Time for you to give a crack at the preseason top 10 polls. State your case for the best team to earn a spot in the front page next week when our softball preview runs. Who is the area's best team? Best pitcher, etc..

I got a chance to see the Lady Apaches play Friday when they hosted Pasadena Poly. I really wanted to see what all the fuss over Morgan Barchan was. All I can say is, wow! She went 3 for 4 with a triple and a game winning 3-run double with 2 out in the bottom of the 6th AND doubled up a runner off first, from center field. Very impressive and a lot of fun to watch. I was told she hit 2 triples the day before against Muir. She also has a sister who was extremely impressive at 3rd. Pitcher Patricia Stark looked very good as well, considering she was pitching with an injured foot. Supposedly, she took a line drive off it Tuesday against Burroughs and sat out the Muir game. This team didn't look bad at all. It will be interesting to see how much they improve as the season progresses.

FSHA and La Salle at Temple City

La Salle's pitching and team looked sharp, well ahead of where they were last year at this time.

Jessica Ferri had multiple strike outs and the team backed it up well.

Temple City - A little rusty on the field but also made some plays I wish I had a camera on. Has the pieces to be a good team and do well.

That was a very dumb question of course the best all around player in the san gabriel valley can make all cif
IF SHE DOESNT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE THE ALL CIF TEAMS

chkyrslf said:

I would definitely say that Morgan Barchal does have a chance at All CIF, as does Jessica Ferri, Veronica Grant, Shelby Gogreve, Kylie Mulligan, Amanda Mowrey, and Katie Tripoli and maybe some others,(add if you think.) Morgan is probably the most athletic out of the group. But, being in the tough Division 3 doesn't help her, and that decision making process is a mess and a lot of kids get left out, so don't count on it. I do believe that Jessica Ferri is the only pitcher from our area who has a shot at making it, and if she doesn't I will be surprised. She is the best pitcher to come through our area in years and we have just recently had some very good ones.

Does Morgan Barchan have a shot at All-CIF this year?

The Village Christian transfer that is now at Alverno is nowhere near the level of pitcher as Michelle Escamilla, Nichole Parada, or Jessica Ferri. But she will do fine for Alverno in CIF DIV 6 and the Horizon League, however, it will be a much different challenge for Alverno vs. other area competition this year ... for example, the top 3 or 4 Rio Hondo League teams.

oh and you cant forget the latta sisters as well

Anonymous said:

South pass Amanda Castro and Courtney Dunlap as well as Maranantha's Annie Sommers and Monrovias Schae Simpson also play for Velocity. Its no doubt that all these girls will end up facing their teamates. Its gonna be a great year for softball.

chkyrslf said:

Who is that, besides the two you just mentioned? I think I could go down the list of travel ball teams for all the girls listed and the two you mentioned would be the only ones. Maybe Katie Tripoli as well, right? Oh wait Barbara Parker and Amanda Mowrey? Hey, at least they are keeping them playing. I believe that most, if not all of the La Canada kids play for the Ringers, right?

Anonymous said:

allie forillo and maddie herlache both pitch for velocity. its interesting that most of the people named in this blog play for them haha

chkyrslf said:

I am sorry, I have just assumed that the two Sommers girls were sisters, my bad. By their names and their numbers, I assumed that they must be related. I do know that Kimmie is a force of nature as an athlete in general. I did know that it was Marnie Hillier, I just wrote it wrong.

I have seen Allie pitch and I did note that they have good pitching. I believe that control has been a problem for her in the past, but when she is on she is right there with the best of them. Is she still pitching with Velocity?

As far as Alverno goes, Ms Zica has really big shoes to fill. It was really hard to tell how good the rest of the team was because Michelle Escamilla struck so many batters out. From what I can see, she wasn't listed as a pitcher with Village Christian, but that makes sense because VC I believe had a ridiculous underclassman pitcher last year.

South Pas is going to be an interesting team this year. They have been pretty consistent over the last few years, it will be interesting to see how they will hold up without Parada. From what I understand, they will be pitching by committee. They do have some pretty good returning players and hitters in the field.

It is my belief that as long as Arcadia softball is rebuilding, the Rio Hondo League is the strongest league in the area. But then again, I usually get yelled at for saying that. Sacred Heart and LaSalle may have something to say about that.

not sure. but shes a decent pitcher. ive watched a saturday practice for alverno. she has good movement but seems rusty. she should still dominate their league but as for play offs and non league im not so sure

chkyrslf- for maranantha, annie and kimmie sommers arent related and its not alex hiller its marnie.
also. la salle has allie forillo as a leading pitcher as well. just a thought

chkyrslf said:

Just curious? Which travel team does Ashley Zica pitch for?

chkyrslf said:

They can't be better than the pollsters think.

