Football: Temple City, Pasadena nearing decision

| | Comments (26) |

Word on the street (and by street I don't really mean an actual street) is that Pasadena High might make an announcement tomorrow to finally end the saga that's dragged on for much too long. They will name the new coach football coach four months after Kevin Mills resigned. When I find out I promise to let you all know. Over on Lemon Ave., according to an extremely (and I mean extremely) reliable source, Temple City should be making its choice to succeed the fired Randy Backus. Temple City is down to three finalists. The source I talked to said the last candidate was given a tour of the school Monday. I've also confirmed the three names but I've decided to not publish them until after the school board approves the candidate I know will be chosen.

When it comes to succinct on point blogs this is it - here is a little off point thing but it made me smile!

You’re only young once, but you can be immature forever.

Thanks for the link.

Yoder was overshadowed a bit by the AD, who was ultra comfortable. Yoder seemed a bit lacking in overall area school knowledge, and spoke as though worried he might blow it in front of the babe who signs his check....really just a little uncomfortable(but was smart enough to say he wanted to build an O -line in the tradition of the Temple City Rams.)

LC last year had one of the strongest and most talented D-lines we faced, very good at shooting the gaps and their alignment messed with some of the TC blocking schemes (not like the Rams have changed them much over the years).

From what I hear Yoder is well -liked...I think the RHL should expect a real strong Spartan squad come September. And by the way, unlike TC, Yoder's kids are working right now.

You are right about "failure", just wrong about the origin of it.

GoldenArm,

We have traded info on here some new some old. But with this last post, I have to Disagree. In the other posts you said that Backus was "awarded" with the Head Coaching Position. actually from my sources, TC settled on Backus you don't have a choice of anyone else in June. TC had a hard time accepting Backus, and for what occurred, they were right. Mooney was and will forever be remembered at TC as a very successful Head Coach with all the qualities. Backus will be remembered as the troubled one, who although pushed the kids on the field and in the classroom, failed to understand the complexity of being a Head Coach and the professionalism required. TC has had talent the past two years and has been in the division where we could compete and win playoff games that is on the kids playing not on Backus coaching alone, he missed most of those playoff games.

I was also there at the banquet where we did give Backus a great standing ovation for what he has done and for the 14 years of service he has committed to our program and school, but I was not standing for the black eye he has given this program or to show the TCUSD administration that they made a mistake. TC football has had too many ups and down the past two years with Backus at the Helm and this is a new start for our program, school, and community.

You continue to mention that none of the new candidates are not better then what we HAD, and by that I hope you are referring to Mooney because it could not get any worse than the past 2 years. yes Backus was a good average coach who will continue to be respected amongst his peers, but we all cannot forget what situation he has put us in.

Good Luck to the New TC Head Coach you have our full support and I will await the announcement and attend every game as I have for the past years

If you want to call watching an interview and forming an opinion based on the interview judging, so be it. It just doesn't look too good when your AD had to bail you out on questions pertaining to your football program. The guy probably is a great football mind and put him on the sideline and it's a different story. Even though I don't know coach Yoder, I do know plenty of coaches in the area and never have met any that were nervous or shy about being interviewed. Especially on an internet video interview that not many people are going to see anyway!

Go find the interview and see for yourself!

I have not seen the interview, but I have seen Yoder on the sideline as JV coach. He is plenty competent.

TC should announce today, but whether they will, who knows? Some good people applied (none better than we had)and to me, there is a candidate who best fits, and has the highest chance of gathering the ashes that this Admin has carelessly allowed to scatter...and somehow molding them back together into a competitive football team.
The 2009 season may have already been sacrificed due to bungling and inaction, and at this point, it is that season that matters most to me. Whether the new hire is capable of what the TC loyal have come to expect in the seasons beyond that, is an argument for another day.

The job, and the task at hand has been made more difficult and less likely to succeed under the umbrella of leadership currently directing TC Athletics. Excepting fantasy footballers and bloggers like Greg, all in the know understand this as true.

