Saturday Morning Quarterback Postgame: Rosemead edges Monrovia; St. Margaret's blows away Maranatha

| | Comments (244) |

Friday's semifinal scores
Rosemead 16, Monrovia 6 -- What a season for the Wildcats. A lot of people expected them to do little in the Rio Hondo League after a sluggish start but Maddox got things rolling. He was patient, smart and won his players over; they bought into the system that got them all the way into the semifinals of the CIF-SS playoffs. Maddox was not out-coached by no means. Rosemead simply had too much in the trenches and Tra Sumler kept pounding away, en route to 315 yards rushing on an insane 38 carries and two TD's. Aside from one monstrous run (a 66-yard score), Sumler didn't do much but he kept pounding the ball for 5-10 yards that would amount to his insane yards. Neither quarterback was a factor in the game. Marquise Williams rushed for 110 yards on 17 carries and scored a TD. How lucky for the WSGV to have two very good RB's in our back yard.

St. Margaret's 63, Maranatha 0 -- St. Margaret's is just a beast, simply put. Is this game still considered a rivalry? I'll leave that up to you guys to decide. The question now is where is Matt Schilz headed? I hope he goes to a Pac-10 school so we can keep tabs on his career. Good for him to have played injury-free. I wonder how much damage the Minutemen could have done with Schilz in the lineup last year. Joel Murphy is a classy coach and like he said, it's time to look forward to next season. Hope you seniors had the ride of your life.

After watching my UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, I'll head over to Temple City and cover that game. Lots and lots of football for me this week. I can't believe I get paid $$$ for this.

Saturday's semifinal games with predictions:
Paraclete at Temple City, 7 p.m. -- Melendez (Paraclete)
Linfield Christian at Rio Hondo Prep, 7:30 p.m. -- Melendez (Rio Hondo Prep)

Congrats to Rosemead and making it to the Championship game. I knew it would be a close low scoring game, and the team that would execute and make the fewest mistakes would prevail, regardless on who it is. Monrovia this year has nothing to feel down about. Maddox is the answer to Monrovia, and if he doesnt win coach of the year because monrovia was expected to do well, or because we have alot of athletes, then thats a shame. I really think alot of people doubted after the lost to Arcadia, and the lost to Rosemead. But the offense eventually clicked and that is why monrovia went on the winning streak that they did. Congrats to the panthers, but the cats will be back for sure. Who is going to replace Sumler, he was everything to rosemead

I think more than anything Maranatha lost it's strong leadership from the Senior Class like there was in the past. This years class of Seniors did not step up with the exception of probably Koplan and Forester. Other than that, there was not a heck of a lot of passion and leadership coming from the Senior Class. Next year should be better..I hope. At least the number of upperclass starters will increase.

From what I know of the Tartan program, it is run by a number of quality coaches that have been coaching within Southern California for many years at different levels ... These coaches are local, (exception of Welch) and have a good knowledge of the local small school arena and divisional landscape ...

They do run a "tight ship" with a basic theme ... RESPECT their (program/team), their (school) and their (opponents) ... Never take an opponent lightly !! Their daily bible is centered around execution, execution, execution of basic football techniques, "miss-matches" and knowing what their opponents next move will be based on their film reviews ... Their weight training routine is centered around the "complete athlete" that can play several positions and other sports because their team numbers are normally small ... All in all its a "my way or the highway program, yet, its the level of focus that a young student/athlete needs to take on to the next level in LIFE !!

Lastly, parents are "encouraged" support the program; however, they leave the coaching to the professionals with many years of experience and allow them to challenge these young men in ways that they could never imagine outside of football ... If you have never coached before, please understand that this game gives a young man the opportunity to grow in many positive ways ... Remember, "nothing comes easy in life, unless you work for it" !!

I am not going to get started again on here this evening like I did last night. However, I am with Curious as to what you level of coaching would you like over at Maranatha? If it is a coach like Welch, I have read those articles with his kids talking about wanting to quit, because they were being ridiculed and put down, but they stuck it out and become nastier and tougher. Some coaches still believe in the world of tearing down a child until he/she is completely broken and then rebuilding that child in his likeness and his "theory".
Now is that what you want? Your child out on the field to be ridiculed and put down and then brought back to hate the opponent, hit late, and do anything by any means the coach tells you. Even if there is no ETHIC or MORAL to the action???!!!!
Harry Welch teaches the wrong kind of football! Yes, he wins! But the ultimate price he wins by and what he teaches and his method of motivating (making crap stories) his kids is completely unethical!!
I'm done!

MHS fan,

You claim to go to practices and games so I assume that you have a son that plays either on the JV or Varsity, correct?

My question to you is simple; you state that you don’t want to offend by any means any of the current coaches but that new coaching is needed. Well, do you really think that a “Welch” style football program/philosophy would cut it at MHS? Assuming that you are a parent, are you down with a coach getting into your kid’s grill and challenging him to step up his game? Can you stand on the side lines and let coaches do their jobs or will you be the first to go run to the Head master and make a formal complaint. I guarantee you sir, that if you spent any time down in the OC, you will quickly find out the coaches coach, players listen and most importantly parents stay out of the way.

