Football: Chase Rettig to transfer to San Clemente

| | Comments (64) |

Highly-touted junior quarterback Chase Rettig has filed paperwork to transfer to San Clemente High, La Salle High School athletic director Jon Matheus confirmed Monday evening.

"The reason he gave to school and to me in a letter and phone call was the father has a business and works down in south Orange County," Matheus siad. "He's been down there for a couple years and the drive over 100 miles a day is too a long drive.

"They thought it'd be best for him to see him play and enroll in a school down there. He's going to start in the second semester; we lost a good one."

Rettig (6-foot-3, 195 pounds) threw for 1,275 yards and 13 touchdowns for an injury-plagued La Salle team.

From the Orange County Register's high school blog:

Touted La Salle of Pasadena quarterback Chase Rettig (6-3, 195) has filed preliminary paperwork to enroll at San Clemente, Tritons athletic director Jon Hamro said Monday afternoon.

Hamro added that the senior-to-be is not officially enrolled at San Clemente yet.

The South Coast League has been intriguing the past two seasons, and it had four excellent quarterbacks this past season. But Robbie Picazo (Tesoro), Allan Bridgford (Mission Viejo), Sean Schroeder (Dana Hills) and Duke DeLancellotti (San Clemente) all graduate in the spring, so the Tritons could have the best QB in the league - and perhaps the county - next season.

In an unrelated note, La Salle has hired Sheldon Williams to be the school's full-time strength and conditioning coach.

"That'll be a help to all of our sports across the board," Matheus said. "We'll eliminate injuries because we did have key injuries last year. We feel a lot of schools are going that route and we're alway trying to, hopefully, be a step ahead."

The Lancers, who finished 1-9 last season under Antoine Peterson in his first season at the helm, have the same schedule as last year with the exception of Blair who the Lancers will play in Week 3.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

New Orleans Saints jerseys is very beautiful.

I love your website - great work!

This valuable opinion makes it's exasperation show. Now this opinion careens abruptly in to pet peeves which have not a thing related to the post, paying attention alternatively on generalizations with reference to most wives, backgrounds, bicyclists, and also an race purported through an adjective utilised to be a noun. A major coded offending statement is included, followed without delay by accusations of a “race card” currently being played.

Peterson done all he could with such short notice, last year was not the best year but this year was better . I was just curious of what you people had to say but i think coach peterson is a great coach and thats why he had a better season this year . In my opinion i think he did a good job by getting different coaches this year, i think they all can coach but the program needs a few more athletes. Just get coach peterson some athletes and i garente he will coach them and they will be even more sucessful than last season !

hello and thanks for the amazing article!.

Gallagher is the enemy. He was not just an employee, he was an included member of the community at La Salle. He had become a La Salle institution as he was a teacher, a department head, and a coach, not to mention his families presence on campus. He bailed. He BETRAYED the trust of administrators, teachers, parents, and most importantly his student/athletes.

HS Sports Fan,

Your poor attempt to disguise you personal attack on me with regard to Peterson is in bad taste. I know where you are going with your comments and it reeks of desperation. Do you really want to reduce this discussion to unfounded contrived personal attacks on a person you know nothing about? I guess I should have expected nothing less. Simply put, “It figures” and casts an additional shadow over the program. Keep defending Peterson. Just be carful of what you say. Next season isn’t that far away and you may have to save a few excuses to defend him next year as well.

Side note: You sure seem like you know the two different coaching staffs intimately that La Salle has had recently. Any chance I was right about you being the JV coach? Just thought I would ask.

HS Sports Fan said:

TommyDeTrojan let me comment on two areas.

LaSalle is an academic school. LaSalle will not draw good talent because the football players will go to St Francis, Bishop Amat or elsewhere. Each of the last two years the team started with 0-5 records. Coach DiFiori made all the right moves and enabled Gallagher to end as a winnner.

Your criticism of Peterson has undertones of something other than football acumen. Hope it ain't so.. Give Peterson time and he will develop a winning program. P.S. Gallagher's early teams were horrible, lacking basic football skills but eventually improved until a championship final against Verbum Dei. He also never fielded a team as young as the one Peterson inherited or the pressure to cater to a single player. I think Gallagher knew, get out while on top, 2008 was going to be a rough year for any LS coach.

By the way: Not necessary to debate defensive or any kind of football, you'd lose.

One more thing, TC has fairly good programs at home games for 5 bucks. At least I thought so until I saw the La Salle football program.

It looked like National Geographic photography with a slice of Ansel Adams thrown in. The coaches intro section was all color photography with nice write up alongside.

