds left in the game. After talking it over with Kenny Howard today he agreed the Burroughs player should have been ejected.

I asked Howard, "What disciplinary actions would you have taken if the roles were reversed?" And he answered that without a doubt if his player had slammed a guy his player would not play this coming week.

Pacleagueobserver, if you see me on any sidelines be sure to come up so we can talk football. I get the feeling you won't though. It's all good.

pacleagueobserver said:

why is everbody's panties in a bunch over a fight that didn't happen? The Muir/Burroughs altercation was nothing more that what happened in the Dodger game last night. No punches were thrown, no one was even pushed. Both teams were just puffing their chests out a little. This happens from time to time in sports and especially football. In this type of situation the same altercation may have broken out if the score was reversed. Would everybody be calling Muir classless because they were the ones who lost? No one is calling Kuroda classless for last night. They are reffering to him as a competitor. Everyone should just relax.

The ones to blame are the refs for letting it get to this point. Penalties were not thrown on either side in those last couple of plays. Miguel, I have been reading this blog for a while and I am really starting to question your knowledge of football. For instance wondering what was up with Muir's style of offense and audibalizing, after looking back to the sidelines. Did you watch Ok st./Mizzou? Both schools do the same exact thing. This an offensive strategy used by South Lake Carroll High in Texas. One of the top schools in the country. Many use it? This among other observations that seem off base. Maybe you don't learn football by playing the band. You also could have been man enough to stick around and actually wittenising this so called brawl. You feared for your life in a punchless fight.

I agree with the last guy. If you were on the sidelines, you would have known that a Muir coach was out of control and started the whole thing after the Muir / Burroughs game. I was on the sideline also... Here is how it went down.

Muir up 13-10 with no timeouts left, was taking a knee to kill the clock. Burrougsh had all three left. Called after 1st down and 2nd down. So on third down, Muir in Victory formation runs dive at Burroughs who though they were taking a knee. Muir stopped the clock with the first down. The next pay, again in Victory knee formation Muir QB runs for a few yards. The next play, Burroughs ready this time becuase of two straight actual plays comes hard and hits the lineman. game ends!! A Muir coach walked straight up to the Burroughs coach yelling madness, the Burroughs coach tried to talk to him, but couldn't even get handshake from him. The muir coach then split the the line of two teams while shaking hands and made Muir stop, like spliting a zipper he pushed kids and sent his players into a rage telling them not to respect Burroughs.

I also want to add that Burroughs had 5 or 6 administrators to Muirs 1.. If he was an administrator, he might have been a trainer.

All in all... I think the icing on the cake is that Coach Howard was great after the game. Even apologized to the Burroughs staff for the way Muir acted out after the game.

I think that you need need to get your fact straight if you going to put your self into a position that people are going to read your crap journalism.

BTW... How was your shout out to the Muir cheerleader coach... Hope that works out for you.. Very professional, good work.

"The SoElMo offense can both pass and run and the Moors defense CAN be run on without doubt. It is a matter of fundamental football, SoElMo blocks and tackles better than Alhambra, is more aggressive and better disciplined defensively. Offensively, SoElMo returns Garay at QB, in fact a majority of the offense are returning starters. A potent offense.
These are my reasons for favoring ElMO, not the crap you suggest". (end quote)

As stated before I would love to see AHS do well and go deep into CIF playoffs. Until changes take place and TEAM DISCIPLINE is established, it is unlikely to occur.

You are highly articulate as well. But, would you agree that your stangs are due for an upset because of their recently play that started with glendale and carried on in to the burroughs game? You don't feel that CV or Burbank is closing the gap on you all.

This is just one mans opinion. By the way, I didn't know I was worthy of such a long response. Kinda made me feel important. Keep up the good blogging.

The Stang Fan said:

Alright. Now that I've had a couple of days to sort out some things and not just react to my disappointment in our offense, here are my takes.

realhsfbfan,

I can understand how one can look at the scores of the Muir/Burroughs game (13-10) and the SF/Burroughs game (30-5) and automatically assume that SF would "destroy" Muir. But let's take a look at some things.