I’m afraid to inform you sir, that’s just not the direction MHS wants to be headed at this moment. I will agree that coaching changes need to take place on both levels but what type of coach is going to want to come to a program with the knowledge that mommy and daddy can step at any time and put a stop to what is going on…..please enlighten me with your wisdom….

All the Maranatha talk about "dirty Harry" is human nature but it is counter productive for your boys and for your team. Welch is a football coach by trade and he is very successful as shown by his record and durability. Every coach teachs how to hold, chop, intimidate, and gain any advantage over your opponent.
He may cross the line when concocting quotes attributed to you QB but lets not pretend Matt is not cocky enough to let something like that slip. Most likely Matt was trying to fire up his own team, another trait of a leader.

Welch drills and drills the basics into every player that comes out for his team. St. M has a few exceptional players, the rest are simply drilled and prepared so that they play above their respective skill set. From what I understand, Maranatha has more kids going on to play college ball than St. M and that speaks volumes. Maranatha just needs to work better with the talent it gets, it is that simple. Boys coming into 9th grade with flag ball experience have two years to learn the game and at a level like Div. 12 this is more than enough if coached properly. No one enrolls at MHS with plans to using it as a springboard for D1 and the pros, that is what Oaks Christian and Mater Dei is for.

I did not mean to offend and believe me, ANY coach at ANY level is going to be hard pressed to beat a Harry Welch coached team. However as a lifelong fan of the game that has watched many Maranatha practices and games I think the program has grown so fast with the opening of the new school that I think it is time to raise the bar on the coaching staff.

Ex coach said:

I would just let all these negative feelings go and try and focus on what your program has achieved this past season and the opportunities that next season will bring. Regardless of the (coaches, gloves, refs, comments, etc.) this game was not meant to be and Maranatha was out played in many ways.

For the seniors on this team, they have had some amazing years that will be memories forever. Good, Bad and/or Ugly, its your high school years that will be remembered for many years to come. Save these moments and remember the teammates that shared them with you !!

Look I have no dog in this fight... I just hate when people flat out lie!!! It is painfully obvious that Matt never said those things. No one can produce an internet link to show the "rivals article" that mentions these quotes. I'm a Rivals subscriber and it does not exist! Some fan writes some sentences on this blog and calls it a quote?? Get real my 10 year old could have written that trash. This has nothing to do with how poorly Maranatha played last week. It has has everything to do with an article that never existed and a coach who exploited a high school player for his own gains...class act Harry.

Sir, you have class over flowing and I hope your program is filled with success that matches your class!
As far as the re-inserting players. It was defensively toward the end of the 4th when Maranatha was actually starting to threaten a possible score. I think #4 was doing a job on the inserted #28(?) and Welch put back in #6. He also reinserted several others....
All in all, Maranatha was down and doomed way earlier than that!
I thank you for your time.
Great luck and success to you and your program!

Fact Checker thank you for the correction on the sideline situation. I stand corrected with that. But does the visiting team have the "right" to claim their side or not? Curios with that? Not arguing just curios.
You mention the glove situation but the crew from Strong Beach needs to be consistent: why is it that the BLUE colored gloves on St. Maggies side were allowed? The ref had stated - "only black and grey". Blue is not black or grey last time I checked. I would generally say that is not here nor there, However, it was cold and that rule had not been checked at any other point in the playoffs. Not to mention that also affects the receivers and d.b. with ball control!!!
Now to the offensive line shifting. Yes, I can remember the Cowboys under Landry doing that. You said that St. Maggies feet never came off the ground? I beg to differ. I have the game on video. YES their feet came off the ground and not just once or twice. I know they can go from a two point stance down, however without foot movement!
And yes you are 100 percent correct about the Minutemen coming off the field taking their helmets off before getting to their sidelines.
Let's talk about the Tartan player that was down (no official timeout or St. Maggies timeout). The ref. after about 45 seconds helped him up and then helped what look like get his helmet straightened out and even dusted some of the "turf" off his jersey (okay that last part was sarcasm). The point is that should have been an official 'injury" timeout with the player appearing to be hurt and down for an amount of time. Instead, the official did help him up and helped him with his equipment and this all took more than a minute of time. Not to mention the Tartan player never left the field! Seems a little odd??? Wouldn't you think?
But like everyone else including myself says.... Marantha was horrid!

I can't defend a coach putting starters back in once he has pulled them. Obviously, special teams are a different story. At our small schools, as you probably know, you don't have too many players to use in some special teams instances. I don't know what starters you are referring to though. Sometimes, you might pull a kid from offense and have him still playing defense or vice versa. I can't comment on the specific situations or starters that you are referring to because I didn't see it.
I would not agree with pulling starters and then re-inserting them because you want to maintain a shut out or because your back ups aren't getting the job done.
I don't support that type of coaching for many reasons.
Bloodsport, please email me at cfore@cvcs.org if you would like to dialogue further about this because I don't like getting in to long discussions on here, would rather do that in private and always love talking high school football!

