Pasadena's next coach should be ....

| | Comments (80) |

Here's a list of former head coaches who could spice up a starving football program at Pasadena High School. Time for you bloggers to have a field day.

STEVE GARRISON -- The former Wildcats football coach is currently a teacher at Monrovia High School. Talk about someone who would bring instant discipline and credibility to the Bulldogs program.

MIKE MOONEY -- The former Temple City coach and current San Marino assistant principal/assistant coach would do the same for Pasadena, though it's unclear if Pasadena would offer anywhere near the same deal Mooney probably has at San Marino High School.

TIP SANDERS -- The former Blair coach and current JV assistant knows the area well and has proven with the right help and tools can take a program into the direction it desperately wants to go.

TOM MAHER -- The former PCC football coach and current assistant at Fullerton knows the area well and has a lot of ties with Pasadena. This consideration could be entertaining at the very least.

JIM ROME -- No, not the radio/TV dude. Rome used to coach at Muir and Citrus College. Having previously coached the Mustangs, Rome probably could draw interest from players who are unsure which school to attend (though it seems Muir is running a monopoly when it comes to football).

Anyone else have suggestions?

Frankly, I am the best candidate. I am Coach Robert Grant, the Head Coach of the PHS Junior Varsity Football Team. An alumni of PHS, I played in the era when we were successful on and off the field. Pasadena High School Football is missing the heart and soul of football that I enjoyed when I graduated in 1980. I played major college football and semi-pro ball as a member of the Los Angeles Police Department. The discipline, integrity and espirt de corps developed over 20 years as a cop and a lifetime as an athlete is what PHS needs and deserves.

As for Mills' coaching abilities, I agree with you there, he rode the coat tails of two of the best players to come through pasadena in a long time, Ikner and Crockom. But take away that talent and mills was reduced to nothing.

I would never bite on that top statement, you nice youg lady....

Another question I have for you “Sweetie” is why would they remove him from football and not his teaching position? If he did all this stuff you witness? Football means nothing in the grand scheme of life!

The people who are going for the coaching job are a good bunch and should bring a lot to the table in restoring our once proud program at Pasadena High!

I hope this would be the last time I have to talk about race, but I’m a straight shooter; however I do see how things work in news papers, TV and other media outlets. What I should have pointed out was how the “Temple City Police Department” has handled the Backaus situation versus the “Pasadena Police Department” handle Mr. Mills situation. “RUSH TO JUDGMENT” is all I was pointing out! I don’t want to hear about these “OBAMA” references and “CHANGE” cause, aint a damn thang change! I know you people read and watch TV, so close your eyes and get hit in the head to hope you wake up! My eyes is wide open and I see the haters in the news and all the stickers on these cars! Fool me? NOT! I'm not going to bring it up again.....

Someone who knows and HS sports fan you guys hit the nail right on the head. However it is easy to get caught up in the rant we had yesterday when mentioning the past of the PUSD and the PSN, I know them for their works. That being said HS sports fan your right lets use race as a motivating factor and get the best person for the job. Would a Pasadena guy be ideal? Yes, but if they are not the best fit get someone who loves the game and the kids whatever race or nationality and let’s support the best person for the job.

Someone who knows, you must be close to the PUSD because you understand the dysfunction. We have people making decision who have no idea how a good sports program is run. They are ruining these programs because of personal vendetta’s and selfish pride. These ignorant administrators are trying to put square pegs in round holes. Why are there people on hiring panels who don’t know the sport their hiring for? I understand the principal has the last word but why not utilize our resources and get knowledgeable people to consult with or be on the hiring panel. Knowledgeable alumni, parents and people in the community who know what it takes for a student athlete to be successful. Then hold the PUSD to a standard that says our student deserve the best and that does not mean your friend or your friend’s friend who needs a job or the cheapest way out. Bottom line is if we demand the best from PUSD and stop accepting anything they throw at us all the schools can be at least competitive. The only way to get rid of the dysfunction is as a group hold the PUSD to a higher standard and stop going for the old oaky doke. After that we can talk head to one another cheer for our team and let the chips fall where they may.

I agree with the last several comments about getting coaches in the Pasadena schools that will establish a "Tradition". The kids deserve the best we can offer. A winnning sports program in the Pasadena schools will do more than the police to curb gangs and drugs.

Miguel it might make an excellent story to find out wht there is a coaching carousel in Pasadena Public High Schools. Thge Pasadena Private schools are churning out winning programs with half the talent base at PHS and Muir.

Also, let's not use race as a crutch but a motivating factor to improve the situation. Obama as president-elect has shown us all that anything is possible. Let's vote for "Change" in Pasadena schools too! Just my two cents!

Someone who knows said:

PUSD is completely dysfunctional. Muir should be competing for CIF titles almost every season with the talent they have had and PHS should be right behind.

Take a look at Marshall and Blair as well and why Pasadenans keep sending their kids to private and perochial schools whenver possible.

Thier secondary schools have had, for the most part, bad and/or naive administration in regards to how secondary schools need to have extracurricular and cocurricular activites need to be supported.

