....Star Picks....Do playoff wins count?

| | Comments (50) |

Star-News preps writer Keith Lair and I will be going head-to-head throughout the season, and I will update our records each Monday on the "Star Picks" thread.

Melendez: Last week: 14-4; Overall: 100-40
Lair: Last week: 15-3; Overall: 111-29

Notes: I have to find a way to rig Lair's picks this week. He has a comfortable lead and unless he tanks the remaining two games in the regular season, I have no shot at catching him. But I'm the rookie, right? Give me a break. My wrong picks this week were: San Gabriel (lost to Alhambra); Arcadia (lost to Burroughs); South El Monte (lost to Gabrielino); and La Salle (lost to Mary Star of the Sea). Lair's wrong picks were: San Gabriel, South El Monte, and Workman (lost to Duarte).

This week: Someone guessed it: Alemany vs. St. Francis is Game of the Week (although I don't understand why some people call it GOTY..Game of the Year?!? That acronym is throwing me off). I had a hard time picking South Pasadena over La Canada. That game will be good. In the end, the Tigers have a little more offense than the Spartans. If Alhambra plays the way it did against San Gabriel last week they should beat Bell Gardens. Matadors lose to a motivated Schurr, Duarte over Bassett is a no-brainer as Monrovia over Blair, too.

Thursday's Game with Prediction
South Pasadena at La Canada, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (South Pasadena)

Friday,'s Games with Predictions
Alemany at St. Francis, 7:30 p.m. -- Melendez (Alemany)
San Marino at Temple City, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (San Marino)
San Gabriel at Schurr, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Schurr)
Arcadia at Burbank, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Arcadia)
Muir at Hoover, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Hoover .. j/k Muir)
Monrovia vs. Blair at PCC, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Monrovia)
Pasadena at Crescenta Valley, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Crescenta Valley)
Alhambra at Bell Gardens, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Alhambra)
Bassett at Duarte, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Duarte)
Gabrielino at Rosemead, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Rosemead)
Montebello at Keppel, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Montebello)
La Salle at Cantwell Sacred Heart, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Cantwell)
Calvary Chapel at Maranatha, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Maranatha)
Pasadena Poly vs. Viewpoint, at South Pasadena, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Pasadena Poly)
Webb at Rio Hondo Prep, 7:30 p.m. -- Melendez (Rio Hondo Prep)
Bosco Tech vs. St. Bernard at St. Matthias, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Bosco Tech)

Saturday's Games with Predictions
Flintridge Prep at Chadwick, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Chadwick)
Campbell Hall at Marshall, 2 p.m. -- Melendez (Campbell Hall)

BTW, I had a date Sunday and we decided to go somewhere to watch the Patriots-Colts game over dinner and drinks. We ended up at "TGI Fridays" in West Covina. When we walked up to the door I found this note posted. I HAD to take a picture and share it with my Raiders friends. Absolutely hilarious. Talk about a stigma that truly sticks. An instant classic!

Thanks for the "love" in the LC v. SP game, but I am afraid I have to go with GA and some others (as much as it pains me) in picking the Spartans over my Tigers. The trouble as I see it this year is that as tough as we seem to play through 3 quarters (SM 21 -7, Monrovia 20-10 and TC 28-15), we do not have the current strength and depth in our OL (3 sophmores) and front 7 on defense (6 sophmores and juniors) to sustain a game to the end. We just don't have enough Steven Colliau's to finish. Nevertheless, I still believe it will be a close game, at least through the 3rd Quarter, and turnovers always can make a difference. As an eternal optomist I am simply going to say I am "waiting until next year", and I hope I do not have to eat those words.

By the way, I really do believe that TC will beat SM in a close one, and that the season ender between TC and LC will also be close. My question is then what takes place if TC beats SM, loses to LC and a tie for third at 3-2 takes place?

I also believe that SP playing Maranatha next year would be a great game for both teams, especially with the skills of Matt Schilz on display. It would be great to see a current D-1 player against a possible future one in the SP QB Connor Bednarski. However, for the Maranatha faithful, what happens after Schilz leaves? What gives in the following year in a home-and-home series. Over time, and not in a single year setting, I strongly believe that Maranatha would not compete favorably in the RHL.

Finally, I have a very hard time wondering why Rosemead does not get as much press and noteriety as I believe they should. Having seen them in preseason , and their results since, the top 3 teams in the WSGV are Muir, SF and Rosemead with a large gap thereafter. I clearly forsee that Muir and Rosemead will go deep into the playoffs and possibly win.

I've seen LC play earlier this season and they are probably the best over-looked team in the area. They will handle So.Pasadena but I think their lack of offense will hurt them against a solid TC team.TC will beat SM they are peaking at the right time and AHS is healthy now they will prove lots of people wrong in the only month that counts,NOVEMBER!

