Football: Temple City down to three finalists

| | Comments (87) |

Temple City brought back two of the three finalists for a second interview last week and they will interview the third finalist for a second time later today. Once the school makes a decision they will recommend its selection to the Temple City Unified School Board. Temple City is expected to make an announcement sometime next week. I've heard two of the three names but until I can confirm I won't post them. But the fact Temple City has really got things moving is a good sign. I would call Pasadena to get the latest over on its end and hiring progress, but I wonder if that would be a waste of time ...

One of the reasons I am concerned about TC's coaching situation and the fact it has dragged on for so long is at La Salle last year Coach Peterson felt he had to throw things together quickly after Gallagher left - assemble coaching staff, get program moving forward again, keep star QB happy in quest for D1 scholarship, etc. This season, he actually has a chance to plan, something the TC staff may not have a luxury to do.

Last year at La Salle it was a perfect storm - new coaching staff, a one dimensional offense, injuries. I can't believe in two sub-par years, but I am always optimistic, and looking forward to next year.

Big Fat Fan -

Regarding "who will sling the rock at La Salle," I like to spread facts, and all I have now is rumors. Suffice to say la Salle will probably run more this year - we had success when we ran last year. Most of the O-line is returning, and they are more experienced. I have a feeling they will throw maybe 10 times a game at the most (unlike the 48 attempts against maranatha last year!) and the attack will be more balanced. With Rettig at La Salle the last three years, no QB was developed, and many kids who probably wanted to play QB ruled it out, as Chase was the pre-ordained starter. I think they are looking at a senior who is a leader with good football smarts (but not much QB experience), another player who is a good athlete, has some QB experience, but may be more valuable playing other postions, and they will no doubt look at last year's JV QB. At least there is time to look and time to plan - someting TC may not have too much of.

Spring football is two months away!!! Good luck to all!!

BigFatFan said:

La Salle football and La Salle people seem the type not to let the program turn to shambles. Last year was heavy on injury and a slew of other "issues" came to light..and a fairly horrible year followed.

Maybe someone in the know can say what is happening there now -tough to believe back to back years of sub-mediocrity from La Salle.

Really? said:

It's good to see some good football posts going on. I guess it doesn't matter what time of year, football dominates the boards! Seeing everyone talk about Maranatha and transfers makes me laugh. Are we really talking about little Maranatha and speculating that they might become a powerhouse in the Pasadena area? I realize they're not the same program they used to be before Coach Murphy took over but come on people! It's always interesting to see how transfers affect team chemistry but I can't imagine it will adversely affect Maranatha's. I'm still shocked that we're talking about Maranatha in March. Who would have thought that the little school from Sierra Madre would even be able to make waves on the athletic scene. Gotta admit that even though I'm more of a Lancer fan, I'm impressed with what Maranatha is doing and the crediblity they're establishing. On another note, anyone know if La Salle is going "another direction" with Coach Peterson? What a rough start. Now to lose Chase Rettig to San Clemente I can't wait to see how they rebuild and recover from this.

Goldenarm said:

Last thing I read was Thropay was working out at SHills, with some gray area on eligibility. The Trib folk probably have his current GPS location.

I last saw him play 3 years ago.

BigFatFan said:

Goteamgo: with Rettig gone, who is going to be slinging the rock for La Salle this Fall?

BigFatFan said:

GoldenArm, thanks for bringing up Thropay, I could not recall his name yesterday, but his sad case is similar to what is unfolding at Maranatha. I seem to recall that Thropay was not even eligible to play this last season due to his parent's hopscotching him around the San Gabriel valley. No doubt if he would have stuck at Monrovia, he would have played last year as a soph, and for sure this year as a starting junior. Parents can really screw things up for their kids.

Goldenarm said:

I guess I should be happy that TC did not have to "expand" their defense out 60 yds to prevent a Thropay to Marquise Williams post route.

