............All football, all the time............
Good morning, guys and gals. At the request of Mayor Goldenarm, here is your football thread. I bet teams are glad there are no mandatory workouts with another scorching day headed our way. I worked up a sweat walking from the parking structure to my seat! I plan on interviewing Tip Sanders and Dan Yoder later today. Any specific questions you guys want answered? Anyway, you guys think it's too early for a top 10 poll? .... I caught myself on that one; a newbie I am.

I really like the colors here on your blog. did you design this yourself or did you outsource it to a professional?
miguel did u c the nfl prospects for this upcoming up draft...one of our own pasadena boys top 20. draft choice...
Reyes,
Please stop worrying about "American" football and especially "Bulldog" football, because you have no clue about the game!
Coach McFarland,
Has met with a major portion of the team and the staff is in place to do major damage this year! Let's go Dogs!!!!
Miguel Melendez,
When will you sit down and talk to the new PHS BullDog coach??
Also has the new coach meet or talks to any other PHS player yet??

No knock on Bednarski at QB, last year (his first on Varsity) must have been a big jump from the Frosh team of the year before. One can only hope that Coach Smith is getting the O and D lines into the weight room this off season as a way to beef up
5 picks are also attributable to a ring the "dinner bell" pass rush due to SP's lack of run game and overmatched O-line. Even Rettig looked so-so when faced with similar circumstance at La Salle. You put any QB in "desperation" situations time after time and the pick ratio goes off the chart. Are you saying Bednarski is a poor QB?
It was not so much that So Pas did not know how to close out games - it was more that they COULD NOT STAY in the game to begin with. A year of experience for their young lineman should change that.
The SP vs. LC game last year could have been won by SP. dont laugh, the game was scoreless for much of the first half. FIVE picks by Bednarski sealed the loss for SP, and many of them were stupid picks, balls that should not have been thrown in the first place. so, I'd blame it more on SP's inexperience than the fact that LC was that much better than SP. Lack of experience shows up big time in these types of games. much like the SP/BLair game, SP did not know how to close out the game last season. Lets hope of year of experience by Bednarski under center will help right that ship in Fall 09, and perhaps he will have more than one receiver (Colliau) on the team that can actually catch the ball this upcomining season.
91030,
It is tough to argue with the excellent stats you bring forth. Also true, is LC SHOULDA been in the playoff picture last year. They nearly beat M-town and had TC beat, were it not for Loya's 2 pt conversion call and the excellent execution that followed...and finally the tackle/strip/recovery by Conora /Stewart to seal the deal.
I base my comments on two things. One is the LC seniors next year are part of the incoming freshman class I have followed for 3 years. These kids were part of a very good sophomore JV team(with Yoder on the sideline) The 20 varsity returnees you mention is not a bad figure,(TC has around 14). LC is by no means "loaded" with returning starters, but Moore's return is hugely significant for the Spartans.
The second thing is Yoder himself, and what he said on Mid-V sports talk. He may have seemed a bit doofus with the microphone, but his philosophy and approach are very sound. According to Matt, the kids like and respect Yoder and are feeling good about the coaching change. Yoder also mentioned LC has some underclass speed coming up - kids that will surprise. Is this True?..I really don't know.
My argument does little to shut yours down. Seeing it myself, I realize my prognostication may be based more on gut than stat.
Other than the LC part of my rant, what was your take on the rest?
Goldenarm,
While I generally agree with you 90% of the time, I do have some doubts about your prognostication for La Canada in the 2009 FB season.
Based on what I saw during the SP-LC game, LC's team in 2008 was absolutely dominated by Seniors with their Juniors getting significantly less playing time. While I did not see their JV team play, and it may well be an absolutely outstanding class, the MaxPreps stats are not as kind to the remaining players.
According to MaxPreps, LC lost 36 Seniors to graduation bringing back 20 Juniors in 09. On the offensive side of the ball, their stud QB Moore is back, but from there it gets a bit thin. They do not return any of their top 7 rushers with remaining 3 being 27 carries for -14 yards. They return 1 receiver who was the 7th on the team at 5/52 yds losing 93 catches for 1360 yds to graduation. On the defensive side they return 1 out of the top 11 tacklers and only 5 out of the top 20. None of the Juniors had a sack, and accounted for only 3 of the 12 interceptions. While again football has many surprises and there is no measuring heart from stats alone, my prediction is that LC has more of a rebuilding year in 2009 than a playoff one. Having had to deal with South Pas's painful efforts this year to rebuild in the face of only 2 returning starters I know how tough that can be.
La Salle is a shinking ship, get out while you can!!!!LOL
La Salle is a shinking ship, get out while you can!!!!LOL
Kids transferring all over the place seem to be the norm but it sets a bad pattern. If I'm a college coach how do I know a kid like that won't bail on me after one season just because the school isn't the flavor of the day anymore?
My question is ...
How will Rosemead do this year with the loss of ARGUABLY the BEST player EVER @ RHS . And how will they recover from the loss of coaches & all the seniors that have moved on . I am sure Matt will have them ready come September.
FIGHT ON
TM
Tip's grandson played at Blair as a freshman, and his transfer to La Salle was done before his sophomore year, so he met the CIF exception that says if you transfer before you start your sophomore year, you lose no eligibility. If he were to transfer to Duarte, he would have to get all those wonderful CIF clearances - not that it can't be done, but one more hurdle.
I understand the potential attraction of playing for his grandfather, but Kishon certainly has a good situation at La Salle. He has his teammates respect, as they were impressed with his dedication, which began when he showed up for spring football last year. Last season was cut short by injuries, but I think he has something to prove this year. He is a versatile player - may wind up being QB this year.
La Salle had enough bad news last year, so let's hope he stays at La Salle. I guess in a few weeks we will will know, depending on where he shows up when spring football starts.
BFF-
That would in fact be three schools in three years. True it might not bode well with college recruiters but the kid can put up numbers, a tremendous athlete. I doubt Tip would do that to him though. You never know though
King: would that be three high schools in three years for Tip's grandson? I dont think that would bode well for college recruiting.
Goldenarm,
You have cemented your legacy in this town. Time to put down the ham and cheese croissant and make some calls. I'm kidding about the croissant but not about making some calls.
Miquel,
My mayorship ended, forcibly removed in a violent coup led by Chky and some left wing travel ball infielders.
THANKS for listening and putting up a thread. Any news on Duarte would be great. Did Tip anticipate any of the madness and exodus(rumors, truth??) coming out of D-rock?
Yoder could have the best La Canada team in years. LC will make the playoffs guaranteed, absolutely guaranteed in 09.
Will Tip try and recruit his grandson Sanders from La Salle to come and play for him? Any word on if that kid has gotten any looks from colleges as well?
