Alverno's Frankie Russo passes away. He was 48.

It's with deep regret I inform you the passing of Alverno athletic director and softball coach Frank Russo. He was 48.
Frank suffered a stroke Friday and was admitted to Verdugo Hills Hospital. He died Sunday afternoon.
Frank is survived by his father, Frank Sr., his mother, Carmela and his brother, Anthony.
Frank was the school's softball coach for 19 years and reached the CIF playoffs in all but one season, winning the CIF title in 2004. Frank received Star-News Coach of the Year honors in 2003.
Ann Gillick, Alverno's head of school, had a meeting with the softball team moments ago and they held a small service for Frank. Gillick said she will have a meeting tomorrow night to discuss who will take over as coach. Alverno will not practice today and resume tomorrow. They have a preseason game Saturday.
"Yesterday I was able to see him about five minutes before he died," Gillick said. "He is very much loved. We had a prayer service and I just met with the softball team a couple minutes ago. They loved him so much but best of all he was the best role model I've ever seen in my entire life, and that's the truth."
"I am at absolute loss for words at this moment, "San Gabriel Mission athletic director and coach Jaime Preciado said. "Frankie loved softball and Alverno. He was very passionate and (a) competitive man and I had a blast competing against him for five years. I will miss him."

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Having lived next door to the Russo family for 22 years,it was our pleasure to watch Frankie mature into the wonderful person everyone remembers. I think the reason he was so loved was because he respected people.
Frankie and I would often talk over the fence as he was either coming back from Alverno, a game, or the Restaurant. We talked about taking a trip to Italy with Frankie as our guide. I have him grief for getting the Hummer when the price of gas was high. He told me he had always wanted one and, now, I am so glad he got that car. Now the car and Frankie are gone and our hearts are broken.
I keep expecting to hear his dad yell "FRAN-KIE" down the driveway and then continue in half Italian half English something he needs to do. I miss Frankie's "Hey, Alex, how ya doing" when we saw each other in the front yard.
Talking with his parents, they are wonderfully surprised how many people were touched by their son. They continue to get notes from people sharing private stories about Frankie and it touches their hearts.
One small error, Frankie had just turned 46 when God took him from us, not 48.
My name is Michelle and I played softball for Alverno from 1995-1999. My family would visit the Russo restraunt, and even without me my parents would get a free apetizer from Frankie. A few years back, the girls and I lost Mike Talamantes Sr., who was the varsity volleyball and basketball coach for Alverno. At 27 I have a BA in psychology, BS in neuroscience, minor in women's studies from UCRiverside. I am finishing a masters in clinical psychology and am looking to start a JD/PhD in clinical psychology. I gladly credit part of my work ethic and commitment to skills I developed in Alverno Athletics. I was never the best athlete, but I was not bad when Mike and Frankie were done with me. They believed in me and taught me to work hard.. I am happy too have had such a wonderful experience as part of both Frankie and Mike's teams and in many respects I am a tougher, more commited person thanks to those experiences. Those memories and the beautiful people I met playing varsity volleyball, softball, and basketball at alverno are irreplacable. I am very thankful for the life experiences Frankie both directly and indirectly facilitated as my athletic director. My age group of athletes have now lost a second mentor, but are thankful to be stronger women as a result of the time and love of these coaches.
Frankie was the love of my life.
Someone I grew up with – caused mischief with his little brother Anthony - and Frankie always wondering what no good we were up too. Both my sisters, Veronica, Leticia and I, along with Paul and Doug have many great memories of Frankie.
Frankie was genuine, exceptional, extraordinary, and it followed him all throughout his life.
Both Frankie’s mother and my mother wanted me to marry Frankie. I loved Frankie too much. I told him, you never want to be my boyfriend because they always end up in the dog house – be smart always be my friend…because I will always love you, and you will always be in my life. And that he was. My Frankie exuberated innocence and kindness to everyone.
I am happy that both my little girls were able to be a part of Frankie’s life and to have known him. At least they experienced a glimpse of what I experienced of Frankie. I was honored to have my daughter altar serve at the funeral mass.
A piece of my heart is gone. My only regret in life – was not to have married Frankie.
He is a loving son; he would have been a most loving husband and father. I know it! It was so difficult to walk in his room the other day and see all his pictures, of all of us.
I remember how much his mother wanted him to concentrate more on the business, and wanted me to talk with Frankie, but Frankie was so dedicated and loved his girls at Alverno. Alverno always came first before his own family business.
Mr. & Mrs. Russo are family friends over 30 years – Frankie is a big loss – more than I can explain in words. They are reading all the write ups about Frankie, and are very proud as they read the articles out loud. And at the same time filled with sadness that Frankie is no longer with us. It is hard to sit at the big Russo kitchen table, and look at the door where Frankie use to pop in. It is difficult to accept that he will never walk through those doors again.
I love you Frankie - I will miss you forever - you broke my heart. Arlene
I am a freshman at Alverno and although I never was able to officially meet Frankie, I still know that he was a wonderful person with a kind heart. All of the people who really knew him told the freshman the funny moments they had with him. I know everyone will miss him. May Frankie Rest in peace.