In reality though, I would have preferred to watch the kid represent the SGV in CIF play as a Wildcat....or hahaha,,,as a TC transfer.

GA,

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen, A-M-E-N!!!!!

goteamgo said:

I forgot about Thropay - three schools, in only two years. Maybe his parents can't afford the private QB coach.

This Cody Keith does not strike me as something Maranatha would have done in the past, i.e., bring in a hired gun for one year athletic glory. They must have succumbed to outside pressure, or re-thought what they think is important. They need to be aware that kid is not there for the team, he is there to put up individual stats, and fottball is still a ream game.

Goldenarm said:

Please.....no Mark Keppel comparisons.

Reading about Cody Keith, makes me flash on Josiah Thropay, who has ping-ponged across area high schools since leaving the grass fields of Monrovia for "greener pastures". There is no doubt the search for the "ideal" showplace and "eyes on" exposure level can go seriously wrong. It is amazing how fast a freshman becomes a senior and boom....the time has just plain blown past.
In the case of Thropay, in my opinion, had he lingered at M-town, he would be on that marquee today, not still seeking it. I sincerely hope that this is the kids "big year" and it all works out.

I say this in support of The Stang Fan's point on the familiar exodus of raw talent which sometimes seems "rushed" to leave our area and find the yellow brick road somewhere else. Another reason why I hope Golper excels as a Bruin. We need more clear and definite examples that SGV football CAN be the launching pad, and that the bus to Amat is not always the best ticket to what you seek.

Apache Joe,

I am hoping that Press receives the AD position. I think it will be difficult for him to leave the classroom, though. I firmly believe that his passion is in the classroom, but AHS sports needs his talents in the AD office. It will be great for the school after having subpar ADs over the years, who didn't really put forth any effort. By the way, Press is 30.

Man, I can't wait to see that Golper kid to rip it up @ucla. He's everything you want in a LB. Plus, he plays pissed off every down & brings the wood. I am a usc fan, but I will watch every down that golper plays for the next 4 years.

Sensing the importance of QB play (it is the most difficult of all sports); RB had a QB camp at TC over the summer the past two years. It was free of charge to any kid who wanted to play QB and was 3 days per week for 6 weeks. FREE! Under this system and Loya's tutelage, Morgan Hatch became the best TC QB since Matt Malczynski. With a new direction...who knows? Remember Mark Keppel a couple of years ago when they hired an actor who played QB and was a playwright...TC don't turn into MK!

BigFatFan,

The kid should be allowed to play...period, but CIF may think otherwise. I'm sure the kid has some talent, and even though Clarkson might be JUST a little bit biased to a kid whose parents are "breaking him off," I'm sure Clarkson isn't going to damage his reputation by praising a kid who doesn't deserve the accolades.

The funny thing is that even with this new kid on campus, the best "potential" QB at the school just happens to throw a 94 mph fastball and will never even touch a football field...lol!

I also found your comment about Clarkson's presence in Pasadena interesting. He brought Ryan O'Hara and Richard Irvin to Muir and now this kid to The Natha. The Rivals.com article mentions how Maranatha is up and coming because Pasadena is full of athletes. If only Clarkson would devote as much time in brining players TO Pasadena to the ones who LEAVE Pasadena, this area would have some VERY strong teams. And in case you're reading this Steve, just start your efforts at Alemany and work your way through Notre Dame, Loyola, Charter Oak and South Hills.

I know, I know....but sorry guys, I just won't let this go.....

BigFatFan said:

StangFan: I am sure that the other coaches in the Alpha League will be pouring over the CIF transfer rules to check this one out. If... the kid is really that good. all we are going on at this point is Clarkson's praise that this kid is great. if you pay $600 per month for lessons from Clarkson, he better be saying great things about your kid. Sounds like he was unable to beat out the incumbent varsity starter when he was a sophmore, so maybe he is not so hot. time will tell.

