LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE -- Fans of the visiting Corona del Mar High School girls basketball team held signs with encouraging phrases through the first quarter.

By the time the second quarter came around, the signs were barely useful to fan themselves some air.

What seemingly looked like a competitive first-round game quickly turned into a La Cañada clinic, as the Spartans ran past Corona del mar, 57-31, on Thursday night in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV-AA playoffs.

La Cañada will play the Whittier Christian-El Monte winner in Saturday's second-round game.

The Spartans (21-4) did a superb job of suffocating the Sea Kings (18-10) with a swarming defense, and it didn't help that Corona del Mar went on a woeful 1 for 14 shooting in the second quarter either.

That's when La Cañada blew the lid open and finished the quarter on a 12-1 run.

The back door passes were there all night for the Spartans, and the Sea Kings didn't seem to want to adjust.

Tia Chen arguably had one of her best performances for the Spartans, nearly recording a quadruple-double. She scored 14 points, had 10 steals, grabbed nine rebounds and dished eight assists.

Teammate Courtney McCutchan was not that far off from a triple-double, scoring seven points, grabbing seven rebounds and five assists.

"Tia did a great job in the first half and distributed the ball well," La Cañada coach Tamar Hill said.

There were, however, some moments when the Spartans didn't exactly look like a top tier team.

La Cañada turned the ball over three consecutive times with under five minutes left in the second quarter.

Fortunately for the Spartans, Corona del Mar did not capitalize.

"At that point it looked like neither team wanted the ball," Hill said. "Both teams were tired and worn out but we gathered ourselves."

So what does La Cañada take from this blowout?

"We need to make sure that we're making good decisions especially when we're getting tired," Hill said. "Hopefully we can get rid of the sloppiness so we're prepared against better teams."

Hi, i like your blog ;) Not bad, really, not bad.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Heya guys... I came across this blog from Yahoo. Nice stuff.. Thank you!

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Beckman Soccer Dad

Can you even read? Of course you sat on the Beckman side and were deeply offended by my calling your team a JV team. That doesn't mean that you didn't have some good players, it just meant that the team wasn't competitive with FSHA.

Soccer Dad said:

Really, don't post any more. You don't know anything about soccer.
I am not an FSHA dad. My son went to another school (obviously)

I sat on the Beckman side where I learned that : # 4 for Beckman is on the US National U-17 team. # 5 a junior has already committed to USC. The Beckman goalkeeper is the best I've seen play in this area since Coleen Boyd and Ayana Sumyasu who are starting at Oregon State and Yale respectively.. And don't say that's only three kids. They were loaded with premier players. Hardly a JV team. Really, you don't know Jack.

1. FSHA vs Saugus very tough game on the road. Saugus beat them early this year 3-1. should be exciting game.
2. Arcadia vs Harvard Westlake. home advantage helps Apaches. could go either way.
3. La Salle vs San Gorgonio. La Salle another suprise run in the Cif. beat La Serna Cif champs.
4. Maranatha vs Paloma Valley. don't no much about Paloma but Maranatha solid team all around.
5. La Canada vs Oak Park. away game does not help injuries could be a factor.
6. Alverno vs St.Matthias. another easy game for Alverno. has to win cif and move up division to compete.

Sorry about hitting that nerve. At least your kids can get started on their preparation for Cal Cup (yes, Cal Cup)

I was bored, maybe coach Ali was bored too but was just more polite than me.

If "I love Soccer" thought Beckman was like a JV team he/she should never post again. It was a great HS soccer game. Both teams were skilled and technical.
I don't think "I Love Soccer" was even at the game. He/She said they left to go watch Maranatha. Interesting. USC Women's Coach Ali was there and stayed for the entire game. All he did was win a NCAA championship in 07. He must not have known that Ramona Convent was at Maranatha.

Hey orangefan:

Most of the club players in this region end up at Crescenta Valley or FSHA.

orangefan said:

ILovePlayoffs and CIF Ref,

I never said Orange was a better team then La Canada, or they played better in the game, I just was trying to show that even though a team has allot of possession, doesn’t necessarily mean the game is a blow out. Why even count goals if this is the case? Just have a stopwatch and give the win to the team with most possession. At the end of the day a win is determined by goals, not how long a team has possession.

CIF Ref, you are right about Orange’s back line, they where our rock all season long and we will surly miss the graduating seniors next year. We are very proud of them along with the rest of the team.

Highschoolsoccerfan and ILovePlayoffs.. You both can state your case over and over again.. but you will never convince me that it isn’t a VERY strong advantage to have HS girls that play in CSL. Stating that “ La Canada won but it is not because they played more club players than you” then what do you contribute the win to? Why put your daughters in CSL if it doesn’t make them better soccer players? Why not do what ILovePlayoffs said just give them a ball and train them hard and well.. you certainly would save allot of money.

ILovePlayoffs said:

The first goal was a "flukey" goal and they count the same as beautiful goals. The second goal was scored when most of La Canada's starters were on the bench.

How many kids did Orange bring: 30 (no kidding....I've never seen that many kids dress for a Varsity game)?...they needed two busses. But if I had to guess, less than half of them actually played. That was your coach's choice. The La Canada coach pulled two injured (both were noticably limping) starters off halfway through the second half. He then chose to sub rather than run up the score.

You can say that it was a close game all you want, but it really wasn't.

