BREAKING NEWS: Crutchfield fired at Duarte High
Hello Westside, this is your old pal Fred J.. Here is what's happening. After a tip on the blog, I called Duarte High School to find out if the rumors are true and it was confirmed that Wardell Crutchfield has been removed as head football coach at Duarte. Principal Eric Barba apparently told Crutchfield on Friday that the school wants to go in another direction. "Coaching assignments are on a year-by-year basis," Barba said this morning. "Next year we're looking to make a change. We're appreciative of the time Mr. Crutchfield has given to Duarte and our football program, but we want to move in a different direction." Barba wouldn't answer questions about Crutchfield's coaching performance, or offer any further details that led to his decision, saying it was confidential between him and Crutchfield. We'll have more in tomorrow's newspaper. BTW, I talked to Crutchfield about possibly coaching at PHS in December, he said it was tempting, but he wanted to continue coaching Wardell Jr., at Duarte. Now that he's available, wouldn't he make a nice fit.
When reached Monday, Crutchfield said he was surprised when told on Friday that he would not be back. "He gave me the same reasons he gave you (newspaper), that he wants to go in a different direction," Crutchfield said. "I talked to him about our accomplishments, and how we changed the culture, started winning and got kids into college, but apparently that wasn't enough." During Crutchfield's tenure Corey Fluker (UNLV), Mike Harris (UCLA), Chris Harris (Utah State) and Jermaine Thomas (Fresno State) all earned Division I scholarships. They reached at least the CIF quarterfinals in three of the four years he was there, which included a semifinal appearance in 2006.
"I think the school only had one player ever earn a scholarhip in football before I came," Crutchfield said. "I'm going to remain at the school as a (math) teacher and continue to help these kids get go college. I really think Duarte has a great chance to win the Mid-Valley Division next year. I can sit here and say a lot of things, but I'm going to take the high road. I don't want to have this turn into something negative for the kids. I'd like to thank Duarte for giving me my first head coaching job, I think I got everything out of it that I could. I'm disappointed I won't be back, but I'm still going to support the school and help the players in any way that I can."

They go for trendy ones that may go out of fashion anytime when the money is available to them or even rent them for particular occasions. The following bags may vary in pattern, colour, fabrics, designer etc but they follow a particular concept and are essential to giving your outfit a stunning finishing touch.
Mr Crutchfield plays the race card virtually every game with the officials and in fact is very confrontational with them as well. It gets old after a couple of seasons and I am sure that Duarte's administration was sick of his paranoia.
From what I understand, a couple of years ago there was a meeting with the local officials group and the Duarte AD, principal, and Mr Crutchfield to discuss concerns. The meeeting did not go well from the reports I heard.
Do I think Mr Crutchfield's career is over? Not by any means, but he cannot be so confrontational (even in pregame meetings with the officials and others) and just coach his team to the best of their abilities instead of believing he was jobbed on calls when he is up by three TDs in the 4th quarter.
Remember the hissy fit he threw last season after the Gladstone fight and he and several players were suspended a game so he quit? The quotes in the paper and the whole situation was a giant red flag and I was quite surprised he was back this year.
A local former ADs saw the article after his "resignation" and commented to me all the quotes were "I did..." and about him (Crutchfield)and was less than impressed. That former AD is a deparment head and still working in a local school
He may need to get a fresh start outside of this immediate area and hopefully he will grow from this experience and have that balance between motivating a football team and sportsmanship that is necessary in having a successful program.

can you be a bit more specific about Crutchfield's "problem"...
Some of the coaches history now sees as "great" were the very same men who pissed off plenty of people OUTSIDE the circle of football. Courtesy and proper decorum in council meetings is well and good, but it often takes a different flavor entirely to get players to excel and in particular, to unify a team.
I don't know Crutchfield at all. But your observation does fit in the case of Backus...harmony and glee does not exactly follow him around either. But the people who complicate things - can do the right thing- by remembering Backus is not the Harmony and Glee Director...he is the head football coach.
Sometimes there is more things to judge a coach and his performance other that wins and losses.
Let's say that Mr Crutchfield has a less that harmonious relationship and reputation with many around. It is too bad, because he has the capability of being a good coach and role model, but comes off a liitle short on the sporting side of HS athletics.
Sounds like Crutch did what RB did...provide stats of his accomplishments. This is what a proven performer would do. OK boss, Here is what I have done...now show me where I sucked in job performance.
Great quote from principal Barba....... "coaching jobs are on a year to year basis". I am sure this will make coaching new hires anxious to commit themselves and family to the school. What passionate coach would see this as an environment where solid backing and support await them? One season...blow and go...hanging right over your shoulder.

They should have used this plot line in the last X-Files movie - instead of the bogus body parts plot they used.
I still am believing - some as yet unknown factor is influencing all this "new direction" BS. One would suspect the usual root of all evil - money, as in budget, headcount, tenured staff with greater vacation accrual...or some type of back door method to shave off some nickels and dimes could be taking place. However, that theory is not enough to wrap up the "why" good coaches (Muir, TC, Duarte)are losing their jobs.
Who is going to step in at TC or Duarte - and trigger a better outcome than the former (RB and Crutchfield)would have produced in 09 and beyond. Those doing the hiring could absolutely bury either program...in fact, I anticipate we will see this happen.
Is a sudden desire for "new direction" just cause to fire someone. Apparently so.
I hope this is the end of job loss and wholesale coaching staff changes. The WSGV just had a breakout year, making it an ironic time for pink slips to be so abundant. If there is an explanation that makes sense - somebody bring it on.
Wow, I'm getting so tired of this "new direction" crap. I think that the idea of "new direction" is really just an admin way of saying : "we don't like you, get the heck out." Lame. At least give the coach the right reasons and not some bs about "new direction"
It is also the girls water polo season and the RHL is all over the CIF rankings. Three teams ranked. Lets give them some love.

Maybe Duarte and TC should trade coaches. That would satisfy each administrations desire to "go in another direction".
Bigfatfan, They don't elaborate on the "different direction" they want to go. This has become a coaching epidemic.
GoldenArm should love this one. another football coach fired because the school wants to go in a "new direction". and Duarte, like TC, made the playoffs, won a game in the playoffs, and still that is not enough for a coach to keep his job. it will be interesting to see what "new direction" is charted for Duarte and TC with the hirings of the new coaches.
Miguel, when you talk to these school administrators, do they elaborate on the "new direction" issue? sounds like this is just the Politically Correct way to tell the coach goodbye.