First and foremost the RB from Burroughs (#22) IS THE TEAM. He had 25 carries for 197 yards vs. CV and has almost 700 yards so far (three times more than the next best RB in the Pacific) and he MISSED one game. He's a HELL of a talent. Guess which game he missed? You got it...the SF game. I said before SF would still beat Burroughs with #22 in the game, but the result would've been MUCH different...trust me! Out of Burroughs 50 offensive plays he had 34 carries and 2 receptions for a total of 36 touches. 36! He racked up 167 of Burroughs' 199 yards accounting for 84% of his team's offense. 84%! HE is the Dietrich Riley of Burroughs offense. Imagine if SF played a team from a higher division without their best player, what do you think would happen? Exactly.

As good as he is though, Muir did an EXCELLENT job to contain him. He had 127 yards on 34 carries which comes out to 3.7 yards a carry...damn good job! And had our offense played better he would have been limited to much less.

Secondly, as we have mentioned on this blog before comparing scores is only ONE aspect of comparing teams. Using that method your claim that SF would "destroy" Muir "period" also means that SF will "destroy" Bishop Amat this week..."period!" Why do I say that? Here's why:

Muir- 16
Diamond Ranch- 6

Bishop Amat- 17
Diamond Ranch- 6

So according to the scores Muir and Amat are equal and according to you SF would "destroy" Muir, right? Well congrats on this Friday's BLOWOUT Knights...well at least according to our friend The Realhsfbfan.

Miguel,

Don't let Freddie J corrrect you on the blog like that! Ask him about his CONSTANT use of the grammitcally incorrect term "should of" instead of "should've." Lol...Anyhow, you weren't the only one who walked away from Muir unimpressed. However, you must admit that you were "not impressed" with Muir's OFFENSE, not the entire team. Bro, you KNOW their D is LIGHT'S OUT!!! They controlled the game and put the clamps on #22. NOT ONE school has been able to really pass on us, Oaks Christian included, and we have been absolutely SHUTTING DOWN the run. Two really good backs, the DR and Burroughs' backs, couldn't establish much of anything and were limited to less than four yards a carry. This defense is legit!

Now the offense on the other hand, needs some work...a lot of work. Howard is wrong, the offense is certainly sputtering. All of the talent and potential is there, but the fact that it hasn't gelled yet is beyond disconcerting...especially at the half way point. The bottom line is that once they do begin to click, and truthfully there is no guarantee of that, they will be a VERY strong team that will battle for a title. If they don't they won't go further than the semi round. I'll get more into the offense later.

As far as the fracas that broke out after the game...well I blame Burroughs AND the refs. With NO timeouts left and after Muir earned a first down with the clock counting down under 10 seconds, the linebacker from Burroughs (I believe #34) completely LEVELED Muir's UNEXPECTING guard (#60) as the QB was taking a knee. It was BRUTAL and TOTALLY uncalled for. It was the cheapshots of all cheapshots, and the refs should have ejected the kid REGARDLESS of how much time was on the clock. Had they done that I'm sure you wouldn't have had the jawing that went on during the handshake and everyone would've been ok. But because the refs didn't control the situation I'm sure some unfortunate things were said during the handshake which eventuall led to the exchange. Fortunately, order was restored, thanks to the Muir coaches and everyone went their seperate ways.

Chris dunlap is a good player but # 23 is a key factor in the offense.# 23 has the most touchdowns and keeps getting first downs m.I dont think it is the offensive of coor fault the team is not scoring. He calls the plays but the players have to catch the balls and cut down on the penalites. The passing game is there and the players justg have to make plays. Do not blame coaching on dropped balls !

I was very discouraged at what I witnessed friday night at the Alhambra/South El Monte football game.I was expecting a very good game but yet seen a very disappointing one-SEM was quick-hard hitting and AGGRESIVE while the "no"-MOORS had "NOTHING" to offer as a team,COACHING STAFF or football scheme.I left in the 3rd quater with 7 minutes left and was thinking in my car what was the Moors coaching staff thinking the play calling was "pop warner-ish",the SEM staff seem to know everything the Moors where going to run.Im not going to go on and on bottom line THE "no"-MOORS are to small- not talented enough and have "no shot" at the playoffs.Players were getting kicked out of the game and "NO-ONE" got in thier face on the sidlines and said a word to those kids.It looks like a looooong ..loOOOOONG SEASON coming for the (4th/5th) best team in the Almont this year..good luck!! Justafan

1.)San Gabriel
2.)Schurr
3.)Bell Gardens
4.)or 5.)Montebello/Alhambra (Im not sure here)
6.)Kepple

you got it wrong, nowhere do I say I don't believe TC can win. In fact, I state exactly what I feel we must do to win.

it is a simple matter of fact that comparing preleague record and performance, M-town is the RHL's strongest team - at this point. To go into Friday's game thinking otherwise would be foolish.