Fact Checker said:

1. St. Margarets has had the visiting team on that sideline for AT LEAST 10 years. (Long before Harry got there.) One AD at Margarets years ago told me that they did it so that their fans could be closer to their own team. Made sense then when he told me that. Many schools do this. No rule about it - state, CIF, NFHS wise. It is called HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE. Brethren Christian does it, Rio Hondo Prep does it, etc.
2. The chain crew is ALWAYS on the visiting side.
3. The officials crew was from the Long Beach Officials Association. In the playoffs, you get crews from outside of your own playing district. So, those crews had nothing to do with the other two Maranatha games and the glove situation. It may have been a point of emphasis for the Long Beach area this year or something.
They could demand the gloves to come off for a variety of reasons. I saw that happen and was also wondering why. It was half way through the first quarter though - I remember it clearly, it was the second defensive drive that Maranatha had on about the 30 yard line with about 7 minutes on the clock in the first quarter.
4. The offensive line shifting is not illegal. You mentioned that they are set and then "unset" themselves. They never "set before coming up." They are in a 2 point stance which you could consider set "until they shift." They shift into a 3 point stance, which is legal and has been used by teams at all levels since Notre Dame put it in and would shift their backs into a box formation when the linemen all stood. St. Maggies doesn't move their feet at all when they do it.
I am an inpartial high school football fan, not a fan of either team.
Just stating some facts here. I was pretty blown away that St. Margarets completely dismantled Maranatha. I didn't think that Maranatha was ready to go.
As soon as I saw them stretching and lazily putting on their pads, etc. they looked like they were getting ready for a scrimmage.
By the way, the rule violated the most the other night were the Minutemen taking off their helmets before they got to the sidelines. Most linemen were taking their helmets off near the numbers on their way to the sidelines. Illegal to take your helmet off on the field in high school football.

Thank you for that! It is nice to know that Welch would call and ask how he could help. In your situation, that is admirable as well as respected. He must have some kindness in his heart towards you.
However, that still doesn't explain a coach that is up by 63 points to RE-INSERT his starters!!! So please try standing up for him in this instance. Please do that!!!
So maybe he has a different "respect" for you or different levels of it.
But at the end of the day he is a coward and uses his kids to do his dirty work.
Yes, he does have those kids getting to the ball and has them on the right track with execution but look outside the "coaches" box.
Maranatha stunk on friday night without a doubt. However, with that aside, Welch has deserved the reputation he has garnered... not the one as a winner, but the one that will win at all cost and then run it in your face!

Arliss said:

Realizing all the comments on here about "dirty" Harry, listen....
He is definitely a very very well respected coach with a lot of pull and does have his boys shaking in their cleats to do what is asked. Is that wrong? Not really as long as that is taught with character. Do I think he teaches character? NOPE! I was at the game on friday. I watched his stud the D.B. #6 get a flag (amazing that even happened) he got it for holding Maranatha's #4. That disrespectful punk kid went over and started arguing with the ref about the call. He said he could hold and bump at 7 yards(maybe in harry's world). Instilling character isn't teaching your athlete to argue a mute point! I didn't see one Maranatha football player argue one bad call or one call at all... and there were A LOT of them.
I mentioned earlier about respect that Welch gets... so much that I watched Maranatha players throwing their gloves to the sideline in mass numbers. I finally found out what that was about around halftime. It was because some of them were wearing red and black gloves (which match their uniforms) and they were not allowed any color other than black or grey. Weird how they went through two other playoff games with none of that as a problem. Oh did I mention that some of Harry's boys had blue gloves! But oddly enough that didn't seem to be a problem! Don't tell me Harry doesn't have pull!
What about how the offensive linemen get set and and then lift not only one foot of the ground but sometimes two before the snap(in trying to pull the defensive offsides). That would be okay, but that is a false start (the arm pull movement is legal.. but not the foot/feet movement).... did they call that all night or in any other game St. Maggies has played? NOPE!!! Now is that the power and respect Welch gets? Hmmmm They were a lot of bad bad bad calls. Maybe I should rephrase that- there were too many inconsistent calls all night and in mass numbers!
I'm still trying to figure out if placing the visiting team on the home side of the field is legal... or classless. Especially when the true visitors side(where St. Margaret's team is) has no stands or bleachers and is perfectly quiet. Therefore, no noise with those rowdy fans (which I am actually jealous of. Too bad Maranatha fans aren't as fun and rowdy), I wonder if there is a rule to that? If the visitors can actually go and claim their true side. Even though they got stuck on the home side, they still had the chains there too. Power of Welch? Or just more mind games? Pretty good stuff, know that I think about it!
Now at the end of the day without all the discrepencies (sp?), refs, late hits, and the power of Dirty Harry... Maranatha would have lost PERIOD with the kind of play they brought!
I am excited for their freshman running back he is going to do amazing things while in highschool. Much better I think than the starting running back. The freshman was fun to watch and seems to be very grounded with his comments.
Good luck to both programs in the future. But I do hope "dirty" Harry gets ten fold of the dirtiness thrown back at him. He has shown very little class to many programs! At some point, some team is going to retaliate on his players for all the "bad things (hitting low at the knees ,late, and talking trash first, false articles) and him running up the score and being just pure classless! Unfortunately, one of his kids is going to get hurt - when it should be Welch that gets hurt. Stop now Harry and teach some character before you get one of your boys hurt from retaliation!

