Top 10's, players/games of the week, etc...

Here's your chance to have your say on where we should be this week, and by "we" I mean me. Keith Lair has been relegated to the desk helping tirelessly put together the All-Area packages to be released this week. In the meantime, nominate the best baseball/softball games this week to be covered, and while you're at it nominate your athlete of the week (male/female). The top 10's should look a little different this week, too.

Since you made the mistake of not covering the CV. PHS game, at least make sure you give Nathan Bernstein the player of the week for his game 2 RBI single with two outs, two strikes, and down by one in the bottom of the 7th. Give PHS some love.

Chk:
Dems are Dems. Should we use words such as Pink, Blossom, Shoehorn, Yellow, Horseshoe? Should we just skirt it? I know your pain, I know many youth programs that have open their arms, multi language announcements, flyers to go home, one for every child. This campaign was identified 15 years ago, was address at the highest marketing level, but to no avail. Combine that with the world of liability we live in and the results is a program with no real pulse of the community. Or perhaps a dead on arrival for youth sports in the WSGV. It’s not a problem, it’s just a fact. My biggest frustration is all the Mom and Dads that just want to help. I can’t Manage, I don’t want to deal with the parents, and my work will not allow me to be there all the time. Funny, they are actually there all the time. The volunteer coaching status in youth sports is down because the people that understand the game can bolster their pocket through individual lessons and club/travel. God forbid if you put in hundreds of hours and get lambasted for an odd F bomb. I delighted in the fact that I survived it and enjoy my time watching all the kids grow up. For those of you that really need a definition of volunteer, check out Dustin Duhamel at the TC JV level and TCNLL.
I agree with everything you said before and after the word" Dems." I replace that word with "other interests besides athletics." I have been on field allocation committees and believe me those meetings have nothing to do with the standard political stances. These meetings have everything to do with special interests that have their eyes on funding and field space and the real interests and needs of the kids are the last things addressed.(Left or Right) Get involved on a local level and that is the best that you can do.
Plus this area is so old that there is very little available land to fight for. Many of the areas I brought up earlier had a lot more room in terms of space when developing modern athletic and non-athletic field uses.
Checky,
All good points you make about infrastructure to support young student/athletes... Dems have changed the landscape in the WSGV, and that has caused top "home-grown" talent to look to greener (private/relo to OC)pasture$. Many (it just takes one) of the upper-crust talent that is left will find a way to gravitate to the best local program, rather than to play where they should (a whole other thread for debate). It all starts with the kids and developing skills before they get to HS (as I am sure you are aware). If a head coach wants to cultivate local talent, he (she!) must be very involved @ the earliest levels to ensure stability and continuity. Communities must support the programs and direct necessary resources (land/$)both scarce these days, I'm told. As advocates for these programs, we must support and direct positive energy toward supporting the overall picture...and of course hit each other over the head with blog SKUDS...this takes the pressure away from the really hard work ahead for all of us.
tcchamps,
No apologies necessary. This is fun. It would be nice if the whole area had more passion for athletics in general. Unfortunately I believe we underestimate the talent of our area because of the limitations of our youth programs and high school athletic departments. It would be nice if some programs in our area could take a look down south in OC, the South Bay, and areas in the San Fernando Valley and see how some of the youth programs down there unapologetically develop talented players in all sports, male and female, and see why those areas are sucking up all of the CIF championships and also see what opportunities that environment creates for the kids. I do think it is getting better in this area for softball. How is it going for baseball?
By the way you should pass by a high level college softball game (any where between UCLA and Mount Sac) and see how much the game has developed since the 90's. I know the hair is much better.
Chkyrslf:
I was just casting bait knowing who I’d hook. I really admire your passion and respect you for being THE ADVOCATE for the Girls. Anybody who knows me knows that I would walk up to any child/player and say work hard, practice hard, believe in yourself and have fun. Live the dream now. Society has made leaps and bounds in regards to woman’s sports. I certainly believe there are much more opportunities for softball athletes to receive support at the next level than baseball athletes. Again, my apologies for reeling you in, but I promise I will always throw you back. Returning to the theme of the thread, I have always said, RHL goes through Monrovia.
Regards
TCchump
chkyrslf,
Only the finest....Depends Deluxe XL! And yes the reference to the "wrinkled hole" was pretty good...but more of an ooooooohhhhhhhh reaction as opposed to a hahahahaha reaction. Keep up the good work! Btw, I attended a Fresno State softball game in the mid 90's when they were pretty damn good and had a GREAT time! Not a BIG fan of the game, but I respect the sport and its athletes. Hell, if Jenny Finch can strike out Paul Le "Juice"-a, she EARNS my respect.
tcchamps,
Let it be known though that I hereby nominate tcchamps as "Rookie of the Year." Bro, you are easily one of the funniest guys on this blog...bar none! Thanks for the laughter!
I noticed there were a lot of players named Kim too.
Stang Fan,
Good thing you are wearing a diaper.