Love the guys who keep putting down Arcadia. Just adds juice . Keep it up , Arcadia-haters. Where is the comment from Ocat

Thomas is not the same player as last year. Campbell should play tailback EASY!!!!

Miguel, what goes on in your head? Your impressed with an Acadia who just beat the two worst teams in there league and probably won't make the playoffs this year.

Anonymous said:

Goldenarm,

That is pretty disappointing that you don't believe TC will win. We've got a pretty strong defense that is getting better. Even though we are the underdogs, we will win it in the upset of the week. Prediction: TC 24 M-town 17

I really hope that teams like Rosemead, Monrovia, St. Frances, SEM, Muir, and Arcadia do well in the play offs. I get tired of the other side of town thinking that they have such better football. Good luck guys this is when it counts and I hope to see Rosemead vs San Dimas and let them know what is up!

If you take a cruise down Huntington Drive, you have miles of blue TITAN signs hanging on the light poles. The SM folks deserve to be proud of their FB team's start this season.

However, this coming Friday the action will be the other direction - head east down Huntington Drive....and this week the games count in the RHL.

Matt - I still say La Canada plays a role in the outcome this year, as a spoiler at the minimum.

TC may be overmatched Friday against M-town, but at least we are coming in on a win and with some improvements made. The way MW has been running and Bueno playing smart fball, the Cats are the team to beat in the RHL, not San Marino.
The question for me is can TC produce offense against the best defensive team in the RHL? If we can move the ball and get first downs, we have a shot. If we go 3 and out and keep forcing our D back on the field - Monrovia will make it ugly for us, big time ugly.

Goldenarm said:

ROSEMEAD is very good. They do nothing fancy on offense, putting a man in motion is a trick play for them. They swarm on defense. They could have beaten SH, which would have shocked folks, but the game they played is enough to show what the Mead kids are capable of.

Once the Mead stops turning it over, look out CIF.

Goldenarm,

I agree with you on the fact that LaSalle is one of those teams that are, for the most part, pretty sportsmanlike. There were a few complaints, but not many. I could see some LS players picking TC players up after dogpiles on plays! hahah

St. Francis should beat Amat this week, if they stay focused, and get healthy. MaxPreps and the Star News should cover that game. It'll be a good one. Along with St. Francis vs. Crespi, the following week.

Congrats SM! I knew that SM would pull out in the end. I hope they can grab the league title this year! Good luck against South Pas titans!

Miguel, kudos "to San Marino and its coaching staff for winning the chess game," but let's give some credit to the SM players on execution! GO TITANS!!!

st. francis crused el rancho without starters reilly and king and used the whole bench by the third quarter. watched the bishop amat diamond ranch game and not impresses with bishop amat. st francis should beat them

Bob Anon said:

Let us not forget that St. Francis scored some points in garbage time against Crescenta Valley, so the 27-13 score was closer than that.

Obviously SF is likely the best team out there, but let's not crown them yet. Look at Oklahoma and Georgia, for instance.

TITANFAN said:

I think 4 interceptions, 6 turnovers.

Goldenarm said:

Anyone who attended the SEM/Moor game please break down some details.

SM/SG - - San Gabriel apparently had 6 interceptions???? Is this true??

sstress said:

I saw the Muir game and Miguel is right! The Muirs defense has been winning the games for muir (with plenty of help from #55 Fernando Aguilar)...and that is scary becuase they had so many false starts. The offense needs to wake up and join the rest of the team. BTW, the Burbank Burroughs lack class, what a bunch of sore losers.

huh? said:

What KnightFan said is a great point. Without an extremely strong running game, the golden knights still dominated utilizing Malik Speed who had 2 receiving touchdowns and an impressive upcoming junior in Austin Nieves who also had a rushing touchdown.

KnightFan said:

Correction, SF did not play the bench against CV.