I am the Head Coach of Capistrano Valley Christian. We were the opponent of the Tartans during their homecoming game this year when they beat us 72-0.
You accused them of running up the score in this game. I am curious to know if you were there or not?
I can tell you that the score was not run up by Coach Welch and the Tartans.
In fact, they could have easily scored 120 points on us that night if they wanted to.
I have a strong believe that you play one half of football, no matter the score, as hard as you can and score as many points as you can in that first half. Then, in the second half, for respect of your opponent and the game, start to back off, put in subs, etc.
The only reason that I am responding and posting here is because I believe that coaches should stick up for one another when they are attacked on these things. Just like I will stand up for Coach Murphy, he is a great Coach and if there are parents on his back, as this board insinuates, they should back off because that man is doing an outstanding job as a Christian coach, from what I know.
Here are a few facts from our game with the Tartans - they scored on four of their first five PLAYS because we were horrible at tackling. Period. We couldn't block and we couldn't tackle! It was 28-0 five minutes in to the game. We went three and out most of the night. They threw no passes after about half way through the second quarter. If you were at our Maranatha game, you saw how bad we were this year!!
During the week leading up the game, I had several talks with Coach Welch about our game. He asked me what he could do "so that both teams leave the field respectfully and respecting each other." By the way, Coach Murphy and I had the same talks leading up to our game. Because of the Christian values we both share, I knew that he would not let our score get out of hand either.
We lost another game by more than 70 points and that team didn't handle it with nearly the same class that St. Margarets did.

That article is bogus and non scripted! I know Matt and he has more class and wouldn't say ANYTHING like that! It is so typical of a man of Welch's character to come up with that crap!
Funny that so many posters are correct about both Maranatha and St. Maggies. You all have many points that are valid (the good and the bad). However, amazingly enough, when I hear that Welch was putting in his non-starters... uh-yeah, for about 2 plays when Maranatha was starting a positive drive he quickly pulled them out and replaced them with his freaking starters.... that was when they were up 63-0! Pathetic to back a man with that character. This is the same man, that had the game won the week prior against Yucca Valley and with less than a minute remaining should have taken a knee with a 17-6 lead and of course continued trying to score! Oh wait he did the same on friday against Maranatha. 72-0 at his homecoming game!!! These are children under his wing that he is teaching this too. Hey I love to see my teams win, but what does it say about a coach that purposefully runs up scores!???!!!

Best of luck to your program and as I said before, everything runs in cycles ... Every program has their day in the sun through "commitment to excellence" ... Look how Fillmore has turned their program around after such a dry spell ... As for being on your blog, I have family up there, in (Pasadena) who have keeping me in-the-loop ... The quote, was passed along to me from a parent to what was said !!

Hey tartanpride,

Most of us have moved on regarding comments made or not made by Matt. I personally have not been able to find his comments on rivals.com (send me the link) If he did shoot his mouth off like that shame on him, if it was fabricated shame on your coach. Thanks for surfing the Pasadena blog but I’m sure you guys over in the OC can find better things to do with your Sunday afternoon. This really is an in house situation that we here at MHS need to rectify ASAP in order for us to be able to be competitive against any team that we meet during the season and post season, not necessarily St. Maggie’s. Good luck to your team next week, I have no doubt that your staff will have your boys ready and your boys will step on the field with only one goal in mind……winning back to back to back CIF Championship…..

MHS for life said:

I totally disagree with you, MHS does not need smarter and more discipline players, they need MORE DEDICATED players willing to give up their I-pods, my space profiles and their endless summers and replace it with hard work that consist of hitting the weight room at least 3 days a week, putting on weight and working on their speed and agility. Do you really think a quality program is started in July? Remember MHS does not even conduct a Spring ball session because they have to share the field with the other sports on campus. Please, I hear what you are saying but make sure you dot all your I’s and cross all your T’s before coming on here and making the type of statement you just made. Believe me it’s been no fun getting bounced the last two years by St. Maggie’s but until we are able to change the perception in the minds of the students/parents of MHS, not even a hall of fame type coach would be able do anything more than Murphy has done in the last 3 years…….

BOTTOM-LINE:

The Tartans showed-up Friday night and executed their game plan ...Cards fell the way they fell and the results were there towards leaving "no question" who was the best team this time around ...

As for the QB comments, they are there in "black and white" and he made his feelings be known in public ...

(Quote from Rivals.com interview):

Schilz feels St.Margaret's is a good football team but not great. "Who have they played?" says Schilz. "St Margaret's has yet to play a team like us. They have a "couple of good corners" but their linebackers are "mediocre at best. I've seen on film, nothing special. If I can't put up 4 or 5 touchdowns against these guys something is wrong."

TIME TO MOVE ON !!

Hey everyone. I have said all along that coach Murphy is a great coach. He is young and still learning like several of the coaches at Maranatha but he is moving the program in the right direction. We just need to learn from watching...and yes even the players were watching...St.Margarets and the kinds of things they do to accomplish the goals they have. Our kids and coaches just need to grow up. St. Margarets just had smarter and more disciplined coaches and kids!!!

Welch ran up the score? Were you at the game? Their QB had 12 total passes (60 yds.) for the entire night. SM had 3 touchdowns in the 2nd half, 2 running and 1 was a fumble recovered for a touchdown. They threw 2 times in the second half. They emptied their bench midway through the 3rd quarter and our "1st string" still could not score. Stop being bitter, baseball is just around the corner.

