Discuss anything and everything you want ....

...So, who's surprised there are no area teams in the basketball championships this weekend? I was already planning my trip to Sacramento thinking the Pasadena boys and Muir girls would be my ticket to Arco Arena....

...I was very very impressed at how the Monrovia girls basketball team played with cohesion from start to end in its 79-68 loss to Foothill in Saturday's semifinals of the CIF-SS Division III-A playoffs. Maryum Jenkins played stellar, and what more can you say about Gina Henderson? 38 points for anybody is amazing...

....My baseball top 10 rankings are still not done. Off the top of my head I have 1. Arcadia; 2. St. Francis; 3. Maranatha; 4. La Canada ... From that point on I'm not so sure. It's looking like my baseball preview will run Wednesday....

....Monrovia will have a new football stadium after next season. But I'm excited the Wildcats will finally get a new gym, which should be completed in 2011, I think. Who came away impressed from Segerstrom High's beautiful gym?....

...Later this week, I will rank my best 10 favorite basketball players, both boys and girls. It's OK if you want to start with your list.....

.....It was a list of who's-who at Maranatha's girls soccer playoff game Thursday. I ran into Flintridge Sacred Heart coach Frank Pace, Alverno's Steve and Marina LESSE, Arcadia's Todd Golper who was 'reppin with his UCLA hat; Maranatha QB Matt Schilz, who by the way was wearing a K-State hoodie (Yea, I gave him a hard time about that, too), Maranatha pitcher Dylan Covey was there, and from what I hear so was Arcadia's Bryce Rutherford.....

pasadena beat the arcadia freshman team to clear that up

Putts: SP will finish ahead of Blair for one, and if TC is truly missing a couple of big guns on the mound, they could be in jeapordy of being passed up also.

Pasadena does have a good mix of young talent and a deep pitching staff they will surprise a lot of people this year, they also have a sophomore on JV that throws in the mid 80's but is ineligable this year, what a shame,

Looking forward to a good baseball season this year. I think PHS will be the one team to come out of nowhere and surprise many. Despite being so young, they have worked very hard under Parisi in the off-season, who has done a tremendous job. They seem to play well together and their defense has vastly improved. If they can iron out some wrinkles, they'll be a powerful force... if not this year.., next year for sure. It's about time Pasadena had a decent baseball program.

They scored a combined 25 runs last Saturday in two games. Admittedly, it was a scrimmage, but they beat some formidable forces in the area in the off-season including Monrovia, Arcadia, and San Marino.

It could get very interesting for this young crew, most of which are only sophomores.

who is SP going to finish ahead of?

Dark Knight said:

Again, commenting on a scrimmage is not warranted but in response to BFF's comment. SF had 2 errors to SP's 6 errors, not sure if we were watching the same game. SP will finish higher than 5th and I wish them well.

I'm back on this blog now that baseball is also. Was at the SP - St. Francis game. I agree with the Dark Knight, that had this been a "real" game, St. Francis would have prevailed 6-3 after 7 innings and that SP's comeback was basically against 2nd Team players. However, as pointed out by bigfatfan SP only carries 12 or 13 on the Varsity Roster and hit everyone. Overall what it showed to me was that St. Francis will indeed have its work cut out for them in league due to their lack of a dominant #1 pitcher, as they have had in years past. As far as fielding and hitting they will certainly hold their own with players such as their catcher Hubinger (regretably a South Pas kid). I wish them well, but I think they are going to have to outmuscle people if they are to make a staement in the WSGV. As far as SP, the word that comes to mind is "interesting". With 6 or 7 sophmores on the team and playing key roles, you would think, on paper that this is a team of the future (GA- Sounds alot like the FB Team). Still they held their own and basically the game seemed fairly even. As a result, though it would appear based on returnees that SP should be the 5th place RHL team, it is possible that they may be a darkhorse in the RHL.

bigfatfan said:

Dark Knight: SP did indeed hit their entire line-up on the Saturday scrimmage, we only have 12 kids on the roster, with one injured for that game. SF did not look impressive, no overwhelming pitching, and multiple goofs in the field. SP looked fresh througout the game as evidenced by outscoring SF 6-1 in the later innings to "win" the scrimmage 9-7.

