....You have until 3 p.m. to vote.....

...No, I'm not talking about the Presidential Election. I'm talking about the tentative top 10 poll below.
When I covered tennis at The Register I'd have an "O.C. Coaches' Top 10 poll". I would select 5-10 coaches who would submit their ballot each week and that would be the top 10 poll, not my top 10 poll. I might implement that next football season (what do you coaches think?) but for now here's what we're looking at.
My top 10 rankings will be submitted no later than 3:30 p.m. today and will appear in Wednesday's paper. You have until 3 p.m. to have your say on my tentative rankings below. If you don't vote then don't whine. Same goes for the Presidential Election.

It's good to see our boys rank at 6 this week, we were looking kinda low at ten last week. No worries though, as long as these boys continue to show up and give it their all we will do well! Our boys are strong, and very determined and like you said Miguel they have too much talent! Well they showed up last week, and it was DAMN good to see them connect on that field and bring it home with a win. In reality these boys just need to love what they do and just do it to their best ability. I think it is kind a scary that both games you covered we did win. A part of me wanted to come down to the field shake your hand and ask you what you thought about our boys and their talents showing up that night. Is it true that your an Alumni? and what year did you granduate from Alhambra. Thanks for covering such exciting times for these young boys, their schools, and their families.

MHS Fan,
"anyone dare to schedule MHS next year"?
If you truly believe "fear" is the motivating factor you are not playing RHL teams, you may be slightly off track.
MHSFan: i think Blair has some openings in its schedule. they could only pull together 8 games this season. I am hearing from my sources that since Maranatha has only JV and Varsity football teams, some Rio Hondo league schools do not want to schedule with Maranatha because their Frosh teams will not have a game that week. this seems legit... to a degree.
MHS Fan,
I would love to see a muir vs Maranatha!!!! But Muir has another with this shedule and then maybe muir vs Maranatha could happen.
So lets settle the whole thing with Maranatha. Who's first in the Rio Hondo League. Anyone dare to schedule MHS next year?? Anyone?? (Sound of Crickets).....
I guess not. I beg ANYONE connected to ANY Rio Hondo league team to PLEASE call Coach Murphy and get Maranatha on your schedule next year!! I'll bet nobody will call. I'm sure Coach Murphy will happily accept.
When and If that happens next year we will know more about how they compare at least to the Rio Hondo league.
MHS fans, let it go. Give it time and I am sure the doubters will say "I told you so" or "Well done". Lets give it time and encourage Murphy to schedule us some tougher teams next year. Of course, what happened when we did that with St. Margarets last year? That was ugly.

Goldenarm,
I always appreciate your posts. Fantasy or reality, TC is an incredibly tough match up for Maranatha and eventhough it's fun to debate on here, Maranatha is ranked in the correct spot. I guess the bottom line is encapsulated in Miguel's comment about the Rams, they are peaking at the right time. It's all about the postseason and the I'm excited to see how it all ends up.
I have not seen TC play this year but it appears that if you could pick a time of year to play an undefeated San Marino this would be it. It should be an emotional game for the kids and the coaches and I wish your Rams the best.
Damn, it is hard to vote against a "D" that has allowed 8.5 points per game.
That is Stang "lights out" D.
Build on that fact...and flags could be flying in Pasadena!
just me,
I am sure your remaining opponents respect your 8-0 record, they would be foolish not to.
I have not seen Maranatha play, but it seems TC's 4-4 record finds us pitted against you in fantasy football.
Maybe AFTER we go eye to eye with the upcomimg 8-0 Titan team we face - we can rap about it then. Right now - we have our own battle for respect.
Good luck to the Maranatha kids.
I like Maranatha and the kids there. I hate to say it but Maranatha is lucky to be listed at the 8 spot. I have seen all three teams and both San Gabriel and Arcadia would roll Maranatha. As far as Maranatha with the 1 point upset over La Salle: have you seen La Salle play this year? Sadly, this La Salle team is a shadow of it's former self healthy or not. Or should I say this La Salle "Coaching Staff" is a shadow of its former self. (What happened to La Salle this year? Yikes…) Maranatha should be ranked in the 10 spot until they beat a TC/Monrovia/Arcadia/San Marino.
I’m not blogging for some bullcrap! I got to get this in, because I say so much crap to get responses from people. I also know this is not a political blog either, but I got to get this in! This is the first time in my life that I have felt like a true American! It feels so good! White, Black, Latino’s and Asians being one! This is my proudest American moment! To keep it all they way Huckster! I’m loaded as hell!!!!! Lets Go Dogs!!!!
ranked*
maxpreps and cal preps has muir rated above everyone else in the southeats div!
