Sorry I've kept you guys out of the loop. It's not on purpose I promise you. In a week I'll be moving into my new town house in South Pasadena, which means I have to be out of my old apartment by the 31st, this Wednesday. That's what's been keeping me busy off the blog and limited to game assignments/Rose Bowl coverage. Things will settle back to normal by the start of next week, I hope. No longer will I be dreading the 40 minute drive from Downey to Pasadena to arrive early in the morning and no more hour-plus drive home in traffic. I'll be loving the 14-minute drive to and from work, which means I'll be much more productive, at least that's the main plan =) As for tonight, I will be heading to the La Salle-Temple City Classic in a bit where I'll cover St. Francis vs. La Canada at 7:30 p.m. at La Salle High. Andrew J. Campa will cover the other semifinal, Alhambra vs. Montebello at Temple City High, 7:30 p.m. About a week ago, I had planned on posting a Top 10 moments in WSGV Preps ala Robledo's Top 10 Sports Stories. But I've been working here only four months and it's probably not enough a time to compile such a list. That's where you come in. What are your top stories of the year. Fill me in. Just for kicks, the best football game I ever covered this year had to be without a doubt La Salle vs. Maranatha, my pick for Game of the Year.

Way to focus and straight to your point, i love it. Keep up the work people. Dont let anyone stop us bloggers.
The thing is that - this wont work efficiently in any way. Crazy idea, EOT!
One of the purposes of the minimalist look is to provide home decorating ideas that are stress reducers. Will all of the stress that modern home dwellers face daily, the analogy is that when someone comes home to face many different things, it increases the stress level. Thus, the idea is to have a greater amount of space and reduce stress by utilizing the minimalist look as part of your home decorating scheme.

Metro pcs finally has rolled out 4G cell phone service. Finally with some swift world wide web wireless serivce optimistically speaking they will become stiffer opposition with the Big 3, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, and cause wireless serivce plan contracts to fall. Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

u r right. The season was 1973. The class graduated in 74.
Possible Alzheimer's on my behalf. Too much helmet to helmet contact back then.
More on Utah's CB Sean Smith the Blair Alum, Many pro scouts have him going in the first round of the NFL draft if he comes out this year which i think he should.
GA:
Ok, I may finally have a "senior moment" memory on you. As a youngin, back then I remember the name Rick Brown well. Heckuva player who ran as one of the backs in that machine offense which was TC's. As far as the years of the win streak, TC was beaten in 1969 by SP (which went on to win CIF that year). TC was not beaten again until the 1973 season, after setting the then win streak record, by St. Francis. After that though they went on to win the 1973 CIF championship.
Miguel:
A little RHL love should go out to Blair HS and their tailback phenom of about 4-5 years ago Sean Smith (?), who I believe was the guy shown several times in the Sugar Bowl for Utah. He was #4 and played one of the safety's who knocked down a couple of deep passes including a key one in the end zone and caused a fumble with a major hit on Alabama's QB. Hat's off to the guy and Blair, you made the RHL proud.
Ram Historian -
Dude, you realy went to the well bringing up Rick Brown and Mike Nanko. I played against those guys in the infamous 1974 game. The following week after beating us (AHS), they took the CA consec wins record home.
Nanko was a stumpy, surf bum lookin dude and Brown wore "librarian" glasses along with a shaved head. It was the classic "don't judge the book by it's cover deal". Rick Brown amassed some serious yards that year. Because of an INT, I also remember the name Len Stelitz from that era, a good backer.
The Moors were ranked 3rd in CIF at season start that year. It was 14-14 half against TC. I did not know the name Hitchcock then, but at half the TC staff took in what they saw and came out with adjustments and answers. They rolled us 35-14.
Excellent info you brought to the table.
Griff is also GOLD as a football coach. Monrovia has been fortunate twice over.
Historian,
Griff had HEART and a level of business-like maturity that was rare around Monrovia. Not as tall and maybe not as fast as some others, but he sure got the most out of himself. He also played bball and ran track. Competing year-round. Amazing that none of his varsity football teams ever won a league game.
New York,
DG was the BOMB! He was the best WR in M-Town since Fair Hooker. The Dude could catch and make you miss = SIX! Better than Canada (The 5th year sophomore at Mt. Sac.) and Ain't worth---- combined. My God! What would happen if a timed passing attack arrived at M-Town? AIR ATTACK! There is nobody in the WSGV that can stop them.
Three steps and chuck! Who can cover that talent?LC...SM...TC...SP...Blair...Please! It would look like Texas Tech vs. UTEP. One step and gone...SIX! How many DGs are out there?