Anonymous said:

LC will get a big win over south pas. 4/5 games they've lost this year have been decided in the 4th quarter and all of them have been close. LC's defense has been amazing this year led by Michael Weston who's averaging 10+ tackles a game and quarterback Rocky Moore has been great too as a first year varsity starter. LC deserves some credit and I believe they'll win against TC and make playoffs.

if D.RILEY was in the pacific league or rio hondo league, he would have surpased 1000 yards by game 5. Against CV he ran for 215 yards averaging 9 yrds a carry. against the golpers he ran for 118 yards averaging 10 yrds a pop. and against burroughs he ran for 114 yrds with 6 YPC. Those are top teams in the pacific league, leaving out muir. He ran all over 3 good pacific league teams. it would be mayhem if he was playing those types of teams everygame.....

Paul Devine is a good Defensive end #34 he has 3 sacks and 43 tackles. But the other Defensive end Fernando Aguilar #55 has 4 sacks and 61 tackles. He should be considered Defensive player of the year so far for the Pacific League. You can find all the stats at Max preps.com and compare both Defensive ends. #55 is second on the Pacific League in total tackles that plays Defensive end.And Paul Devine #34 is 5th in total tackles for the Pacific league. So so far my pick for Defensive player of the year goes out to Fernando Aguilar #55 and second or Co-Defensive player of the year should be Paul Devine #34.Most tackles are done by Linebackers but these two athletes are Defensive Ends that should tell you something about Muir's Defensive Line #1 in the San Gabriel Valley.

Stang fan,
That's a good point.
It will be interesting to see how Miguel calculates it.

The Stang Fan said:

Glendog,

That sounds good to me. However, you also have to take into account the schedule of a certain player's team. For example, what would Dietrich Riley do in the RHL, Montview, or Pacific? Likewise, how would Bingo, M. Williams, or Golper fare in other leagues. What about the fact that Golper IS his team, and they just might not make the playoffs as a result? Does that affect his chances? This is a major topic of discussion in all leagues at all levels virtually every year. It's usually a tough call year-in and year-out....I don't see any difference, once again, in WSGV prep football this year.

Glendogg,
I agree with that. In that case I would say r.thomas becuase he plays 3 positions on offense and scores at all 3 positions and he also leading the area in int's. His team is also 7~1. To be honest I don't think to many area teams will go far in playoffs!

what do you think about this?
I believe the the Heisman candidate should go to the player that has the best stats at their position and how far his performances takes his team the furthest in the play-offs...Do you agree?

Hal Lamaster said:

The Stang Fan,
"Burroughs by 14 points or more" is a good prediction for Burroughs and Glendale. The more I think about it the more I can't see GHS containing Dominique Barnes. If he gets loose, it could be a blow out.

my last ccomment was for Glendog.
Go obama!!!!!!!!!!!

!stang! said:

The offense has 3 weapons that all put up points!
r.thomas
J.williams
M.campbel
and the defense is lock down! with 2 DE playing at a high level with sacks and big hits.

look at the stats:
The last 3 games the more has out score its opponents 133-13
in league the out scored everyone 164 -26.
no ohter team in the area is playing like muir.
players of the year:
*De 34 : he is fast, hits hard, and always gets to the ball
*R.thomas: This kid can play anywhere on the field , he is a big play waiting to happen. He leads to theleague in int( he would lead in td but burroughs have been running up the score late in the game, with their running back.)
*M.campbell: Best reciever in the area . He averages a touchdown every 3 touches... thats just crazy!

The Stang Fan said:

Glendog,

I think you're referring to !stang!'s prediction about the top three players. I don't entirely agree with his assessment. While I think Muir has a plethora of good players I think the two that stick out for me in terms of POY are "Bingo" Thomas and Myles Campbell. However, as mentioned before, players like M. Williams, T. Golper, D. Riley and others are MAJOR players for the award as well.

Miguel,

Burroughs beats Glendale by 14 or more. No question.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Anonymous.

I've come to understand why you guys stay "anonymous". Perhaps because you fear you might say something and it'd come back to bite you in the butt, not able to withstand the wrath of the readers.

It's OK, if I felt that way I'd hide behind an anonymous name, too.

Miguel, Of course you would go with Glendale? You really don't know much about this game!

Glendog said:

Stang Fan,
just curious why Muir should have top three for players of the year?
I'm not doubting you i'm just curious?

Miguel Melendez said:

I'd go with Glendale. After seeing Burroughs a few weeks ago against Muir, the feeling is they self-destruct easily while the Nitros are well-coached, and it's shown.

Miguel, I don't see a prediction for the Burroughs / Glendale game Thursday... Just wondering what you thought about it?

Miguel,
Nice comeback! Looks like you have the momentum heading into the last 2 weeks. I think you end the bet at the regular season and place a second wager for the playoffs. Just my 2 cents.

Lastly, at the season’s conclusion, I would recommend you make 2 posts: The biggest Surprise of 08 and the biggest disappointment of 08. I would be interested to see people's thoughts. What do you think? I know you are a man of the people! LOL

GAME OF THE WEEK -
Good luck to Saint Francis - this game deserves "game of the week" and could turn out to be one of the seasons biggest games.

