Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, All-Area selections

*This post is not limited to only football. Chime in on girls volleyball, boys water polo, cross country and girls tennis.*
We're a few weeks away from publishing our All-Area team as well as our coach of the year and player of the year. (What do you guys think about a Mr. SGV award? Just a though)
The conversation about who should be player and coach of the year have been discussed here in the office and you'd be surprised if I told you what people are whispering. When I was at the OC Register I had my own criteria for picking my All-County soccer and tennis teams. What criteria should be used here? I'll be making my selections next week but here's your chance to have your say on the Best 11 this side of the 626.

I usually don’t reply lying on web-sites nevertheless you contain a quantity of first-rate readable article.
What a release to determine a page that possibly will be ultimately in actuality significance reading! I’ve been looking for all-around in relation to this issue except men and women just put rubbish posts, or short meaningless article. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.
There seems to a lot of discussion about Mayfield (Div IIIA) and La Canada (Div IIA). Lets acknowledge both schools had great volleyball seasons. Each school has outstanding coaches and dedicated players. I am addressing Galetti's comments in which he compares the two schools and not drawing any conclusion which school has the better program. I merely point out facts that may debate Galetti feelings.
The powerhouse comment by Galetti seems to dismiss the fact when Mayfield played DivIIAA or higher schools Mayfield won more than they lost while LC played at .500. The DivIIAA schools Mayfield played had a combined winning percentage of .713 compared to .675 for IIAA schools on LC's schedule. Whatever algorithm Maxpreps uses it rates Mayfield a higher strength of schedule compared to LC. Galetti goes on to say the Rio Hondo League is tougher than the Prep League. Five teams from the Prep League made CIF playoffs with three teams going to Qtrs and two to Semis with Mayfield winning the division. Three teams in the Rio Hondo league made CIF playoffs with two teams losing in the first round and LC winning the division. According to CIF the RHL overall combined won-loss is 53-54 (.495%) with the Prep League at 75-50 (.600).
With all this, Mayfield's Ernest Banaag for coach of the year and Carlson (MVP), Sweeney, Aragon and Scharer for all area players. This core group of player have compiled a 50-9 record and two CIF Championships over the last two years.
Congratulations to both Mayfield and La Canada on a great season.
SGaletti - just for the record, with the exception of Cathedral Catholic with an enrollment of over 1,800 students (who went on to win the Div III State Championship) - Mayfield did not lose any games this year to a Div III opponent. All of Mayfield's losses were against Div I or Div II powerhouse teams - same as LC.
So, while it is a good point that Mr. Turner should win because LC did not lose except to powerhouse teams, the same point is true for Mayfield. This coupled with all of the other reasons mentioned below clearly puts Mr. Banaag above the field when it comes to Coach of the Year.
I personally think that Tim Loya should get it, he took a team that no one though would go any where in the playoffs and went to the semi's for this first time in almost tne years. He is a brilliant mind and he knew how to use all the weapons he had on offense.Max Preps.com is the absolute best place to go for your all area selection becuase not every player has gotten alot of publicity. the coaches really overlook the stats to make sure they are accurate. thats they way it should go

Dear Mr. Melendez,
For what it's worth, this has been a unique year for Mayfield Senior School, where all 3 fall sports (volleyball, cross-country & tennis) won league and were very successful at the C.I.F. and State playoff level.
There is something special happening at that small school that just last year celebrated its 75th year in Pasadena.
Anon, I said there are a couple of exceptions, but overall, it's not a strong league.
Oh Mr. Galetti, it takes so much more than one player to make a volleyball team.
Also, you might have upset most of the Prep league teams with the comment that "Mayfield is in the Prep League where there isn't a lot of high quality volleyball..." You are mistaken, there is great competition in the Prep League. I commend each of the teams in the Prep League for a great season especially Webb and Polytechnic - they came "out of nowhere" and will have a great 2009 season.
Before this goes too much further let me say a few things.
1. Obviously the LC coaches have done an outstanding job and because of their efforts they have trained and inspired their team to an outstanding result.
2. I have nothing but respect for the job that Brock Turner has done and I think he will have a lot of success in the years to come.
3. I don't have any disagreement with the choice of Shelli Orlandini for Coach of the Year last year. This award was definitely supported by her efforts and the solid program at Sacred Heart.
I am not sure how the Coach of the Year is decided, but if you look at the year that the teams have had, the state of the Volleyball programs in general, and the quality of Volleyball being played relative to the size of the School - I think Ernest Banaag is clearly the right choice this year.