Miquel - what school has the best high school football program?

TommyDeTrojan said:

Goteam,

It seems like there are a few things that you may be unaware of. Ever wonder why Buchanan, Peterson's Step-Dad, wasn't at the banquet? Did you ask around? Maybe that would be a good place to start. I will leave it at that for now. Let me know what you find out. Then we can discuss the “vibe” you are getting.

goteamgo said:

Goldenarm -

La Salle's game announcer is one of the highlights of our home games. Glad you enjoyed the experience. I'll bring him some Patron to one of our home games.

goteamgo said:

Tommy D -

Somehow I am not getting the same "vibe" that you are getting from my dealings with the La Salle. I don't know how you felt the coaching change could be better handled - Gallagher resigned after Easter break; obviously concerns needed to be alliviated, spring football started, and they wanted to keep the star QB happy. In hindsight, things probably could have been handled differently, but we didn't have hindsight back in April.

Regarding "treatment of the players" - I am not aware of anything out of the ordinary - there will always be something, but from what I know nothing that would get me riled up - it is football. My observations are obviously different from yours.

I agree with you on one point, that "We want a winning program where “our” kids can excel, play to their potential, and thrive in a healthy environment." If I thought the environment was unhealthy, i would pull my kid from the school, which I am not planning to do.

Goldenarm said:

TommyD,

Even your announcer was a class act, asking TC folk if he was pronouncing names correctly and then looking for someone to correct mistakes on the roster he was given. The guy may have needed some Ritalin and a shot of Patron to mellow out, but his energy level was high and tone always respectful. If you recall, opposing players were helping each other up off the ground,,,,a hard-hitting yet sportsmanlike game. Always good to see.
Good luck in 09.

TommyDeTrojan said:

Goteam, HS Sports Fan and Goldenrm,

Goteam, we want the same thing. We want a winning program where “our” kids can excel, play to their potential, and thrive in a healthy environment. I am like you, a La Salle parent. You are right however. I am very upset at how La Salle has handled this coaching change and the treatment of the players. We all deserve better.

HS Sports Fan,

Thanks for your supportive comments of Peterson. Sounds like the JV Head Coach’s speech at the LSHS sports banquet recently. I am not going to debate Peterson’s ability as a Defensive Coordinator (Although I can if you like on these forums). I am going to say he does not posses the skills needed to be a head coach. Shall I list the many observations I have personally witnessed? Nice guy, sure. Head Coach, I think not.

Your comment about “average talent” strikes me as worth commenting on. La Salle is not a sports school and never will be. Academics will always come first. With that said, La Salle has done more with the talent they had in PREVIOUS years. Need I say more? In the end, the scoreboard is one of many ways how we are all judged in life. 1-9 is a failing grade however you want to slice it. Injuries you say? I guess no other football program experienced injuries? Why did La Salle have so many injuries? Shall we discuss this also?

Goldenarm,

I know you are a TC guy and your son plays or played on the team. I also know you have been VERY supportive of La Salle and respectful of our program. I remember one of your posts just prior to playing La Salle saying something like, “La Salle is a well coached team and always comes ready to play.” I appreciated the intellectual honesty even if you had not experienced our recent Head Coach. Thanks for the candor.

Goldenarm said:

it was close. We got burned with that double pass...from a eligible tackle no less.

The turning point was a 4th down sack by Justin Sutton on Rettig. After that our ground game began to materialize as the O line made a decision to nuckle down and get physical....and did so in every game afterward. It was a pivotal game for us after a fairly hideous couple of losses to AHS, SG and then a butt whippin by the Mead.

Your sideline was a MASH unit, and we had 8 or so of our own in street clothes. The place was packed...including two studious M-town scouts on the far west end.

Yeah...there is reason for anger at TC, reason to pray to the football Gods as well. Just my guess...we will have a prolonged wait prior to a hiring announcement. I have no clue what "direction" they will take. The new hire could be anybody between Pee Wee Herman and Cal Worthington. I don't think they have a clue who they want or what they want, except he best have Martha Stewart's table manners, and know exactly where the pickle fork goes in the table setting. They don't know an A-11 from a Veer, and to them a trap is something you set hoping to catch a pedophile.

It is a sad state of affairs at a school and program I have long held pride for.

No offense taken on the comments.

What do you see for LS in 2009?

goteamgo said:

GA -

Not trying to sound bitter. I think my point was taken out of context - I just used your previous post to steal a quote to make a point - that physical talent and potential alone does not always equal success. I agree - he is a strong competitor and wants to win. However, he was not the type of individual to make inspirational speeches and other things to "fire up" the team, and believe me, La Salle could have been fired up at times last year. The loss of Tony France was a big blow, because he was recognized as the team leader - when he went down, it was as if the wind was knocked out of the sails.

