Baseball: Temple City comes up big in the sixth, beats San Marino, 3-0; Monrovia scores seven in the first, routs La Cañada, 12-0 in Rio Hondo League opener

| | Comments (43) |

Temple City (5-1) scored all three runs in the sixth inning and the Rams' Christian Cano got things started. He walked to lead off the inning and Brenden Pultz got on after getting hit by the pitcher. San Marino was keeping Cano on check at second and Chris Warren overthrew to second, moving Cano to third and Pultz to second. Ruben Jara doubled to bring hom Cano and Pultz to make it 2-0 and Morgan Hatch's triple brought home Jara from second to make it 3-0. The Titans (5-2) threatened in the seventh but to no avail as Stevie Yortsos' check swing was called a strike to record San Marino's third and final out. More on this game by staff writer Miguel A. Melendez. That would be me.

Monrovia (5-2) recorded seven runs off La Cañada pitcher Jeff Oechsec to jump to a 7-0 lead in the opening inning. Chris Calver hit a two-run homer to cap a 3-run fifth inning and increase Monrovia's lead to 10-0 at that point. The Wildcats scored again twice in the seventh to extend their three-game winning streak and hand the Spartans (6-1) their first loss. Ironically, Monrovia recorded just one strikeout while La Cañada struck out eight. More on this game in tomorrow's sports section by correspondent Mario Aguirre.

Hey Miguel,

Did you watch last nigths WBC's Champonship game? 10 innings of great baseball. With discipline way above what we normally see here.

Congrats to Japan.

He just means Asian kids that he can use an excuse.

There goes Apache Joe's theory that Asian

kids can't play baseball.

RamTough,

I hate to tell you, but there is no thought in scheduling league games in the Rio Hondo League. They take last year's schedule, move the first game to the last and move every game up one position. Then, they take the home game and make it away and away and make it home. Does that make sense? For example:

(I am making this up)
one year

TC v SP home
TC v LC home
TC v Blair away
TC v Mon home
TC v SM away

Next year

TC v LC away
TC v Blair home
TC v Mon away
TC v Sm home
TC v SP away

I am glad to see that TC is doing pretty good this year. They have a kind of young team so i was not sure, but this record is really opening my eyes to how good they are. Keep doing good guys.

Pasadena doesn't suck.......I laugh at the immature comment.....they are well coached...and not threatened..we love big games and scarying people..The last thing you want is to do lose to us............great kids and not jealous and pathetic parents to deal with,,,,,,,,,,,,,we go hard or not at all..........we are not Arcadia or expexct to be.........you can't handle the the truth.............we love playing and hearing your pathetic comments.....best of of luck to Arcadia......and Monrovia..........the 2 best programs and best coaches.

TC vs. South Pasadena is probably the area game of the week in my opinion.

Baseball Dude said:

Pasadena Sucks and will get killed by CV unless CV is not what they usually are. Losing to SM and tying Poly tells me they are not very good. Beating up on Glendale and Blair does not make you a good team.

I really don't see how Pasadena vs. CV is going to be much of a game. If it is, then CV is not the team that they usually are. Don't forget that Pasadena lost to a very average San Marino team and tied another slightly above average Poly team. If you think that big wins over Glendale and Blair make them legit then you are dead wrong. If this is the game of the week in the area, we are really hurting for good matchups this week.

FlyByNight said:

Miguel -- I agree with Pudge that you should get out there to cover the game of the week...CV vs Pasadena. Have you talked to Parisi or gotten a hold of him yet? Phoenix rising out of the ashes!

FlyByNight said:

Don't hear much about the Pasadena Bulldogs here, but it looks like Parisi's got his program on the upswing. They took care of a good Walnut team a while back, and had many opps to put away Burroughs, losing a nail-biting 4-3. Winning is a "fire in the belly" belief, and Parisi's young squad are learning and should contend in every game this season. Upsets are abound in their midst.

after MHS and LC game i think its time to re-do the top 10 in the RHL....don't you think miguel?

Baseball Dude said:

I don't know much about St. Paul but La Salle vs. Arcadia will not even be close and neither will CV vs. Pasadena. Arcadia on another level from La Salle. CV usually is much better than Pasadena and this year should be no exception.

Realist said:

Monrovia crushed a poorly coached LC team, while TC got the better of SM..........Pasadena gave the powerful hitting Burroughs a huge scare only losing to them 4-3. Pasadena did beat up up on lowly Blair 12-0 and 16-0(why do they have a baseball team?) Which gave Coach Parisi his 100th victory, a nice little milestone.............Arcadia will beat LaSalle easily Friday night.........

Some details from the Monrovia/LC game. Monrovia tallied 7 runs in the first inning with good hitting and base running. LC was never able to mount any offensive. Kilbury looked strong and Wildcats defense played close to perfect. Good start of League for the Wildcats.

Did that get you in the CIF playoffs? We were there, but I don't remember seeing you guys there. Actually, when is the last time you made the playoffs?

Interesting comment since SP beat Temple City in 2 out of 3 of the league games last year.

Ram Tough said:

It is good to see the top RHL teams play each other to start the season. It should be a dog fight with those four. I wonder if there was some thought put into that since the weaker RHL teams (South Pasadena and Blair) play each other to open league.

LOL ... I'm not taking it out on the Eagles. Believe me, I can take the heat. Bring it!

eagleball said:

don't take it out on the eagles simply because I shared a little hate for your bruins on the other thread now... the youngsters will prevail in the MVL and defend another title

Miguel Melendez said:

Upon further review, Gabrielino is a little too young. I'm going to wait until the second or possibly third meeting of Gabrielino-Arroyo.

eagleball said:

how about Gab v Arroyo? A little love for the MVL never hurt. Could be a "chappy" little contest...

Miguel Melendez said:

I've seen LC once and written 'bout them a couple times I think. Good suggestion, though. But I do wanna see San Marino. C'mon, guys, keep 'em coming or else it'll be an All-Rio Hondo League section in tomorrow's paper.

Surprised your not going to the #7 Monrovia/#3 La Canada game. No disrespect to #10 Alhambra, because they need coverage too, but Bell Gardens is out of Area. Give the Area boys coverage.

RHL said:

You should send mario to the LC-Monrovia game because this week can maybe tell who is going to be the top two teams in the RHL...I Have been reading a lot about LC and so lets see what they do against a good team and this is a test for SM and TC on what they got...the winners of today might be battling for next week so it will be good to cover those two games
