Girls Basketball: Monrovia dispatches Blair in OT
Got to catch the Monrovia-Blair girls basketball game. For a game recap click on this link. To me, the Wildcats (11-6, 3-1) seem to be a bit of an enigma. They play well in stretches but at times make bad decisions on the floor that halts any, if not all, momentum. Monrovia got off to a big start thanks to Vanessa Hernandez' seven points. The Wildcats had a 15-13 lead after one quarter. But then came Blair (8-13, 2-2). The Vikings were the surprise thus far in the Rio Hondo League. There's a lot of potential on that team and they have shown they can go toe to toe with the quicker teams. But at some point in last night's game, Blair started playing a half-court offense which played to Monrovia's advantage. The problem was that Jasmine Gordon didn't have time for a good warm-up. She sat out the first quarter for disciplinary reasons. She entered the second quarter cold, got warmed-up in the third and got on a roll in the fourth. Blair's Angeline Jefferson Iesha Fudge and Shaela Flynn are a good tandem. Jefferson has a good outside shot from way beyond the perimeter, though she can launch some in erratic fashion. It was hard to judge whether Blair's defense collapsed late in the game or if Monrovia resurged. It was a scrappy game and the win certainly was an ugly one for Monrovia.

As a long time reader and supporter of the Star News I have always been impressed with the job the sports staff did in covering prep sports in the SGV. Until now. I keep reading stories about San Marino Girls Basketball, Blair Girls Basketball, Monrovia Girls Basketball, PHS and La Salle Girls Basketball. Can someone on your staff get a clue. The Temple City boys team beats La Canada and keeps on rolling but nothing about them. The South Pasadena girls basketball team beats TC, Monrovia, San Marino and Blair all of whom were ranked in your top 10 and nothing about them. Both of these teams are made up of a bunch of over achieving kids who are well coached and play with unbelievable heart. Both teams have a star player but both represent all that is good about "team sports". I wish someone on youe staff would get a clue and cover both of these great teams.

although im a wildcat fan i knew blair would give us a run for our money and go after everything! if i had to put my money on the game sad to say i would have went with blair because they take nothing for granted. mhs had a slow start because they said the coach (if thats what you want to call him) got on them real bad about nothing that could have waited till after..so in short..he took the girls spirit out of the game.
Tough loss last night. YES Miguel,we let off the gas and they were able to get their BIGS involved. The girls are battle tested and will improve in close out games.That #2 for blair is the "CLEAN UP WOMAN" DIRTY AND GRIME BEWARE. Every loose ball or pile up she was somewhere in the pile. Boxing out the bigs in great position for rebounds, but shortin staure but a big HEART.
It was a hard, tough game. Both sides missed a bunch of free throws. It'll be interesting to see what adjustments get made for the second game between the teams.