Alemany has only lost to max powerhouse Notre Dame (60.6 power rating!) Alemany also trounced Harvard-Westlake(same team that destroyed the Mead)and has beaten Saugus as well.
Calpreps shows respect to SF by setting the game at Alemany 21, SF 17.

Hopefully SF is still abuzz from the DBL OT win. They are going to need to pull it all out of storage shed to beat Alemany. It would be a great win for the SGV...
Good luck to SF...

chd said:

St Francis/ Alemany is for the league championship.the hnights defence will keep them in the game but the offence needs to put points on the boared .the knights QB needs to be patient and stay in the pocket. the passing game is key to victory. Alemany is in for a surprise this Friday.

Not a mention of TC versus San Marino in any of your comments. Apparently PSN feels this is a ho-hum game.

Clearly you have written off TC...historically a move that has proven to come back with big teeth. I know you saw us beat down by Rosemead - and since that game have formed your opinion and stuck with it. You further highlighted this when overlooking TC and repping the Wildcat/Titan showdown at season end. Again, TC as stepping stone.

Fortunately the M-town folk know different, as do the SM coaching staff and anyone else familiar with the brand of competiveness that comes out of Temple City High School.

SM has truly mapped itself this season, no longer a strong start and fold team, but staying focused and doing the things it takes to stay undefeated. They deserve the coverage and commentary as much, if not more than TC.

Even if you plop a feature article to recoup the omission...it seems you have lost the pulse of area football, at least temporarily.

Friday's game will exceed North Field capacity on both sides of the field.
Go Rams!!

TC Fan said:

Miguel, explain why Alemany vs St.Francis is Game of the Week, and not San Marino vs Temple City? Aren't the headlines enough? Mooney and coaching staff returns to TC on homecoming, Undefeated SM vs up and rising TC.

Hal Lamaster said:

I see it this way...

RIO HONDO
LC vs. SP- I can see why SP supporters are excited about the future, but in the present, the Spartans are the superior team.

San Marino will have their hands full at TC. This should be a GREAT game. I give the edge to the Titans.

PACIFIC
Burbank vs. Arcadia- Both teams are limping towards the finish line. Burbank has a chance if they can contain Golper.

Muir vs. Hoover- Muir should rest all their starters. They will need fresh legs and healthy bodies for that long run in the playoffs.

Glendale vs. Burroughs- The Nitros don't have the athletes that some of the league teams have but they have battled. Containing Burroughs' Dominique Barnes may be too much to ask.

the real hsfbfan said:

Philly B,

That's true..golper scored 3 Tds against glendale. Arcadia needs to win one of two to make the playoffs. A big plus is if glendale upsets burroughs because head to head arcadia beat glendale.

oh i forgot:
the alemany/st. francis series is a rivalry. and st. francis wins every single year.
thats like saying HS will win the turkey tussle this year.. well not really but you know what i mean

Anonymous said:

so lemme get this straight.. you chose st. francis over crespi, along with ever other game this week. but all of a sudden you choose alemany over st. francis.. sure they're good this year. they got a bunch of transfers and recruit like all hell. however, the players at st. francis have been playing together for 3-4 years (more for who have played pop warner together) and have built a team bond, rhythm, and chemistry, no number of transfers can replace.

you are in for quite a surprise my friend, i promise you that.

burbanksports said:

Philly B - It will be an entertaining game. Burbank will empty the 8 man football offensive playbook.

the real hsfbfan- I would be shocked if Burbank can hold Golper to only 20 points.

Philly B. said:

Funny, I just notice that sign about the raiders. I saw the same thing at Chilies in Pico Rivera I just started laughing

Philly B. said:

I plan on being at the Arcadia game. the real hsfbfan,
you better hope arcadia wins the rest of their games because if not then its bye bye playoffs. La canada might have a chance since the game is at their house, but that young QB at south pas will get his chance to show that hes gonna be the tigers future if he wins away from home. Burbanksports, I hope will give the Apaches a run for their money or at least for mines lol.

Miguel,
How sure are about SM winning @T.C.???? T.C. will be victorious at their homecoming game. Its hard to beat T.C. at home and especially on homecoming night. I know all the drama about former coaches this and that, but all that stuff will be out the window come kickoff. Buckus will have his boys ready for battle.

the real hsfbfan said:

Miguel,

Arcadia has to win. I think they will do it too. I have arcadia by 3. 20-17. With Hoover vs. Muir, I hope muir doesn't put up triple digits on them. It's possible though. It's going to take hoover a few years to get on track. if I were them, I'd run the ball on every down to keep the ball out of muir's hands to avoid a huge blow out and if i were coaching hoover, I'd ask the refs for a running clock at kickoff.

miketev said:

how did the date go?!

Random said:

Miguel you just got another pick wrong La Canada will beat South Pass. no problem. La Canada defensive secondary has allowed a total of 60 yards passing in all of league and south pass. has a poor running game. Their QB is good for a sophomore and will be great in a few years but south pass. will not beat La Canada.
