Turkey Tussle: Kevin Mills was ready for war

| | Comments (25) |

WHO: John Muir (8-1, 6-0) vs. Pasadena (1-8, 1-5)

WHEN: Friday, 7 P.M.

WHERE: Rose Bowl

John Muir leads the series, 36-17-2

For the record, Pasadena coach Kevin Mills doesn't read the blog, so he says.

Before I got off the phone with him I asked him what was up with the military gear. I told him I was taken aback by it and said it wasn't an outfit I'd expect a head football coach to wear during a marquee game.

"OK, OK, I'll give you that," was Mills' response. He said the message he was trying to convey was that Pasadena, in the Turkey Tussle two years ago, was going to war.

"We've been hostage for 11 years," Mills said, "that's what it is." He went on to say, "in this town you're based on what you've done against Muir."

Though the Bulldogs are 1-8 with the season coming to an end Friday night, Mills added that winning that game and a Bulldog stepping up will be remembered years to come. He brought up the example of Muir QB Tarrell Amos, AKA Famous Amos who single handily helped the Mustangs beat Pasadena in 1988.

In regards to Pasadena alumni who have expressed disinterest for this year's Turkey Tussle, here's what Mills had to say:

If you can't support where you once went to school and understand the magnitude of the game then that's on you. This game is about the kids. If you're coming to the game come see the game to support the kids. Come support both schools, period.

THIS IS HOW FRED J. ROBLEDO REMEMBERS THE TURKEY TUSSLE:

M-towners,

Looks like Monrovia's talent is all over the field and making a difference at Charter Oak.

Good luck to the Cats Friday against San Marino. I think your D-line and overall defensive speed will cause problems for their offense. I don't think Maddox will take them lightly, which would be a big mistake...and prevent an undefeated league play season.
Good luck to the Titans as well, time for a gut check after a tough loss to the fired up Rams last week.

I thought maybe PSN would have a story on the M-town/SM game - since it is so crucial in deciding the final RHL outcome. Not so.

The TC kids need to focus this week - with a big piece missing - they know what they need to do. Step up Rams and bring the pain on D!!
Go Rams!

Here is hoping the kids play hard football and nothing but, the coaches set an example of leadership under fire, and the refs take no BS and keep the calls by the book.

Here is also hoping the juniors on the losing team leave the Rose feeling pissed, and just bitter enough to want to come back and get a W next year, so the great Turkey Tussle remains something always looked forward to in Dena. There is alot of ghosts in that big empty Bowl, so show them you can play.

Good luck to the kids at PHS and Muir.

Huckster,

No need to "observe" that waste of time known as the "Turkey Tussle"... I'll "observe" the box score, 56-6 Muir... No sense in wasting 2 hours of my life watching Muir destroy Pasadena...

Saladin and Derrick two of the best. Amazing field vision; I think Saladin edges Derrick. His ability to see the vertical seams on the field, maybe the best I've seen.

Who said Amos? good but down the list aways.

I know I've taken some shots at Mills this week. Truth be told he's a good man, but the gloves come off this week.

Obama's our 44 president! Change is in the wind.. Let's support both teams. I also played at PCC on a great team with players from all of the surrounding schools. Sam Brown, James Dunlap (Blair), Dennis Carr, Brian Lynch (JM), Tom Polich (SM), Steve Azzam (Arcadia), just to name a few... Those Turkey Tussle wins stir up some good memories. 'Dena High hey, we know, we ......

Observer,

just come and observe the game, because they haven't embarrassed him yet! They won't do it this year either! No matter how sorry people think PHS is, if you have never played in the "Tussle" you should keep your mouth shut! You just don't know what's going to happen!

Mills looks embarrasing in military garb. Is he really trying to inspire his team or draw atention to himself? No substance.
By the way West Piont called looking for sombody impersonating a field general

Stang Alum,

My favorite muir running back was Saladin McCullough. He amazed me with some of his carries at muir. I though his brother Sultan would have been better, but he was more of a track guy playing football.

No substitute for blocking and tackling fellas.

I like the Terrell "Famous" Amos reference dating back to the one year he played for Muir. At about 150 pounds has to be the most impressive open field runner I've seen at "any level." That kid had an ability to make defenders miss him unlike any athlete I can remember. Derrick Holmes the following year was similiar but also had better size. But Famous was the best no doubt stang fans will never forgot him.

It's really not at you Miguel, but these people can dish it out and can't take it! I'm really thick skinned, so not to much will bother me! I disagree with my bro about coaching, but I still love him and we are family. A lot of these people are scared to have a convo with him and take cheap shots him! It's all to the good, cause it's "Tussle" week! Let's go Dogs!

Observer, just come and observe the game, because they haven't embarrassed him yet! They won't do it this year either! No matter how sorry people think PHS is, if you have never played in the "Tussle" you should keep your mouth shut! You just don't know what's going to happen! Stay tuned for what? Watch what you wish for "O"!

Observer said:

oh yeah, I forgot to add... "Stay tuned"

Mills constantly talks like he actually has something to be proud about this year... He has no chance against Muir Friday... Mills, just try to avoid getting embarrassed...

It wasn't a shot at Mills, Huckster. I told Mills I'd ask him a specific question that would be used for the blog and he answered it. We had a pretty good conversation about it.

Miguel Melendez,

I like your trick shot’s at my Bro, but where does this picture has any relevance to the “Tussle” this year? That picture was two years ago and controversial (War in Iraq), but with the “lil weaklings” on this blog I’m willing to bet your just sitting back waiting to see who fires first! I like it, but some of these jokesters better watch it, because I like to be the only one firing on my bro! He may not read it, but I know who does! Football shots are on him, but anything personal you would not have seen the last of the “Buckster”! I know too much dirt on to many people that blogs from Pasadena that are real sensitive! Bottom line keep it “FOOTBALL”! For your own sakes! I’m smiling too!!!!
