So what's wrong with Pasadena this season?

| | Comments (46) |

I know, Pasadena is coming off a 51-6 win over Hoover, but lets be honest, it's Hoover!

If not for Hoover in the Pacific League opener there's a good chance the Bulldogs start the season 0-5.

Coach Kevin Mills is not much of a talker. For example, when I asked him about the assessment of his team Mills said, "All I'm gong to say is stay tuned."

Mills is in his fifth year at Pasadena and has compiled a 17-30 record through Week 5. The Bulldogs (1-4, 1-1) offense can't seem to get it together.

Mills said near the start of the season that he finally had the depth Pasadena has lacked over the years, but the Bulldogs fared better in '07 and '06.

The lineup experimentation has led to a 30-19 loss to Arroyo Valley; a 51-12 loss to Saugus; a 36-0 loss to Long Beach Jordan and a 35-14 loss to Burbank to open league play two weeks ago. Pasadena is averaging 19 points per game but giving up nearly 32 points per game.

No doubt the Bulldogs lost some good talent: six starters lost to graduation including Tyron Crockom who now is at Western Missouri.

But Pasadena returned five starters from last year's team that went 7-5 and finished third in league with a 5-2 record.

Senior tailback JQuan Hamilton, senior wide receiver Joseph Jackson, senior linemen Justin Jones, junior linemen Anthony Boykins and junior linemen Chris Connell all returned this season.

Hamiton has shown signs of brilliance on the field, such as when he showed nice moves to go with with his breakaway speed. He went 59 yards for a touchdown to close the gap, 10-7, against Arroyo Valley. Isaiah MacKlin had a good defensive game that day, recovering a fumble and recording 1 1/2 sacks. Josh Desmuke completed 9 of 16 passes for 114 yards, but to no avail.

Against Saugus, Pasadena's offense struggled as two errant lateral passes led to 10 first-quarter points for the Centurions, and its running game finished the first half with only 33 yards on the ground to go with only three first downs.

Then came the debacle against Long Beach Jordan. The Bulldogs failed to record a first down, didn't complete a pass and had minus-9 yards of total offense. Pasadena's defense gave up 278 yards.

"I think to everybody's knowledge, we lost quite a bit, but I like our chances in the Pacific League," said Mills before the start of the season. "I'm not going to put anybody ahead of us. We have just as good a chance as anybody."

Pasadena's record over the last four years:

2007: 7-5 overall, 5-2 league
2006: 5-5 overall, 2-2 league
2005: 3-7 overall, 2-3 league
2004: 1-9 overall, 1-4 league

Pasadena has steadily improved since Mills took over in 2004. But things look to be on the decline this season and with with a talented team the question is, why?

Huckster,
Hopefully your right and nothing happened. However the way the story is being told is after the Arcadia game many players and coaches were very frustrated and there was some altercations with the PHS players. These particular parents came over to the bus this see what was going on because the situation seemed out of control. The parents questioned coach Mills about the situation and that's when it was said he went off. It is also being said Mills is admitting to the altercation with these parents. Huckster you have expressed your opinion on the matter but have given no facts. This is your brother so just ask him if it happened and come back and state if it did or did not.

Kevin is not going to say anything to a parent, because he is a professional educator! Now, if a parent gets in his face, then he will defend him self and if a parent becomes threatening to a point of bodily harm he will most defiantly strike to protect him self! What would he have to say to a parent after a game? Nothing!

Anon, I’m doing the math and these people are little cowards doing the “Pile on Thing”! You weaklings are an embarrassment to the human race! Oh, and if some one attacks my bro all hell is to be paid! Take that anyway you want!!!! Tell the man of the house to keep his woman in check, because every man doesn’t have to accept her abuse that he enjoys. I know he would not curse a parent out of the blue, unless he was attacked first! Where is the police on all this stuff?

I just got finish reading the 2nd part or your post. If any of this is true which I'm REALLY hoping is fabrication, We have a SERIOUS PROBLEM on our hands. With so much tension centered around this coach, there could be a situation where someone gets attacked. Possibly in the name of self-defense. Not only the child protecting his mother, but the husband defending his wife. If someone out there is doing this as a way of macking a mockery of the coach. like my mother use to say "it's certain things you just don't play with" I will say this. I do think something is going to happen to bring this whole situation to a head. Somebody is going to feel like they have to take matters into their own hands. I'm hoping that happens in a professional matter, if not...............