Funny that Damon Griffen's name comes up during a conversation about "going for it." Griff last played against TC during the 1993 season (maybe Jesse Canada made an impression during the 2002 season). Damon was instrumental in our 96 yard drive in the final two minutes, making a circus catch to put us at 13-14. We then "went for it" with a two point conversion and missed, but coach Garrison, as a first year coach going against an undefeated TC team, established himself as a coach who would always take a shot at beating TC rather than a tie. That was prior to playing OT. That was a fun game. Griffin was also great on Defense. I think TC finished 9-2 that year (losing to champ San Marino and eventual CIF Champ Trabuco Hills in first round). Monrovia finished 3-7 and 0-5 that year but gave TC and SM their best games of the season. Trabuco Hills then elevated to D-1 and lost to Amat in the Semis the following year. Typical lower division circus.
It's all good, no harm no foul. People view the 02 season differently, wouldn't you agree? All in all that's in the past and the only thing we can hope for is that Coach B is back on the sidelines for the 09 season, that would be my New Year's wish.....
How about I call him Mr. G
All I know is that Mr. G was en fuego that night.
Ram Historian,
It is Damon Griffin, not Griffith, who has been helping out on the Wildcats' staff the last couple of seasons after a career at Oregon and some time in the NFL.
No, my panties aren't in a wad; just want the facts reported correctly. The Wildcats in 2002 had an outstounding team with several D-1 prospects. The Rams had Desmond Reed and a young team. The Rams "went for it" on 4th down several occasions that game. They needed to keep the Wilcat O off the field. Only once did Reed run out of punt formation. In the end, M-Town won one of the most memorable Monrovia/TC battles. By the way, TC is still looking for someone to cover Damon Griffith! Thats another story...
Hey Historian,
Sorry getting your panties all up in a bunch there buddy, my bad 02 not 01 and hey everyone I stand corrected, it was a total of 4 attempted with 3 failed, how’s that oh keeper of the historical archives (as you reach behind and pull out that wedgy) Bottom line great game or not we crashed and burned right? As I recall we had a pretty good team that year as well. In regards to Moranaga, no one is in denial about his “stud” status. What I simply stated to put into your words was a “fact” did he or did he not get stuffed coming out of our end zone resulting in a fumble which lead to an easy Wildcat touchdown? Since you seem to have so much knowledge of the game plan that night, tell us, did he also have the same option as Reed to run it outside if he chose?
As far as Reed goes, there is no need to give the resume of the most decorated Ram to ever don a TC uniform. TC will NEVER see another 4 year player like Reed EVER again.
If only Reed was used in his senior year the way SC recruited him and played him throughout his career there, what kind of running attack do you think we would have had with Desmond “Eric” Reed running behind Tommy Bullock?
Come on back now ya hear………
Respomse to taking you back,
Get your facts staight, Jack! The 2001 Monrovia/TC game was @ TC. Rams won 52-0. In 2002, the Rams struggled out of the gate yet had a chance to win the RHL title win a win @ M-Town. In a great game, Reed scored 4 TDs and played great on offense, defense, and special teams. Reed had the option to run out of punt formation and did so. NO WAY was he stopped 4x like you claim. Monrovia won because they had a better team. Reed was the Star News Player of the Year and went on to outstanding all star efforts in the Cal-Florida Bowl and Shrine Game before USC. That other little guy... Kenji Moranaga? All he did was set the TCHS rushing record with 420+ yards vs. South Pasadena on a muddy night in 2003 clinching the RHL title. Moranaga rushed for more yards in a single game than other Ram notables including Jamil Frazier, Reed, Donny Roberts (Stud!), Rick Brown, Mike Sharp, Mike Nanko, etc. Before you open yer yap, get yer facts staight. Jack!
GA
The reason you don’t remember Reed’s backfield mate is because he did not have one.
I know you are a MM loyal but I know you were there that night, let me take you back,,,,,,,,
Monrovia HS 01, 4th down, Reed back to punt, Reed keeps, runs left, gets the first down. Next drive, 4th down, Reed back to punt, tackled for a loss, turnover on downs. Next drive, 4th down, Reed back to punt, tackled for a loss, turnover on downs. Next drive, 4th down, Reed back to punt, tackled for a loss, turnover on downs. Next drive, 4th down, Reed back to punt, tackled for a loss, turnover on downs.
Do you remember who the little stud RB was that year? Kenji Moranaga. Little dude got stuffed coming out of our own end zone trying to wedge it up the middle and fumbled, member?
