BREAKING NEWS: How do I say goodbye?

| | Comments (58) |

It's time to say goodbye. But before you reach for a box of Kleenex or, more like, jump up and down with joy I must tell you my goodbye won't be for long. See, beginning Thursday I will be off for five days. I'll reclaim my seat at the office come Tuesday. Between now and then the blog will practically shut down, unless your old pal Freddy J. Robledo decides to chime in once in a while. I won't expect to maintain the 5,000 hits a day while I'm gone but that's OK. We'll get things back in order soon. Keith Lair will be gone, too, but he'll return Monday and have two stories ready to go in Tuesday's paper. If you see my column in Friday's paper it's only because I cranked it out during my regular shift Wednesday. In the meantime, I'll spend time with the Nurse (I know she's reading), finish furnishing the new townhouse and execute the workout regiment. I lost nine pounds last week, if anybody's keeping track =) No Cabo. No San Diego. No. San Francisco. South Pasadena will do just fine. Keep it clean on the blog. Over and out.

i think sf should have a decent quarterback this year. hes looks to me about 6'1 and has a decent arm. i dont expect that big numbers tho, with dietrich riley in he back field, the way sf utilizes him

BigFatFan said:

Goldenarm, you are a class act. From what I hear, SP football is hitting the weightroom more this offseason. you are right, our kids were just plain worn down by the end of the third quarter in many of the games last season. We'd play a pretty decent first half, then collapse. No. 20 will be back, and I think we will have some good juniors arriving from the JV team. I saw Bednarski at one of the varsity baseball games and he looks to be about 6'-3" now, and putting on some weight. See you in the Fall!!

Pacific League(PL)... no end in sight!!!

It's nice to see that some still have hope and love for the PL.

The economy has a better chance to rebound than the PL does. Not only looking at the fact Glendale and Hoover should have been kicked out years ago and riddled with poor coaching, losing talented players to private and other perimeter schools has happened for too long.

The PL is prime for a good coaching staff to come in and dominate. Muir has been the top team for awhile and thats with a POP Warner staff at best.

Let's have hope that the PL makes the changes it needs or we may end up aspiring to be the RHL.

BigFatFan,

Last year, the SP D and O lineman included some sophs and overall were pretty inexperienced...by the 3rd quarter these kids were beat down and just not able to withstand the pounding. I would expect that experience is going to make the SP interior line a much better unit in 09. Much better.
I for one, was extremely impressed with Bednarski's mechanics and above all, accuracy and touch. With a stronger wall up front, this kid is capable of ripping a secondary, given the right offensive scheme. He would benefit from some offseason weight work, because he needs some bulk on that thin frame, but I would love having a kid like that at TC. He could exceed expectation next year.
No replacing Colliau ....but I think #20 from last year is returning?? That kid could scoot - and would be a great target from the slot or out of the backfield.

Also - I can't forget the courtesy of the SP folk when we maxed the visitor stands...several people came and invited us to sit on the homefield side, even clearing a section entirely for the green and gold and the announcers finally putting the invite on the PA. Good peeps....you won't find that hospitality just anywhere.

BigFatFan said:

I heard that SP was adjusting their offense for the upcoming season to feature more throwing and running from soon-to-be junior QB Bednarski. It will be tough to replace a kid like Steven Colliau at SP who had 70 catches from Bednarski. hopefully a couple of kids from the JV squad will rise to the ocassion and become dependable set of receivers for the strong armed QB. last year's baptism by fire will really help Bednarski in the Fall.

The Stang Fan said:

GA,

Our QB will be the kid who played last year, Jarron Williams. He's a decent player/athlete who doesn't have the rocket arm but manages the game well. He is also a damn good DB.

Goldenarm said:

I should have included Bueno...he is a gamer and double threat, the year of exp will is a big factor...I am glad the QB topic at least brought a brief flurry of life around here

Who will be QB for the Stangs?

If Diamante has the strong O/D-line as Apache Joe mentions...that may be plenty to build on to get some W's for Arcadia. TC/Arcadia is game 3 next year, not sure if Arcadia/ Wildcats is game one again?

Apache Joe said:

The Stang Fan,

I agree with you. Things are not on the upturn. The overall talent is dwindling, we do have diamond in the rough types of kids but they are few and far between. I would be shocked if Arcadia wins 7 games next year. Had they been healthy this year, they should've been in the 6-7 win range and next season's team will have less talent than the 4-6 Arcadia team of this year.

Arcadia is young this year at the skill positions (other than the QB) and senior-heavy at the line positions.

Taylor Lagace, the upcoming-sophomore receiver/free safety should be a stud for them.

The Stang Fan said:

Apache Joe,

It is CRITICAL for the success of the Pacific League to have a STRONG Arcadia team. I am hopeful that last year's troubles were an aberration and that the Apaches will bounce back to those formiddable teams of yesteryear.

I've got to be honest though, from what I have observed the last two years in our games against you guys, as well as the JV games, things don't look so good. Again, hopefully Dimalante will find some some talent on campus and turn the Apaches into the strong team they should be.

RE: QB's to watch -

I think last season Nick Bueno, as a sophomore, was told to execute the game plan, and don't make mistakes - he did this admirably. He was not too fancy, was not a "big play" QB, but he executed the plan and did not make many mistakes. This was the plan the Steelers took with Rothlesberger as a rookie.

Bueno will be a junior, with a year of starting experience, and is no doubt smarter, stroger, and more confident. I think I agree with Anne Onimous (good name) that this could be a breakout year for him.

Apache Joe said:

I think Garret Tuck of Arcadia should have a decent year. They lost a lot of skill guys, (Raspa, Rambeau, Golper, Ma) who were all their leading receivers but they return two freshman who should be studs.

Taylor Lagace. Remember that name. He is going to be a good one out on the gridiron.

On the topic of who will emerge as the best area QB, I think you would also have to include sophomore QB Nick Bueno at Monrovia in the RHL. He threw for over 1,000 yards on a team with one RB rushing over 2,000 yds, another one for almost 600 yds, and two other RBs rushing for over 300 yds each. He was able to get his numbers passing and also managed to get over 200 yds rushing himself. Just my opinion. I can't wait to watch this kid next year.

Did Glendale ever hire a HC? When does McFarland meet the PHS kids?

What is happening with Tip at Duarte?

Will Miquel become editor of Nurses Weekly?

Is Arcadia going to field a strong team come September?

Who will emerge as the best area QB, (Rettig now down at San Clemente), we have Rocky Moore and Bednarski in the RHL...who else can sling it??

Will San Marino actually be a better team this year than last??

Will the East Side remember all the words they ate last season and give us a sliver of respect over here come September??? That is a blog topic by itself.

5 days of R&R with the Nurse? No way your karma is that good....but enjoy the vacation.

Maybe Lair can snag an interview or Q&A with coach White.... hopefully that is on the Melendez agenda, as the McFarland Q&A was interesting.