MinutemanAlum said:

I still dont think anyone is going after Murphy, 95% of the parents and players love the guy. The only issue I was curious about was the quote.

We lost yes (and in a big way), I just wanted to protect Schilz from what was negative publicity that Coach Harry stated. No one ever did find that article where Schilz was supposed to state that Maggies was "nothing special" and I felt it was distasteful of a role model coach to lie in order to motivate his team. Running up the score is his perogotive.

I wish the St. Maggies team all the best and hope they get to the Small School State Bowl.

Next year is already in the planning I am sure and we'll get there one day.

MARANATHA FAITHFUL:

All this trash talk about Coach Murphy is bogus ... He has taken your program to another level and just has not been able to win it all, (yet) ... Be PROUD of your accomplishments over these past few years and build on them ... Your time will come as it has come for the Tartans ... Its only been a few years now that our program has seen this level of success ... Small school programs are only as good as the athletes that are there (year-in and year-out) and it truly goes in cycles.

The TARTANS have been extremely blessed with a group of student/athletes that want to commit to this game of football ... Many of our team are actually (1st year players) who decided to go out and test the waters ... There is no question that the winning streak helps create interest in our program ... But remember, we too are a small school with roughly forty-plus players in our entire program and every year it is a challenge to fill a team ... Many of our kids play (2-3 sports), which is a challenge in its own right ... As for our coaching staff, most all are local businessmen who give their time, (roughly eight months a year) to creating the environment for these young men ... Its not for the pay and truly for the love of the sport !!

Lastly, Coach Welch landed at SMES on as a "surprise gift" because he was looking for a chance to be near his family, (daughters/grandchildren) who live in Orange County and San Diego ... Nothing more, nothing less !! There was not magical recruitment of this coach and just plain luck for us ... We of course are extremely pleased he has decided to call SMES his new home and bring his knowledge/experience to the football program and and more importantly the entire school community !!

MHS Supporter,

My comments were not directed at you, but personally I feel if a kid is not getting playing time, it is his responsibility to go to the coach and ask why, not the parent. This is one example of how participation in sports can provide tools for later on in life. I doubt if your (I use your in a pejorative sense) son was denied a promotion at his job that you (pejorative again) would call his boss and ask why. Anyway, I think your entire post is right on point. I am in total agreement that when a coach sees (and they know) less than total commitment and effort from a starter, that the "next" guy on the depth chart at that position should go in, end of story. That "next" guy has been at just as many practices, ran just as many sprints, lifted just as many weights, and more than likely has been on the "scout" team taking a pounding for many months. That kid more than deserves a chance based on his commitment to the team. Parents of a "starter" have no clue what it is like (in school and on the field) for that "next" kid. His world is so different in so many ways. I observed on Friday that St. Maggie’s had 20 of 22 players on offense and defense, e.g., 2 guys went both ways and they were DB's. Everyone had the same socks. Someone posted earlier they looked "uniform". We looked disjointed. I believe St. Maggie’s has a good program because "dirty Harry" runs the show, not the parents. If we let Coach Murphy run the show, I believe great things could be in store for MHS football.

MHS for Life said:

Like I have been saying, we need to change the mindset of the student athlete and parents of MHS in order to build the type of program that will produce a competitive team that steps on the field and competes the entire game against “all” opponents, not just the ones we know we can handle.

Until Murphy is allowed to cross that fine line drawn in the sand, unfortunately MHS loyals this is how it’s going to be. I am in total agreement that when you choose to play a sport, then you should be dedicated to that sport from start to finish and not look for “outs” whenever the moment suits you. Not sure but I heard that a few players “choose” to take family vacations and Disneyland trips the week of Big Bear. How do you except us to beat the likes of St. Maggie’s with that kind of non-commitment? Or better yet, how do you expect Murphy to put a caliber team on the field……

You contradict yourself in your statements. There's no"I" in team is exactly the problem with this team.
There is nothing wrong with a parent expressing how they feel about the TEAM. If they are complaining because there son is not getting to play enough or whatever realated to their son, I understand what you are saying. You pointed to the biggest problem MHS has. There IS no I in Team!!! St. Margaret's showed us what a team does and how it wins. There was no Cheating involved, just incredibly smart play. I'm surprised we have not learned from them by now. Were not going to get it done with some pregmame chant from a movie!! You can't get it done with bigger kids or better athletes. We just need to be a TEAM! Whoever does not play THAT WAY should sit and give someone else a chance. I don't care what their ability is or potential or whatever. I'm sick and tired of lazy effort. Every player on St. Margaret's was involved in EVERY play. We were pathetic!!!

Here is the next day article from OCVarsity.

Offensive line keeps St. Margaret's on track
The Tartans' unit paves the way for an unstoppable running game in victory over Maranatha.
By CHRIS TOBOLSKI
OCVarsity.com
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – The leading rusher for St. Margaret's was hurt in the team's final league game, an injury that could have derailed a team's postseason goals.

Not the Tartans, though. Not with their offensive line intact.