SGaletti - that would be a good point if Mayfield had just won the Prep League, but in fact they did much more than that. They won the Prep league with a 12 - 0 record, and then they went on and won the CIF-SS losing only 1 game in the process. LC twice went to 5 games in CIF-SS. Mayfield and LC both won the first round of State handily and then lost in the Quarterfinals but Mayfield lost to a school more than 3 times their size.
Mayfield doesn't have just one stud player, they are solid from top to bottom. Their starting 6 would start on any team in the San Gabriel Valley.
All of this because of the program that has been put together by the Mayfield Coaches and Athletic Director.
Also - I totally disagree that Sacred Heart wasn't expected to win last year. With the talent they had they were definitely expected to win.
So I don't really get many of the points you are trying to make.
Actually, Sacred Heart's volleyball team wasn't expected to go as far as it did. They were in a tough league and division so nothing was a given. Mayfield is in the Prep League where there isn't a lot of high quality volleyball with the exception of a couple of teams that are head and shoulders above the rest.

SGaletti - The point was not that they could beat Sacred Heart's team from last year. Sacred Heart's team was expected to win last year and they did. Mayfield's team was expected to win this year (according to you) and they also did. Sacred Heart's coach won the Coach of the Year award last year and likewise Mayfield's Coach should win this year.
Mayfield's program has improved greatly and even though they were moved up a Division they still did much more than was expected of them. This should be recognized and Mr. Banaag should be Coach of the Year.
RClancy: You bring up last year. There is no way last year's Mayfield team comes close in a match against Flintridge Sacred Heart. FSH was loaded and it took a team more loaded to beat them in the CIF finals.
I'm not knocking Mayfield. They have a solid team, but in the divisions they've played in, yes, one stud player can make a difference. The difference between upper and lower divisions in volleyball (boys and girls) is like night and day, moreso than any other sport.
No doubt---Ernest Banaag for best coach---amazing job
JJ
I totally agree w/ you on that POY award. There is nobody in this area that deserves that award more than Tra Sumler. Not only is he the best Rb in the area, he's probably even better on defense. He is just an all-around great FOOTBALL PLAYER! MVP
And another thing...
Last year Mayfield was not expected to win CIF, but they did - Did Ernest get the Coach of the Year then - NO! - it went to Shelli Orlandini from Sacred Heart - whose team was EXPECTED to do very well and they delivered. Last year Sacred Heart had the Player of the Year and two on the First team.
If the Pasadena Star News is interested in being consistent then Mr. Banaag is the clear choice. Susan Carlson should be the Player of the Year, and I would think Megan Sweeney and Rachel Aragon would be on the first team at a minimum.
SGaletti - that is precisely why Ernest Banaag should be Coach of the Year, because Mayfield jumped up a division and still won CIF. Susan Carlson is an awesome player, but you cannot win CIF with only 1. Ernest brought together a group of girls and made them into a team.
No question LC had a great season and with a lot of their talent returning next year, if they win CIF again, then it should go to their coach next year.
If Tra Sumler from the 'Mead doesnt get POY for football then its a joke....sorry.
The other reason I'd say turner is that Mayfield, with Carlson, regardless of the division (still small school division) was expected to win another CIF title. I don't think there were too many people out there picking La Canada to win a CIF title. And each of La Canada's losses were to powerhouses. They didn't lose to anyone else.
Ernest Banaag
Definitely Mayfield's Ernest Banaag
There is no question that Ernest Banaag should be Coach of the Year - he has two Mayfield CIF championships in different divisions. He clearly LEADS and motivates this team. Ernest Banaag is the best coach because of his dedication to the team. Dave Spence is terrific but he is a JV Coach - a terrific JV coach.
Player of the Year - clearly Susan Carlson. The Senior players make this 2008 team - Susan Carlson, Megan Sweeney, Hayley Hoffman, Michelle Gibson and Julie Ashiman. I am with Jack Blumenthal with Susan Carlson for volleyball player of the year and Megan Sweeney for all area player. They are great leaders.
Eric Sun for Coach of the Year.
In only his 2nd year at Mayfield, he was able to transform the Mayfield Cross Country team from last place (a couple of years ago) and this year he brought them to 1st place in the Prep division, and 2nd place in the CIF finals, and 3rd place in State. Very impressive, and an obvious strong reason why he should be Coach of the Year!
