Baseball: Arcadia, Temple City will battle for Elks title
SATURDAY: Arcadia at Temple City, 2 p.m.

TEMPLE CITY -- Behind two home runs from the heart of Temple City High School's lineup, the Rams defeated La Salle, 5-2, in the semifinal round of the Arcadia Elks Tournament on Thursday.
The Rams (4-0) will play Arcadia in the tournament final on Saturday at Temple City High. Arcadia (4-0) trounced San Gabriel, 11-1, in the other semifinal game Thursday.
After falling behind, 2-1, Rams catcher Ruben Jara gave Temple City a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on a two-strike line shot over the left-field fence. Jara's blast came after third baseman Branden Pultz tied the score at 1 with a high-arching home run in the second inning off the first pitch of the inning from La Salle (3-1) pitcher Brian Hill.
"Pultz will hit some home runs this year," said Temple City coach Barry Bacon said. "He is a good fastball hitter. Both home runs came off great at-bats."
Other than the two home runs, Hill stayed out of trouble for most of the four innings he pitched, giving up allowing four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in the loss.
"He's a battler," La Salle coach Harry Agajanian said. "Every once in a while he leaves a ball up and he got hurt with that today."
While Rams batters were hitting balls out of the park, Temple City starting pitcher Jordan Halladay was holding the Lancers at bay.
"(Halladay) was on today," Agajanian said. "He kept us off-balance and we came out flat with our bats today. We didn't manufacture runs like we normally do."
After giving up a double to John Auer in the fourth inning, Halladay retired the last eight batters he faced, striking out six in six innings.
"He's given us two great starts this season," Bacon said. "He's gone deep into both games and given us quality starts. We couldn't be happier, he's one of the guys we rely on."
Temple City added a run in the fifth and sixth innings because of La Salle fielding and mental errors, but the Lancers were in a position to tie the game in the seventh.
With runners on first and third with one out, Tim Reed grounded into a double play.

The 11-1 lead TC blew against Rosemead did say something, something like they put in two pitchers that aren't really pitchers and they showed it. I talked to someone at the game and they told me that TC put back the starters in the lineup and put up a quick 4 spot. Just a bump nothing to worry about from what I heard.
apparently they will make a decision by the middle of next week.

Rosemead is a Mission Valley team. That alone speaks volumes.

Lots of injuries and they still are winning? Sounds like a great coach making the most of what he has to work with. I would say that TC has the best coach in the RHL, followed by Monrovia who is always strong.
Temple City is not firing on all cylinders. I've heard that thir top three projected pitchers are hurt. Sanderson was supposed to be their #3 and dislocated his throwing shoulder during football so TC was not going to pitch him all season. TC's number #2 a Soph. that beat Arcadia last year in Arcadia's spring break tourn. is only a DH at the moment due to arm trouble, and their #1 Smith from what I hear just started throwing off a mound last week since the summer. It's interesting that they are 4-0 with all those arms off the mound. Let's give them some credit they are doing what they have to to win games. And let's not forget to show some love for Jordan Hallady who has beat St. Francis and beat La Salle yesterday. He has emerged as a surpise #1 for TC.

Interesting that a recent post summed up TC as "without bats" and stated only Dusty would be a factor in the line-up.
Jara has improved steadily both defensively and with the bat. He shook off some criticism last year. Pultz is a strong overall athlete, capable of coming through in the clutch. Both kids are juniors. (And as the usual side note: I hope both return to fball next year as seniors)
Obviously the Rams have a bit more than just one guy.
Still, could it be enough against the Apaches?? Sounds like a good place to be on Saturday.

Arcadia is going to mop up on TC. Especially without their ace pitching. Garrett Tuck i hear will be pitching for Arcadia. He's the #2.
I don't think TC can beat Arcadia, but stranger things have happened. Afterall they beat Arcadia twice last year when no one thought they would. TC only graduated 2 seniors from that team so they shouldn't be nervous. But all in all Arcadia is better then they were last year and it will be a tough task for TC. I just hope it is a good game.
The Elk's tournament is stronger than people are giving credit. St. Francis, Arcadia, Monrovia, Temple City, Walnut, that's a pretty solid top 5, in no particular order. Pasadena, LaSalle, S. Pas are not bad either. There is a huge drop off from top to bottom but that's the way the tournament has always been. Other than the Anderson tournament in the OC it's tough to find a tournament that is super strong from top to bottom. It would be a great tournament if Maranatha, C.V, and a couple stronger teams from the east would join. Currently the best preseason tournament is in Glendora hands down. I've always thought that the Star News and Tribune should combine their final top 10 from the previous year and run a 20 team tournament. Throw in 4 wildcards and you have a solid 24 team tournament. You break them up and have six 4 team pools. You could end up with 6 undefeated teams and the top 4, using a fair tiebreaker to decide, go into the semis with the championship and consolation being played on the final night at a college somewhere like APU, Mount Sac, Jackie Robinson, or Stengel. Have the 24 teams involved fill out a ranking system and put teams in the appropriate pools based on that. 5 game guarantee for everyone involved. Freddy, Mig, what do you think? You could do it for more than just baseball too. Local rivalries decided on the field/court.