The district and their schools have succumbed to political correctness in many of their hiring in the last decade or so in many sports.

I understand Kieth Jones interviewed for the Muir job in the past, but they were not interested in Coach Jones's services and how a competent coach like Tip Sanders, who has had a good record at making Marshall and Blair into competitive programs during his tenure, is not a HC at this time.

Also the Eric Johnson situation was handled poorly and the PUSD lost a competent coach who made the Blair baseball team competitive before he coached the football team at Muir to its last glory days.

As long as the PUSD has too many elementary and middle school based people in its overall administration and moving these people into the HS administrations, the athletic, drama, music and other departments will suffer in their high schools; which hurts in the classroom as well.

PUSD needs to do some serious housecleaning in much of its district and secondary administrations and the parents of those students need to speak out. The underperforming of the athletic programs is a symptom of the massive dysfunction of the district.

New York said:

The hiring process (whatever committee is involved) should endure as much scrutiny as the coach receives once the season is in full swing. Fortunately, the timing of Coach Mills' resignation provides enough time for the district to get it right. Why didn't PHS select Coach Tip Sanders four years ago? Not a teacher with a college degree? Muir seems to be doing well. I'm sure somebody with Coach Garrison's qualifications may not even be truly considered because he is a not a "Pasadena Guy." Again, probably time to reconsider the tired criteria. Be willing to consider somebody based on track record rather than rhetoric and whatever may feel good at the time.

PHS should be a football powerhouse.
In my opinion, it is a top-down collapse of direction and priorities that got them where they now stand.

My parking tickets in Pasadena - could sod and fertlize the PHS field for 2 years straight. Their is money...and Dena always has talent, border to border.
The problems were at one time, simple, but seem to be complicated by too many hands, too many overseer's, short coaching tenure and athletic programs that cannot establish continuity long enough to build from within.
It is going to take some vision, some clout and some determination to get PHS football back where it could and should be. Laying blame at one man's doorstep is a symptom of the frustration that losing and mediocrity bring.

Are you telling me that not even your boss, The principal of your place of employment can fire you, or make you resign if he wanted to!! You must be the man!!! I think Dr. Evans told Kevin Mills this, "look man you have caused me so much bad publicity these last couple of years, especially with this last incident, everyone saying you kicked a player and all (errrrr allegedly) that either you resign or I will have to fire you"!!!
Why else would Mills resign so abrubtly, he knew the heat was coming around the corner. And whats funny is that I heard through the grapevine that mills called the starnews first, before the AD or princinpal could do it. Of coures this would make sense so that he can get his story out first, remember the first story printed is usually the one people believe.

As for Mills' coaching abilities, I agree with you there, he rode the coat tails of two of the best players to come through pasadena in a long time, Ikner and Crockom. But take away that talent and mills was reduced to nothing.

as for that incident at Blair when he was the coach, I have heard Mills personally brag about how he almost caused a riot, and how, "aint no referee gonna tell me what to do" thats probably why PHS always got hosed by the officials.

Well lets stop giving Mills so much pub, lets focus on getting a new coach in there to bring some dignity, integrity, and for christ sake, someone who isnt going to kick players in the chest karate style.

Lets stay away from the likes of, Agent 0, Don King, The General...all of which are Mills alias's..

Food for thought: I wonder what coach in his right mind would even apply for the job at PHS after reading this blog.

Some like to toss accusations of racism around without facts to support such claims other than some conspiracy theory based on conjecture. It is often done to enflame a situation based on a lack of facts.

The sad thing is, when there are true cases of racism, they are met with skepticism due to someone having “cried wolf” in the past.

If you are a fan of PHS and continue to post accusations about the program, I can pretty much guarantee you are hurting any chance of getting a solid replacement to coach. I guess some are happy with the Stangs holding the bell. :)

As I said earlier I gave Miguel the benefit of the doubt when this first came out. What I had an issue with was re-hashing old info that everyone had known about and moved on from. If it had something to do with what happend this year than report it. I have NO problem with that, but recycling news that the high school and the school board ruled on made no sense to me.
I've seen worse things reported on in this area when it applied to coaches. The difference was the things reported were current. Abusing children is something I find deplorable and if he did that resigning is only the begining of his problems. I don't think you personally would have gone so far back to report incidents, apparently from these latest allegations there was more current info to work with. I don't want to see Backus or Mills put through this. I'm asking that the person who reports this stuff act with a little decency.

FredJ said:

Let me quickly address this Huckster and Westside folks. The difference with Mills is that a police report was filed and frankly, people at PHS spoke on the record, so we had much more information to work with. In the Youngblood situation, again, he was arrested on campus (later dropped), and we had a police report to work it. Was it any different than how we covered Mike Parisi, a white baseball coach at Arcadia when he was terminated after being arrested, though later cleared as well. We splashed his story on the front page too. In the Backus situation, all we know is there is a school investigation. As far as we know, a police report has not been filed and Backus has not been arrested. Everything is internal within the school and they're keeping quiet. I can assure you if the circumstances were the same and the information available to us was the same, the stories would be treated equally in respect to which page we put it on. Hope that helps.