It is difficult to compare LC vs. Mayfield because LC has a much larger pool of girls to choose from. LC is somewhere around 1,400 - 1,500 students, if you figure 1/2 are girls then 700 - 750 whereas Mayfield is just over 300.
In my opinion what makes Mayfield's accomplishments this year MUCH more impressive, is that they were moved from Division IV to Division III and they still won CIF-SS losing only 1 game in the CIF-SS playoffs.
No question that LC is a fantastic team that had a great year, but, in my biased opinion Mayfield's accomplishments this year surpass LC's.
Both teams made it to the Quarterfinals in the State competition but Mayfield's road in CIF was more impressive also.
I'd give my vote to Brock Turner. Considering all seven losses came to powerhouses, I'd say the Spartans held serve in matches against like competition. Nothing against Mayfield and Susan Carlson probably is the best player in the SGV this year, but La Canada had an overall tougher schedule, even in the RHL.
The rankings are impressive as well.
National Ranking
La Canada 133
Mayfield 372
State Ranking
La Canada 26
Mayfield 69
Section Ranking
La Canada 14
Mayfield 37.
when is the all pacific league football team coming out
and when is all area coming out?
Cross Country is not all about the numbers. The best runners don't face each other until the nationals this weekend. There are several stories of excellent XC athletes (not just from Arcadia) Pons at So Pas, Williams at LaSalle and Weitkamp at Prep. They all should have consideration.
I would like to nominate Susan Carlson for volleyball player of the year and Megan Sweeney for all area player. Both are seniors on our Mayfield CIF champion team.
How do you want us to pick some of the players? Are you going based on their stats or are you going on how they played every game this year. Should we check Maxpreps.com for stats I think they have the best and most accurate stats for high school football.
(What do you guys think about a Mr. SGV award? Just a though)
How about Ms. SGV? If you are looking for someone who has improved sports in the SGV all around then Lynda Gilbert is a clear choice. She has built a very strong sports program at Mayfield and works incredibly hard to support the teams.
League Champs in Tennis, Cross Country and Volleyball. CIF SS Champs in Volleyball and runner-up in Cross Country. CIF State quarterfinals in Volleyball and 3rd overall in Cross Country.
All of this from a very small school
OK thanks, you can call me r =).
Where to start -
Volleyball Coach of the year - Originally I nominated Ernest Banaag and I still think he would be a good choice, but, I think something unusual is in order - and that would be my nomination of Dave Spence. I know Dave Spence is a JV Coach and so may not be considered normally, but this is Dave's last year at Mayfield and I think he deserves special consideration because of all the time and effort he has given to Mayfield and because of the incredibly strong program that he has been a big part in building at Mayfield. Mayfield's volleyball program has to be considered the best or one of the 2 or 3 best in this area and Dave has helped train many of the girls that make up this team. If you consider Dave ineligible then I would nominate Ernest for many of the same reasons.
Volleyball Player of the Year - Susan Carlson - I think the choice is pretty clear and very obvious. Susan dominates the game and pushes the whole team to excel.
Volleyball All-Area - The whole Mayfield team - can't argue with their success - being moved up a division and still winning CIF-SS easily (only lost 1 game in CIF playoffs).
Cross Country Coach of the Year - Eric Sun
Eric has led the Mayfield program to their best finish ever - 3rd in the State of CA!!!
Cross Country Player of the Year and All Area - I think with XC you can just look at the numbers and whoever is best should be named. It seems to me that this is less subjective than the other sports.
Tennis Coach of the Year - I have not spent any time with the Tennis Coaches at Mayfield so the only think I would have to go on is their record, which is outstanding. So, I would nominate Christine Sauceda.
Player of the Year - Adriana Diakite was dominant for Mayfield certainly and led the team with an incredible win against their league rival Chadwick and in many other wins throughout their season. She should definitely be in the running for Player of the Year.
All-Area - I only saw a few tennis matches this year so the only nominations I would have would be Adriana Diakite and Laura Wade. Hopefully I will get to more matches next year.
Go Cubs!!
What BigMLover said, plus expand to add that Maddox installed a new offense scheme and defensive scheme with new players.
COY = Ryan Maddox
He started late...implemented a new O and D...with a supposedly depleted roster...and has them 2 wins away from Monrovia's first CIF football championship!
'nuff said.
For all sports, Mr. Clancy =)
Is this just for football - or is this for Volleyball, Tennis and Cross Country as well??