Any TC folks prepared to comment on NOT having BOTH TOP rotation guys available this season?

Dark Knight said:

I hate to comment on a scrimmage but the score after 7 innings was 6-3 St. Francis. The umps left and then it was supposed to be a controlled situational scrimmage. SF batted 15 and SP stayed with their 10 starters. South Pas has a very well developed young team and will surprise RHL.

south pas really beat saint francis?? wow!

i know its only a scrimmage but i heard that south pasadena beat st francis

pasadena really deserves to be at least in the top ten they won their double header scrimmage by a combined 13 runs.

miguel,

baseball is a game that focuses on pitching and defense. of which, la canada doesnt have. TC, monrovia, and SM can out pitch and play better defense than la canada. Even if the LC bats are "hot" id guess that SM and monrovia can put up good offensive numbers too. IF LC wont finish in the top 3 of their league they dont deserve to be #4 in the area

La Canada softball, I wouldn't quite view scrimmage games against Golden Valley as the same competition as what you'll face this season in the Rio Hondo league. They are one of the worst teams in the greater LA area and they have been the worst team in the northern valley for years. For the past 5 seasons you can count their 5 year total of league wins on one hand. I'd win a few non-scrimmage games against reasonable competition before you start boasting.

Temple City played softball against La Salle and Sacred Heart at TCHS on Saturday.

First game was TC vs. La Salle - La Salle got up early and won 4 - 0 - I didn't see this game.

Second game was La Salle vs. Sacred Heart - very impressive pitching performance both ways. The La Salle pitcher struck out the first 6 or 7 batters she faced and many others during the game. Sacred Heart had a chance to win the game in the 7th, with a runner on 2b and 2 outs the batter hit the ball between the first baseman and the second baseman into right field. The right fielder made a heads up play to throw to first and the first baseman made the catch. No call by the umpires, and the runner from 2b when home. Eventually the umpires talked it over and called the batter out at 1b, which was the correct call, no run. The Sacred Heart pitcher (a Junior, not sure of her name - not Ferri) also pitched a great game and with some good defensive plays behind her including a great catch by the SS in the 7th to stop a hit and preserve a 0 - 0 tie.

Third game - TC vs. Sacred Heart. TC jumped out to a 2 - 0 lead, getting 2 unearned runs in the first inning. The strike zone was all over the place in this one as they were training umpires, and kept changing the umpire behind the plate. Sacred Heart couldn't get any offense going and the game ended up 2 - 0. Jessica Ferri pitched this game for SH.

Sorry I don't know most of the names of the players, perhaps someone could fill in the names.

la canada at #4 is a joke

Anaonymous said:

La Canada looked solid in its double-header. Lauren O'Leary threw a solid game in the opener and a Freshman threw a very solid second game. Offensively, La Canada dominated Golden Valley with 16 runs while giving up two. Senior Devon Zerebko and Sophmore Lauren Cox both cleared the fences while Megan Siepler, Catherine Horner, Amanda and Abby Ulf turned in a multi-hit display of power. Good mix of slapping out of Joanna Burlison and Alex Antapol. La Canada was without its starting Catcher and Shortstop. GV was without their starting SS and Outfielder.

chkyrslf,

CIF does not allow score to be kept during scrimmages, got to wait until next Friday. Besides, some coaches use those scrimmages work out some things and those scores are as meaningless as a MLB spring training game.

Its getting underway in the softball world as well. Any scores on scrimmages?

I was just wondering when the volleyball coverage would start? Arcadia has a big preseason game vs San Marcos Santa Barbara, it will be the best game in the area on Friday. It is at Arcadia High's North Gym at 6:30PM. Hope to see you there.