What we have to remember is Rettig is 16 (maybe 17?) and he is still maturing. We will see if he develops those "intangibles" I mentioned in his senior year.

I know you have always had kind comments about La Salle (and I for TC - sounds like TC is having a bit more drama right now than it needs or deserves). I know TC beat La Salle last year, but it was close, and La Salle did have a chance - it was 21-17 before Ruckle broke a big play to put the icing on the cake. Oh, well, always next year.

Goldenarm said:

goteamgo,

You are sounding unusually bitter on this one, not sure why.
My only point was and is that Rettig has a good stroke and obviously has benefitted from fundamental QB teaching and instruction. When he carries the ball he has good body lean and runs hard, sometimes over people. My impression was he is a strong competitor and wants badly to win...and is willing to do his part to make it so.
It is far too early to comment on whether or not he has the "intangibles" you are talking about.

If anything I am a fan of the La Salle program, not a detractor. I think if you picked any past LS football post from GA - it would prove that point.

Sounds like Anon might have had some ties to la salle earlier this season??
The injury bug goes both ways when it comes to high school football. with so many kids going both ways an injury on the defense usually means an injury to the offense as well. it just so happened that la salle had a few defensive only players go down. the season was over for these guys when they lost their leader Tony France! As for the final game of the season and the RB amassing 200+ yards that was all heart by that kid. Having attended all of la salles league games, had the original OC been in place i believe they would have romped these teams. the stepfather/ ex Pro did not know how to handle high school kids, and it showed on the sidelines. there was a huge lack of communication between himself and the other offensive coaches.

hopefully this team/coaching staff can turn things around!

HS Sports Fan said:

Anonymous you really do have a problem with the LS Coach? I'm a HS sports fan and see many teams practice and a lot of different games during a season. The LS OC was the one way over his head and could not relate to HS kids according to sources. The OC was there for one reason, the QB. Also the stepfather is an ex pro RB. I see in the last game they had a RB total over 220 yards. Sounds like pretty good play calling to me. I wish he could have called play for our school.

Apache Joe said:

La Salle does more with average talent?

I think Arcadia is probably at the top of that list or near the top IMO.

goteamgo said:

Sounds to me like a couple of people (TommydeTrojan, and Anonymous) had their kids apply to La Salle and were not accepted.

We should continue the discussion after next season.

Anonymous said:

Yeah, spoken like a true Peterson apologist, every game? huh lets see I saw Monrovia, San Marino, Mary Star, Bishop, and Cantwell score at will against Petersons amazing defense.. the scapegoating of The OC is funny to me considering the last 3 games I mentioned occured after peterson took his playcalling away and gave the responsibility to his stepfather...very professionally done. and shouldnt the injury excuse encompass the whole team, or were all those injuries defensive players only?? Typical things done by a head coach well over his head, and his underlings on the board.

HS Sports Fan said:

Tommydetrojan, sounds like you have a problem with Coach Peterson. He is an outstanding defensive coach and did the best with the talent level at his disposal. Lasalle does more with average talent than any program I have seen. Injuries and catering to one player created the losing situation last year. LS lost 6 of 7 LB's and Db's to injury yet were still in every game. Again, if you saw any LS games it was a lack of offensive coordination that was the concern. LS and Chase will both be better off by this parting of ways. Good luck to both as they have a lot to prove.

I can no longer stay silent on this. I have sat quietly by all year long. It is time to chime in on this topic.

Why does Rettig leaving sound as a surprise? Rettig is very talented but not the best QB in the country or even in the southland. He left because La Salle football has digressed 6 years in a single season.

La Salle has become irrelevant. Peterson may be a nice guy but being a nice guy doesn’t win games. Good coaching does. Some guys are great position coaches but poor head coaches. Is this really news to anyone?

Some yahoo came on these boards defending Peterson saying “Well, Galagher had a bad first season too so give Peterson a chance.” (S)He was comparing apples to oranges. Galagher had a start-up program and never played a game. Peterson was handed a winning program on a platter. Peterson’s ignorance and arrogance of his self proclaimed football knowledge will continue to be a problem. His inability to lead will also continue to be a problem. Has the guy ever completed a coach’s camp? Nice to see La Salle allows for “on the job training.”

