Football: Muir vs. St. Francis? Don't count on it

| | Comments (39) |

Is Muir dodging St. Francis for the all-neighborhood showdown? Well, that's what I wanted to find out so I put in a call to Ken Howard. But the coach taking charge of setting up the game was Antyone Sims, the Mustangs' offensive coordinator. I asked Antyone straight up, "Are you guys dodging St. Francis or what?"

Bottom line is this. For us to play them this year we both have to get out of a contract. Our thing over here is if we get out of the Diamond Ranch contract can St. Francis guarantee two more years? The (St. Francis) administration won't allow them to play three straight years. Why can't we play this year when they're loaded -- we'll keep it real -- we're still young but willing to play them for three straight (years). I've talked to (St. Francis coach Jim Bonds) directly. We had a direct conversation a week ago.

Muir wants to play St. Francis this upcoming season but they also want to play two straight years after, therein lies the problem.

We don't have no problem playing them (this season) but can they guarantee us the next two years, and they're saying their administration won't allow that kind of agreement. It could be a gentleman agreement. We could do it right now for one year and between us we can have a gentleman's agreement.

I put in a call to Bonds last week and he left a message at my desk to give his side of what's going on.

It doesn't look like it's going to happen next year; possibly the following year. I began calling coach Howard on Dec. 15 and didn't talk to him or touch base with him until Jan. 15. He never really called me back and I called him like 10 times. I found out he wasn't going to be in charge of the schedule and I talked to Antyone (Sims). I talked to him two weeks ago. Their Week 0 game with Diamond Ranch has one more year on the contract. The game we wanted to drop was El rancho, but there's too much work and red tape to get it going for next season. We'll just wait til next year when we both have openings. If they are able to get out of that contract maybe we could go forward but i don't want to put El Rancho in a position where they're left scrambling for a game. Hopefully Muir in 2010.

Muir has Diamond Ranch at home, Oaks Christian on the road, Venice at home, a bye the following week before the start of Pacific League play. Muir would likely drop Diamond Ranch if they can agree on a contract with St. Francis, setting up a Week 0 showdown at St. Francis. Sims said they would be willing to play the first two games at St. Francis (so that Dietrich Riley can play at home his senior year) and play the third year at Muir. Problem is, Muir still hasn't talked to Diamond Ranch about dropping them because nothing has been set with St. Francis yet.

Diamond Ranch would be cool (about it). We're not worried about talking to them about the situation.

The last time Muir played St. Francis was in back-to-back CIF-Southern Section playoffs, which was 1999. Too bad it can't be done.

Both of us agreed that the community wants it. To me why wouldn't you want to comitt for three years? It would bring the biggest gate to the school. They just don't want to give us a three year commitment. If they were to agree to the three year game we could play this year at St. Francis and next year at St. Francis and the last year at Muir. It's only around the corner. We don't really care where we play; it doesn't matter to us. We're willing to play their next year in Riley's senior year. We don't care. We'll walk up in there.

Not for at least another year, Antyone.

Hey just wanted to mention there is a 404 in this post.

Oh and btw, I mentioned the fact that phs and SF didn't have any folks in the picture because Grant 3 noted that Muir didn't bring any "competition" to the game and that SF/phs was a better matchup. I know, I know, I laughed too...

Trust me, I know SF is a great academic institution and I didn't mean to slight any of the fine young men that play at SF.

Anonymous,

It doesn't make a lot of financial sense to abandon a HOME game with a CIF finalist in order to travel to SF. Of course this makes a lot of sense for SF who would go from a half-packed stadium vs. El Rancho to an overflow of fans in a game vs. Muir. If the game were to be held at Muir then I would have NO problem with it, but that doesn't seem to be what SF wanted. That's fine. We'll just wait until Muir and SF fulfill their current contracts with DR and El Rancho respectively and we can sign the typical two-year contract then.

Either way, I think we ALL have someone to thank for putting the pressure on the right folks in order to make this game happen......good job Miguel!

StangFan,
Lets make it happen, even if it is for one year! What is the downfall? Just to be correct, ALL seniors on the Kights team are moving on to a four-year institution for studies and a few for their game. Just not all of them are on an athletic scholarship.

Stang 4 life,
I hate to tell you this, but I don't think parents send their kids to St. Francis instead of Muir based on the results of football games.

The Stang Fan said:

Nothing like a good ol' Muir/SF argument that'll bring me out of my winter hibernation....

If SF only wants to enter into a 1-year contract then Muir shouldn't sign, period. It wouldn't make any sense to exit a HOME game with CIF finalist Diamond Ranch to enter into a one-year deal and an AWAY game at SF. Most deals are two-years in nature, but as Coach Sims said Muir is willing to enter into a THREE year deal....with TWO HOME games for SF!!! How does SF NOT take that deal? I guess their matchup with El Rancho is more important.....

I see we've also got a newbie dog up in here. Grant 3, did you not know that SF demolished the dogs quite a few years ago and assuredly has ZERO interest in lining up with a 1-9 team who, three months AFTER their coach resigned, has yet to land a new coach. On-field fights and lackluster competition? Dude, who was your coach again for the last three years and what was their record over that time? And if I'm not mistaken, didn't I see four, count'em FOUR, STANGS on the cover of the PSN who are taken their game AND their studies to four-year institutions next year. ANy dogs? Uhhh, no. Any Knights? Uhhh, no. The only local program providing "headaches" would be your beloved dogs, who continually vex and frustrate their fanbase who expect MUCH more from a school whose population triples Muir's. Damn dogs...I swear, they've got SO much to learn.

It's good to be back!!!

Come on bonds! What are u scared of? Maybe u might not get some of those pasadena kids no more if u play muir and them stangs beat up on y'all if I was bonds I wouldn't play muir neither. But he will always have 2 face the talk about not playing muir tough call! Plus they won't have an riley type player over there and muir has soooooooooo much young talent waiting is those STABLES.

Grant 3 said:

If I were St. Francis, I would play PHS before lining up with the Stangs. I don't deride Muir as much as St. Francis and PHS would develop a better rivalry over time because they are both stabile institutions with football talent. I don't see the benefit to St. Francis to play Muir. The headache of potential on-field fights and lack luster competition would not benefit St. Francis at all. St. Francis would have a better experience with an academic institution on the edge of promoting a strengthened football program. Thats PHS!

Stang 03,

Bummer as well that the tail end of follow through from Kobe was what caught Bynum - and tweaked him into an awkward position. In some ways , similar to a roll up on an O-lineman, only this roll up came from the front/slightly lateral side. Nonetheless, friendly fire and something neither he nor Kobe could have anticipated.
Anybody see Kobe's face afterward....total anguish.

Bynum was becoming a draw of his own and fun to watch.
Like last time, thankfully he is young. Kobe ripped the Garden last night....but a closer balance is what would put them over the top.

Stangs03 said:

Damn! just read that Bynum is down for 8-12wks. Im not a Laker fan but that sux. Hate to see the kid suffer another set back. he was starting again to put up big numbers. this has nothing to do with Muir. But i had to throw this out there.