Frankie,
I am a junior at Alverno and i have played for Frankie for two years. I remember when I was in eigth grade Frankie and Vinnie came to my softball game and kept telling me to come to Alverno and I can honestly say they are the reason why I came. Frankie made me love the sport and encouraged me to always try my best and if that was not enough for myself it was for him. He always knew what to tell me to make me feel better. If I was having a bad practice when I would get home I would have a call from him and he would ask, "Ms. Sanchez is everything okay?" Frankie was always there for me, for all of us. He made me a stronger and better person. FRANKIE THE SOCCER TEAM WON CIF!! JUST FOR YOU! This softball season will not be the same without you but I know I will try my hardest. It is hard looking down at the third base coach without you being there. I miss you.. We all do.. Russo family stay strong because that is what Frankie would have wanted because I know how important family was to him.
Love,

Frankie was my daughter's sports director now for three years and a big part of all the girls life. It brings me great joy to have him there for my daughter through all of the seasons of basketball and volleyball. He was definitley and big role model on all of our girls and I am glad that I did know Frankie. He always made you smile with his great smile and his laugh just made you laugh even though you had no clue what was being said. I had always been grateful for Frankie because, I am always the mom running late picking my daughter up from practice or games and he always was there waiting, I will always remember Frankie for the great person that he was and a kind hearted man he was. May God Bless you and your family and May You Rest In Peace. You are going to be missed.
I am very sad about Frankie's passing. I have known Frankie since we were kids and my brothers and I used to visit my aunt in California and would visit with the Russo family. Frankie was such a kind and caring individual, we had many laughs growing up and he will be sadly missed. I want to offer my condolences to the family and to know that Frankie touched many lives and he will never be forgotten. We will miss him dearly!
It is with a very sad heart that I write this. From the moment that I met Frankie I knew he was a very special person, very warm and full of heart. Watching how he worked with the girls at Alverno and with our daughter Michelle, I could tell that he wanted the best for all of them in everything they did and will do in their lives. I know that he will be greatly missed by so many people. May God take him under his wing and bless his family in this time of sadness.
I and so many others were touched deeply by Frankie. I know that he lives inside of each and every one of the people he has met throughout his lifetime and we will all go forth sharing just a bit of Frankie; whether that be by sharing some fun time u had shared, talking about old softball memories or quoting him from some Italian saying he used to say. Frankie was amazing, honest, compassionate and so much more. He cared deeply for all the girls he has ever coached and remembered every name and every position of each player. This will be no doubt a difficult time for all of those who knew him, myself included, but as a family we will all get through it. Now we must go on with our lives just as he would have wanted, celebrate the times we shared with him, be happy and of course play softball.
Frankie You will be deeply missed! Saturday practice at 9am will never be the same without you! (that is if i wake up that early :) haha )
Miss you and love you always,
Kristine
I knew Frankie all four years I was on the Softball team and also the volleyball team. He was always there to support you and to coach you to help you be the best you could be. One of the best qualities I learned from him was patience, if someone was talking he would always stop and let them finish if they needed. Now that was usually just to get the girls on the team to stop talking long enough so that we could listen to his thoughts of the day, but when I thought about it, I realized how important it is to truly listen to people.
I will always remember the great big smile he had and the deep laugh that always made you smile no matter what mood you were in. He has touched the lives of so many people that I am truly grateful I got the chance to know him as well as I did.
For all those times we complained complained on the field about the heat, the length of practice, or the repetition of the drills; I thank him for pushing us and making all of us who we are today. For I know that I am a better person because of it.
And for as much as it pains an Angels fan like me to say it, I will say it for Frankie: GO DODGERS!
Rest peacefully my friend,
Michelle (Baroldi)
Frankie!!
Frankie was one of my best friends since moving to CA from IL way back in 1981. We lived 1 block from him, and always used to go to his house for lunch, where mama and papa Russo would make us eat and eat, or hit us with a big wooden spoon. He, Paul P (above), and I would often do things together all the time, especially summer. My dad emailed that he remembered Frankie's cannonballs would always empty the pool.
He brought smiles to everyone he met, and the laugh in his voice and in his eyes was something you'd never forget. Frankie has always been a wonderful person, an outstanding citizen, and a role model. We've still been in touch over all the years and across many miles (I'm in MN now), but often only christmas cards as "life" gets busy sometimes.
You could count on Frankie for anything, anytime, he was always there to help out if someone needed something. Frankie had a subtly profound effect on me, and that he is gone leaves me numb with deep sadness. I am sorry that I didn't get to talk with him recently.
To Mama, Papa, and Anthony Russo...my thoughts and prayers are with you. For anyone who knew him, the loss we feel can only be that much greater for you, and my heart goes out to all his family, friends, colleagues, students, and players. Now that he has joined God's Kingdom in Heaven, I've no doubt that once he settles in, there will be many more teams of Angels playing sports for Frankie. I can picture the excitement on his face and hear his laugh, and I miss him that much more already. He lives on in memories we made, forever.
Sincere condolences to Frankie's Alverno Family from his friends at
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.