The line led the way Friday, clearing space for 308 rushing yards, in St. Margaret's 63-0 victory over Maranatha in the semifinals of the CIF-SS East Valley playoffs at St. Margaret's.

The triumph was the Tartans' 41st in a row, tying the county's all-time mark.

"It's a function of the system, being disciplined and executing," Tartans offensive line coach Mark Davidson said. "With Coach (Harry) Welch, we focus on execution everyday, all day. Everyone is doing their jobs."

The line consists of center Mack Santora, left tackle Chase Smith, left guard Connor McClure, right tackle Colfax Selby and right guard Jeff Askin. Santora, Smith and Selby are seniors.

"We are a unit," Santora said. "We try to work as one. We have good chemistry and we work hard for each other. We just want to be as physical as we can be and leave it on the field."

Freshman running back Matthew Duenes benefitted from the line's dominance Friday night. He led the team with 192 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He had four runs of 29 yards or longer in the first half.

"They did a great job opening up the holes. I just had to run through it," Duenes said. "The offensive line is just amazing."

It wasn't uncommon for Duenes to be accompanied by an offensive lineman as he ran down field. Early in the first quarter Duenes broke free from midfield for 29 yards. As Duenes was being pushed out of bounds, Askin was next to him, blocking an opponent.

"We play to the end of the whistle," Askin said. "We block, then get down field. We are taught to scan the field. If you see another colored jersey, go hit it."

Duenes calls that kind of effort from his linemen "securing."

"It's a really good feeling running around them," he said.

The offensive line and Davidson won't take all of the credit for the team's success. Askin pointed out how well the defense played, and Davidson said the blocking extends beyond the offensive line.

On another 29-yard run by Duenes, it was receiver Davis Edwards who sprung Duenes with a down-field block.

"You need good blocking from the whole team," Davidson said. "That's the system. We are doing a good job in it."

Welch was pleased with the offensive line's performance Friday. He is known to put a lot of responsibility on their plate, but with their success, who could blame him.

"Coach Welch told us the game is on our shoulders," Askin said. "It's a big honor for us for coach to put the game in our hands."

Newguy,

I'm not sure how many public schools have football teams that get out by 4:30. I know from my days at TC that the coaches arrived at school around 7am, regular practice (not the early outs for specialty reviews which were at 2:45ish) would start at 3pm and end around 6-6:30pm. So while I agree with you about coaches coaching for the kids and obviously not the money, I just wanted to give credit to the public school coaches who also put in just as much effort (and rarely get props from anyone outside their programs).

BTW, TC has 2 fumble recoveries and an interception and are up 3-0 in the later part of the 2nd Quarter, GO RAMS!!!

Whenever we lose, why are there some parents that always feel we lost because the other team cheated, did something unethical, underhanded, dirty, mean or had some kind of bad manners during the game. We were bigger, strong, faster than St. Maggie’s but the result was the same as last year. Until we get parents out of running the offense/defense, nothing will ever change. Until we let coaches coach, players play, and parents stop living THEIR dreams through THEIR sons, the end result we always be the same.

We stunk up the place last nigh, period.

It’s been stated already what needs to be done. St. Maggie’s came out and play an entire game of football we came out and played one series on Offense, defensively we looked like swiss cheese, where’s the excuses there?

Fear has no place on the battlefield, if you are a football dad and where at the game then you know exactly what I am speaking about. Come on now, you saw the game you saw the players on the field, you tell me.

Like I said earlier, lets change the mindset of the student body and possibly “some” of the parents of our players if we intend to step on the field and be competitive. Oh yeah..Look for a little known team named 29 Palms to give St. Margaret's there first loss in a long time.

As an outsider looking in I will say this:

1) We played both St. Margaret's and Maranatha. We held St. Margaret's to 7 points in the first half and lost 31-0. We were beat by Maranatha 16-3 in the playoffs, but it felt more like 30-3. My point is Maranatha is a much better team and should have done much better than 63-0, especially with St. Margaret’s starting running being used sparingly. Remember these are young men and it’s still a very mental game at this level. Perhaps the past losses against St. Margaret’s got in their head, but who knows.

2) I’m not sure Coach Murphy, could have done anything different. I think he is one of the best all around high school coaches I’ve ever met. I would say it would be much better to schedule some tougher and larger teams in the pre season.

3) As far as the comments by Matt, unless someone can produce the article where they came from, it maybe an Uncle Harry fabrication. Even if they were made, we have to realize that these are teenagers and still learning about life. Heck, I’m 47 and still am learning how not to put my foot in my mouth.

4) Bottom line Maranatha had a great season and has much to look forward to next season

Maybe old Harry will man up and offer Matt a formal apology for his deception, highly unlikely when all you are about is winning football games and keeping streaks alive at any cost.

Harry is no different than those pros who beat up on their girlfriends, bar fight, shoot themselves in the leg and falsify their identity. Just the type of man I want my 14, 15, 16 old to emulate…..all for the love of the game……..

