Goldenarm: If you were the No. 1 candidate for the four schools needing a head football coach, which school would you choose?

As always, I welcome topics from our fellow and loyal bloggers. This one comes from "From The Sidelines" Mayor Goldenarm:

We were recently commenting on the issue with my friend this morning in the car. These are my feelings exactly. Nice work!!!
Neat blog layout! Very easy on the eyes.. i like the colors you picked out
Looks like Ameriie is switching it up with her newest song, titled Outside Your Body. She's going back to her Korean roots in her track, fusing rhythm & blues with K-pop. This futuristic song sounds amazing on my playlist and I really can't wait for the music video to be released.

Uhm... I don't really know what to think... but I have a question I'd like to ask you in private, ideally by email. How can I reach you?

Rihanna tore the beat from Only Girl (In The World) apart with those amazing vocals. I really wish that the remainder of Ri's album are just as dancey. Rihanna's musical style is terrific this time round and I absolutely adore it!
This can be a great read. I will certainly be reading this read much more.

sstress you can call me a groupie all you want. You're right, I don't have a child in the program. But I've known some of the boys in it for going on 5 years now. When I said "your coach" I meant the coach at your child's school, and I meant it in a general term for anyone, not necessarily me. And when Coach Parks came into Blair in May or June, as one of the only two members of the Athletic Boosters on campus, yes I stepped up to help him where he needed the help. My daughter isn't playing basketball, but I help that coach too where I can, so am I his groupie too?
I agree there was a lot of stuff that needed to be handled better, including the fall sports banquet. In my opinion, that's where parent support comes into play. Yeah, our season was bad, but there were a lot of positives to come out of it too.
sstress,
Yes Viking supporter is over the top. They do sound like a groupie and is probably the biggest “athletic supporter” at Blair. Time will tell as I hear different story than what the "athletic supporter" chooses to tell. I hear some very positive stories about the football program at Blair and I hear some eyebrow raisers too. Hang in there and don't bite your tongue.
Viking Fan,
Your coach??? what are you talking about, do you have a child in the football program? You trail behind the coach like a GROUPIE. It is not only the lack of wins it’s the lack of communication, lack of strength training, lack of field practice. The season went from hopeful to downright a mess. We were told all these great things were going to happen, but from the beginning of practice to the end of the season, including the pitiful football banquet, it has been inadequate. Nothing is organized. Maybe that is how High School programs are managed…
I have made a few positive comments about Coach Parks (it’s the football program that needs help) and I become very defensive with other bloggers when they have negative comments against Blair, kind of like…I can bad mouth my family, but don’t you dare … Anyway, if it were only it was that simple to leave the program, too many regulations to abide by… But I just might do that… Until then I will try to bite my lip. NO PROMISES!
sstress,
Having support for your coach and belief in what he's trying to accomplish doesn't make someone a groupie. Yes we'd all like to see a season with more wins. That's coming. A season where we have more players eligible to play than not eligible? We have that already. All year you've been complaining about Coach Parks. If you're that upset with how he coaches, then take your kids and leave the program. It's that simple.
Matt
anything happening at LC?
what is the feeling of current fballers?
optimistic or bummed?
Have you ever had an illness of anykind? You don't ask for the illness, but it happens. a Proper diet isn't 100% and "you should know that""!! so with the gym and getting hurt sometimes it happens even when your doing it right!!!
viking supporter,
You sound like a groupie... Only time will tell what kind of season the Vikings will have... Let's just hope its not another 1-7 season with kids getting hurt in the gym...
No problem New York. I thought your post was great. I was just expanding on the three teams you mentioned and added some of my thoughts. I enjoy your posts because they are based on fact and you put thought into them.
Gee Matt. I really hope that I did not spark an attack that needed to be censored. I was actually trying to offer a compliment to La Canada for their potential in football. I realize now that my post may not have come across that way, but hopefully it did.
Hey Miquel,
I submitted a response to New York this and it never posted. Was it censored or lost in the internet?
I think it would be great!!! Their is a demand on campus and a challenge to be GREAT on campus thats why kids are leaving, if thats true. That sounds good and i agree but, your saying TIP is a better all around coach on the BLOGS ! Talk to parks and see what he thinks privately.Bottom line is, the days of showing up and expecting to participate on the FOOTBALL TEAM IS OVER!The days of low expectations are over! He's a walk on coach who lives in L.A, recieves no monetary compensation for coming to Blair after the season, but He's HERE 4 days a week donating his time and efforts to our kids at BLAIR..MY SON IS ROOTED AND SO AM I!!
Don't poison the minds of others GO AWAY quietly pleeaase!!!