My attachment to this particaular season makes it all the more difficult to remain unbiased and not lean toward posts of raw profanity and personal attack, rather than general observations pinpointing inept, misguided or unprofessional instances of decision making during both the firing and hiring process.

It truly and unfortunately (regarding head coach Backus)is time to move on. That said I must say:

In two years it was no cake walk for RB.
Year 1 he is diagnosed with cancer, year 2 he gets suspended. He endured this and much more, and his Rams this year ran all the way to the CIF semi-finals, and like the playoff year before, lost to the eventual CIF champion.
Then comes word of his dismissal.
The banquet follows, where a couple All CIF, All League, All Area players step to the mic and directly credit Backus with pushing them, focusing them and being in their corner relentlessly. This is followed by 21 of 36 players standing as 3.0 and above students, several 4.0 and then the king, a 4.5 GPA dude.
Next, though expected,it still comes as a surprise. With the recently terminated Backus standing quietly aside, the entire squad stands, initiating a loud, clapping standing ovation...and the ovation soon spreads to all in the room. Pretty intense.

He was never my favorite coach. But, he was an outstanding coach. He made good kids better, both as players and people. Temple City quit on him, he never quit on Temple City.
Good luck to Randy Backus.

Is McFarland in the running for the PHS job?

Miguel,
CIF website does show the head coaching job for Marshall football open. Why did they wait so long?

Scoopy Doopy Doo said:

The man of the hour at Pasadena High School is a guy by the name of Mike McFarland(a good hire). Here is his resume from Missouri Western (where one of Pasadena's best players Tyron Crockum plays).

Assistant Football - Mike McFarland

Mike McFarland enters his second season on the Griffons football staff and will serve as the tight ends coach.

McFarland, originally from Modesto, Calif., came to Western after spending the 2006 season at Minnesota State University-Moorhead as the running backs coach.

He then coached the offensive line in the spring of 2007 and he also served as the primary academic coordinator for the football team.

Prior to MSU-Moorhead, McFarland was at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif. from 2002-2005. His duties at Occidental included coaching the offensive line in 2004-2005 and coordinating the strength and conditioning program in 2004. In 2002-2003 he served as the outside linebackers coach. McFarland also served as the head softball coach in 2004. Occidental advanced to the national playoffs in both 2004 and 2005 and made it as far as the quarterfinals in 2004 where they lost to the eventual National Champion Linfield College.

Prior to Occidental, McFarland was a special education teacher, assistant football coach and basketball coach at John Muir High School in Pasadena, Calif. In 1998-2000 he was a special education teacher, assistant football coach and head softball coach at Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra, Calif.

McFarland graduated from Arcadia High School where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in social sciences from California Lutheran University in 1997.

McFarland resides in St. Joseph, Mo. with his wife, Tiffany and stepdaughters Breanna and Brittany.

Goldenarm and the rest of the T.C. fans....

I have also heard from a reliable source who the candidtates are. There is one candidate who would be a really great choice. For the sake of the T.C. program I will be keeping my fingers crossed and really hope T.C.'s principal and AD make the right choice. The guy is a quality individual and coach! If they make the right choice, I think Ram football will be okay!

I am surprised there is a direction left to take, the new ones must be tapped out

This is definitely the year of the disposable coach.

Is Wilbur, from Charlotte's Web, the new head coach at phs? I'm kidding of course....we all know that's a flick of their Athletic Director Tony Brooks.

At least I'm sure that's how many phs fans feel.....

MM why the change of heart all of a sudden towards the TC Admin. Did Vandy drop a dime and offer season tickets? I guess Americans shouldn't be concerned with who is running for President in 4 years, just wake up in the morning and find out who won. This is high school football, wait, don't tell me Lane Kiffin just got fired from Tenn and is going to be introduced as the next HC of the Rams.....I get it.
