Coaching update: Pasadena sorting through resumes

| | Comments (15) |

Just got off the phone with Pasadena High athletic director Tony Brooks. After talking about basketball we dove into the football coaching vacancy. I tried to get names but no dice.

Brooks on how far along Pasadena is in the hiring process:

"We're looking to get the interview process in January. We've opened it up and people are turning in resumes. We're getting a lot of interest including from people back East. What we'll do is put a committee together which will consist of administrators, teachers, coaches and a returning player and maybe a parent."

Brooks on when Pasadena will make the hire:

"We want to get something done by February because that's the start of the second semester. You don't want to wait too long."

Brooks on whether the vacancy will come with a teaching position:

"Right now, hopefully it will. That'll attract more interest but that has to be solidified through the principal to try to fit that. It's always nice to have the person on campus in some capacity."

Brooks on who has applied (Brooks was asked for specific names but no luck):

"A few locals, but when we get down a little more serious - this is just collection process - and when we get down to some serious applicants and finalists I'll be happy to divulge."

In the words of Kevin Mills, stay tuned.

Truth be told, there are a lot of exceptional candidates applying for the Head Coaching position at Pasadena High School. Present company... ah candidate included. It is my prayer that if I do not get the job that who ever the committee selects, that they take a genuine interest in the development and preparation of the boys for Division I college ball.

I coached at PHS this past year for the first time and observed boys that are longing for the heart and soul of football. The talent at PHS is incredible and PHS really needs a Head Coach that understands what it takes succeed in an undergraduate environment and major college ball.

PS. I prefer to use my name as a candidate for the job at all times because Pasadena deserves transparency and I dislike those other candidates that come on this site who hide behind a screen name. Man up gentlemen!

Need to pull the trigger on this before semester break. Do it in time to prevent further talent exodus and possibly attract some transfers.

I totally agree with you. At this point i'm going to keep in contact with Tony and continue to have input. The school does feel like no matter who they hire there's going to be some kind of outcry if public favorites are not hired. Like I expressed to Tony do what's best for Pasadena high now and in the future, because nothing but God is a sure thing, and you can't please everyone.

I can understand not divulging specific names, BUT they should be transparent about what process they are following. Don't let him keep you in the dark, MADD DOG.

I've only talked to Brooks in passing about the coaching position and what process are they going to use. His answers just like with Miguel very vague. Word has it that they are waiting for one person inparticular to become available, but getting conformation of that is like tring to get info out of fort knox. He has been made aware how important this new hire is going to be for several reasons. If they hire either of the 2 applicants I know about expect to see the bulldogs turned around very quickly, and the roster will be full of football players not just kids weariing uniforms. I will say this anything better than these two and expect to see us in the playoffs next season with a legit shot.

MADD DOG,
Who is on the selection committee? Are any parents involved? Don't let the AD or Principal jam something down your throats.

I don't Think Pasadena is "REALLY" giving much conderation to its' football program at this moment. Basketball seems to be the priority at HS.

Remember, the current AD is a former Bball player and as long as their winning league titles and competing for c.i.f championships, the feeling is all the other sports can take a back seat.

Look at the fact that Damien just hired its' new head man. This gives him time to come in get familiar with the campus, talk to teachers and make an impression with some of the atheletes who may be debating on wether they should participate in football or not.

I know personally of 2 canadites who applied that could make a serious impact on the program. I think they should make a decision soon as possible this will have an effect on other sports. My son is working out in hopes that he doesn't have to transfer. This will be his first year playing for the dogs. He didn't like the previous coach so I elected for him to sit out, the same thing a few other parents did. Getting the "new guy" in now could create alot of new energy that could be carried on into spring practice.

I hope they do the right thing and not procrastinate. I understand by adding a Teacher position would make the position more appealing, but the ones who've already applied are ready to get things started now.

ALL RHL STANDOUTS

I probably left out 50 deserving names, but here is a first shot, based on some memory, some Max Preps and some of the non-disputable fact I am a TC supporter.
Please add names of those you feel strongly about - rather than skewering me one last time before football fades into the cold sunset. O-line is a little tough due to lack of hardcore stats. Peace.

QB - Hatch, Bednarski

RB - Williams, Dooley, Ruckle

WR - Colliau, Bruno-Lopez, Yortsos

LB - Conora, Weston (LC), Vasquez (Mon) Brown (Blair)
Pinkerton (LC) Michael (Mon)Lowden (Mon)

DB - Yortsos (SM) Dunn (TC) Jones (Mon) GBL (TC)
McTivish (So Pas) Barron (Blair) Cano (TC)

DL - Chu (LC) Swarzbaugh (TC) Gonzalez (LC) Winfrey (Mon) Harwich (SM) Watkins (TC) Calver (Mon)

OL - Ouelette (TC) Lee (LC) McMahon (SM) Lumary(C)(TC)
Calver (Mon) Lind (So Pas) O'Malley (TC) Harwich (SM)

Utility - Joey Stewart (11 TD's 848 yds rushing, 328 yds receiving) Avg. 9 tackles per game, 3 sacks, 3 int,

Offensive Player of the Year - Marquise Williams
Defensive Player of the Year - Nick Conora

Coach of the Year - Maddox (Mon)
Asst./Interim HC of the year - Loya (TC)

Someone who knows said:

When Mills moved over from Blair as the PHS football coach, it was over the objection of the Athletic Director at the time.

Nothing would surprise me on who they hire and how they come about that decision. After all, it is the dysfunctional PUSD, and their decision will be based on who is available and acceptable.

forget football.. what about the softball program?? In shambles after ONE parent decided for the entire school who the coach should not be. LUDICROUS MAN !!!!

New York said:

I'm sure it is just the opposite. I'm sure they want a teacher with a Masters Degree.

Knowing Pasadena, they're leaving no halfway house or state pen unturned in their coaching search.
