Baseball: Maranatha takes a min-retreat to the beach

| | Comments (30) |

Oxnard isn't exactly the vacation destination on our top 10 list of places to visit, but if you have a nice beach house with a great ocean view then there's no reason to complain. I've spent a few days in Oxnard on assignment. It's not bad, but like I said, it's better when you're near the beach. The Maranatha baseball team spent three days and two nights at a beach house in Oxnard. Brian DeHaan is calling it a mini-retreat. The hope is that the Minutemen formed a tighter bond after a three-game winless streak (two losses, one tie) in the Alpha League. DeHaan said their play in that stretch was uncharacteristic. They walked a bunch of kids and made multiple errors, he said. A few days of playing ball on the beach will hopefully erase those bad memories. They play in the Chino Tournament today and after their game they'll all head over to Chavez Ravine to catch a Dodger game. Someone donated 24 tickets to the team. Must be nice. They have a big test later in the week when they take on St. Joseph's. They were ranked No. 1 in the CIF-SS Division V poll earlier this season. Maranatha dives back into league action next Wednesday when they'll try to get back on course against Brentwood at home. Still haven't had a chance to watch Dylan Covey pitch. But my buddy who used to write about sports at the L.A. Times gave me this assessment a few weeks ago: "There are two legit guys in your area that have pro-potential. One of them is (St. Francis running back/defensive back) Dietrich Riley and the other is Dylan Covey."

What a release to notice a article that might be at last in reality importance reading! I’ve been seeking all-around concerning this matter except men and women just put waste posts, or brief worthless article. I have noticed a couple vids on youtube but it’s now the equivalent as reading a good article.

Seems like Amerie is really switching up her style in her new track, Outside Your Body. She's returning to her Korean roots in her song, fusing R&B with Korean pop! This futuristic song sounds amazing on my MP3 player and I can't wait for the video to be released.

I read about this on a different website and didn't quite get it, but your post helped me understand it better. Many thanks!

thanks thats helpful

Great blog!! You should start many more. I love all the info provided. I will stay tuned :)

I shared this with my brother because he's also into reading this type of stuff.

Traffic Mayhem- I am grateful to you for this good content. You genuinely did make my day :

This is fantastic! How did you learn about this when you were first getting into it?

Can I quote you in my report for school?

Look,

According to NFHS casebook 4.3.1 (Situation A) a called game before 5 innings are completed is a 'no game" and must be replayed in its entirety or not at all if the League playoff seeding would have no effect before that second Friday in May, which ends the season.

If the game is a regualtion game, and ends in a tie, according to the CIF "Blue Book":

1521. COUNTING A TIE GAME
A regulation called game with a tie score shall be counted as ½ game won and ½ game lost for each team. This rule will apply to all contests and leagues
may not waive this rule.

Copied and pasted directly from the "Blue Book."

So it cannot be complete if it went past 5 innings and both teams had the same number of at bats or it was not a regualtion game and may be replayed from the begining according to NFHS rules. There is nothing in the CIF-SS "Blue Book" to change that.

That's my bad. I heard coach DeHaan say something about being up 4-0 and had to stop the game for whatever reason. At the time I was re-typing a previous quote and missed that part. Maranatha plays Western Christian today. Our Keith Lair will be reporting from the Chino Tournament.

I asked this question several weeks ago: is Maranatha baseball more than a one trick pony?

from today's star news:

"An eight-game winning streak came to a screeching halt, and the Maranatha baseball team then en- dured a painful three-game winless streak.

What's worse is that it came during Alpha League play, putting the Minutemen (10-3-1, 2-2-1) in third place behind Paraclete and Calvary Chapel.

Those were the teams Maranatha lost to, but they are not to blame.

The Minutemen played uncharacteristically in those games, with multiple errors and numerous walks that made it easy for Calvary Chapel to beat them 10-1. And Maranatha couldn't avoid the shutout against Paraclete, tying them 0-0 and then losing to them 10-0 two days later."

It's not a tie, Miguel is going off of Maxpreps but if you click on the score you'll see it's suspended in the bottom of 4 with Maranatha up 4-0 in the boxscore. The final score shows 0-0 because it's not done.

Tom S,

If a game does not play a complete 5 innings, it cannot be counted, even as a tie.

SGV Fan -
I'm not sure if you have any connection with Maranatha or if you saw Covey pitch those two games against Calvary Chapel and Paraclete but it really has nothing to do with tougher competition. He has faced much tougher line ups than those two. It is just a temporary confidence thing with him and partly the defense behind him. He will snap out of it and appears to already have done so. There is no question he has talent but this team is talented from top to bottom. He is just one of many and this team will get it together for the playoffs and should go far.

SGV Fan said:

You are absolutely right Miguel. My point was he was pitching against tougher opponents than in the lower division and lost two straight games. He definitely seems to have talent.

Miguel:
The tie you mention is a 4th inning rainout against Paraclete which I’ve been told will be finished later in the season.
I’m sure I’ll get slammed for this comment but Maranatha looked good last Sat in a double header against Poly. 7-1 and 8-3 wins. I was at the first game and Covey came in and pitched the final inning and fired strikeouts against the last three Poly players.
9 and 3 St Joseph’s will be a good test later this week. I’m sure the Minutemen will finish up strong in league play and will enter playoffs with a full head of steam

SGV Fan: Even C.C. Sabathia got rocked on Opening Day. We all have our bad days. It's how we bounce back that matters.

SGV Fan said:

13 walks in back to back losses would send anyone to a retreat. Is Covey as good as people say or does the fact he struggled against real competition mean anything? Here's hoping Maranatha can reach the title game again.