BigFatFan said:

goteamgo: sounds like the kid came out here to be close to the Clarkson QB training in Pasadena, then hooked on with Maranatha. three high schools in three years, hmmm. does not sound good for Maranatha chemistry.

The Stang Fan said:

goteamgo and BigFatFan,

WHOA!!! Helluva find goteamgo! Many interesting things pour out of that article. Not quite sure how many of you are aware with what happened at SOuth Hills recently with a transfer they had from West Covina. Apparently the parents followed all the appropriate measures and moved into South Hills boundaries. However, CIF ruled the kid ineligble because the move was "athletically motivated." They couldn't possibly deny a kid who moves in from the EAST COAST, could they?

That would be total BS quite frankly. If parents are willing to do that much for their kid, the player shouldn't be barred from playing.

Although "hired guns" do screw it up for home-grown kids who have been giving their all for their school since their freshmen years.

NY,

Transferring from Harvard-Westlake to Muir aint got NOTHING on transferring from North Carolina to Cali....lol!!!

BigFatFan:

Since Maranatha is on La Salle's schedule, out of curiousity (or boredom) I Googled the new Marantha QB's name, and referenced the article below. Yes, he is coming to Marantha as a senior - he is a one and done. He did not like the school he played at as a junior, as they did not throw enough. Transferred from the school he played at as a sophomore because someone else would have started ahead of him as a junior.

The article is dated 11/23/08 (fairly recent) and the quotes at the end say it all:

"Still, new rumors have cropped up. South Meck rarely throws the ball, so Cody gets few chances to show off his arm. Greg Keith says he hears he's transferring his son to Charlotte Latin or Charlotte Christian or Country Day so he can have a bigger role in a different offense.

None of it's true, he said. "We're very happy at South Meck." (LIAR!)

I just wonder how this will impact the "team chemistry" at Maranatha. They have done a good job with the talent they have. Beckwith, I assume, was planning to be the starter, and now a hired gun has come in. The new QB looks like he has some high-maintenance parents, and a private QB coach.Time will tell if things work.

You are correct. Irvin transferred to Harvard from Tulane. Apparently as an underclassman at Tulane he threw five TDs against Texas Tech, but he still transferred. I did not realize that was after the Hurricane.

Goldenarm,
I truly hope the Rams do not fall off like that, but with the amount of athletic parity among TC, South Pas, San Marino and La Canada, it has always been the Rams' off-season focus that made the difference. Blair is a complete mystery right now. Will they be the team from two years ago, the team from four years ago, the team from last season, or something else?

I am looking forward to seeing what Coach Sanders can do with Duarte.

I wish coach Murphy luck, building an offense around one player to feature a star QB, with a private QB coach and over-involved parents looking on. I hope their team chemistry survives (didn't Marantha have a QB in the wings who was supposed to be pretty good?) When things go bad, will he blame his teammates, and say he should have been surrounded by more "talent?"

Good luck.

Missing the playoffs is an all too real possibility. I never thought of the Rams program health as being vital to others, but clearly the point carries weight. It just has never been a concern before. Your comment on the Wing T - IS FAR MORE INTUITIVE than you could possibly know in the current situation... the NY DNA continues to show links to Nostradamus, the great predictor.

Let me chime in here...

Saw the admin giving the tours to candidates last friday afterschool i think. The admin was pretty slow on finally getting their sh*t together and begin the hiring process, but I'm going to defend the admin for the first time in my life- they do kinda have more important things to tend to before football (not saying they weren't slow). There's a WASC accreditation in a week or two which has devoted a lot of time and resources in preparing pretty much all year, as well as the lingering budget cut issues which pretty have everyone throughout the district on their 6th cup of coffee.

Good to see that a lot of the guys for next year are still working out though either on their own or in another sport. A lot of the guys that'll be playing next year can be spotted playing some ramball or in the weight rooms afterschool. kudos.