TC and Alhambra would kill Maranatha.
End of Story. Arcadia and San Gabriel would most likely beat Maranatha as well. You should be happy with #8
I think SG should be above temple city, but my opinion is toooooooo late to matter :(
!Stang!
No, not the education route, this is football plain and simple. I said educated and informative meaning throw out some facts as to why "Maranatha is not good, Arcadia would beat them..." Your blanket statement is pretty ridiculous in regard to Miguel's headline. No one is crying either, I simply stated facts that I see pertain to Miguel's headline. It's after 3:00 now so this post doesn't count. I have nothing but respect for every team in this top ten and the majority of them would be tough match ups for Maranatha; thus the ranking at #8. I believe that Maranatha would "compete" with teams in this top ten and I would love to see them schedule a tougher preseason next year. As I said, "you're the expert" so rather than spouting of statements without information tell me what makes you feel that "Maranatha is not good." I think that 8-0 is good and a #2 ranking in CIF as voted on by coaches is good but I'll yield to you, the expert. As I mentioned in my original post, I understand the ranking. Re-read my post and try to understand that 8-0 deserves respect.
Huckster,
What up bro!!! Let me just reiterate my past sentiments. Wait, wait, wait....hold on.....let me just clear my.....hmm, hmm, hmmmmmmmmm!!!!......
Okay....much better!
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"I just see some things working for us!" Listen Huck, the only thing that would work for you guys would be to hire Tucker and replace the goalposts with 10-foot rims.
Oh, and by the way, the only things that should be bracing themselves are the phs defense and the Rose Bowl scoreboard. It's going to get UGLY this year! 13 years and counting.......
Just me,
Im tired of hearing maranatha fans cry! Shut up and play some real teams! But since you guys can't beat us, you have to take the education route. Its all good!and I have watched maranatha play!
Booooooo... haha
Verdict stands. Tentative polls become tomorrow's poll.
Its 3:14, whats the verdict?
To all the Stang Fans,
I really believe we are going to upset you guys! I just see somethings working for us! LETS GO DOGS!!!!! Miguel, I'm going to be quiet until next week, so brace your selves bloggers!!!!!
Yours truely
!stang!
Have you watched Maranatha play this year? If so and if you have watched Arcadia than ok you're the expert. Why not include some educated, informative comments rather than an ignorant statement? Golper is a stud and would create havoc for Maranatha, no doubt about that. If you read my comment I did not bash anyone or any team. There are a lot of quality teams in the WSGV and Arcadia would definitely be the favorite if that match up ever came to pass.
Maranatha is not good! Arcadia would beat them.....
Miguel: If I remember we weren’t suppose to beat La Salle and yet did come from behind and pulled off the upset victory. RHP is always trouble for us. They have a great program and always turn out strong teams for such a small school. For what it’s worth Kilpatrick is not winless, they won last week and if you would have seen how they played against us I don’t understand how they can only be 1 and 7 so far this season. Of course Temple City and Alhambra would most likely beat those teams so I guess your putting the Minutemen on the same level as the Rio Hondo league.
I have never said Maranatha should be #1, hey I was kidding with that previous post, and I don’t remember any Maranatha fan posting they should be so I don’t know where that statement you made came from. Yes, the two top teams in the Alpha league are Brentwood and Maranatha and next weeks game should be a great game. And yes Maranatha should have been ranked from the start. Hey they went as far into the playoffs as any other PSN school last year.
Dude, I don’t want to get into a shouting match with you but would like to see the Minutemen get a far deal and sorry I don’t think they’ve been getting one so far this season
Your comments on the teams are interesting and well informed. They raise good questions. I am a Maranatha fan and as such I want to throw this out there. While I do not want to compare apples to oranges I would like to better understand what constitutes a top ten team in the area. When I think of football rankings my mind automatically shifts to the BCS and it makes me think about traditional major conferences in comparison to say the WAC, Conference USA or the MAC. Boise State/Utah/Ball State will not compete for a national championship because of their schedule...ok I kind of understand. USC drops to #7 after a 56-0 trouncing of UW this year because of a weak PAC 10, ok I can kind of understand. An SEC or Big 12 team with one loss could jump an undefeated Penn State, ok I kind of understand.
With all that said an undefeated Boise State, Utah, or the suprise Ball State is just that undefeated, and they get respect even though they play an inferior schedule in comparison to teams in the Big 12 or the SEC. At the end of the year they play in a BCS game and win (remember Oklahoma. Obviously this will never happen in HS and for good reason, but the point is undefeated teams EARN respect, period.