I remember looking over at the Monrovia staff that was in just as much shock over the turn of events that occurred as well as those of us sitting in the stands that night.......
Miguel, Hey I know you're working bro, we'll are, but could you post some updates, whats happening in basketball, soccer, anything. Your making me start to miss Scott Galetti, oohhh!
M-towner's
How about a two back backfield next year for the Cats?
Meaning split carries. Pretty clear you got the horses.
The last few seasons at TC it had been the usual battering ram fullback and a "premier" runner, most recent examples being Broadnax and Do. Broadnax had O'Malley (D-line) as his lead back, a serious destructo style blocker. I can't recall Reed's backfield mate.
Stewart had benefit of both skills, run and block. You have to "like", love and dream of the block...in the NFL I used to enjoy watching Neal...LT's front man.
Although blocking = winning, so like it or stay on the sideline. Been seeing better blocking from wideouts nowadays...no need for textbook on the outside, just impede the tacklers ability to cleanly attack the target...and please, if the play has past...don't clip!
The Ramrodders are one of the few remaining "booster" clubs in our area.
Last year's players or pretty much any Ram fball alum can tell you - the hiked in cooler of gatorade, home made brownies, pizzas and all the things the fball moms do - makes a difference across a long season. (Sometimes the most action is between the Mom's themselves - making pale any CIF power struggle) But in the end the kids are the winners...and alot of hours go into that reality. I believe TC's Judge (punt/kickoff) Machine came from Ramrodder funds...somebody correct me if I am wrong.
Sometimes parents don't feel like selling sparklers or collecting recycle crap and sometimes the players get burned out on pre/post game meals that TC requires....but the scenario is far, far better than no support group and no parent/supporter involvement. I know after the Halloweenie game this year alot of the players wanted to hit the party circuit - and some did.
The team banquets are all done by Ramrodders and team Mom's, video, food, table settings, etc. This years Varsity banquet should rock.
We would like to wish our cousin Aaron Corp Good Luck in the Rose Bowl game on Thursday and Congrats on becoming back up QB for the final game. We all are looking forward to next season already! Show yo stuff we know U can !!
Dewayne walker to new mexico state...
Good luck!
Miguel
For me the top story you covered this year was the one on the football team helping and supporting the players who's mothers were dealing with cancer. That story hit me hard because JUNE 22, 2005 I lost my mother to that dreaded disease. I know how hard it is on individuals trying to deal with something that severe. To have a support group like that is going to stick with those kids forever and it made bonds that will never be broken.
You covered some good stories this year that dealt with life outside the sidelines and as one of your readers, I hope you continue to bring those things to our attention.
Even though at times we act like little children with each other on the westside we still feel a small sense of family. I'm gonna still give you a hard time but just to let you know your work is appreciated.
Moor Than You Know,
Some communities are very involved and raise a significant amount of money every year to support their public school football programs with better equipment and a greater number of (and larger) stipends for a greater number of coaches and trainers. This money also comes with the added pressure to produce championships (or at least maximize results as envisioned by the Boosters), just like pressure at private schools.
It is tough to determine a proper compensation plan for high school football coaches. Usually monetary compensation is meant to motivate an employee or reward a person for great performance. However, the great HS coaches are there because they love coaching football, not because they need an extra $5,000. The $5,000 is likely just a nice little cherry on top of the joy that comes from coaching football.
Even Coach Rollinson at Mater Dei must love coaching HS football, otherwise he would not do it so successfully after such a long run. Mater Dei likely has to pay Rollo that type of dough because they realize he faces a significant opportunity cost in the form of packages that have undoubtedly been offered by other private schools wanting a national championship.
A public school principals make $100k+. Rollinson probably has a lot of school fundraising responsibilities as well.
Anyway, completely separating public and private may not solve the issue. The "haves" and "have nots" of talent and funding exist in both public and private schools.