I'm just say'in said:

You will see less and less 2 sport lettermen in the future. With the new CIF rules of very little if any dead periods for basketball coaches they can now demand a kid make a choice of which sport he will play. I already know of basketball coaches that have told kids to commits to football or basketball and if the sport is football don’t bother coming out for basketball. Now if you’re Binns a 6’3, 6’4 supreme athlete you can play both sports as both coaches know they need that kind of talent to win. Other lesser talents are subject to the coach. If the coach decides he might be able to win without the kid the coach can take a lesser talent to spite the kid for playing another sport. Or if the coach knows he’s not going to win with or without the kid he might not let him play to make an example out of him. CIF has lost control of basketball to AAU so they are trying anyway possible to get it back. I don’t know if Tucker is making stands like that but CIF sure has given him along with other bball coaches the authority too.

Question to anyone. After the Arcadia game I hear Mills openly cursed out a players parents. I’m told Mills repeatedly called the players mother a b-tch in front of the kid. And what’s worst the players father happens to be a pastor. Is this true? If so, there you have what’s wrong with Pasadena football and the PUSD. Teachers and or coaches have no respect and are not accountable so why would we expect our students to be accountable or have respect for anyone? I hope this is not true but this story is circulating in the community.

Quit being so sensitive. My statement about Binns was a response to your statement. Thank you for clearing that up. The kids need to follow his example and inquire about the recruiting process. Stop using that old pathetic line of the White Coach. Merit is what is looked at when considering a leader. This country is looking at a man of color to take the highest lead on the face of this planet. As a man of color I resent you for saying that. We are living in a time when it is individual and the fact that this coach has failed for what ever reason is his own. Race is NOT the issue. You make some very good points, I just wish you could keep your emotions out of it. Name calling is a sign of weakness. You do the math.

Anon:10/18/08

When you hide using your "Anon" I can't really respect you with that type of cowardism! You talk about Armon Binns, but his daddy had a son go to Tennessee and he knew about the whole recruiting process. Tucker couldn't pull the same stuff on him and his son, that he pulls on the other parents. I think we need a “White” coach, because all the African Americans would believe and fall in line as assumed! I hate to say it, but it is what it is! Help can be used by the Pasadena program by us all that are Dogs!

Hal Lamaster said:

Do you think the Bulldogs' ugly uniforms have anything to do with their demise? ;)

You made some very good points. However some of them I would call into question. If I remember 2years ago the bulldogs best player (Armon Binns) was also a stater on the C.I.f championship basketball team and based on your theory, there's no reason Tucker would have risked one of his star players to the football team.
Not to say when it comes to your statement made about total commitment. maybe Tucker wants his players totally commited to his program, especially if they're winning. This conspiracy theory is questionable. Wouldn't any AD want all of his sports programs to do well? It would reflect favoably on him. They won a title in volley ball and he was right there just as proud as he was when they cut down the nets. As for as the issue with the parents and the lack of football knowledge. Most of the players come from single parent homes, and the majority of them are women. Their interest in the games is primarly as a spectator. Their biggest hope is that a role model who is responsible and mature, can guide their child in a direction that is beneficial. The remark you made about the coach i'll assume is correct since you know him better than any of us. The only thing I have as a difference of opinion is accountability. The number of hours spent preparing for games allows for details to be gone over and over. putting the kids in game situations helps the kids to see in practice that if they do something they were not assigned to do not only hurts themselves but the team also. If you have a coach who you stated is not trusting than that attitude would be picked up by the players and the domino affect would start from there. Aside from that it's good to see that you're hopeful, as the rest of us should be who are a part of this school. I think we all should look within and see what we can do to help fix this problem. one man didn't make this problem and more than one man or woman is needed to help fix it.

Huck,

You seem to know everything that is going wrong with PHS football, first hand. I admire you by not being PC in this situation. Something needs to be done at PHS to restore pHS football.

Huckster!!!!! said:

