Football: Eagle Rock/Glendale staff heads to Temple City

There was much talk last season about the Eagle Rock coaching staff leaving for Glendale to help coach Rafik Thorossian. The tide has turned to this side of town as Temple City newbie Anthony White has hired three former Eagle Rock/Glendale coaches to join his rapidly growing coaching staff at Temple City High. Jerry Chou will be the Rams' defensive coordinator. He was previously the head coach at Eagle Rock and led the Eagles to two CIty Section championships in 2005 and 2006. Michael McKay will be the offensive coordinator, and he too served in the same capacity while at Eagle Rock. If you remember Jude Oliva was offered and accepted the offensive coordinator position at Temple City, but later had a change of heart and returned to San Gabriel. Now, here's the kicker (you ready?) ... Thorossian has joined the Temple City staff as well. He'll be coaching the running backs. That means White has three former head coaches on his staff. White's not messing around here. He means business and these additions are true evidence of that. Glendale went 1-9 two seasons ago. When Thorossian brough Chou and McKay on board the Nitros went 6-4 and missed the playoffs by a coin flip. White took some time to talk about how his staff came about and what we can expect from the Rams offense this upcoming season.
From The Sidelines: You must be some charmer because in a matter of a month you now have a high-quality staff that are not just veteran coaches but proven winners. Is that just the way you operate in general, realizing it's always best to surround yourself by smart people to become successful?
Anthony White: Well one of the things is I'm a history teacher. JFK wasn't the smartest man on earth. (Winston) Churchill and Rockefeller (either) but what they did was surround themselves by the brightest people that cared as much as them. That's what I'm trying to do; being as positive and productive as possible.
FTS: Nobody can question that you've not only been positive but also very productive. Playing at Utah must have prepared you for all this since your coach had such a superb coaching staff, too.
White: Kyle Whittingham and Urban Meyer were big influences. Whittingham (Utah), Mike Stanford (UNLV), Dan Mullen (Mississippi State), Gary Anderson (Utah State) and Meyer (Florida) were all coaches on staff my senior year at Utah, and I learned from that, too.
FTS: How did this all happen, Chou, McKay and Thorossian coming to Temple City?
White: Well, I know (offensive line coach) Tony Sumida. He was my coach at Rosemead High, and he knew them. I had not met them personally but knew what they had done at Glendale. I reached out to them and they came on board. You always hear about free agents out there who can improve your staff and that's what we wanted to do here at Temple City.
FTS: So now that you pretty much have your staff in place, what kind of offense will you be running?
White: We return a stout offensive line and we return one of the best running backs in the San Gabriel Valley (in Max Ruckle). We want to run the ball but be balanced as well. You don't have to throw 50 yards to be a passing team, just throw short passes to move the chains. We want to run the ball, eat some clock and be smart.
FTS: Is it too early to tell who will replace Morgan Hatch at quarterback?
White: Still too early. But one of the great things about McKay is that he was a quarterback at Tulane University. With McKay we'll be smart about throwing high percentage passes.
FTS: Is it safe to say the offense will be running through Ruckle?
White: It's safe to say the offense is going to run through our offensive line and Max Ruckle will be huge of what we do at Temple City. We have about 25 players that didn't play last year or the year before and they're coming back for their senior year, so that's exciting. The number that I had when we had our first meeting was 84 players. That's up to 96 now. The first offensive and defensive practice was yesterday and we finished with 57 kids not counting the kids in track, volleyball and baseball.
For the record, Temple City's schedule is the same as next year, except instead of playing San Gabriel the Rams take on Arcadia in Week 3. It's being dubbed the "Brawl for the Mall."

Both ERHS coaches and GHS coach will help TCHS, but will they stay long, dought it, who ever gets them will be a better team, in the future, Velasco has no friends after the ER sham, except for downtown-the politicians.
Jerry Chou Is a headcase. Be careful with that guy. He got kicked outta eaglerock for having a fat ego