The additional issues surrounding La Salle is the Pres is asleep at the wheel and the AD practices a “do nothing” management style. How does La Salle fix this problem? Not by dealing with the issues themselves but by throwing money at it by hiring a new conditioning coach. In the end, it will be a good thing but won’t resolve the issue of poor coaching.

Did anyone else notice the fan attendance at the beginning of the season versus the last few games? This program is continuing to implode. A 5-5 season isn’t going to cut it with virtually an all senior team. Let’s see who is to blame for next year’s performance. At least the kids will be in better condition?

SGaletti said:

Maranatha's schedule has been quite a bit easier than La Salle's in the past few years. After losing players to Mission Viejo, it's about time San Clemente got one back in the transfer war.

bigfatfan said:

Goteamgo: one of the bloggers yesterday commented that the demise of Rettig at La Salle could be attributed to the hiring of his personal QB coach at La Salle, and then trying to base the offense around Rettig. I looked at Rettigs stats from 07 and 08, and his pass attempts per game were not significantly different between the two seasons. Obviously, his production dropped off significantly (total yards of passing) from 07 to 08. His completion rate dropped from 53% to roughly 46%. so I am not sure if La Salle lost talent with graduations from the 07 team, or was Rettig asked to make more difficult throws in the 08 season. it just does seem to me that the focus of the offense changed that much from 07 to 08. but heck, I am just looking at stats, I have never attended a La Salle game. For whatever reason, Schiltz at Maranatha has been more productive. but maybe he has better talent surrounding him at Maranatha.

goteamgo said:

Some comments on this subject on the Backus blog when the story broke got me thinking. I do not think anyone disputes Rettig's talent and potential; what he will need to prove his senior year at San Clemente is leadership, and show the "intangibles." His record at La Salle as a starting QB was 7-15. Last season out of La Salle's 9 losses, at least 5 games in my opinion La Salle had a chance to win - they either had a lead or were close. A QB must inspire and lead his team to victory; that just didn't happen last year. Maybe the expectations were too high.

Next season La Salle will build around 35 players, rather than 1.

There is certainly more to being a QB than "dropback and footwork ...and ... "ear hole" high release throwing motion, with point the toe at the target." Tom Brady, Joe Montana, and Kurt Warner were not highly regarding come draft time, but they have Super Bowl rings. We heard a lot about the "talent" and "strong arms" of Jeff George, Ryan Leaf, and Marc Wilson.

Being a La Salle supporter, I know one of Coach P's goals was to have a Division I type player play at the next level, and give them the opportunity at La Salle. Rettig leaving is a bump in the road.

Goldenarm said:

Rettig has the tools. His dropback and footwork are impressive and his "ear hole" high release throwing motion, with point the toe at the target...all good.

He is a tough kid too. I wish him well, though I would have enjoyed seeing him again next year when TC plays La Salle.

HS Sports Fan said:

Anon there are numerous 6'3" 185lbs+ QB's with great arms all over the country. Every college roster has a kid like this. It's the intangibles that makes a star. In college a QB must master the playbook and class workload. Again, I caution to be patient. It's the high expectations of this kid that will hurt him the most.

Anonymous said:

I couldn't agree with you more, he'll have to prove himself with larger and faster talent...on both sides of the ball. As for the investment, I'm curious as to how much his parents paid for the 6'4" 205Lb. frame and the rocket launcher they attached to his right side.

HS Sports Fan said:

Anon 12,you definitely do not know football. Retting is a good QB but will have to prove it now against larger and faster talent than he faced at the Division IX level.

Goteamgo hit the nail on the head. There was no way he would get to the Division I level at LaSalle and the parents investment has to pay off. He has a strong arm, no doubt, but is erratic. The prior coaches worked hard to keep him under control and did a fine job. Coach Peterson was in a no win situation and hired the personal coach. Bad idea. LaSalle will survive and I believe excel next year. There is plenty of young talent and a new full time trainer is certainly going to help. Good luck to the kid but make the expectations realistic.

goteamgo said:

There is always an "official" reason, and a "real" reason.

I think we all know what the real reason is.

After all the money spent on private coaches, trainers, camps, and combines, the investment needs to pay off. With San Clemente's starting QB (who per Max Preps, threw for over 2,200 yards) graduating, it looks like an opportunity for his senior year. It looks like San Clemente is a passing team.

La Salle will miss him, but they will adjust and move forward.

JFMatador said:

San Clemente has an outstanding football program, they also beat la habra!

Anon12 said:

BS! i guarantee the reason he left is because la salle doesn't have the talent he needs/wants to play with to get him to the next level. without a doubt the top QB in the nation. nobody can throw the ball harder than this kid!