It's interesting that all three of those leagues are generally private school leagues. Or at least the teams that most of us want to hear about are from local private schools. Hmmm...do I sense a bias towards public school coverage??? Just an observation but maybe you can give a better reason or explanation Miguel. I hope I'm wrong.

Any word when the All Camino Real League team will be posted? I know La Salle had a disappointing season, but it would be great to see the kids recognized - will help get the team motivated for next year.
Likewise postings for the All Prep League and All Alpha League.
On the topic of coache's salary,
Some of the higher profile schools like Sevite, Mater Dei, etc. pay the coach $100,000 per year. He has to recruit, satisfy alumni, produce a winner, and send kids to Division I schools. Makes some strange bed fellows when the dad "donates" $20,000 and his kid "beats out" the other kid or when the coach "overlooks" the star player's grades or party habits. Don't forget to send the bus to the kid's house to make sure he gets to school and make sure he gets the "hardship" scholarship because his 4.5 speed can't pay the $10,000 tuition. That is why the coaching job done at Azusa is so impressive. Coach Scherf gets paid $4,000 over his teacher salary ($57,500?)Right there is the reason there should be private school champions and public school champions.

I was just reading that story over on L.A. Times. Its getting heated, especially with TJ Simers kinda instigating the situation. There were rumors that Ken Norton Jr. was going to replace D.Walker as the season came to a conclusion, but they were exactly that. They way I heard it through a couple of recruits was, it started off as a rumor in the media, and eventually turned in to a conversation piece by "UCLA". I dont think Nueheisel is the culprit in the matter, but like Pete Carroll said, when something is wrong in the program, the HC is to be at fault. So whether his assistants, or whoever spoke on the matter, that was wrong, especially when it comes to recruiting. Im a Trojan fan, but I dont believe for one second that SC hasn't used certain tactics in recruiting, but there are some professional courtesies that have to be followed. Good example is Charlie Weis in dealing with Shaquelle Evans of Inglewood, right after the SC game. Him and Carroll obviously have a prof working relationship.
On the other note, FUCLA!!! lol... We lost Morrell Presley, but we are going to get Manti Te'o from Honolulu!!! Mark my words!! LETS GO TROJANS!!!
Moor Than You Know
Well chosen name.
As far as HS coach salary, I had heard some higher figures...but I know zip on the topic.
One of the toughest and most scrutinized duties is play calling...applicant must have thick skin covering a good brain...and know his players. Even then, be prepared for the wrath of and review of all.
Miguel,
Welcome to the neighborhood. When will we get a new top 10 the kids really love it and it's fun arguing who should be at which spot. Area hoop lovers are dying man...come on! Will Pasadena, La Salle, RA and TC drop? Will LC move up to number one, will Maranatha fall out of the top 10, will Blair move into the top five? Inquiring minds want to know.
Hey Goldenarm,
Itis nice to see that the son (Utah's Kyle Whittingham)of your former Alahambra coach (Fred Whittingham) got an extension, $6 million for 5 years. The money is nice but most HS coaches from St. Francis to Rio Hondo Prep, from San Gabriel to Duarte get peanuts. The HC might get $5,000 and the assistant $2,750 for 40 hours extra per week on top of their regular job. Plus, he has to take the heat from the administration and a few wacked out parents. So, all us bloggers, take that into consideration when we want to rip the local coach for his "poor decision" that he is doing his job for the love of the sport and not the big "pay day." Hope that all the bloggers and coaches have a wonderful and prosperous new year.
Hey Miguel,
Could you post the all area teams for all sports if possible?
Favorite Sportswriter:
Sorry to get on your case dude but was worried about you. Fred’s put up about 10 new blog posts since Christmas and we’ve heard nothing from you. Thought you might be on vacation and abandoned us but now we know the story. Good luck on the move.
Yes, the La Salle vs Maranatha football game has to be one of the top ten WSG sports events of the year. The excitement that night as MHS was unbelievable. You also want to consider the CIF championship baseball game Maranatha played against San Jacinto. Went extra innings ending in a tough 4 to 3 loss for the Minutemen.
Keep us informed on the results of the La Salle/Temple City Classic.

Hey Miguel congrats on your new place. Okay now being a fellow UCLA fan what do you think about Ken Norton Jr. making allegations that the Bruins are telling recruits he is going to UCLA if Dwayne Walker gets the New Mexico State job. To be honest i was hoping that he would be the New Defenesive coordinator if Walker leaves. I think its's not right he putting things out there unless he knew for certain they were true. It's sad a former Bruin has really turned his back and is slandering his Alma Mater.