you are right, that post was pretty good,
but you have to give me a little cred for "mr. eagleballs, (you are both right?)"
ALL athletes deserve respect and fair treatment....I really do believe that. But damnit, funny is funny....and this post from tcchamps almost made me piss my pants.
"Don't be knocking softball. It's kinda like watching a World Baseball Classic game. It's almost real baseball and there's a lot of singing."
LMAO!!! Too, too funny.....
BFF,
Don't you see that I only bash when you take a swing? Stop taking swings and I will stop bashing. Simple.
I am a baseball fan.
Tough Call,
Like I said, I do not disagree with Jessica being the Player of the Week. I was just calling out areafan for trying to not sound like a homer when he/she obviously is a homer. And as you can see in your own description, TC was already up by 4 when it happened and they did not win by 4. Lets call it a "Game Breaking Grand Slam!"
Great Job Jessica, way to get it done!
PS- And as far as the winning goes, I wouldn't get too big for the britches right now either. TC has a solid program, but they did lose to the one decent team that they have played this year and forfeited to the other. I should also point out that they lost quite a few key players last year. I am sure they will have victories against good teams, but it hasn't happened yet.
chkyrslf: you sound like the grumpy parent that has always been upset that softball has taken a backseat to baseball for many years. get over it, and quit bashing the rest of the folks on this blog.
Jessica Loiacano hitting two home runs was special and worthy of consideration for "Player of the Week".
Here is how I saw it:
With TC leading by 4 runs, the Rams fourth inning saw Jessica Flores and Ashley Perez get base hits and the bases were loaded for Jessica Loiacano’s third trip to the plate with nothing to really show for it so far. No pressure, its just the first league game of the season. The hit flew deep to center clearing the centerfielders glove and then the fence. GRAND SLAM!
Temple City added another five in the fifth on back to back doubles by Flores and Perez, singles by Grant and Kosharek. Leading to Loiacano's second home run, even deeper to center, this one for two rbi’s.
A-boy,
Not sure you have seen your namesake's team play but the LaS crew is in deep if they get Bryce. All he needs is a run and La is done. Step up your takes.
TCchump,
Do you not see how rude it is to be on this shared thread and make fun of and devalue the game that these kids play? Is it not devalued enough already because of the nature of society, or do you find it necessary to kick them because you think they are below you? Not even below you, below your male offspring? Would you walk up to a softball player to her face and be rude about the value of her game? I doubt it. This behavior has been an epidemic around here for a while and it is really about time it stopped. We would like a separate thread from you as well, but this is where Miguel put us.
sgv fan,
the arcadia vs san marino game was easy to forget since it is not listed on either teams schedule on maxpreps. You can't expect to get recognized if you don't update your schedule.
area fan,
I agree that Jessica Loicano is a great player and probably should deserve Player of the Week. But you sell yourself out by saying that her Grand Slam was a "game winning Grand Slam." They won the game 14-2 and the game was never close, every hit for TC in that game was game winning.
Its ok just to call yourself "TCfan" or "JLfan", for that matter, she is good enough to have a fan club.
Dont forget the Arcadia vs San Marino game on Weds
I'm a stat hound. I like stats that show production... like RBI's and OBP. Who hits a solid .400+, is among the leaders in RBI's, OBP and their team is winning?
SOFTBALL Player of the week: JESSICA LOIACANO (TC)
BA: .625
10 RBIs
OBP: .667
Team: 4-2
(including a game winning grand slam!)
HONORABLE MENTION:
ABBY OLF (LC) 11 RBI,OBP:.524
Team 4-1, 2 homers.
MARNIE HILLIER (Maranatha)
10 RBI's, OBP:.478 BA: .455
2 Triples. Team 5-2
Dont u mean maximum of a 2 hit shut-out?
Are you kidding me??? La Salle???... should not even be playing Arcadia this year. La Salle CAN NOT..... and WILL NOT hit Rutherford. I will go out on a limb and say that this will be a minimum of a 2 hit shutout for Bryce. La Salle is an average team and Arcadia is very strong this year. You can't compare last year to this year. Arcadia going without Tuck will help La Salle but not nearly enough. Miguel, don't waste your time covering this one.
high school baseball,
How about we let this game play out. Both these teams have very talented players and its really gonna come down to whether la salle can hit Rutherford because la salle has great pitching and defense. This should be a good one so dont downgrade the la salle team.
Eagleball:
Don't be knocking softball. It's kinda like watching a World Baseball Classic game. It's almost real baseball and there's a lot of singing.
chkyrslf,
Thanks - hope to see you out there. I'll be the big guy in the Red shirt keeping score. Hopefully we will have 9 girls there and we can make a game of it. I hear we might even have 10.
arcadia boy, it wont be like last year at all. although arcadia will be missing Tuck due to personal reasons, it will still be a blowout
That last one was me.
I have never claimed to have a long fuse...
La salle at Arcadia 7p.m friday nigh. Now we can finally prove how over rated the apaches are. They have no one that can hit the ball. I hope rutherford goes because the lancers are ready to show everyone that he is not that good. Just wait and see this friday. It wil be just like last year..

All in the name of fun... but you're the one with the short fuse. Never liked those skin infields... way too much dust! GNN

TC vs. Monrovia sounds like a pretty good one to me.
Arcadia vs. Maranatha would be the best one to watch but it's not on the schedule this year. Hoping for next year coaches. Make it happen!! I think both teams should still be pretty loaded. Maranatha may have the edge next year.
I vote Covey for player of the week of course.