KnightFan said:

One thing I would like to point out about SF...They destroyed El Rancho without Dietrich Riley and Evan King who left early in the first quarter with a toe injury. This team has a lot of weapons. The entire second half was played with the bench, just as they did against Burroughs, Arcadia and CV. SF is definitely number 1 in the area. The upcoming Bishop Amat game may be one of the best games of the year.

Mr.GoodKatt said:

Miguel you are right about Muir right now they really need to play better, but you will have to eat your words about the stangs come late November when the'll be ranked #1 in your polls and the only team in the area deep into the playoffs

Miquel,

you ask about Ruckle?
Max had multiple 200 yard rushing games on JV last year. He probably had 250 against the Moors.

This season, he had maybe 4 carries prior to Friday's game.
His running style is a perfect match in the backfield with J Stew.

The main difference was a slight adjustment and MAJOR practice commitment by the O-line, Max would tell you...that is where his 197 yds game from.

stang fan said:

ya true but we will be ok if we have dunlap at rb or switch him more often.
if we can get our running game going theres no way we can be stop wayy to many weapons only thing hurting us is the penalties that killing our drives!
our defense is huge right now!
early score muir 20- burbank 10

I don't know what is going on with the offensive coordinator at Muir but he needs to stop playing #23 he is not a good quarterback. Jaron Williams #10 is a way better quarterback. Coach Howard should step up and tell the offensive coordinator look this is my team I am the Head coach play #10 at quarterback no questions asked. If #10 doesn't start for the remaining league games Muir is going to have problems. Stop being a selfish coach and play #10 at quarterback. Also before I finish what is wrong with you not playing Chris Dunlop at running back he should be your offensive star not #23 he is not even close to an athlete like Chris Dunlop. CHANGE OFFENSIVE COORDINATORS NOW OR YOU WILL STRUGGLE.

Goldenarm said:

Beating La Salle feels good, but not that good.

With no "visitor" side, you sometimes sit right next to your enemy in the stands. He yells " Go Rettig" you yell "Go Rams". I soon start thinkin about throwing the guy an elbow...he asks if I want some of his tri-tip, then his wife offers up a blanket because I left my jacket in the car. What the hell?? OOOps, sorry. They love their team...but don't seem to particularly hate yours...though winning is all that fills their mind.

Even the pre-game prair...a sweet teenage voice on the PA assures you that God's insurance policy will extend to Rams as well....

You read about fistfights, taunting and player ejections...then you have this. La Salle is a posterboard good place for athletics and kids.

The coaches made some good moves last week and the kids responded. Our blowout of Arroyo via the air in game 1, hurt us way more than it helped.

The depth chart is officially burned...everybody is a starter now. Good luck in league play to the La Salle Lancers.

Wow, with a little change on the O-line and a change at running back, Temple City finally showed there is life. It's too bad that it took Backus 17 games to realize that Mooney's run, run, run offense was the best fit for TC. As much as he loves giving his QB a shot to shine, he has to realize that after a season and a half, Hatch isn't a Peyton Manning. Hopefully the RBs continue to get 30+ carries (total) so that TC gets back into winning form.

Good looking out, Fred. I saw it when I got home. Made the changes from the treo phone. I'm starting to like these company phones.

Miguel, u still up, fix your headlines, Monrin and Arcaida

Miguel Melendez said:

Hey Hal,

I asked Howard if the offense is sputtering and he said it's not, that the offense just needs to get on the same page. I think it sputtered last week and this week. It could also be a case of Muir playing "down" to Burroughs' level. I expected more out of Muir, but I suspect they'll get it going soon.

Zeke Prado said:

Bobby i went 14-3 and your upset of the week, didn't have a chance. The streak lives on. MK.

San Marino played a heck of a game. A couple trick plays and capitalized on turnovers.

Hal Lamaster said:

I'm not surprised...
by Burroughs' lack of class.

I did think Muir would get the offense in gear this week. 13 points was what I expected as a first quarter output.

The next few weeks are going to be very interesting. Burbank, Arcadia and CV await the Mustangs.

The Stang Fan- what's your assessment of the Mustangs play so far. I know a win is a win, but they seem out of sync. They didn't look great against Glendale, they look like they sputtered but held on against Burroughs.

Athletically they are superior to all of the teams in league. They have scored 18 points and 13 points in their first 2 league games. Something's a miss.

