....Star Picks....This is why I'm (not) hot

Star-News preps writer Keith Lair and I will be going head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the "Star Picks" thread.
Melendez: Last week: 12-3; Overall: 86-36
Lair: Last week: 12-3; Overall: 96-26
Notes: I don't understand how Keith is 10 up on me, but my 3-7 start in Week 0 didn't help at all. I'll take solace in that I've had 626 football knowledge only three months compared to Keith's 10 years-plus. My wrong picks were: Duarte (whooped by Azusa); St. Francis (whooped by Crespi); and Alhambra (lost to Montebello). Keith's wrong picks were: Duarte, Alhambra and Bell Gardens (lost to San Gabriel).
This week: Two very good games this week that pop out right away are Crescenta Valley at Muir and San Gabriel vs. Alhambra. The former will decide the Pacific League title. But after watching Muir at its best, the vote here goes to the Mustangs who just might be the very best team in the San Gabriel Valley. Period. It's homecoming at Moor Field. (I wonder what they'll think of this alumni?). The edge here goes to the Matadors who have an established running attack, something Alhambra has severely lacked since the departure of Brown & Smith. I had a really hard time picking Temple City over South Pasadena. The nod almost went to the Tigers but I went with the probably outcome, though that game will be close, me thinks.

So I've heard, I have family that played on the CIF teams, so I hear about all the time. Plus talking to Coach Shell, Crutch, as well as others, I have a pretty vivid image of how it was. Nothing like the real thing I am sure.
As far as the Dogg, becoming dominate again, I honestly can see that happening for a long time to come. Now I don't know the level of talent they possess, but it can't compare to last years when they were looked decent and went further in CIF than Muir. But hey, I hope the best for Dogg Pound, I wouldn't mind a tense rivarly on the gridiron. With BBall, yea I cant really say anything, I dont know where the hoopers are these days. Coach Tuck is amazing. I woulda loved to played for him, except he coached the Dogs, and blue and gold runs in my veins. He gets all the respect in the world, and knows what he is doing. Coach Moore was that to Muir. Maybe we can get a coach who can attract some talent, or the kids in the area, just get better. 2001 was our year, we couldn't capitalize. Clovis West, CV, The Dogs, back to back to back... NO BUENO!!! 18-0 up to that point. We should have beaten Clovis West that year, FREE THROWS!!!!!! sorry I had a flash back... Wish all the best to the Dogs, see you in the bowl!!!
TC champs,
that sucks. I went there way back in 1980 when I knew one of the original owners and returned many times. We had to buzz cows off the dirt runway to land, knocking rivets out of the wings of the Cessna 152, the place was paradise and a total adventure. I woke up one morning with a bat stuck on my head, tangled in my hair, still a favorite memory every time my buddies and I head south. Tequila is definitely a weapon of mass destruction.
I know the various panga services still book and launch out of Bahia De La Ventana. Some of it has gone too commereesh...but being the last isle in the Sea of Cortez, the fishing can be phenomenal.
Stang03
The fact you were born in 85' shows you missed a true rivalry. it was like the media trying to tell viewers about the Lakers and Celtics.
I know things are lopsided and have been that way for a loooooooooong time. But to those of us 40 and over. We truly know what the tussles all about. From the parade down Lincoln to the Drummers playing non-stop until the game was finished. This WAS high school football at it's best.
Muir has many reasons to gloat but I tell you this. Once HS gets the right guy in place you guys are going to pay for 20+years of frustration.
The feeling on that campus is reflected in the way we stick it to you guys in B-Ball and knowing that we have the atheletes there to get it done. All i'll say is it's coming very soon! so enjoy.
Sorry Goldenarm, but I think Las Arenas is cerrado.
LMAO!!
I was being sarcastic in saying I'd leave for the weekend in observance of my EX-gf's b-day...I'll be at the Rose Bowl ready for the Tussle. As far as vacationing, I won't be leaving for Puerto Rico until summer of next year.
Beat Muir this year, would be greatest upset of all time in PHS Bulldog football History!!!
No if or But about it!!!
But we got Mills coaching PHS!!
So forget about it!!! BullDog Nation!!!
Remember one word MILLS!!!
good to see we talkin tussle already!