Frankie!
it is so great to see all the love in these notes from his 'girls'.
I have had the pleasure to know frankie from the age of 5. We grew up together playing as kids, we have had alot of tears both happy and sad. To know he remained true to his personality and his genuine love of sports, brings a smile to my face.
Frankie would always make us laugh and have the permanent smile and chuckle in his belly.
We will all miss him and his uplifting responses.
Frank Sr and Carmela your son blessed so many lives and gave encouragement to all, he is resting well.
he is missed.

Is sad for the SGV to lose a great coach and a great person. I did not know Coach Russo, but I read about him on the Star News for several years. God Bless the Russo family.
As a coach, the greatest positive impacts for life's challenges are learned on the field before and after defeat. Making the positive difference for one person, its worth the time to coach. Is not always how to play the sport, but how to learn from the drills and inspiring words of wisdom given by coaches.

im a senior at alverno and as a capitan i was reallly close to frankie when it came to softball or even anything for that matter. he was always there for me. we are all deeply saddened for this loss but we will be strong because we know thats what he would have wanted. For as sad as i am that he's gone i cant help but smile and laugh every time i think of him. He was truely one of the most caring and genuinely one of the nicest people i have ever met. The girls on the softball team have a joke that even though frankie never had any children of his own, he always had 15 daughters when the spring rolled around. we'll miss you frankie.
I'm a senior at Alverno and i didn't really get to know Frankie very well but he use to go to most of our basketball practices and games, and he use to drive us sometimes, and we always had funny moments with him. Just trying to get him to shoot a basket, or him playing his christmas songs in the van on the way to games..we'll never forget you Frankie! Today was a hard day for a lot of people at school. It's not gonna be the same without you. A lot of people are going to the soccer game tomorrow cuz we know that's what he would want. Just know, our soccer and softball teams are gonna do everything to get those CIF rings Frankie..just for you..we love you.

Frankie was always such a great person. I am very sad about what happened but he's always going to be with me and the rest of the people who's lives he has touched. I will miss him so much and Frankie this isn't goodbye, it's I'll see ya later.
yours truly, Miss. Long
I am saddened by the news of the loss of Frankie. He was a heck of a guy and one of the easiest coaches to deal with which is saying something. May he rest in peace.
I am a freshman at Alverno and I knew Frankie by being on the basketball team. He would always make the whole team laugh. He was very kind he would always make sure that everyone got to practice on time. Frankie will be missed terribly. May he rest in peace.

I am also a Freshman at Alverno and didn't personally know Frankie. But everytime I saw him he was always either laughing, smiling, or both :]. I always saw him during track coaching the softball team and would laugh whenever he would drive his Hummer out onto the field and park; me and my friend Jansee would always laugh. He will be greatly missed, may he Rest In Peace.
Although I personally did not know Frankie, I heard a lot of wonderful stories about him from my peers at Alverno. And through these stories, I was able to tell that he truly wanted the best for us Alverno girls. His love and care will always be cherished and kept in the hearts of others. May he rest in peace.

Well, lets see where do i start? I actually meet "BIG DAWG" thru my cousin Brent. Brent, Frankie and I would usually meet up on Sun, Mon, and Thurs to hang out and watch whatever sporting event was being tevelevised that night. It was funny cause each day of the week that we'd meet up, we had a different spot to eat, chit chat and of course drink Frankie's favorite.... DIET COKE. BIG DAWG, I've told you this before and I'll tell you this again now....YOU ARE THE MAN!! Brent & I will miss stopping into Dominic's and eating on Friday nights before going to the St. Francis football games. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten by us or any of our lil hot spots. So BIG DAWG, i'll leave you with this, from ME, and all the people that you touched at Charlie's, Robin's, The Vault and Frontera's..."GOOD PLAY DAWG" You will be Missed!!! Thanks for the memories!
Victor
Since I was a freshman and I wasn't in any sports, I didn't really know Frankie that well. I've met him a couple of times and he was nice and kind. May he rest in peace.
we didn't know Frankie that well but he will be in our prayers. We will miss him dearly.
i'm a freshman at Alverno Highschool. i didn't know Frankie that long, but i enjoyed the time i spent with him. i remember when i broke my ankle during a volleyball game,i was sooo scared that my ankle was going to be messed up, but frankie calmed me down and told me that everything was going to be alright. he tried to cheer me up by making me laugh and sharing funny stories. when i showed up on crutchees at the next volleyball game he asked me what was wrong with my ankle and all these other questions. it felt like he really cared and he always made me laugh. Frankie russo was the sweetest, nicest, caring guy i've met in sooo long. i'm really sad that i didn't have the chance to get to know him better, because i really wish i had. miss you frankie!!
Chellee & I are freshmen here at Alverno, and we are on the softball team(: We love Frankie sooooo much, he was the sauce to our spaghetti (insider! :D) He was a great coach, and an even better friend. may he rest in peace & watch over us as we begin the softball season. 48 is so young. What a terrible tragedy.
This is very sad. I didn't know Frankie that well, I had met him a couple of times and we played against Alverno last year once. He was a good guy and will be missed.