What’s worng with “PASADENA FOOTBALL”? Well there is a combination of things and I’ll try to give a couple of them;
1. There are a lot of parents that don’t have a clue about “FOOTBALL”! What I mean about that is that once your kid commits to the sport and program he has to be fully committed and not half asses it! This means you can’t go grocery shopping with your Mom during practice time and Mom wanting to scold the coach, because he having a fit with the issue! Don’t plan your vacations during football time if your son is really committed and I’m not talking about a couple of days.
2. The administration has to be committed to the head coach to get what he needs to be successful. Now at Pasadena High School this is a little problem, because Dr. Evans is a winner and committed to just that! On every level possible! The AD on the other hand is not on that page, because he (Tony Brooks) doesn’t care about anything but basketball and that being successful. Brooks to go along with Tucker is just too selfish “African American” that are a bunch of jealous little girls! They want the campus to them selves and be the only winners with all the pats on the backs. 95% of the Basketball players should be playing football, but Mr. Tucker doesn’t allow them to pursue that dream! He undercover threatened the kids by telling them if they play football they would not have their spot back to almost not playing at all! This is just wrong, because the kids are supposed to have all kinds of opportunities. I know these people, so it is what it is! I back everything up and willing to do it in their face!
3. Kevin is his own enemy when it comes to this thing called coaching. He doesn’t have that team concept, because he trust no one! In football, if you don’t trust you are usually unsuccessful! Football is all about trust! He hires coaches that he can control, whether they know anything or not. He scares his troops to the point that, they can’t perform at max level! These are kids that need to be built up with a stern hand. These Kids are not like “Ikner” or “Trump” who were fabulous football players at PHS. You didn’t have to teach them anything, because they knew more than the coach! Believe it! Kevin has to be open to his staff he hired, because the head man can’t see everything and that’s, that!
4. The kids have to be accountable for their on the field play too, because a lot of the times the coaches tell them exactly where to go and they do something else. It’s just like at home, when you tell your kids to do something and they find a way to do some other things. They have to be more focus and once again committed!

I'm a true Dog and I just gave you a little on what's wrong, but great things await us! BELIEVE!!!!! I DO!!!!

Okay,Stangs03 enough!!

You may own PHS on the football field, BUT JOHN MUIR will never/has never competed against PHS in the most important factor EDUCATION....YOU wish they would change the name on Sierra Madre, maybe then there would be a graduating class of more than 300 for the blue & gold......

As for the "problem" at PHS, whatever mills needs as far as coaches & staff to turn the program around, the administration should be behind him. From what I've seen over the last 4+ years, there is a severe lack of discipline/authority/respect and not only on the football field, but in the classroom as well. All this translates into the success and/or failure of academic and sporting programs at a school..

Im routing for pasadena to be the 2nd best team in the pacific league. Does PHS make costly mistakes?? Yes they do and it usually costs them to lose a game. I think its not just up to the coaches but also the kids to be focused and determined and come together to reach the common goal which is win!!!! I believe Coach mills even though sometimes extravagent with tryin to get the kids motivated is a good coach and the record in league shows it. I want the city of pasadena to be a city with more than one talented h.s. Muir, blair, marshall and phs. I see all the time guys in high school that you can look and tell that they're football players, but theres no motivation. I heard a kid from phs tell another student, "Man I quit the team, I couldnt deal with it anymore, it felt like a freakin job" So everyone wants to say thats its because private schools take all the good athletes, that is not necessarily true. Partially true but not all the way. Some of the kids just arent motivated to play, but have the skill. There is no reason why PHS&Muir cant go to the east and take out some teams in the east sgv

I know Kevin Mills on a personal level as well as his family. He is committed to the students at PHS as well as his family. He is a good man - I just don't think that people "get him" at times. He needs a better support unit helping him coach at PHS. Whether the team does great or not this season - I can say that Mills is committed to the team and the school.

One of the primary problems at the Pasadena public schools is apathy. There is a tremendous talent base that refuses to get involved in sports. Poor facilities, lack of parental and community support and no coaching consistency. The facilities at the public schools compared to the private is absurded. The kids deserve better and better equiptment and surroundings might encourage a sense of pride.

Mills is a good quarterback coach and teaches discipline. Needs a good assistant coach with solid experience to work in tandem with him for better structure. Don't give up yet, he's dedicated and hard working and will soon reap the benefits of experience.

If you read the front of the Star News today - more programs for PUSD are being cut. That includes after school programs, teachers, etc. If your family is fortunate to send their child to a private school - or to a school in a different district, you do it. If you have to stay within PUSD then you make the choices of where your child goes. The glory days of PUSD are long gone.

I think also it's coaching styles. Some coaches have a very "upfront" type style of coaching - while others are more along the lines of "Coach Wooden" I think you do what is best for your child and choose the school accordingly.

Reyes bro, I see the point you are trying to make. We all see it, but it a requires a lot more work than isnecessary. Check your grammar, spelling, and sentence structure before posting. I almost popped an advil after reading your commment.

@ sfhs92 you make a good point. Same thing happens to Muir, and Monrovia. Private schools have been pulling that for years. Can't help it if public school systems lack in educational strength. I look at LB Poly and they have a strong curriculum down there, so of course most of the kids and parent choose them. Plus the fball player know they are going to be able to compete every year. It works hand in hand. Muir needs that same type of reputation. PHS as well I suppose. But as always I will never support the Bulldogs. Even if they changed the name on the school to Muir!

you know what I believe PHS' problem is. It is the fact that most of the top athletes from Sierra Madre for the most part go to private schools like SF, La Salla and Loyola. There are a lot of talented athletes that come out of that area.