Yeah Goldenarm I hope it's only rumors about Coach Layton leaving, especially since D-Ranch looks like they will be in our league. We don't have South Hills in our league anymore [which is totally ridiculous since we are natural rivals], and I would hate to see D-Ranch become a mediocre opponent. Its more fun at least from a fans perspective to have tougher teams to look forward to as opponents, I'm sure you feel the same way.
Dan,
Thanks for the good word. We got off to a late start but it looks like full speed ahead.
Interesting rumor on the possible departure of Layton from DR...comes at a late time for whatever HC might be replacing him...if the word hold true.
Wow, three former successful head coaches coming on board for TC. Goldenarm things must be getting exciting for you guy's over there in Ramland! Its sure caught my interest to see how this works out, Good luck Temple City, and Monrovia fans say HI to coach Maddox for me, I wish him all the luck too.
Dan from West Covina.
INFO,
That D you mention is exactly the benefit TC got last year from passing league play...it really showed at the Bonita tourney which had M-town, San Dimas and others there. GBL, Dunn, Cano and the backer crew really started working ...and it helped later in coverage situations when everybody put the shells on. If you recall the year prior, TC was killed in the secondary game after game, over the middle, deep, just about everywhere...not so last year.
I would say the Bonita tourney definitely helped Nick Bueno from Monrovia, he was holding the ball too long, throwing late, throwing to the covered man rather than the uncovered one and his drop back was short and ragged. By the time the season rolled around, Bueno looked far more poised and comfortable in the pocket. Look out for Bueno this year....The Wildcats should have a multi-threat backfield, making it very tough to defense.
I am a proponent of the passing leagues - but greatness there is definitely no guarantee to spill over into league play. It truly does help a young QB though, unless the kid is pressured too early and expected to shine lacking the mechanics and timing needed.
And lastly, I know we won't waste the speed and agility of our O-line in an endless, cupped pocket. 3000 ground yards should be a road sign - one that is dead center on CIF road.
White's got his ish down... Can't wait for the brawl for the mall HAhahahah.
You know, at passing leagues you Play DEFENSE too!
Things sound good at TC. Don’t forget about the strength and conditioning coach from UCLA. I hear he has been making up for lost time.
Your right GA about the passing leagues bringing out the next QB, but I hear the early favorite is Andrew Tinsley.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a very pass happy offense next year. White made it sound like he’s going to be dedicated to the run but I’m not so sure that’s what McKay has in mind. Why else would they schedule 10+ passing leagues for the summer?
!stang!
I think having Muir on the preleague schedule would be a benefit to both teams as they prep for league play.
GA,
How do you feel the rams will do if they played THE STANGS?
Stang Fan,
As far as QB, with the seriously heavy passing league schedule we have - SOMEBODY is going to learn to throw. There are two good candidates for sure.
What I really had hoped for is happening, and that is clear evidence of players returning to the fold, some of whom WILL earn starting jobs, despite not playing last year.
After some fairly dismal times and downright disbelief in how the season concluded last year, these changes warm the bones of a TC supporter. At the very least, a great deal of promise is there.
Yes, there will be many head chef hats on the sideline. It is up to coach White to glue it together and keep it glued. What most impresses me is the kids now have individuals on board with alot to offer as far as teaching position to position technique, and all the benefits which that can bring. White clearly has assembled a demanding bunch of coaches - and just to claw and earn a spot in CIF next season, TC is going to need all of that.
This is an all-star coaching staff!...maybe not but good coaches.
I heard the same thing King. Miguel any info on what's going on with La Salle. Although I am with The Stang Fan, all this football is awesome. Keep up the good work Miguel.
Dude is all business. The numbers are phenomonal. I don't know what the rest of the RHL is doing, but it's not too late to ruuuuuuun....
It would be interesting to see any update on the La Salle coaching staff. From what I heard, I would not say the coaching staff "has come apart" but rather there were substantial changes - I would be curious what the details are. Looks like another MM investigative report needed. Last year the staff was assembled quickly; after going 1-9, some charges are expected.
RE: TC coaching staff - looks like a lot of firepower/brain trust, and looks good on paper. However, too many chefs in the kitchen can ruin things. I hope the chemistry is there.
To say the coaching staff personnel now assembled has exceeded expectation - is a fairly massive understatement.
Having experienced people like this on board, means the spirited enthusiasm of a young head coach will be tempered by sound football logic. Combine both - and it is tough not to have a successful program.
Parents, boosters - GET ON UP AND BRING IT! We need to show equal or greater commitment!
Go Rams!!
great work on the info Miquel
That sounds like a pretty lethal staff that the Rams have in place. Hopefully, the kids will soak up all the football knowledge these guys have to offer.
Any word on the La Salle coaching staff? Rumor has it that that staff has slowly come apart.
Damn Miguel! You are busting your a$$ down there on Colorado Blvd. Keep up the good work young man!!!
Btw, that Glendale team was MUCH improved. Great hires by Coach White, especially in acquiring Jerry Chou, who really turnend Glendale's defense around.
GA, if they find ANY type of QB in the system, you better expect the rock to be flying all up and down that field. I'm sure they'll run the rock if that's the strength of the team, but that OC definitely likes to sling it. Still...good things are happening at TC, and after ALL that turmoil, you've got to be stoked about what's going on. Good luck!!!