CIF Ref said:

You must not get out very much. I've seen some incredible talent in the Hispanic leagues. I'm talking about players that any CSL club would want to have. Top to bottom, CSL is probably the best league in the entire country, but that doesn't mean it has a monopoly on talent. Not by a long shot

CIF Ref said:

I watched the game for a bit before my own assignment. It really was pretty one sided.

I've refereed La Canada twice this year. They are very different than last year. I know that they lost their two All-Everything Stars to D1 colleges and only returned a couple of starters (2 or 3?). I didn't expect that they would make the playoffs.

Orange had a very good back line, and it didn't surprise me to find out that they were mostly all league back there. A quick check on Maxpreps shows that no one scored more than 3 on Orange all year, and I think the ones that did were from stronger divisions.

But Orangefan was right, they did almost blow a two goal lead when they subbed out their starters. They must have had 6 or 7 of them on the bench at the end of the game. I guess the coach figured that maybe he wouldn't get another chance to get everyone out onto the field during the playoffs.

Orange did a nice job, but La Canada was clearly the better team

highschoolsoccerfan said:

Hey Orange fan:

No offense, but enjoy the soccer games for what they are. We all have different opinions on how the game was played. You should be praising your daughter for helping to get her school into the playoffs and giving it her best in the game. Yes, La Canada won but it is not because they played more club players than you. If that were the case why do we have playoff games.

So according to you the two goals Orange got where flukes and the three goals LC got where legit.. . The goal that “barely bounced off the inside of the far post on the ground”.. how is that goal any less relevant? Also Orange’s second goal was on a corner kick.. Wow, if the LC coach wasn’t so busy subbing in players that goal surly wouldn’t have happened (sarcasm).

I know for a fact most of the Orange girls do not play year round soccer. Also can you please name the non CSL leagues that are as competitive as CSL? No matter how you look at it the Orange team, the third place team in their league that most of the girls play only in the HS season team, held their own against a first place team where all their players that play CSL silver and above.

ILovePlayoffs said:

Orangefan

Sometimes the score reflects the game, and sometimes it doesn't. IMO, this game was the latter and could have been 5-0 for LC. My kids go to Poly so I have no axe to grind here....we had a terrible season and finished last in D3 Prep.

I will stick with my comments though; Orange barely got out of its own end, and had 2 SoG in the entire first half. The Goal barely bounced off the inside of the far post on the ground. LC came back with 3 unanswered goals. The LC coach almost shot himself in the foot by subbing in ALL of the players on his bench with over 10 minutes to play. I'm sure that he won't make that mistake again.

So what did you do, check the roster against the CSL website? Jeeeeeez. I just had a look OCVarsity and it seems that Orange had 4 returning 1st and 2nd team all league players from last year. There are plenty of non CSL leagues that have great players and I would bet that most of your girls play on those teams year round. Soccer is the most democratic sport on earth. All you need is a ball to train hard and well

ARCADIA GIRLS CAME TO PLAY LAST NIGHT VS VALENCIA IN CIF PLAYOFF ACTIVITY. A VERY EXCITING GAME IN WHICH THE ARCADIA GIRLS DID NOT GIVE UP, GET DOWN ON THEMSELVES OR LET THE HORRIBLE REF'S DETER THEIR DETERMINATION.

orangefan said:

Wow ILovePlayoffs.. So glad you got to see LC “pound the snot” out of Orange. I don’t think a 3 to 2 final score is actual killing on LC’s part. In fact LC was on their toes the last couple minutes of the game as two dangerous shots on goal by Orange almost tied the game. I also like when a goal goes in against your team it is a “”weird little grounder”.. what makes that goal any less important then any other goal… and just for your information Orange only has 3 club players on their team, all freshman, only silver and bronze, and none are starters… so LC, who is made up of it looks like all club players, silver and above, barley pulled out a win against a bunch of girls who don’t play club at all… good luck going forward..

LOL Steve Lesse is going to stroke out when he reads your post. But you make some excellent points and I hadn't really thought about it that way.

Well, we're out.....good luck to everyone still in it; especially our daughter's LAFC teammates at LCHS

ILovePlayoffs said:

I got to see parts of 3 games last night

1) In the first half, LC was just pounding the snot out of Orange, but Orange got a weird little "grounder" in first. LC then fired off 3 unanswered goals and Orange got one more in the last few minutes as LC was getting everyone subbed in. LC clearly had a lot of injuries and I think that the coach was trying to get those kids off the field as soon as he could. That almost backfired. Oak Park won't be so easy.

2) Walked across the parking lot to watch FSHA. No contest here. Tremendous speed on the FSHA team and lots of pinpoint passing. Beckman looked like a JV team. I got bored and went to Maranatha.

3) For all the hype about Ramona Convent, they looked like deer in the headlights from the opening whistle. Maranatha controlled possession and attacked at will. RC could not mount an organized attack and Maranatha's LAFC midfield and defender(s) shut down what little they could muster.

The Maranatha result vs. RC made me wonder about Alverno and the statement that they can "play with anyone." Alverno had weeks of beating up a bunch of AYSO teams (D7) between real matches. They could rest any injuries easily and completely, and spent zero emotional energy on their wins. Alverno had the chance to get focused and fired up for one single game against teams that have been grinding it out against tough teams (with injured players) that have their priority on winning leauge. I saw the Alverno/Westridge game and Westridge had to sit 2 of their best players because of injuries.