I know this man personally and his resume. His approach is not in your face, spit on you and down grade you into a hole of shame(ie:Tony Dungy).Does your boss treat you like a man/woman.I know Tip and love his old school methods but,you talk about respect.I was at the south pas game too support my fellow VERB Alum and I heard parents saying no kids ditched the game for the tussle to play a meaningless game. That's Respect!!! He's a winner on and off the feild ,knowledge of the game and understands the challenges that Blair has too offer.Colleges want to know if a kid can be coached, discipline issues, academic liability before they invest their money. We have many athlete's in pasadena strong and physical yet qualifying scores and academics keep those kids from achieving athletic scholarships.Blair has been Known for all the things he's trying to change within the BLAIR community,Adminisration and Athlectic Department. The wins are coming, but for known accept the wins off the feild..You said it,atleast they are working toward becoming better already!!!!! GO EAGLES !!!
Goldenarm,
In MY opinion the players did not hit the gym long enough and did not practice hard enough. Coach Parks is a pastor and a GREAT motivational speaker. He does not believe in HARD HITTING, in-your-face, rough-tough-dirty practices. Granted, some people do not like that kind of training; I on the other hand believe kids at Blair need it. That is why that have so much respect for Tip, he did not take any Bull$hit. Tip put them through hell but it was worth it because they were winning games. Again, I don’t mean to dog Parks, he believes in Student athletes and that is really good. However, I just wish there was a way to fuse Coach Tips gym and field training and Coach Parks Student athlete approach into one program.
Hey goldenarm,
I always frequent this blog, along with the tribune and whittier daily news; however, i have never posted. Anyhow, you seem to understand and know the West San Gabriel Valley very well, and in saying that are there any assistant coaches from area schools that would make great candidates for these vacant positions?
I mean when you consider the NFL and all the opening for many teams, they seem to be going away from the big name coach and reaching out for the young assistant or proven assistant such as: Tampa Bay, St. Louis, NY Jets, and McDaniels who left the patriots.
I know you can't equate the NFL to high school football, however, i just thought it might spark up some conversation until the football season begins again!
sstress,
I saw some good things from Blair last year.
Have things worsened? If so, why?
Last year The Vikes had good camaraderie and better sportsmanship than in some years past, they never quit and at times did some good things. Their run defense was atrocious, players constantly out of position and taking themselves out of the play without bother of being blocked.
It did look like a possible beginning to something good at times....what happened?
phs
la canada
tie between glendale and tc
1. PHS might be the toughest assignment, but it is so ripe for improvement...it is beyond troubling the program has fallen this far.
A new coach who lives and breathes only fundamentals of blocking and tackling, and is allowed to umbrella his ideas over frosh to varsity teams - could show improvement immediately, and within 3 years could restore pride to Bulldog program which severely needs it. I take nothing from Coach Mills, Tip or anyone else...my gut just says it can happen.
La Canada - Wheeler leaves behind the best class of incoming seniors fballers LC has seen in awhile. The football program needs only a large and persistent torch and some organization on the lower levels to establish itself. The right guy gets hired, Watch out for LC in 2009.
TIE - GLENDALE AND TC
Glendale - 4 head coaches in 5 years - something about that worries me. Loya and Valdes have ties and history here...if they end up here - look out.
TC - only school currently with administration members who can pivot their heads 360 degrees - a la Linda Blair in the Exorcist. Otherwise good people, kids who will sweat and work for a good coach all day long, good community and Alum support, excepting a couple un-named folk who go bonkers at the sound of off-color language. I would want to know who I report to, before I hand in my resume. Oh yeah, if you don't want to win real bad, and just looking for a paycheck, go elsewhere, please.
viking supporter..
Thanks for the laugh! I did not ask a question; I simply provided MY opinion. Yes, Blair is small school, but that is not an excuse to not have (at least) 17 guys in the gym conditioning for next season. My kids say the players are all leaving and the quarterback in training is an 8th grader! I am not happy with the move, which provides less time for the HC to be involved in the football program. Other schools that are looking for assistant coaches do not have their HC as their new AD! You can stay on board if you want to, but I on the other hand am not too sure…I don’t think I can wait around for three to four years for the “transformation.” Hope for the best, expect the worst!
That's not a challenging question!!! We have 7-12 1150 students of the male and female gender. Our student population in the high school is around 600 both male and female. Do the math our numbers will always be low and the talent pool will come in spurts.I like the move if thats the case ,because he is a FOOTBALL GUY!!!
Other schools are looking for assistant coaches so does that mean the season is ugly already? Maybe he's trying to find better coaches to improve their chances of winning!!! .My son and a few other parents agree that the direction is clear, GPA'S are up and a sense of pride and commitment is filiing that campus. Get on board stress as Blair transforms into a yearly contender.YES WE CAN !!!!!!!