Hal Lamaster said:

I've read a lot about Todd Golper and was excited to see him in action tonight for the first time. He is a STUD. A torpedo on defense. And he wasn't too shabby on offense either. Good game by Arcadia. They looked like a playoff team tonight. The road will get tougher though.

Miguel Melendez said:

I don't know that they should have done something but they should their presence should have been felt.

The weird part to me was that they weren't even anywhere near the field. They were at the entrance near the parking lot.

the real hsfbfan said:

Mig,

Btw, pasadena PD should have done something, right? Tax payers pay good money for the police to ensure safety. I just hope they werent making time and a half, if so, i am disgusted.

Miguel Melendez said:

Yep, real hsfbfan,

It was pretty intense. But I gotta give props to Kenny Howard and Antyone Sims for keeping their cool and restoring order.

I'm blaming Burroughs straight up.

Anyway, I'm hungry and I'm really not digging listening to the police scanner or Everybody Loves Raymond here in the office. Gonna grab some In-N-Out and make it a blockbuster night. I'll paint the town tomorrow night in Pasadena. I'm out.

the real hsfbfan said:

OOOO my Mig, can't believe that stuff went down at muir game. Glad to hear you are alright.

You know, Burroughs has to beat arcadia or burbank now to make the playoffs. That won't be easy.

Miguel Melendez said:

Stang Fan,

You got a touchdown taken away because one of your guys was called on a holding. It was a holding. I was there on the sideline. The refs don't hate you, trust me. You hurt yourselves in the game with the nine penalties for nearly 90 yards.

Bob said:

Muir 13 Burroughs 10

St. Francis 30 Burroughs 5

If St. Francis played Muir right now, I would have to give St. Francis the edge. The thing that will really show us how good St. Francis is, is when SF plays Bishop Amat. If SF can handle this team, then I believe Muir will definately have a lot of trouble with St. Francis.

bingo looks over because he gets the fake call/real call we mostly run nascar or indy fast pace no huddle i know it dont look at it but we do.
i hope myles goes somewhere he really is good, suppposledy standford coming to watch tyree #4 next week vs burbank.
i think mitchall # 7 is out for 2 weeks from what i heard.
jaron is a AWSOME PLAYER!
we should of beat this team by a lot more but refs always hate us took 4 tds in the last 2 games from us whatever a win a win!

Miguel Melendez said:

Hey real hsfbfan,

I hear you on firing up the arcadia fans in the stands. They need to know it's a FOOTBALL GAME!!! The same can be said about other schools, Muir and Alhambra included.

I agree, SM and Monrovia will play for the league title. Arcadia over Pasadena next week. The Bulldogs won big but lets be honest, it was against (yawn) Hoover.

rabbit5 said:

dang alhambra? what happened?

justafan must not be happy.....

the real hsfbfan said:

Mig,

Arroyo getting shut out by LC has to be the lowest point in their program history. Arroyo has always been solid. Muir not handling Burroughs just proves that they wouldnt beat SF and SF shall stay #1. NO MORE TALK about SF v Muir, the case is closed. SF would destroy Muir .Period. Alhambra is a HUGE a disapointment this 2008 season. Glendale stuck it to them that first game and they never recovered. Rosemead playing SH close was a surprise. Arcadia should move up in the polls. San Marino, wow? Monrovia v. SM for Rio title.

i have to pick arcadia over pasadena next week. Even though PHS beat hoover soundly, i don't think they got better. I need fire up the arcadia fans in the stands. They are boring! It's a football game please scream and yell.

the real hsfbfan said:

The return of Todd Golper helped the apaches beat glendale. He accounted for all 3 TDS. You can tell he was still hurting, but nothing was gonna stop him. He's the difference maker. Damn, what a hell of a kid. UCLA....You are LUCKY! Rambeau aka "First Blood" played lights out along with that new kid at running back. Rambeau hits so hard he makes QB think twice about throwing his way. QB's... If you hang a ball, he will knock your receivers teeth out. I like his style, and he would make a good college DB. Raspa #5 should take credit with Park#4. Arcadia secondary looked stout.

Apaches looked strong and their playoff chance just got better.

Bob Anon said:

Is LC improving, or is Arroyo regressing? I think it's both.