I stand corrected. Hell, I wasn't born until '85 anyway. In overall victories its a landslide tho... not even close.
PHS need Tip Sanders, bottom line... or Huckster...
Huckster, where are you in all this madness. Its been a while since you last post.
From 1954 to 1961 Muir was 8 and 0 against PHS. From 1962 to 1983 PHS was 17 and 5 against Muir in the Turkey Tussle. Since 1983 Muir is 24 and 1 against PHS.
Stang Fan,
whatever happened to the big lineman that supposedly was a late arrival to Stangland...joining the team as the season begun. Did he break the starting lineup and exactly what kind of size we talking about? somebody was saying 280 range?
Stangs03,
The sixties? Nah bro, Hal Lam is right, this current streak began in the 80's. Although Muir had its other streak in the 50's and 60's, phs had their way with us in the 70's. It is really odd that Miguel would be out on the last day of the regular season with some pretty big games out there. That's alright though Miguel, Cabo will do that to you. Have one on me brotha!
Hal Lam,
Great post! As usual.....
I remember sitting in the Rose Bowl in 1976 and watching Muir beat PHS 13-10. It was Muir's first win over the Bulldogs in 9 years. I got chills. Once the mid-80's came the Tussle turned into a Blue and Gold celebration each year.
There have been good games along the way when PHS has a stud or two or three (McAlister, etc.) Last year was a good contest, but more often than not it is a blow out.
Last year on this blog, PHS fan(atics) wrote about Muir being washed up and there being a changing of the guard at the top of the league. There has been a change, but it has been Pasadena heading south in the standings. And when the dust settles it will still be the Mustangs on top, standing alone.
Miguel,
Did I just read you are going to Cabo the day of the Tussle? What type of madness is that about. G/F b-day... How rude, StangFan and myself extended a cordial invitation to the Rock the Halls celebration, and you flaking due to some quality time with your g/f????? I guess I can be totally upset, Drawls do come before (foot)balls. But my friend you have a lot making up to do... I expect nothing less than full coverage the entire week about the storied rivarly, and a bottle of Cabo Wabo Tequila. StangFan said the rivalry is one-sided right NOW, hell its been one-sided since the 60's... lol... but really it is quite the experience. Who will be covering in your absence my friend?
Miquel,
If you are going to party Cabo is cool. However, if you want to fish, come 150 miles back north to Hotel Las Arenas (88 miles south of La Paz)....this is where the pescados grandotes live. Pez Gallo(roosterfish), wahoo, sailfish, huge pargo, and yellowfin tuna outside on the 88 fathom bank. You can see Marlin fin from your hotel room window!
It is in the middle of nowhere, so it is BOB, bring your own babe.
GA
Thank you Hal.....actually losing to Torrance was a great way to celebrate 100 years of mediocrity! At least the championship trophies from '64 got dusted off.
Anonymous,
Mills is the worst coach EVER? Hold on now, his 15-24 record (on the field) isn't NEARLY as bad as some of the coaches in the past? Is it? Okay...it's damn close, but he still isn't the worst.
Wow PHS is way down and without Laflora and Jackson who has been out for what now 3or 4 weeks it is no hope for the dogs. the coaches have no faith in there players and the team looks like a pop warner football team THANKS COACH MILLS !!!!!! Your team and coaching staff is the worst in history WHAT A QUARTER BACK
Sorry burbanksports, I forgot to mention the "Battle for the Bottom"- Burbank vs. Hoover.
This was the match up you guys needed to have when you celebrated your 100th anniverary on September 13. A big win over Hoover would have sent all of those alumni home happy.
Even with the coaching situation at Burbank you guys should be licking your chops at the opportunity to play the Tornadoes. Pasadena, a team you beat, dropped 51 on Hoover.
I feel a win coming your way on Thursday.
Stang Fan,
Your comment is now up on the other thread. Nice comment.
Yes, I'm taking the day off. In observance of my ex-gf's birthday I'm spending the weekend in Cabo San Lucas. I'll find a way to keep busy down there.
Miguel,
What? You joking? You've got to be joking....
Btw, one of my posts was "swallowed" by the system again over in the "Pick a name thread." I hate when that happens!
I'm taking the day off Friday, Nov. 14.