At the beginning of the season Maranatha's schedule looked like this:
Week 0: Lindfield Christian, a team that finished last year 8-4, winning a first round playoff game before losing to eventual CIF runner up Brentwood. Staring the season ranking #4 in CIF. Decent opener.
Week 1: LaSalle, a team that finished 6-6 and won a first round playoff game 30-3 before losing to eventual CIF champion Santa Clara. Not a bad choice for a week one opponent. Oh and by the way, LaSalle was healthy when Maranatha beat them. Game of the week so Miguel can comment here. If no comment, why the article on LaSalle's injuries; obviously they changed the team dynamic. LaSalle was preseason top ten if you recall.
Week 2: Capistrano Valley, finished 4-6 and didn't make the playoffs. A questionable game any way you slice it. All have the right to question the schedule in week 2.
Week 3: Mojave, a team that finished 3-8 last year, made the playoffs and lost in the first round. One of the 3 wins was against Maranatha and a rematch had to insue; what you got was 62-20 win this year. Expected and the game needed to happen.
Week 4: Bye
Week 5: Rio Hondo, traditionally a powerful small school and they still are. 2 of their 3 losses this year have come by the hands of CIF ranked #2 Maranatha and #3 ranked Brentwood. A game that has been dominated by Rio Hondo yet in the past two years Maranatha has won. A rivalry that should continue.
Then you have league. Even national champions play in close games that everyone thought would be blow outs. Close games make a team what they are and they teach teams how to compete and finish. The overtime victory against Kilpatrick, huh let's look at what people have coined as a weak Kilpatrick; lost to West Adams (City Section), lost to Inglewood who I do not know much about, lost to Filmore, lost to Golden Valley who plays against Hart and Canyon in league, probably not a bad team. Lost to Santa Clara 8-0 defending CIF champion, then Maranatha. Not bad losses in my book?
Anyway, sorry for the long post and all my rambling with facts. Bottom line is that an undefeated team gets respect at any level of competition. While rankings don't really mean anything people who hate on Maranatha should know the facts. 1-2, even 3 losses makes sense for a top ten, but a .500 team moving up or maintaining while an undefeated Maranatha moves down last week makes me wonder.
Project what you will but Maranatha is a quality team and would probably compete with a lot of teams in this top ten. Muir and St. Francis would without a doubt blow Maranatha away but the others would probably be decent games. Who knows how Maranatha would fair but one thing I do know is that they are not the Maranatha of old and they shouldn't be disrespected. I guess the future will tell. Maranatha has EARNED respect and it should be noted.
Tom S,
probably because Maranatha would not beat any of these 4-4 teams that's just keeping real.I can understand why your confused though cause 8-0 sure does look impressive.
I wouldn't be mad if you wanna bump them up a couple notches.Doesn't really matter anyways all that matters is play-offs.
Tom S, aka my #1 fan,
You have to understand a few things:
1) I am not biased toward any school (even my alma mater and they know it best).
2) Maranatha had trouble against La Salle, Rio Hondo Prep and needed OT against winless Kilpatrick, all teams that Temple City and Alhambra likely would win, perhaps with ease.
3) First, it was, 'Why isn't Maranatha ranked?' They're ranked. Next it was, 'Why isn't Maranatha the No. 1 team? Why aren't they ranked higher?' For the record, the Minutemen have not been moved the last couple weeks despite significant movement above and below them in the rankings, meaning Maranatha has been taken into huge consideration when finalizing the weekly rankings. You will agree that the Minutemen were NOT supposed to struggle against the teams I mentioned in point No. 2, and you'd agree your true threat in league should have only been Brentwood, which will be a great game next week.
Your favorite sportswriter,
MM
Miguel
You’ve got to be kidding. How can you put 4 and 4 teams ahead of 8 and 0 Maranatha. Man, I give up trying to figure you out. I guess all we can do is wait for playoffs pairings and see how you rank the team then. Also, lets see what happens after the game against Brentwood on Friday the 14th
Put Maranatha up to 6... ok, some of their wins have not been impressive... but look at the top 25 in college football... do you think Ball State is the 16th best team in the nation? Like Maranatha, Ball State has done what was necessary to win... in every game. Don't penalize the team for their schedule... Its kinda strange defending a team I haven't even seen... but I think they deserve to move up...
Miguel is pretty much right on the money!
See what happens next week.
You got my Vote! Looks good to me..