Any chance Coach Welch (a.k.a. Dirty Harry) fabricated this article? I'd love to see if someone could actually produce the article where Matt Schilz said something negative. Without any proof it looks as those Dirty Harry is living up to his name. It's a sad day when a head coach has to create a lie for his team to rally around, especially when their focus is to hate another player.

minutemanAlumni said:

What is really sad is that my friends on the team said that there is no article with Matt saying that. The Maggie Coach made it up, maybe I am wrong but I have read most articles with Matt in them and I never saw it. Matt can sometimes be cocky but I would be surprised if he would leave himself vulnerable by saying that. Could someone verify that? Because if that coach made it up than that is terrible and sad. If he keeps a quote from an 18 yr old kid trying to grow up as a momento, that isn't terrible but I hope the coach remembers what its like to be 18......at age 18 we often say some silly things.

New guy, I could not agree with you more. I in no way meant to attack any young man who “choose” not to come back this season or for that matter even thought about playing football at MHS, I was simply trying to help open MHS fan’s eyes to the fact that by bringing in a “older” coach this is what he would be facing on a yearly basis and that simply was not the answer for MHS football

It’s easy for all bystanders to sit in the stands and second guess so called “bad” coaching. It’s another thing to actually get out their and get your hands dirty. Someone’s head needed to roll after last night debacle so why not the “young and inexperienced” guy?

Like I said and I will keep saying it till I’m blue in the face or taking my dirt nap. The mindset of the MHS student needs to change first until any type of respectable program can be established at MHS.

As an avid fan of high school football I went to the OC Varsity website to check out what was written about last nights game. I would advise all MHS players/parents to do that sometime today and read the article entitled “Offensive line keeps St. Margaret’s on track” Until we get those type of athletes with that type of attitude coming to MHS, be prepared to have more 11-2 seasons. We will beat the teams we should and tuck tail against the teams we should be competing against.

Coach Murphy, if by any chance you read this please take that article and forward it to all your returning players. St. Margaret’s did us a “huge” favor and put the reason for their success in ink.

Nothing more needs to be said. Let’s move forward, re-evaluate the program both coaches and players, get commitments in stone and prepare for the 2009 season.

Public school (alot of them) have 7th period as a fitness class so coaches can leave then and begin practice. That way they get done by 4:30.

Murphy and all MHS coaches start at roughly 3:30 and leave at 6:00 6:30. They go in at 7:20 and leave at 6:30, 11 hour days and for what? Your kids, cause it aint the pay and the pay is equal to volunteer work. Thats why you cant get many on staff coaches, they choose family and life. Like MHS Fan for Life I spend time at the campus and I know these people.

As I type this I realized that most of their coaches dont have kids. Once they come into the equation it gets that much harder but many of them try.

My kid is on the swim team, but I go to the games and I know the players and they love Murphy and thats needed. They respect and work for him.

My only thought was toward MHS Fan for Life - I loved everything you wrote but those kids who choose NOT to play football, thats ok. They made a choice, we know who you are talking about. I met and spoke with some of those kids and they simply didnt like the game. They like Murphy, just not football. We have to remember these kids are in other sports as well, grades matter at a school that is increasing its academic load, and they still want a social life. It is a tough balance.

Next year we should be stronger and while we will miss Schilz, Beckwith is mighty talented and can run. He is a solid kid.

Well Fred:

You May have been right this time about the Mead, But You were still wrong in every way about the Wildcats. As you see it was a very low scoring game and that is all attributed to a very good defense on boths sides of the ball. Rosemead deserves to be the victor especially Sumler, he was 100% of their offense, I dont think any one else even had a carry last night. I loved his running style, very confident on every last carry. Koffler is going to have to be a magician to try and replace him next year. All in all it was a great game and all of the players played with their hearts and souls. Monrovia had its chances but could not capitalize on any of them. But that Sumler Kid once again is the REAL DEAL. In finishing this blog, We are not San Dimas (59 pts) get real... CIF was right by picking Monrovia to be atop of the mid-valley nad sometimes top teams will lose.

MHS Fan,

You are part right. Coaching is the problem but I don't believe that Murphy should go. I think he should re-evaluate the assistants. The offense was horribly inconsistant. The play calling was questionable all year. Many of the players were very talented but underperforming and lazy. That spells a coaching problem.
If a player is underperforming and lazy, you should pull him from the game. Don't let that kind of play continue. Get someone in there that is hungry. That was a HUGE problem for this team all year.
Keep Murphy though he is young, he has the make-up to be a great one.

I think it is time to start working on better coaching for Maranatha. Coach Murphy is a classy guy, but the team needs someone with more experience. 10-2 looks good on paper, but when you play teams like Rio Hondo Prep and La Salle you should run the table. There is no reason the team should do so poorly against Brentwood and St. M. Going scoreless against the only two good teams you play says something is not working.
Keep Murphy as an assistant but bring in an older coach to mentor him for a few years. The team has outstanding support from the school and parents, they deserve better instruction and prep from the coaching staff.