Miguel,
As far as the GOTY week goes, I think it should probably go to SG/Alhambra or SF/SP. Of course I'd like to see my Stangs on the cover once again, but the reality is I'd prefer the Week 10 matchup of the Tussle to be the GOTY that week.
If you choose the Muir/CV game this week and decide not to choose the Tussle to be leading the story in Week 10 because you think Muir has garnered too much Page 1 ink, then I hope you choose against us this week. It has long been a tradition in the PSN to pump up the Tussle ALL WEEK and to have it as the GOTY. I know the rivalry is one-sided right now, but the game is a HUGE event in our community. Normally the game's are played on Thursday or Saturday and don't interfere with the other Friday night games, but this year that isn't the case. I KNOW there will be some pretty important league matchups that weekend, but it would be COMPLETELY foreign to open up the PSN and see the Turkey Tussle relegated to Page 3 or 4.
Hal...how could you forget the battle for last place and the battle of the lousy coaches?
Muir's offensive awakening could mean a long night for Crescenta Valley. This game decides the league title. Go Mustangs!
Arcadia vs. Burroughs. (The battle of the Indians)- I don't see Arcadia winning the game. Too much Dominique Barnes and company.
And, if Burroughs gets close to the goal, they have a kicker that is 'money'.
Pasadena at Glendale- Two teams going in different directions this season. The Nitros still have a lot to play for.
I heard Crockum from Alhambra got injured?.. any word on his situation?..
Easy there, Reyes.
Pasadena at Glendale, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Glendale)
Melendez,
No one in PHS BullDog Nation disagree with you!!!
After talks with PHS Bulldog players they are down, down
down themself!!!Hang over loss to Arcadia can be seen at last weeks game against Burroughs.
This Team was FALT!!!
NO ENERGY!!!PHS band member has more energy then team on the field!!!
Only three games to go!!!NO PLAYOFF!!!
This got to be dumbest football in SG Valley!!!
This got dumbest Football Coach in SG Valley!!!
THANK_YOU MILLS!!!
Miquel
what would preempt you seeing San Marino versus Temple City?
It could be "300" the sequel.
that john muir jv football team is looking strong after tha win aginst the arcadia with markus # 10 scoring two rushing td's.....and t owens #22 with his one reciving td.... a big way to start the game with gary davis #23 37 yard kick return and his two catches....and a way to end the game with tremell #16 with his scoped fumble for a td......good job stangs...big game agenst CV look to dominate.....
Goldenarm, you are a wise man my friend.
Now I get your comment. And yes, I saw TC in two bad games, though I'll continue to say I expected the Rams to beat Alhambra.
As I look ahead of the rest of the football schedule, I don't see myself checking out TC again. So from here on out my opinion is based on final results, stats and what my correspondents tell me.
FYI, Be on the lookout for my Blair story in Tuesday's paper. Coach Parks has some big plans ahead and already has made an impact on the Vikings football program.
Miquel,
Read further my friend, the initial slash upon your jugular turns out only a superficial nick. I am utilizing your carcass as a tool of motivation.
The gist was the Rams need to earn what lies ahead, and this would include in the end, a higher opinion from "thee" man at PSN prep. As I stated, you saw two crap performances, though 1 was against the playoff bound Panthers. Your low opinion is backed by what your eyes saw - thus, you do have a clue. In some editorial world - I pray this makes sense, though likelihood is low.
Zeke - only possible might be a La Salle loss, sorry LS.
Last week 14-1 my sole lost was Alhambra losing to Montebello.
Bobby get your picks in.

"You have no clue whatsoever"...Geez, Goldenarm, tell me how you REALLY feel lol
I thought we were boys!
Miquel,
I would say you have no clue whatsoever, but knowing you have only seen TC against AHS and the Mead, I realize your viewpoint is warranted and deserved. Had you seen the Monrovia game you might now have a different view. Since the Mead, the Rams are a much stronger group, playing more aggressive and inspired fball.
Of course, the Rams need to prove it from here on out. The Rams should expect an aerial assault from SoPas. We will need a pass rush and good D to prevail, including awareness of screens and draws. Conora needs to challenge our D to come angry.
SoPas should expect us to run right at them, which is where our game should always have been. You are probably right, it will be a close game. Others may not, but TC respects the Tigers, whom they needed a late game kickoff return TD from Williams Do to beat last year.