BigFatFan,

I hear you. $600 a MONTH?!?!?! Damn!!! That, on top of a private school education for some of these guys....I guess some of us AREN'T feeling the effects of the recession. If I am paying $7200 a year on my young pup to learn how to throw the rock, his ass BETTER be playing at the next level!!! Anyhow, like Muir in the early 2000's it looks like you guys benefit somewhat for Clarkson's presence on your campus....although in the long run he and Mims eventually hurt Muir more than they helped.

NY,

Yeah, I remember. And as I mentioned above I think that eventually hurt Muir more. Remember, they were putting up like 40 points a game....problem was, they were giving up around 42....btw, I heard that kid ended up transferring from Tulane to Harvard shortly after the Hurricane. And they said Muir can't get kids into Harvard! Lol....

New York,

You are absolutely correct. A hefty dose of iron, gut busting agilities, and football related activities make a great off season program. When Soumakian moved on, Backus ran the offseason before DiFiori's arrival. When Difi moved on to Bishop Amat, Backus ran the offseason program before Mooney's arrival. And when Mooney moved down Huntington Drive, Backus ran the offseason program. He did this because it was the right thing to do for the players. Prior to being named head coach in 2007, Backus did spring training and several weeks of summer workouts with the knowledge that he may not be the guy. Last year's offseason was the catylast for this past season's success as the players were strong, quick, and had a solid understanding of the fundamentals through classwork, DVDs, and upgraded passing leagues. Now, the TCHS administration won't even allow the JV coaches to work out the players. What happens if the new coach is walk on and there is no 7th period? M-Town gets stronger and the Rams get weaker in every aspect as Maddox has it going on over there! (By the way New York, you wuz good! That Wildcat team was loaded and the real deal!)

New York said:

A weak TC hurts every team on TC's schedule. Monrovia needs to battle TC and others in order to prep for the playoffs. We rely on TC to test our D-line with a steady dose of dive, blast and power. Dedicated and savvy coaching has been critical for TC since 1996 when DiFiori took the reigns. The year before was a disaster. TC was slow as mollases and tried running a Wing-T.

Even though DiFiori's TC teams never beat Monrovia, TC was always well-prepared. Mooney teams did very well against Monrovia.

It's disheartening to hear that TC does not have a solid weight program right now. If that is true, there is a decent chance they could miss the playoffs. Weightlifting and near perfect execution was the foundation for many successful TC teams.

I hope TC's new coach can quickly right the ship. The WSGV and RHL need a strong TC.

TCHS is a great School District. No one can argue with their dedication to the learning process and their passion for children to reach and get challenged in the class room. GA has every right to express his frustration and outright rant about it. To quote the great Fredrick Douglass, "Agitate Agitate Agitage." This process started in October and they failed in pulling the trigger early on. They have created their own mess through concerns of liability. They are big people and can handle the criticism. They have an Athletic Director who's responsibility is to "plan everything." Perhaps they elected to watch the dress rehearsal of Damm Yankees instead of picking a football Coach. Let's go TC, move ahead.

I would love to see last years back up, Drew Tinsley, get a condensed, full blown Clarkson Academy eval and training regimen.
DT has a prototype QB physique, nearly 6'4 and a good athlete, just lacks even marginal pocket or huddle time. Drew kicked a 42 yarder through the uprights against the Clete in the season finale. He got few snaps last year.

It is always nice when out the blue, someone loses TV reception on "Dancing With the Stars", and out of sheer frustration, chooses to comment on a sports blog.

TC has been an education first environment for many, many years, all the while maintaining a high level of competitiveness in athletics, not football alone. Had you read any of the prior posts here, even the mildly attentive person would note both respect and concern regarding the current "new direction" at TC....and these comments come from TC OPPONENTS!

Accepting half-ass effort is not and has never been the credo of Ram football. Some of the current decision makers have been around long enough to know the nuts and bolts of this. This only deepens the degree of disbelief in how things have gone down to this point.