MHS Fan, are you kidding me? Do you even know the situation at MHS. Do you realize the type of athletes MHS gets as freshmen? The majority of our “football” players come to MHS with only flag football experience. Do me a favor and go poll this years team and find out for yourself how many of these young men played actual “tackle” football prior to their high school experience. It’s like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

There is no need to bring in anyone to “mentor” Murphy. He has all the experience and knowledge of the game that any uprising program needs. I will take Murphy over a Harry Welch or any other “older” coach out there today. You obviously don’t know or are aware of the make up the MHS student body. Come out and spend some quality time at the practices, see for yourself and then put your thoughts on paper. MHS is no “hot” bed of walking athletes buddy, you have no idea of how many players did not come back this season because they thought football “demanded” way to much of their time and they wanted to “have fun over the summer” What coach is going to want to come to MHS and have to deal year in and year out with boys who can pick and choose whether or not they want to make the “commitment “to a football program. Regardless of the “support” that you are talking about, you’re forgetting one thing; “support” does not play football, athletes do. Until we start getting experienced youth football players coming to MHS and the “mind” set of the MHS student body changes, unfortunately this will be the result of and I’m quoting your words, “a 10-2 season looking good on paper” (which was actually 11-2)

I will agree with you in one regard, if any coaching changes need to be made, it needs to start with the assistances. You really can’t ask players to be committed when the majority of your coaching staff shows up 30 minutes to an hour late or not at all for practice. This you would know “if” you actually spent some time attending any of the practices not just the games.

As a MHS loyal, I know for a fact that Murphy has to walk on egg shells on campus and pick and choose his words carefully making sure not to cross that imaginary line in the sand and speak of a program that wants to be labeled with the philosophy of “win at all cost” If you are a parent of a current MHS football player, my advice to you is seek out a public school if that’s what you are craving, just my advice.

Last night was no fun at all for anyone except St. Maggie’s but remember buddy, you can’t ask a dentist to walk into the OR and suddenly perform brain surgery. As always, I am a true and always will be a MHS loyal………

Congratulations to Rosemead! You guys played great ball last night. You deserve to be in the championship game.

Congratulations to Monrovia and Coach Maddox as well. Keep your heads up Cats as this was an incredible season. Maddox, thanks for turning around our program! I can't wait to see what the Cats do next year. Watch out Mid-Valley...they're baaaaccckkkk!

Good luck to Rio Hondo Prep as they face Linfield tonight. I hope to get a chance to check the game out. Bring home a championship baby!!!

Congratulations to the Maranatha players as well. It's been a pleasure to watch that program grow over the last three years. And to all those naysayers out there questioning Coach Murphy, you guys are out of your freakin mind! Your program sucked before he took over. He's taken you to a quarter final game, a semi-final game, and a championship game and you still question his ability. What kind of fan are you MHS Fan? That's pathetic. RCJParry said:

It looked to me like Rosemead's lines had 30+ pounds and a couple of inches of advantage -- man-to-man -- on both sides of the ball. That's what made the difference. Rosemead won the lines and got pretty much five yards on ever carry while Williams, Boggs and Cole had to wiggle, wriggle and dance for 3. Monrovia had far more 3-and-outs, and that's what made the difference.

Well, that and the 'cats inability to hold on to the ball. The fumble on the 15 in the 4th quarter was the real killer.

None the less, a solid effort by both teams. Nick Bueno's scramble on the busted shotgun play at the end of the 4th quarter will be an enduring memory for me. One of the best football plays I've ever seen tossed together on the fly. When he cut across midfield I was sure he would score.

Williams is not overrated. He just didn't play big when they needed it. I've seen him tear others apart. He was really hesitant tonight...wouldn't make hard cuts. He kept stringing out the runs and Mead was closing fast and hard.

Mead was ok...played smart and tactical. Hats off the Rovia thought, they fought the Panthers all the way to the end.

Williams isn't necessarily overrated. He had a tough time getting some good blocking up front. Rosemeads front line was blowing Monrovia off the ball all night. Tough to run without a little help.

He did not play badly, but not his best game either. Boggs is a BA. He is awesome. Great safety, awesome in run support.

Sumler is a beast.

Rosemead 16, Monrovia 6 with 3:10 in the fourth.

Rosemead's #15, Gilbert De La Rosa, is having an amazing drive.

The Panthers senior linebacker registered three tackles for losses on Monrovia's best drive of the fourth quarter.

His last tackle came on a botched snap from the Rosemead 40 yard, in which De La Rosa strip tackled Monrovia quarterback Nick Bueno, resulting in a 20-yard sack. The Wildcats had the ball on the Rosemead 40 on a third and 15.

Monrovia's Marquise Williams scored the touchdown, stiff-arming Rosemead's Gilbert De La Rosa at the 7 and scoring over the left pylon on a 4-yard end around.

The Wildcats initially converted a successful 2-point conversion on a pass from Chris Carino to Grant Haggard.

However, the conversion was called back due to an illegal man downfield penalty. Monrovia's Sergio Diaz then missed an extra point.

Rosemead 9, Monrovia 0 @ the half.

It's been all Rosemead to this point.

Sumler has the lone score of the half, taking the first carry of the second quarter 66 yards for a score.

The Panthers also tallied two points on a blocked punt that lead to a safety. That was the lone special team's highlight for Rosemead, which could be up by more if not for two missed field goals (51, 41 yards).

The Wildcats' best offensive drive came in the final seconds of the first half when they drove 70 yards on two plays before the half ended with quarterback Nick Bueno being tackled at the Rosemead 24.

It was the first time Monrovia had crossed midfield.

Tra Sumler has 175 yards on 22 carries.