The HC, Parks is a walk-on, but the grapevine is spewing that he is now the AD at Blair, which causes me a great deal of concern, because the football HC should concentrate on the football program...if you can call it that... more of a skeletal football program is a better description. Perhaps that is why he is recruiting Asst coaches…Ugh…not looking good for next season!
I'm wondering...Can anyone explain to me why Blair is not a contender every year for the RHL? Is the head coach full-time faculty or walk-on?
Great analysis New York. I agree PHS has great potential but something is missing. It usually starts with the Administration and from what I have seen and read it deserves most of the blame. I have seen PHS play over the past few years and what I have noticed is a team lacking in solid fundamentals and discipline. That is coaching. You mention Markham, who was a "my way or the highway" type coach. Maybe that is what is needed there. As far as TC goes, it also appears to be a administrative problem. I go back to watching TC in the 70's when they were really riding high and then getting back with them in the Desmond Reed days. Goldenarm, I am sure, will elaborate. You really hit the nail on the head with LC. Low expectations, attitude and commitment are the areas you questioned. You were right on. These were the big failings of the past head coach. He had low expectations, minimal commitment and attitude. Whatever they do, whoever they hire, please hire a guy who loves and has passion for the game. Make players commit to your vision. The successful coaches at LC make their players buy in to their programs. If players won't do that you are better off without them.
Good Morning:
I can't believe that C.V.'s coach for many, many years isn't on someone's list for Varsity Head Coach. Alan Eberhart is one of the best kept secrets around. With all the players and students he has had an impact on positively in the past I would think he would be the first person, coach and teacher these schools would call.
Jim
PHS is THE "sleeping giant" of the SGV. With 2,700 students (greater than Muir and Blair combined) on campus the possibilities are tremendous. There is obviously talent on a campus that fields an elite basketball program. The big question is: How disfuntional is the school/admin/whatever else? To go from a team that finished 2007 as one play away from the semi-finals in a tough division to a team that goes 1-9 (all with the same coach) is scary. PHS clearly has great upside, but it also has the potential for a lot of frustration. Is PHS open-minded enough to accept a non-PHS or a non-Pasadena person? Not that they need to. Would Tip Sanders be acceptable?
(As a sidenote: Don Markham took over Bloomington in 1994. I heard that the prior season Bloomington was 1-9, but in 1994 they were 14-0 and set a then national scoring record. So, one year turn-arounds are very possible with the right talent pool and coaching staff. I am not endorsing Markam. I am simply pointing out an on-field success story.)
Temple City: The proud tradition and success of Coach Hitchcock will humble any new coach as a reminder that the new guy will NEVER have the field named after him... (Nick Saban at Alabama knows that he will never eclipse Bear Bryant). Temple City's declining pool of kids interested in playing football seems to be a similar situation as many other valley schools. The new HC should consider doing some community outreach and convince parents that playing football can be FUN and safe. The big question with Temple City: What really happened to Coach Backus? What type of egg shells will the new coach be expected to walk on?
La Canada: is another school that finds success in basketball and water sports, but probably has low expectations in football. Attitude and commitment are the only reasons why La Canada does not push Temple City around every year. Are kids in La Canada just not interested in playing football? This could be an interesting situation for Backus (if he has not been exhiled from the coaching community). La Canada has resources as well. I wonder what Jim Mulligan thinks about this?
These schools are apples and oranges. It all depends on: how hard the coach wants to work; how political he is; is he interested in winning CIF or just competing for league once in a while.
Colors say south pasadena ;).
All the cute girls in the rhl league seem to be over there. I'd say TC because of the talent level and the atmosphere (though I don't really know what to think now because of the admin...) - Pasadena is a close second and the assistant coach job would go to blair(the talent there is off the hook, just need to get those boys inspired and working)
I've gotta say that is a cutie holding the sign. Where'd you get the picture Miguel?
Definitely not Temple City. That administration is too screwed up. It used to be a school that was admired for its football program but the AD and the principal have turned it into a joke.
Anon
I only suggested the question, did not claim I was the one to answer it.
I am impeaching myself as mayor, demanding a recount and resigning due to conflict of interest. If that does not work, I am sure Justafan can work up a crew to assasinate me. Either way, I rescind my vows, drop my robe and don't bother callin me "yer honor" no mo.
Who cares about Goldenarm? Who's he? Huck what do you think?
I would probably go to Pasadena.
Although the commitment at this point seems to be basketball, PHS is a breeding ground of talent. I don't see why all these athletes are not competing with the top programs in the area. A good coach would be able to instill a desire to compete and lift to compete with the big boys in the area. PHS used to be dominant in the early 90's and they still have the potential to be great. The talent is there, just put it all together and you will have a solid program.