Nobody asked for "everything" Greg, just a simple 7th period weightlifting/agility type interim set up...until someone assumes the HC roll. I have no intent of outlining how such a strength program impacts the trench wars that will happen come October. Just imagine yourself fighting with a dude stronger, quicker, better conditioned than yourself - for 60 minutes or so. To win that fight, you start preparing now, long before even knowing the face of your opponent.

Lastly. Greg, I'm not a happy dude right now. The appearance of some intelligent, motivated football people at North Field, people who are ready to motivate kids and stir a full tilt work effort toward the 09 season - is the panacea for what ails me. Crap, if I saw some drills and heard some screaming -I might even burst with optimism.

Until then,
Relax on the admin?? Chances are nil.

You bag on the administration for lack of arrangement of organized activities. As if that is the only thing on their agenda. These are education-first people, and I'm sure they have a lot more on their minds than to arrange organized activities for the football team. So if every sport lacked a head coach due to being fired or resignation, they would have to plan everything? Relax on the administration.

I can't believe that this has dragged on for so long. As GA pointed out, it will be mid-April until a coaching staff is in place, and then May is Spring football.

It takes time to pull a coaching staff together, evaluate the talent, decide on what type of offense/defense to run, etc. The only team that seemed to do well that changed coaches last year was Monrovia.

Time will tell, but you are leaving a coach with one month to pull together a staff and a system before spring workouts. I have no connection to TCHS, but I have always had a great respect for TC football, but I have to wonder what is going on, and who is running the asylum.

Maybe they will make a current assistant head coach, which will help with the continuity and talent evaluation issues, but I have to wonder why this has dragged on for so long. Gives us La Salle fans some hope (10/9/08 at TC!!)

Stang fan; thanks for the info. My read on the Clarkson gang in particular is that if your sons family is willing to pay $600 per month to send your kid to the private trainings that Clarkson runs out of the facility at Maranatha HS, then they will practically gush great things about any of these high-paying clients. Frankly, we attended one of their camps in Feb, and the only kids that got hyped after the camp was over, appeared to be kids that were already in the Clarkson stable. so I am a bit skeptical of these accolades that Clarkson dishes out.

Granted, if you pay the fee, they (Clarkson) will probably pull out all the stops and get your kid into a college. I think Matt Schiltz from Maranatha is a perfect example. after the deal with Kansas State went south, I am sure that the Clarkson people were on the phone pronto with their contacts in the D1 football world. congrats to Schiltz, Clarkson landed him a spot at Bowling Green.

A little something for you fans over at The Natha per yahoo! and Rivals.com. Pay particular attention to the 4th paragraph:

California is known for its quarterbacks. One of the reasons for this is the excellent private coaching that young signal callers have access to in the Golden State and one of the very best is Steve Clarkson, who started Air 7 and now the Steve Clarkson Quarterback Academy.

Clarkson has an excellent track record for developing D-I quarterbacks dating back to the early 1990’s so when he tells you he has sleeper quarterbacks that colleges should be aware of it is an eye opener.

The following quarterbacks all play for small schools that are off the beaten path of college recruiters, but according to Clarkson will be getting recruiting action so their status as sleepers could change to prospect over the spring evaluation period.

Keep your eye on Cody Keith (6-3, 195, 4.7) from Pasadena (Calif.) Maranatha. The Maranatha program is one to become aware of as their goal is become a mini Oaks Christian out in the Pasadena area, a section in Southern California that has athletes.

Keith played in North Carolina as junior where he threw for close to 1,200 yards, 11 touchdowns against only two interceptions while playing for Charlotte (N.C.) North Mecklenburg, which according to Clarkson is mainly a running team.

Clarkson feels very highly about Keith.

“Cody has a good arm and has excellent football savvy,” Clarkson said. “He’s athletic and very poised. He’s one of those quarterbacks who has the “it” factor.”