Its just smack talk...get over it.
As a a matter of fact, you both threw it out there first.
I just hit back hard.
Eagle, I got a load of the same BS from Chky a couple of weeks ago. sounds like he has some issues with baseball vs. softball
...out
...just more noise...zzzzzz/"checky"...get my jet.
Mr. Eagleballs, (you are both of them, right?)
If you didn't notice, this a shared thread, so pull your belt up high, and bow your shoulders out, so that everyone here knows what a man you are. Now, from that manly position, you can mind your own stupid, chauvanistic, self-centered, teenage-boy wanna-be business.
If you were actually a man at all you could learn a little from the way these ladies play ball. But, since that isn't the case, shutting up would be sufficient.
PS-I find it odd that you are the eagleBALLS, because it would seem to me that you would be the little wrinkled hole right behind them.
rclancy,
You are correct sir, Mayfield's games this week against Flintridge Prep and Rio Hondo Prep are much better games . Sorry, to leave your team out. I misread the schedule, for some reason I didn't think your team wasn't playing until next week. I am looking forward to seeing your daughter pitch, I hear she is quite good.
Sorry, I didn't forget about you, LaSalle #1 in Division VI softball. Sorry Lancer fans
New CIF rankings are out. Maranatha #3 in Division V baseball and #2 in Division VI softball. Arcadia is up to #6 in Division II and Poly is #5 in Division VI. La Canada, Temple City #6 and #7 in softball Division V. Congrats to all these area teams.
Covey from Maranatha, a no-hitter and struck out 13 of 15 on Tuesday. An error away from a perfect game. Hasn't given up a hit this year and was named an Underclassman All-American last week. Go to www.sgvbaseball for more info. A lot of local kids on the All-American team. AJ from St. Francis was named 3rd team All-American. Congrats fellas!

chky ... do what you want with your time, but don't put the rest of us to sleep with all of this sb noise
chkyrslf,
Mayfield played St. Matthias with only 8 players (one girl got hurt after her first at bat and we only had 9 at the game) and beat them 6 - 3. A better game on Tuesday will be Mayfield @ Flintridge Prep.
For Baseball: the cadillac game of the week will be Wednesday, TC vs. Monrovia. We will see this week if SP is for real.
Sorry I thought you were talking baseball my bad..
chkyrslf
Just to clarify
No Sweep by TC last year Cats won the 1st game and then lost the next 2 after both #1 and #2 pitchers went out with injuries.
go right ahead, I have some time to kill.
Dont get me going on that one...
of course...is there anything else?
Chyrslf: your weekly schedule is for softball, right?
My Players of the Week are the Monrovia Wildcats pitching staff.
Cats ERA is a miniscule .88 in 48 Innings
Followed by TC at 2.0 in 42 Innings
SP 2.67 in 42 Innings, LC 3.21 in 48 Innings
SM 3.44 in 61 Innings, Blair 9.47 17 Innings
After Shutting-Out LC who supposedly had the hottest bats in the league I predict a great year for Monrovia barring injury.
The games of the week (in chronological order) are:
(I put #s next to the best games of each day)
Monday:
LaSalle vs Granite Hills in the High Desert Classic
Doesn't sound like much of a classic with GH coming in at 2-6 with alot of runs scored against them.
Tuesday:
Keppel at home vs St Matthias -SM has a terrible record so far and should be put away by Keppel
Wednesday:
1) RHL league game
LaCanada @ South Pasadena
last time played - S. Pasaden stifled the season sweep last year by La Canada by winning 6-4. This game should tell you a little about where the RHL is headed this year.
2) rematch - LaSalle @ Flintridge Sacred Heart
last time played - LaSalle won the last matchup 3-2 in the Duarte tournament this year.
3) Temple City @ Monrovia
last time played - TC completed the sweep against Monrovia last year with a close 2-1 game. One would think that TC should have this game in hand but Monrovia has shown signs of getting back to its old self.
Thursday:
Keppel @ Rosemead -
another opponent with very little quality softball being played.
Maranantha battles a struggling program at the Ontario Christian Tournament vs Montclair
Friday:
1)South Pasadena @ Temple City
South Pasadena beat TC in a 13-9 circus of a game last year to stop TC's bid at a sweep. This would be a big game if both teams win on Wednesday.
2)Monrovia @ San Marino - will show if SM can turn it around after getting drubbed by TC
3)LaCanada @ St Lucy's
Tough matchup against a legit but struggling St. Lucys
Maranantha vs struggling Woodcrest Christian at Ontario Christian tourney.
Saturday:
1)Doubleheader with LaSalle @Temple City - should be one to watch locally on the weekend.
2) Maranantha vs Riverside Christian at the Ontario Christian tourney - Minutemen need to show up big-time. This is a well coached team.
3)South Pasadena vs El Segundo at the Savannah Tournament. This team always gives SP a hard time. Lots of great teams at this tourney. They play another game that day but it is not listed.
I will stay out of the player of the week discussions. That is usually where people start to become personal.
