.............Biggest surprise this season.............

Geez, only three comments in the "Biggest disappointment this season" thread. Not sure if you guys have lost interest in my flavor or just haven't had time to tune in on the thread. To be honest, I have not been on top of the blog as much as I would have liked as we near the end of the football playoffs. Maybe I'm just being too hard on myself since I have tried to crank out three stories every day, plus the blog and putting together All-Area for football and girls tennis. Nevertheless, I have found this season to be very exciting and now that the first football season is under my belt I know I'll be more in tune and better prepared next season. The first season's always tough, right? Well, not so. Look at the amazing things Ryan Maddox was able to get done at Monrovia. A Rio Hondo League championship and an impressive run to the semifinals. It took a while for Marquise Williams, Nick Bueno, DJ Cole, Kendal Boggs and the rest of the crew to get the Wing-T down but they did and in the process raised the bar for next season. What about Temple City? The Rams also got to the semifinals despite chaos behind the scenes. Who would have known Temple City had two outstanding running backs in senior Joey Stewart and junior Max Rucklke. I'll tell ya, he'll be fun to watch next season. And the Rams return a star-studded line who are only juniors this season. Josh Ouellette is the lone senior. And if he's as good a writer as he is blocking I might be in danger of losing my job in a few years. Rio Hondo Prep has been a bit of a surprise, too. To think the team that started 2-3 heading into the Prep League is a win a way from playing in the CIF State Small Division championship, provided that St. Margaret's and Francis Parker both lose in Saturday's CIF-Southern Section and CIF-San Diego division championship games. What a season.

Jeez, it's unusual to find such a great posting
Love it, put on reddit ;)
I enjoyed reading this. There are bits I agree witha and bits that I don't, it's always interesting to read what people think about making/showing art etc.I won't write any more, as a rule of thumb I like my posts to be shorter than Donald's!
Looking forward for your answer

I like your Blog, the way I enjoy air. Ok just kidding but really good explanations though .
I know, I just thought I would throw the Bulldogs a bone.
Huge accomplishment for Burbank. But we don't cover Burbank.
Burbank (Pacific League's #4 team) winning its first football playoff game since 1927.
Hey Miguel,
Where are the pictures of RHP'S victory?
The only championship in the San Gabriel Valley and all we get as Star news subscribers is an after-thought of a story? Clearly you have not seen them play in person.
Smart, disciplined and full of CorazoƱ! That's the story!
Poor judgment on your part.
Even Ben Bolch of the LA Times covered RHP and you have them in your back yard and your coverage is of a Rosemead loss???
Where is your balance?
Even a B/W page 2 photo would have been acceptable but to relegate the only champion in 20 square miles to the "B" story coverage is just poor news paper-work.

I agree with you Baseball God... The Kares were amazing..these past three games have been exciting
to watch...The Kares defense was on fire..The last
three schools that they played, had star running backs
that had well over 1800 yards rushed and the Kares
defense kept each one of them to a 100
yards...pure domination! Congratulations Rio!!

Congratulations to Rio Hondo from the under-rated Prep League for winning the championship over Riverside Christian 13-6.
and how bout san marino making the play offs? this was a good year for you guy's league...
Blair losing record was truly suprising....had such high hopes for those athletes, but it was not suprising that they beat SPas- they should have beat a lot more teams.
Miguel, this is a far more positive thread than the "Disappointments" thread.
Surprises in no particular order, subject to amendment:
-- RHL playoff pairings/seedings.
-- TC semi-finals appearance after losing their head coach.
-- Rosemead in the finals.
-- Azusa's overall season (not really our area).
-- Blair beating South Pas.
-- Monrovia salvaging the season after a bumpy start.
Stang Fan,
Looking back, could anything have been done differently to affect the end result? Was weak league play a factor, did the "twice in one season" mojo play a role, what do you think?
I know I learned some things this season, met some good people, and saw some high school kids do some amazing things. 5 years ago, I cared little for high school football....but the closer you get to it, the more it infects you....in a good way, I think.
If Rosemead is able to get a win Saturday, it should really cap an outstanding 2008 for area football. Looking at 09, it could get even better.