Anonymous said:

Her name is Ashley Zica. shes a sophomore transfer from Village Christian. hold on to your hats boys. alverno should be better than people think.

MORGAN BARCHAN

I heard that Alverno picked up a pretty good pitcher as a transfer - I think she transferred from Village Christian in Sun Valley - don't know her name. I have not seen her pitch, but my understanding is that she will make Alverno better than people think, but not as good as when Michelle Escamilla was there.

Temple City will be tough because Bob Ellingsworth is a great coach and he runs a great program.

La Canada also has a great coaching staff and will be very tough to beat now that their young pitchers have a year under their belts.

Poly, as always, will be the team to beat in the Prep league.

I had all of my emotions surgically removed over the summer last year. It was painful but it was worth it. Now all that is left is the brilliance and arrogance.

Maybe Scott will read this and get mad at me again and the emotions will resurface.

Morgan Barchan.
One of the best players in the area. For sure the best slapper. She is competitive, fiery, and has great OBP and led the team in HR's last year.

Wow - Now that is an analysis. Facts with no emotion. Great Job.

chkyrslf said:

Here you go,

I would put Jessica Ferri from FSH (Harvard) or Veronica Grant from TC (Syracuse) on the front page release because they are two seniors that are going D1 and can bring their teams to another level this year. La Canada as a team and coaching staff should also be recognized because it was truly a team effort that brought them to another level last year and they are probably the consensus team to beat in the area, returning so many players. South Pas also has a couple of players that are going to play D1 senior Katrina Skogsbergh (not committed but will play in college)) and junior Shelby Gogreve (Indiana University) . La Salle can be dangerous with some good pitching and senior Katie Tripoli who is a Sonoma State commitment. Morgan Barchal from Arcadia (Southern Illinois) is the best slapper in the area and deserves a good look as a pre-season top player.

TOP TEN (11) SOFTBALL PICKS. (By the way, it soo early)

1. LaCanada
-must start better than they finished last year, but they should have a nice tag team of pitchers in Lauren Oleary and Lizzie Miller, along with some returning players with some legitimate year round experience. Kylie Mulligan and Anna Edwards can really get it done hitting and in the field. LaCanada's problems in the past have started outside the fence.
2. Flintridge Sacred Heart
-Best Pitcher in the area is Jessica Ferri, She will probably have more strikeouts in two games than most pitchers will have all season. It is hard to beat a pitcher you cannot score on. Their fielding has let them down in the past.
3. Temple City
-After big losses, coaching and offense will keep them strong, not to mention Veronica Grant and Jessica Loiacano.
4. South Pasadena
-Although they will miss Nicole Parada deeply, they usually get better as the season goes along, and their infield is largely intact with Shelby Gogreve, Katrina Skogsbergh, and Amanda Castro.
5. Arcadia
- Coach has a year under her belt, and Morgan Barchal is probably the best slapper in the area (for both obp and power) and can take over a game. Maybe a season!?
6. LaSalle
- lost a bunch of seniors, but should have pretty good pitching. They could shoot up the list if Katie Tripoli and Maddie Herlache can put it together as the battery.
7. Maranantha
- great individually talented seniors, they also could shoot up the list. Between the Sommers family and Alex Hillier there will be more hits than in American bandstand. But because of the size of the school it is hard to put them up top.
8. San Marino
-should be young but competitive. Last year they were overrated early. Don't be fooled by the early victories, they have to be able to do it in the RHL.
9. Poly
-could pull some upsets against some bigger schools. The Latta sisters should help maintain some good experience in the line up and give them a shot against anyone.
10.Monrovia
-young pitchers have a year under their belt and they could be dangerous if some of their experienced players step up. We will see if they are still lagging from losing Katie McWhirter and Krissy Mihm two years ago. Hopefully, for them, Shannon Brooks can carryover some of her soccer leadership to the dirt. Brooke Cowell has a chance to establish herself as a leader as well.

11? Alverno
- they relied so heavily on Michelle Escamilla, it is hard to believe that Barbara Parker and Amanda Mowry will be enough to keep them at their high level status , but they could emerge if they get their pitching together.