I'm just say'in said:

Miguel,
My point is if you look back at how PSN threw Youngblood under the bus last year for a situation they did not know much about was classic media. Weather sticking to the topic or not the way bloggers have been able to bash Mills on the threads you posted is also classic. Everyone has an opinion and a blog is a good place to voice it, I fault no one for their opinion. But the question remains why does Backus get a pass? A coach who might not be able to coach his team in the playoffs and there is no thread? The silence is deafening.

The coaching job at PHS will workout, it's early yet.

The reporter on this blog should be a little more responsible in his handling of situations like this. People do have the RIGHT to move on with their lives and Mills should be allowed to do the same.

When Coach Mills was at Blair, there was a postgame incident involving the officials in the tunnel that Mills incited. It caused the officials to enter and exit a different way to and from the filed to the locker room.

Mills was hired over the objections of the previous PHS Athletic Director, following that incident at Blair.

Goldenarm said:

I agree. With Mills resignation inked, detailing supposed "incidents" from two years back bring zero value to the story or provide the man a deserved degree of respect in stepping down.
In my opinion the Backus "breaking news" put gas on the fire rather than clearing the air with any fact. The supposed "breaking news" was already 8 days old in the TC camp.
PSN will be hard pressed to develop any trust or relationships with local coaching staffs if it elects itself the 60 Minutes Investigative Team rather than the local source for prep sports reporting.

Other papers with closer ties to TC simply stated Backus was on leave, rather than tarnish or convict the man BEFORE even a cursory hearing takes place on his behalf.

I don't pretend to know much about the coaching skills or possible faults Coach Mills has. By living in Pasadena 18 years though, I do know that the woes of the PHS football program will not return to glory simply by him exiting and a new face stepping in. Best of luck to Coach Mills.

HS Sports Fan said:

There is a lot of talk about incidents involving Mills. Unless you have first hand knowledge of the incident(s) and understand due process, then to mention is slanderous. Above all Mills is a teacher in the PUSD and any infraction would be dealt with not only at the school but by the school board as well. Mills is young, passionate and bright. As mentioned before won/loss record is only part of the equation. Helping young boys grow into men just as important and Mills gives of himself.

As far as a coach is concerned, it is always preferable to have an campus teacher in that capacity. Given that as a parameter Garrison would be a good choice. He is a good man and has excellent football knowledge.

I will say this I read the report of Mills resignation and the most startling thing for me was the fact that Miguel put in there the incidents that were almost 2yrs old. I understand that based on the complaints he had this year was enough to call for some review of his role with the team, but to bring up that incident was uncalled for. I didn't respond to it trying to give Miguel the benefit of the doubt, until the Backus report.
Miguel I'm not going to call you racist but after the decent interview he gave you after a crushing defeat I feel you could have given the man more respect then that. Your going to learn in this area be very careful what you report because some things are racially sensitve.

Believe me, if they tried to use something on him to get rid of him the man would have fought them to the end of the earth! I know my brother better than you know the administration! Now, you may have heard them whispering some things behind his back, but trust that nothing was being waved over his head! That’s a guarantee! He’s way to stubborn to bow down!

Why do you think he resigned so abrubtly. I know Kevin and he is so cocky that a 1-9 season was not enough to make him quit on his own. Trust me I have inside knowledge on this situation. He was also accused of shoving a kid into a fence over the summer. I also was witness to this.

Kevin is a supreme organizer, who knows how to get things done! I’ve been all on his coaching for years, because it was warranted! The school district has put him on administrative leave, ok that’s cool.

What I want to know is why isn’t this front page news with this man’s picture on the front page of the “STAR NEWS/TRIBUNE”? I’ll tell you why, because he is a “WHITE MAN” that is about to be treated fairly and with respect in our judicial system! I don’t see anyone on here blogging about that situation! All of us “African-Americans” should be up in arms on this situation!

When it was Kevin, everyone was ready to pile on him and was in a long line to bash his character! He was basically convicted in the “PUBLIC EYE” but you nice “self righteous” people will play the wait and see game on “Backus”….. I truly understand the game you people play.

Miguel Melendez & Fred Robledo,

why don’t you start up a blog conversation on how this man (Backus) is being treated versus the way Kevin was being treated on his situation by your news paper. My question to you is the “STAR NEWS” a bunch of racist reporters ready to assassinate any and every “AFRICAN AMERICANS” character?

Big A,

This is why I think and feel the way I do, because someone will come on here and try and justify the “Star News” with an intelligent response. This same attitude spills out on the field when those refs are calling games! Whether it be football, basketball, soccer or baseball they’re pro’s at doing it and I’m a pro at spotting it!

I say go with Randy Horton PHS D-Coordinator 1st, Wardell Crutchfield Duarte’s coach 2nd, Tom Maher 3rd and Keith Jones of San Gabriel 4th! Tip might be a good choice, but I think when Kevin takes the AD job at PHS some time in the near future, that situation wouldn’t be good for Tip.

I say coach TIP and then I would move so that my son can play for him!

Maher would be a bad choice, the reason he is no longer coach at PCC is because of scandal and doing a whole lot of shady things
